Help Marnie With Her Million Paws Walk

May 15, 2025 By Roxane Manley

On Sunday 25 May, Marnie Noakes and her dog Teddy are walking the Million Paws Walk to raise funds in the fight against animal cruelty.

Did you know that nearly 20,000 dogs were cared for by the RSPCA last year? That’s over 52 dogs every day! Many of these precious pups are victims of cruelty, bred to turn a profit, abused by their owners or abandoned by the humans they loved unconditionally.

That’s why Marnie and Teddy are walking for Million Paws Walk.

Will you help Marnie be a hero for dogs in need? No pressure at all to donate, but if it is achievable for you to donate please support us by making a tax-deductible donation. Every dollar donated will help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs in need. Make a donation at www.millionpawswalk.com.au/ sponsor?kw=Marnie+Noakes or if technology isn’t your thing, cash can be given to Marnie and she is happy to upload it straight onto the website via bank transfer.

Call Marnie or send a text on 0448 375 587 if you have questions or would like to donate with cash.

Have You Had Your Macula Checked?

May 15, 2025 By Roxane Manley

Have you had your macula checked? May is Macular Month, and a good reminder that if you are over 50 you should be having regular macula health checks.

The macula is the most sensitive part of the retina which deals with fine detail. A healthy macula is vital for good vision.

Macular Degeneration is a disease that causes central vision loss. This makes it very difficult to read, recognise faces, watch TV and even obtain a driver’s license.

Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in Australia. It is more common as we age, and the risk of Macular Degeneration increases if there is a family history of macula problems, cardiovascular disease or you are a smoker.

Like most diseases, early detection and treatment for Macular Degeneration is vital to maintain good vision throughout life.

Hansen Eyecare Plus has all the latest technology for a comprehensive eye exam, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). OCT is the gold standard for the early detection of Macular Degeneration.

Unlike standard retinal photography, OCT enables detailed assessment of the deeper layers of the retina.

DRY MD
Characterised by a slow, progressive loss of the RPE cells due to the build up of drusen at the macula. This makes up about 85% of moderate to advanced MD cases resulting in a gradual deterioration of the central vision. Diet and a special formulation of vitamins and high-dose antioxidants, such as MD eyes have been shown to slow down the progression of MD in those with moderate to advanced MD in at least one eye.

WET MD
This affects about two-thirds of advanced MD patients. This occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow underneath the macular and these vessels canspontaneously bleed, leading to a sudden loss of vision requiring immediate medical treatment. Treatment often requires regular injections to shrink the blood vessels.

To have your macular thoroughly checked, make an appointment today with Hansen Eyecare Plus P: 6863 5577. Book online www.opticalbookings.com.au/hansen-optometrists-parkes/store

May 15, 2025 By Roxane Manley

Parkes Jockey Club will stage a super-rich Maiden race on their Cup Day that could be worth over $116,000 to winning connections. The Country Boosted Maiden Handicap (1000m) at Parkes on Sunday 18 May is an Inglis Xtra Bonus Series race, incentivised with a $100,000 bonus to the winner.

Winning connections of designated Maidens receive the $100K bonus should the horse be an Inglis graduate from 2023 and beyond and paid up for the Inglis Race Series. Inglis Bloodstock’s CEO, Sebastian Hutch was keen to see the bonuses being won by as many sets of connections as possible.

“Through the Inglis Race Series, we wanted to create an opportunity for more people to win more prize money more often and the Xtra Bonus Series allows for exactly that,” Hutch said.

“The hardest race for a horse to win is their Maiden, so we wanted to give every buyer and owner of an Inglis graduate the opportunity to win extraordinary prize money at the entry level of racing.

“There is effectively one Maiden a week on average, at different venues – around half of which were in NSW – over different distances ranging from 900m to 2000m giving many of our clients regular chances to win significant money.”

“It’s a day filled with excitement for all ages, with activities like a jumping castle and a bucking bull. Our major sponsor is the Tomingley Gold Operations-Alkane Resources and year after year their sponsorship provides critical funding that enables the event to continue and flourish.”

Gates open at 11:30am. Entry is $10 for adults, kids allowed in free. A bar, canteen, bookmakers and a TAB will be on-site.

Radio 2pk Welcomes New Station Manager

May 8, 2025 By Roxane Manley

Greg Magnus is the new Station Manager at 2PK/ROK FM.

There has been an official appointment with a restructure for Parkes Broadcasting, 2PK/ROK FM.

Greg Magnus has taken over the Station Managers role from Paul Batchelor following his appointment to the Managers position for the networks group of QLD stations. Greg has been involved in both print and radio media since he left school in mid 1980’s and originally started his radio journey at 2PK in 1989.

Having worked at many and varied stations across NSW, QLD and WA in roles from on-air, Production Manager, Music Director, Sales, Greg has now been welcomed to the position of Station Manager at 2PK/ROK FM.

Greg’s first on-air job was on 2PK as a night/evening announcer from 6pm. Greg said “It seemed to be the timeslot where all of the newbies started.”

With such a long spanning career in the industry, Greg found it hard to pick a highlight because there were so many, but he said: “I suppose landing that first radio job was the biggest highlight, but also to be able to wake everyday to go to work in a job that is fun is a bonus. The listening audience also makes everyday a highlight.”

Greg has been lucky enough to work with some big names over the years, from comedians to politicians and musicians, but when we asked him to drop some names he said “To be honest the local people have always been the best to talk to or interview because they keep it real.”

Parkes Celebrating Mother Tongue Day For 15 Years

May 8, 2025 By Roxane Manley

Enthusiastic group celebrating Mother Tongue day at Henry Parkes Museum.

Ub Ubbo Exchange celebrated Mother Tongue recently, something it has been doing for 15 years. Director of the Australian Chapter, Sean James Cassidy marked the occasion by releasing a range of filigree designs based on Wiradjuri iconography.

These designs draw from the shapes and scrollwork of filigree; an ancient metalwork technique used in jewellery making.

The Wiradjuri filigree designs arose from workshops designed by Cassidy and co-run with Elder Robert Clegg and Irene Ridgeway through the Parkes PCYC and the Parkes Wiradjuri Language Group. It is envisaged that these designs could be used on public signage throughout the Parkes Shire. In conjunction, Cassidy facilitated the development of a Wiradjuri themed font with the Parkes Wiradjuri Language Group to be possibly used for future projects.

Also released was a QR code that directs the viewer of the mural at the PCYC to an animation of the mural designed by Robert Clegg. The third component was an originalmusic release “A Song for Lope” was composed by former Parkes man Jason Nacho Murchie, in honour of Lope Bosaing, the cofounder, along with Sean James Cassidy, of Ub Ubbo Exchange, an art collective created between Australia and The Philippines.

On the following day, Ub Ubbo Exchange, in collaboration with Sidney Allo, made a presentation at the Henry Parkes Museum. Titled Excavating Bridges for Future Streams Bula (Bula is 2 in Wiradjuri), the group showcased different ways to present information using technology which included hologram fans, interactive pdf’s with Gifs, and projection mapping. Sidney’s skills in projection mapping allowed him to manipulate a projection onto a curved surface to produce a flat image. Mini silos were made by Allo and Cassidy to provide an example of what could be achieved.

“It was a privilege to work with someone as talented as Sidney,” said Cassidy.

Slope Assessments Taking Place Across The Central West

May 8, 2025 By Roxane Manley

Transport for NSW will carry out geotechnical slope assessments at multiple locations across the Central West as part of ongoing efforts to maintain a safe road environment.

From Monday 12 May, crews will assess slopes on the Great Western, Castlereagh and Mitchell highways as well as on Sofala Road, The Escort Way, Chifley Road, Trunkey Road, Jenolan Caves Road and Duckmaloi Road.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the work is crucial for identifying potential issues and informing decisions about risk management and mitigation.

“Assessors will be looking for slope instability and the potential for landslides. This routine work helps provide a safe road environment now and into the future,” the spokesperson said.

“Slope management is vital for the upkeep of our road network and to maximise safety for all road users.

“Motorists may notice our assessment teams working on foot in these areas and we ask that they drive with added awareness and caution.”

Work will take place between 7am and 5pm on weekdays and is expected to take five days to complete, weather permitting. For the safety of workers and motorists, single lane closures, intermittent stopping and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h may be in place during work hours. Access for residents and emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control. Transport for NSW thanks road users for their patience. For the latest traffic updates download the Live Traffic NSW app, visit livetraffic.com or call 132 701.
