Flemings Expands Its Presence In The Central West

March 19, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Pictured from left to right is Justin Fleming, Tara Kelly, Chris Ryan, and Richard Fleming.

Flemings Property Services has expanded its footprint across regional New South Wales, entering the Central West through a new alignment with respected real estate leader Tara Kelly. Her established Forbes and Parkes offices are transitioning from the Century 21 franchise and will now operate under the Flemings brand.

The move reflects Flemings’ continued confidence in the strength of regional property markets and its commitment to providing greater opportunities for clients through stronger brand recognition, expanded resources and enhanced support for its country-based teams.

Founded in Boorowa in 2000, Flemings has steadily grown its presence and now operates across Harden, Cootamundra, Young and Cowra. With the addition of Parkes and Forbes, the company now spans seven thriving regional communities and employs a team of more than 40 people.

Managing Director Justin Fleming said the expansion represents a natural next step for the business, which has always been built around the communities it serves.

“Our business has grown out of the places where we live and work and communities we care deeply about,” Mr Fleming said. “We’re proud of the business we’ve built, the service we provide and the way we contribute locally. The Forbes and Parkes offices are a perfect fit for our network and we’re proud to welcome Tara and her team to the Flemings family.”

Principal Tara Kelly said joining Flemings felt like a natural progression, with the company’s values closely aligned with the way her team operates.

“This move allows our clients to continue working with the same local team they know and trust, now backed by a strong, country focused leadership and support network,” Ms Kelly said.

Over the coming weeks, locals will see new navy-and-white Flemings branding appear across the Central West, representing trust, reliability and strong country values.

Minister For Education Launches Harold’s Safe Screen Time To Keep Kids Safe In The Early Years

March 12, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Tuesday 10 March was Safer Internet Day – a reminder that it’s never too early to help children start developing digital literacy and safe online habits. In regonition of this, the Federal Minister for Education, the Hon. Jason Clare MP joined Healthy Harold to launch a new module for the early years, Harold’s Safe Screen Time.

“According to the eSafety Commission, many toddlers can swipe on devices before they can even speak, and 81 per cent of Australian parents report that their 2 to 5-year-old uses the internet,” said Karen Robertson, CEO at Life Ed Australia.

“This is confronting, but not a surprise when we look at the world that our children are growing up in. It’s more complex, more connected. We need to meet them where they are and support them with our most powerful tool; education.”

This is the purpose of Harold’s Safe Screen Time. It aims to initiate important conversations about online safety with our littlest learners.

It addresses critical topics with children aged three to five, such as:

early warning signs when something feels unsafe, help-seeking behaviours, screen time management, autonomy and consent.

Like all of Life Ed’s early years modules, Harold’s Safe Screen Time is presented in an age-appropriate way. It uses the power of storytelling, through a specially crafted Healthy Harold Big Book, to explore basic concepts and encourage discussions that spark curiosity, joy and a love for learning.

“We all have a responsibility to work together to keep children safe and to prepare them for the world – online and in real-time,” continued Ms Robertson.

Available nationally, bookings are open now at lifeed.org.au/haroldssafescreentime

Forbes’ Maree Yapp Named 2026 Orange Electorate Local Woman Of The Year

March 12, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Maree Yapp pictured in the centre and surrounded by her entourage of supporters. Local Member Phil Donato pictured on the left.

On Thursday, 5 March Member for Orange Philip Donato MP announced the recipient of the 2026 Local Woman of the Year Award – Maree Yapp of Forbes.

“With so many women doing so many amazing things for their local communities across the electorate, it’s always a challenge to single someone out,” Mr Donato said.

“It’s my absolute honour to officially name Maree Yapp as this year’s Local Woman of the Year for the Orange Electorate,” said Mr Donato.”

Maree received a call from Phil Donato MP the week before the announcement and could not believe what he was telling her. “I was “multitasking” when I answered the phone, juggling keys, unlocking gates and the excited chatter from students arriving for the school day surrounded me, making it harder to believe.” she said.

On the day of the announcement Maree still could not believe she was receiving this honor. “I read the certificate Mr Donato handed me just to make sure he had the right person and I glanced sideways at Mr Donato’s speech as he spoke in case it wasn’t written about me.”

“I am honoured. It was such a joy and a privilege to share the moment with my family and friends at a gathering of some amazing people who have guided me to become the person I have become. I have learned something from everyone present on the day and will continue to learn from going forward.” Maree said.

Indefinite Closure Of Great Western Highway – Unacceptable Says Donato

March 12, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Member for Orange Phil Donato MP has responded with strong criticism of Transport for NSW following the agency’s announced indefinite closure of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass. The independent MP has called on the NSW Government for urgent action to address the fragility of the transport corridor linking Sydney to Western NSW.

The closure is already disrupting freight movements, businesses and regional communities that rely on the highway as the primary east–west connection to the state’s capital.

The MP has warned that the problem will only worsen as freight volumes grow with projects such as the Inland Rail and the expansion of the Parkes freight hub.

“If we don’t start planning long-term solutions now, this corridor will become one of the biggest freight bottlenecks in Australia,” Mr Donato said.

“For decades we’ve seen massive infrastructure investment in Sydney — projects like WestConnex and NorthConnex — while regional transport corridors are left struggling with ageing infrastructure.”

“Regional communities contribute enormously to the state’s economy, particularly through agriculture and mining, yet we are still relying on a single vulnerable corridor to move goods and people between Western NSW and Sydney,” said Mr Donato.

Henry’s Pantry Is Open To Everyone In The Community

March 12, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Henry’s Pantry is a food relief and food rescue social enterprise based in Parkes, established to support individuals and families from the central west experiencing financial hardship.

Founded on 9 May 2013, Henry’s Pantry (originally named Georgie’s Pantry) has been the only organisation in the district to deliver a consistent and sustainable charitable food service. Between 2018 and 2022, its services were expanded to include drought relief supporting local farmers.

Pantry volunteers haven’t missed a service since, supporting an average of around 50 families, or around 150 and 200 people each week.

The Pantry operates with ten dedicated volunteers who contribute their time across three days each week. Volunteers undertake a range of roles, including collecting donated food from local supermarkets, stocking shelves, preparing grocery hampers, and welcoming customers.

Food donations are collected from Woolworths six days a week and Aldi three days a week. They also purchase food from Foodbank, local supermarkets and Central West Food Rescue. Many local families supply dozens of eggs, offer oranges, spinach, honey and other fresh produce ensuring a reliable supply of food for the service.

Volunteer since day one, Shirley Westgarth, who is a retired nurse in her 90’s said she volunteers because she loves it, “I love helping people.”

Shirley can only volunteer in the warmer months, but says she comes every day, “I am coming Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.”

Some patrons access the service regularly throughout the year, while others use it temporarily. Community support is vital to the ongoing operation of Henry’s Pantry, and both individuals and businesses are encouraged to contribute through donations of food, partnerships, or volunteering.

Open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9am to 1pm, Henry’s Pantry is located in Jansen Lane (at the rear of the Lutheran Church, 96 Currajong Street). A parking area and ramp access is available.

Local Farmer Returns To The Central West To Establish His New Ministry Headquarters

March 12, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Pictured is Bishop Barry Cunningham at the new Promise Faith Centre headquarters at Alectown.

Forty-eight years ago, Barry Cunnington, left his family farm near West Wyalong and ended up in ministry in Qld which established the Promise Faith Centre Churches International.

This month he returns to the Central West to establish the headquarters of this ministry at the former Vision Ministries, Mamre Farm, Alectown, now owned by Engedi Ministries Inc.

“I was born and raised in the Central West, between West Wyalong and Condobolin, and was the only son of a Methodist farming family,” Barry said.

“My peers and my parents recognised early that I had a call of God on my life to be a missionary, planting churches and having orphanages and widows’ homes.”

Barry said, “In 2025, I began to explore the relocating of the ministry headquarters to the former location of Vision Ministries at Mamre Farm in Alectown, now owned by Engedi Ministries Inc. The result? As of February 2026, Engedi has leased their property and facilities to us, the Promise Faith Centre Churches International.”

Thus begins Bishop Barry’s new chapter of ministry outworking in various activities, including regional and international Gospel crusades, Daisy a Day ministry (restoring the lives of wandering believers, both men and women, husbands and wives), revival, healing and prayer meetings, ministry training and beginning this October Long Weekend, an annual camp meeting mobilising Aussies for Christ.

Promise Faith Centre Churches International will have their official launch this Saturday, 14 March, starting at 12pm. All are welcome to attend this free event and lunch will be provided. For information or to RSVP, please contact Bishop Barry Cunnington on 0412 511 115 or Leah Knowling on 0407 025 910.

Young Boxer Olivia Hetherington Finds Confidence In The Ring

March 12, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Olivia Hetherington pictured in the centre with Luke Hughes on left and Beejay Ward on the right.

Sixteen-year-old Parkes girl, Olivia “Liv” Hetherington has shown incredible growth since joining Hillbilly Boxing just six months ago. Originally taking-up boxing simply for fitness, Liv had no plans of stepping into the ring. At the time she was extremely shy, and lacking in confidence, but with encouragement from her coaches and teammates she began to grow more comfortable in the gym.

After gaining confidence through training and sparring, Liv took a big step on Saturday, 8 March, competing in her very first bout at EXO Fight Night in Dubbo. Facing Tracey Swoden, a heavier and more experienced opponent, Liv showed courage and determination throughout the fight.

Her efforts did not go unnoticed, with Liv receiving an Encouragement Award on the night for her determination and effort. The once-shy teenager left the ring stronger, more determined, and already looking forward to her next fight.

Olivia had a huge cheer squad in the crowd on the night and she said, “I’m not sure when it will be but I will keep training and I can’t wait for my next fight.”

She spoke of working on her defence and head movement and said, “Thank you to my coaches who believed in me and supported me.”

Coaches at Hillbilly Boxing say they are extremely proud of how far Liv has come, from a shy beginner to a confident young boxer saying, “She’s come a long way from the shy girl who first walked through the doors.”

Outside of her own training, Liv is also known around the gym for helping younger members with their sessions, always willing to lend a hand and listen to her coaches.

Hillbilly Boxing says Liv has become a valued part of the gym community and a great example of what dedication and stepping outside your comfort zone can achieve.”

Pharmacy Interns Return To Central West

March 5, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Pharmacy graduates (L-R) Zandra Hinton (Parkes Pharmacy), Aisling Casey (Life Pharmacy Forbes) and Sami Duggan (Flannery’s Pharmacy) have joined LPG for their intern year.

Passion for community pharmacy, and a desire to learn, has enticed a group of pharmacy interns to the New South Wales Central West for the next chapter of their professional development.

New Zealand university graduates Aisling Casey (Life Pharmacy Forbes) and Zandra Hinton (Parkes Pharmacy) have joined Forbes local Sami Duggan (Flannery’s Pharmacy) in living and working in Parkes and Forbes for their intern year.

“I came back to Forbes because pharmacists play such an important role in small rural communities. People rely on their local pharmacist not just for medicines, but for advice, support, and sometimes even just a friendly chat.

“Having grown up here, it means a lot to be able to give back to the community,” former Red Bend Catholic College student, turned Pharmacy intern, Sami Duggan said.

“Working in rural communities allows you to build strong relationships with patients and be part of their healthcare journey in a really meaningful way.

“You don’t fully realise the value of working in a rural community until you spend time there yourself – the trust people place in you, the sense of connection, and the opportunity to make a genuine difference is incredibly rewarding, both professionally and personally.”

Partner at Flannery’s and Life Pharmacies, Sarah Hazell, says “Aisling, Zandra and Sami are already making their mark in our stores. They are a wonderful example of the talent coming through our industry, and we are delighted to welcome them to LPG.”

Parkes Shows Up In Support Of Adelaide Blunden

March 5, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Pictured handing over the funds raised for Adelaine Blunden (L-R) is Zach Byrnes, Fiona Durkin, Moihi Parker, Joel McNamara and Elisha Nqua.

Three year old Parkes girl Adelaide (Addy) Blunden, has recently been diagnosed with Metastic MYC-amplified Medulloblastoma.

The condition is associated with poor prognosis and is often resistant to standard treatments.

The disease is primarily found in children and accounts for a significant percentage of all childhood brain tumors. The MYCamplified subgroup is particularly aggressive, with a low overall survival rate and a high likelihood of metastasis.

Due to Adelaide’s heartbreaking diagnosis, her father Alex has made the decision to stop working so he is able to be with his little girl for an undetermined amount of time. Addy remains the same smiley happy girl despite having to undergo many surgical procedures and spend time away from friends and family.

Wanting to help with fundraising efforts for Addy, on Saturday 28 February, the Parkes Aquatic Centre held a fundraising movie night and raffle with loads of prizes donated by local businesses. With over 100 people in attendance and an amazing show of community support, the incredible team at the Parkes Aquatic Centre are proud to share that together with the Parkes community they were able to raise $1,300 for Adelaide and her family.

Zach Byrnes, Regional Aquatics Manager said, “Thank you to all the local businesses who generously donated prizes, and to every single person who bought a ticket or came along on the night. The Parkes community continues to show just how strong and supportive it is.”

There has also been a Go Fund Me set up and all of the funds raised will be used for ongoing expenses and treatment. If you are in the position to help Addy then please do so, all donations will be much appreciated by the family. Donations can me made at www.gofundme.com/f/adelaide-blunden
