Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils, in partnership with the SARAH (Safer Australian Roads and Highways) Group, are marking National Road Worker Day of Remembrance on 9 November, honouring those who maintain and build our roads and remembering workers who have been seriously injured or lost their lives on the job.

Road workers play a vital role in keeping our transport network safe and moving, often working alongside live traffic, speeding vehicles and distracted drivers. The Councils are committed to ensuring every roadwork site is safe and every worker returns home safely.

Forbes Shire Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Works Danial Speer is asking all drivers to slow down, stay alert and help ensure every worker gets home safely.

“Every time motorists approach a roadwork site, we ask them to slow down, pay attention and follow the directions in place.

These are real people doing essential work, often just metres from moving traffic. A moment of patience from drivers can make a real difference to keeping our staff safe,” Mr Speer said.

Parkes Shire Council’s Director of Operations Logan Hignett said staff safety remains a priority across all road maintenance and construction activities.

“Our staff work every day to maintain and improve our road network for the community. They deserve to be able to do their jobs in a safe environment and return home to their families at the end of every shift. Protecting our workers is a responsibility we take seriously,” Mr Hignett said.

Organised by the SARAH Group with industry, government and community partners, the day raises awareness of the dangers road workers face and calls for action to prevent further tragedies.
