New Lights For Three Sports Ovals

January 18, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Minister for Racing Paul Toole and Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless were in Parkes last week with good news for more than 1,000 registered sports players. They announced funding of $218,750 to upgrade lighting at Spicer and Woodward ovals in Parkes and Lindner Oval in Peak Hill providing a great boost for rugby league, rugby union, cricket, little athletics and soccer clubs. The grant is funded through a rebate on the state’s registered clubs’ gaming machines to reinvest profits back into community projects. Attending the handover were Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton and representatives and players of the different clubs.

Your Health Matters

Let’s Walk All The Way To Brisbane

Hello Phoenix Readers,
This January and February marks the start of our Year of Health. This is the time we all start making our resolutions for the year ahead and I bet most of them involve making better health choices. I know mine does! So, now is the time to kick it into gear and get your health sorted, and why not make your first stop, Parkes Pharmacy.

We have three pharmacists throughout the week ready and waiting for you to come in and get a quick and painless health check with us. It can be as simple or as extensive as you wish. We can offer blood pressure testing, blood glucose testing, a BMI check or medication review. We can also discuss weight management and quit smoking options and even sign you up to our walking challenge.

This year we hope to walk enough to make it all the way to Brisbane as a community. All you have to do is record your steps each day and hand it in each week until the end of February. Hey, that can even be something you do for your health – walk at least 10,000 steps each day (that’s about 7.5km). We certainly reach that here simply by just helping our customers around the pharmacy.

So, what are you waiting for? I know we’re waiting for you – waiting for you to start your Year of Health with us. The choice is yours, a simple blood pressure test or an extensive health check. Whatever you choose, we’re here to help.

Thanks for reading.

Inland Rail On Track With First Delivery

January 18, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The year started off on a very encouraging note for the economic outlook of the Central West of NSW with Parkes at the centre with the first delivery of steel rail for the Inland Rail project. “This is a great day for regional Australia, but more importantly, it is a tremendous day for our nation,” said Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce as the first rail of 165m and weighing 9.9 tonnes were being off loaded at Peak Hill on Monday.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the 1,700km project from Brisbane to Melbourne with a capacity to carry 1.8km long trains at speeds of up to 120km per hour, would provide people in regional areas with the capacity to be part of this corridor of commerce.

Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack said the Central West alone would see an economic benefit worth $480 million. “This ribbon of steel of 1,700km is going to transform regional Australia.”

Parkes Mayor Ken Keith added that Parkes would be a major beneficiary as a major national logistics hub. He said the construction of a $35 million facility by National Pacific including a roundabout to handle the 1.8km long trains, would connect Parkes with all the ports of Australia.

The first delivery of 14,000 tonnes of steel rail for the Parkes to Narromine section, manufactured by Liberty OnseSteel Whyalla Steelworks, is enough for 5km. Further deliveries will be made every two weeks to complete this section of 107km.

Home Building Work

The Home Building Act 1989 governs residential building work in NSW. A person doing residential building work must be licenced by the Department of Fair Trading, unless the cost of labour and materials is $5,000 or less.
• A person doing residential building work, repairs, renovations or advertising must be licenced if:
• the total cost of labour and materials are more than $5,000;
• it is electrical wiring work;
• it is plumbing, draining and gas fitting work; or
• it is air conditioning and refrigeration work (except plug-in appliances).

Licensing helps stamp out illegitimate operators and creates a level playing field for all tradespeople. Licenced tradespersons have to pay annual fees and insurance premiums. If the work is more than $20,000, the tradesperson is required to submit a written contract to the residential owner and provide for a cooling off period. In some instances for small jobs a much less onerous written contract is required for jobs over $5,000.

Owner builders require a permit from theDepartment of Fair Trading (with insurance) for residential building work with labour and material costs of more than $10,000, or you are required to get Council development consent for such work.

Large fines apply to first offenders and gaol is an option for second time offenders, who are unlicenced and/or uninsured. In addition to criminal penalties, unlicensed tradesmen might even find they don’t get paid for the job done, are sued for recovery of monies paid or might have orders made by NCAT against them.

All home owners should be aware that they can demand evidence of licence and insurance from tradespeople. If you have any more queries please feel free to contact us.

Rotary Cubby Winner: Christmas came early for three-year-old Tilly Watts when the Rotary Christmas cubby was delivered at her house. The winning ticket in the name of Jan Watts of Young was drawn at the Parkes Services Club on 22nd December. Tilly is Jan’s granddaughter. Book buyer prizes were won by Olivia Hetherington, David Marks and John Pizarro. They received vouchers from Comfort Inn Bushman’s Parkes, the Astro Dish Motor Inn and the Parkes Coffee Pot.

Over 500 Books Gifted: The Aboriginal Literacy Foundation is very grateful for the books received from the Parkes community. In December the community supported the Parke Shire Library “Gift a Book” campaign by placing 521 books under the Christmas trees in libraries. “We believe every child should have books to read,” said Parkes Branch Librarian Andrea Lovell.

Art From All Over: The second Australia Day art exhibition will be opened on 25th January by the Parkes Australia Day Ambassador Ann Snell, a noted artist herself, at 7pm at the Coventry Room at the library. Most of the 100 framed art works, from West Wyalong, Orange, Parkes, Narromine and other central west towns, will be for sale. Entrance is $15 for the opening and a gold coin donation on Australia Day and the following two days. All proceeds will go to Can Assist.

Come Fly Your Kite: What better way to start your Australia Day celebrations than by letting all your worries and stress flow up the string of your kite. It is all happening at Northparkes Oval from 8 to 11 am. Egg and bacon sandwiches and coffee will be available, and a big display of kites for sale. Don’t miss the floating whale!

Day On The Green: If you want to keep good music vibes flowing early in the year, note down Saturday, 3rd February for A Day On the Green at the Railway Bowling Club. It will showcase the best musicians in Parkes for a special fundraising day for Currajong Disability Services (CDS). Performing will be Twiggy and Jordan Dwyer, Chris Orr, Birdie and Georgie Sideris, as well as Tommy and Holly Orr. The event includes a barbeque, raffles and lucky door prizes! Children are welcome between 4-8pm. Bring a picnic blanket.

Mayoral Notes…

Thank you, thank you very much to the Parkes Shire community for their hospitable reception of over 25,000 visitors for the 2018 Parkes Elvis Festival. The 26th festival saw record-breaking crowds from across Australia and the world enjoy the 150 individual events over five days. The Northparkes Mines Street Parade saw over 10,000 people line Clarinda Street to watch around 170 Elvis-themed floats. The crowds then gathered in Cooke Park to watch NSW Governor David Hurley officially unveil our newest tourist attraction – the life-size statue of Elvis by sculptor Terrance Plowright.

This week we marked a monumental milestone for the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail project, with the first 14,000 tonnes of steel rail delivered to Peak Hill. I joined the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, The Hon. Barnaby Joyce on Monday to park the beginning of construction on the Parkes to Narromine section.

Congratulations to Rosaline Coffee from Forbes who is the lucky winner of the Shop Parkes + Win campaign with a $5,000 travel package to a destination of her choice. Next week we welcome distinguished Australian art educator and exhibition curator, Ann Snell as the Parkes Shire Australia Day Ambassador for 2018. Super Trouper New Look for Trundle ABBA Festival

January 10, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Dancing Queens from around the country will be getting their platform heels and sequins ready for the seventh Trundle ABBA Festival in May. ABBA fans will be revelling at Australia’s only and original ABBA festival in a brand
new village vibe this year.

The annual event is setting the stage for a social village atmosphere by focusing it mainly around the central location of Berryman Oval.

Held on the first Saturday in May each year, the iconic festival is gearing up for the biggest one yet following last year’s announcement that Destination NSW will fund $20,000. With just over 6,000 festival-goers at last year’s festival, the tiny Central West town of Trundle has revamped the festival structure packed with family friendly entertainment.

The 2018 festival will be held solely at Berryman Oval. “The Trundle ABBA Festival has grown significantly,” said Kelly Hendry, Destination Development Manager for the Parkes Shire Council. “The staging of the event in one location will ensure that visitors don’t miss any of the action. It will also bring improvements to event servicing, as infrastructure won’t need to be duplicated in various locations.” Trundle Hotel publican Dannielle Ward said: “The ABBA committee have always been innovative and dynamic. I think they really listened to what the people wanted and have accommodated.”

Trundle Hotel setting up a bar at Berryman Oval boasting a wine bar, and possibly a special beverage in honour of ABBA! The Trundle Hotel plays a key role in the community of Trundle. The Ward family purchased the hotel in 2009 and has since made significant improvements to the hotel.

The impressive 90-metre heritage verandah will be fully restored following a $100,000 NSW state government grant. World class act Bjorn Again will headline the festival. The rest of the f-abba-ulous line-up includes Rhonda Burchmore and Lara Mulcahy, Amitie, Kotahi Groove and dancers Alana Patience and Tristan Macmanus.

Parkes ‘All Shook Up’ For Elvis

January 10, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

It’s early January, summer has arrived in all its blazing glory and it’s time for the Parkes Elvis Festival all dressed up in black leather, white suits and lots of pomade to celebrate 50 years since the ’68 Comeback Special. With more than 20,000 people flocking to the biggest one yet, the celebration of the life and music of Elvis will be immortalised
with the unveiling of a permanent statue in Cooke Park this year to ensure his legacy will live on forever in Parkes.

In recognition of the volunteers, who have driven and managed this phenomenon for most of its 26-year history, Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith said: “The statue will be a fitting dedication to our hard-working volunteers, and serve as a lasting legacy and recognition of their work to make the Parkes Elvis Festival what it is today.”

Recognition has also come from various other quarters to confirm the Parkes Elvis Festival is one of the best event experiences in Australia. Over the past year the festival was awarded gold in the NSW Tourism Awards, gold in the Regional Tourism Awards and bronze in the Australian Tourism Awards.

As The King recaptured his kingkom with his legendary performance in 1968 in what is widely regarded as one of the great television moments in pop/rock music history, the 2018 festival promises to win over countless more fans with a jam-packed program full of surprises.

Whether you come with your black leather, white suit or flowery 60’s outfit you are guaranteed to leave here ‘all shook up’!
