Foot-and-Mouth Disease Generates Many Questions From Oxley Group Members

August 12, 2022 By Lynn Edwards

Oxley Group secretary Sue Baxter with District Veterinarian Kirsty Cordon in Condobolin last week.

The topical issue of foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease came under the spotlight at the Oxley Group CWA Council Meeting held in Condobolin last week.

Guest speaker Kirsty Cordon, District Veterinarian at Central West Local Lands Service told members of the seriousness of this highly contagious animal disease that effects all cloven-hoofed animals including cattle, sheep, goats, deer and pigs, but not horses.

Kirsty said the degree of success in dealing with an outbreak in Australia would depend on early detection and reporting. “Therefore, it is the responsibility of all Australians to keep this disease and others like lumpy skin disease out of Australia.”

Many Questions were asked concerning eradication and compensation if FMD was able to enter Australia. Members were very grateful for such an informative discussion.

Our President Robyn Miller reported on the Centenary Conference in Sydney. She said it was her first conference and she felt privileged to represent Oxley Group. The next CWA State Conference will be held in Bathurst from 8th to 11th May next year.

Oxley Group CWA Conference will be held in Parkes on 22nd October and the theme will be Challenges, Connection and Celebration. Forbes CWA Evening Branch and the Oxley Group will be holding a Centenary Fashion Parade and afternoon tea on 30thOctober at 2pm in the Forbes Town Hall as part of celebrating 100 years of CWA. Put this in your diary and come along and enjoy the afternoon.
