First Cross Ewes In Magnificent Condition

January 12, 2017 By editor

A crowd of around 300 people attended the Forbes First Cross Ewe Sale at the Central West Livestock Exchange at Daroobalgie last Thursday where more than 11,000 ewes were sold. Troffs Pastoral Company claimed the Glamis Shield for the best-presented pen of ewes. There were two new judges this year, Jenny Bradley and Barry Harper. Geoffrey Jones and family of Trundle took the coveted shield home in its 37th year.

Adam Chudleigh of McCarron Cullinane Chudleigh said: “The yarding was in magnificent condition.” He attributed it to the specialty breeders in the Forbes region coupled with a fantastic season. Adam said a large percentage of the
yarding was sold to other areas throughout NSW, with strong interest from buyers from the Riverina, Southern and Central Tablelands. In all a total of 11,319 First Cross ewes were sold. The Quade family of Trundle had the top priced pen of ewes at $280.

Glenroy – Fantastic Fattening Country

September 6, 2018 By editor

Glenroy, in the Parkes-Forbes district, has had a long history of improved pastures utilised to finish lambs. The property is equally well suited to cropping with the vendor producing up to 26 bags of prime hard wheat per acre (5
tons/ha) in recent years.

After a long history of pastures and regular fertiliser applications this country is primed for great results. Michael and Margaret Willmott are selling to scale back their livestock enterprise that has mainly been breeding and finishing prime lambs in conjunction with some opportunistic trading of sheep. They produced a long line of large well-bred first cross ewes and second cross prime lambs that are finished on the pastures.

Earlier this year, prior to the jump in lamb prices, the vendors sold grass fed lambs for over $180/head. On today’s market these lambs could be worth as much as $280/head.

With export lambs selling for up to $344/head there has never been a better time to buy a well improved property like Glenroy. The established pastures are mainly a mix of lucerne, clovers, chicory, plantain and ryegrass. In addition, there is 40 ha of oats included in the sale, plus a paddock of clover with one paddock of long fallow.

The majority of the land is cleared and has a park like scattering of Yellowbox and Rivergums. Other assets include a neat two stand woolshed, quality sheepyards, a silo and excellent dams with good catchment. For more information contact Ainslie Toole at Landmark Harcourts o 0407 946 838.

Mayoral Notes…

January 18, 2018 By editor

Thank you, thank you very much to the Parkes Shire community for their hospitable reception of over 25,000 visitors for the 2018 Parkes Elvis Festival. The 26th festival saw record-breaking crowds from across Australia and the world enjoy the 150 individual events over five days. The Northparkes Mines Street Parade saw over 10,000 people line Clarinda Street to watch around 170 Elvis-themed floats. The crowds then gathered in Cooke Park to watch NSW Governor David Hurley officially unveil our newest tourist attraction – the life-size statue of Elvis by sculptor Terrance Plowright.

This week we marked a monumental milestone for the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail project, with the first 14,000 tonnes of steel rail delivered to Peak Hill. I joined the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, The Hon. Barnaby Joyce on Monday to park the beginning of construction on the Parkes to Narromine section.

Congratulations to Rosaline Coffee from Forbes who is the lucky winner of the Shop Parkes + Win campaign with a $5,000 travel package to a destination of her choice. Next week we welcome distinguished Australian art educator and exhibition curator, Ann Snell as the Parkes Shire Australia Day Ambassador for 2018. For information about Australia Day events visit www.visitparkes.com.au.

Yours Faithfully,

Hard And Fast Match Against Kangaroos

April 27, 2017 By editor

The Parkes Boars had to face the hard running Dubbo Kangaroos without key first grade players on Saturday, which favoured the opposition to win the match 26-22.

The Boars opened the scoring when fly half Lloyd Rogers ducked, dived and ran through the Roos defence to plant the ball under the posts. Rogers converted his own.

Kangaroos kicked to restart – the crowd appreciated Israel Symington’s AFL style jump to take the ball. The match began to settle, but an infringement by Parkes gave Dubbo a scrum feed on the 5m and enough go forward to cross the line. The conversion was successful.

Dubbo crossed twice more during the half with Parkes restricted to taking a deep penalty kick. The half time score Boars 10 Kangaroos 19.

The second half was as physical as the first with the Boars lifting their game. Lock Toby Baigent took a screamer and returned the ball 25m through the Roos defence to be brought down under four defenders. His quick pass sent the ball safely into the hands of the inside centre Ben Powlay. Powlay crossed wide.

Parkes cross the line again through the kick, run and chase of newest team member hooker Bobby Waititi. Rogers added the extras and the Boars had the lead at 22-19.

With 5 minutes to go inside centre Billy Sing of the Roos found the line and crossed next to the posts. The extras were added and the Roos took the lead 26-22.

Referee Richard Madden described the match as hard and fast for so early in the season.

Best Spring In A Decade

September 1, 2016 By editor

DSC_0206

With the best spring forecast in nearly a decade, the big question is what will happen to our markets. Whether it be cattle, lamb or rural property, they are all affected by weather and price. The lamb market has seen a correction in the last month with prices dropping below $6.00/kg/dw for the first time in many months, but are still historically good. This is due to several factors: the main one being an influx at the tail end of last season’s lambs which in many cases are lacking quality or finish. The other end of the scale is the increase in numbers of new season suckers that, after a tough start, have finished well.

The new season suckers have been affected by the rain with many having the weight, but lacking bloom due to the rain. New season lamb numbers have a tendency to fluctuate with price spikes. In many cases the weeks we see a correction is due to vendors pushing in the lighter end, which can be deceptively light to catch the high values.

This might be the year to take a punt and shear them before we see the inevitable seed problems that come with a good spring. The trade weight lambs will still be the weights to aim for. Old Sheep are still selling well on limited supply. Restockers have yet to hit the market for the best 1st cross ewes. Most of the completion remains on the light end that can been grown out on the abundant feed for either a late spring or autumn joining. Merino restocker competition also remains slow unless they are scanned in lamb, giving a quicker return.

The prime and feeder cattle markets have seen corrections of between 5 – 20cents/ kg/lw with quality falling in some cases. The best grain fed cattle, both steers and heifers, have been grossing over $2000/ hd. Vendors are still in a very strong position with numbers being historically low. The restocker market for cattle can only be described as red hot with prices well over $1000/hd for weaner steers. There are still cattle purchasing options that allow you to make money. It is a matter of not necessarily looking for the top priced pen of Angus steers. Rural Property is still a sought after commodity to purchase or lease. Even with predicted lower grain prices, the old saying of “what goes down must come up” applies as with our current livestock markets.

The long-term outlook for agriculture is bright and so are land values. For any further details, contact Langlands Hanlon or visit www.langlandshanlon.com.au

20 Years Of Service In The Central West

August 11, 2016 By editor

IMG_6512

This year Leading Edge Computers Parkes (LECP) celebrates 20 years in business, servicing the Central West and beyond. In July 1996, Greg and Marisa Liebich started Parkes Computer Scene. It was a small shop in Clarinda Street, selling computers and servicing businesses. After a year of being independent, they decided to join the Leading Edge group as one of the first members of Leading Edge Computers. Today the group has more than 130 independently owned stores nation wide.

The group provided a space where Greg and Marisa could share their ideas and pull from the wealth of support that the group offered. In May 2003, the store could no longer fit in their small shopfront, and they decided to relocate across the road into a larger premises. With a new workshop, the team grew and the business flourished.

In November 2006, Greg tragically died in a light aeroplane accident. This was a difficult chapter in the life of LECP, however the team rallied with the support of the local community. The business continued, with Marisa taking up the role of sole owner and becoming the face of LECP. Today she is supported by Luke Williams, John England and Jason Murchie.

As Greg had always been a proactive member of the Leading Edge Group, and following his loss, an award was named after him. The Local Hero Award celebrates the group member that has been voted most willing to lend a hand to the rest. The award is presented after a vote from all the stores as to who they best think fits this role, and is presented at the yearly Leading Edge Computers conference.

With the combined total of over 50 years of experience in the industry, the Parkes team is always striving to be on the Leading Edge of technology and provide the right solution for our customers.

Times have changed in the last 20 years, and technology has changed dramatically. Twenty years ago the internet was still only being introduced to the world through dialup at a speed of 56kbit/second. Since then we’ve watched it grow into ISDN, ADSL, ADSL2, 3G, 4G, and now Leading Edge Computers have partnered with a local Internet company, BitWave Networks to provide high speed fixed wireless broadband to households and businesses all around Parkes. This network has speeds up to 100Mbit/second, which is nearly 2, 000 times faster than the older dial up network.

Another development is our new managed services allowing us to remotely manage sites via the internet. From powering on a server, to installing a program, it can now all happen remotely without even leaving the shop. Twenty years ago, Intel had just released their new processor: The Intel Pentium Processor, which had a 200MHz single core. These days we have the new core processor range with the newest i7 processor featuring 10 cores and 20 threads that can all run at 3.5GHz, which is around 350 times faster.

Laptops have gone from being expensive and heavy, to sleek, lightweight and powerful. Where in 1996 laptops were few and far between, these days they rival the desktop in power and price and far out sell the bigger desktop personal computers (PCs). Times have changed, but Leading Edge Computers Parkes always strives to be the leader in new technology. We are always there to provide the latest advice on all that is new to the market, and can quote on anything that your home or business needs. The last 20 years have had many highlights for the team at Leading Edge Computers.
• In 2003, the shop was able to move out of their smaller premises, and buy the shopfront where the shop is now.
• In 2011, through meeting sales and service goals with our suppliers, the store was awarded a brand new car.
• Through our new partnership with BitWave Networks, we are now able to provide highspeed fixed wireless broadband to businesses and homes in Parkes, Forbes and surrounds.

• Always being on the cutting edge of new technology, and providing solutions to any home or business system.

Leading Edge Computers Parkes would like to thank the community for getting us to where we are today. Without the support of the Parkes, Forbes and surrounding communities, LECP would not be where we are today. And to the support team at the Leading Edge Group and all of our suppliers, who have created a community in the group that is always ready to lend a hand with information on new technology, support queries, and just about anything that you need to know to run a store.

Here’s to the last 20 years, and many more to come!
