Farmers, contract harvesters, truck drivers, transport companies, pilots and agricultural machinery retailers are invited to attend this year’s Be Road Ready for Harvest Field Days in Forbes, Condobolin and Parkes.

The Forbes Field Day will be held on Thursday 23 July at the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange with breakfast provided from 7.30am. The official program will run from 8am – 11.30am.

The Parkes Field Day will be held on Thursday 3 September at the Parkes Racecourse with breakfast provided from 7.30am. The official program will run from 8am – 11.30am.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said that this year’s events will deliver new content and focus on the rules and regulations for safely and legally moving agricultural vehicles, combinations and trucks on the road.

“Attendees will hear from experts from NHVR, Transport for NSW and Service NSW about a range of topics.

“There will be a deep dive into dimensions, signage and other travel conditions.

Plus a hands-on machinery display and other interactive activities.

“Safety and compliance during harvest is very important. Operators need to be aware of their responsibilities and ensure that all warning devices and travel requirements are adhered to.

“Regulations are constantly changing and events like this are important to ensure people are up-to-date on what’s required before the upcoming harvest period,” Ms Suitor said.

Celebrating 100 Years Of Marist Education In Forbes

July 9, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Pictured at RBCC to kick off the 100 Year Celebrations is current Principal Stephen Dwyer and past Marist Brothers and Sister of Mercy of RBCC.

Around 130 Marist dignitaries, ex-teachers, ex-students and current families attended a special mass and luncheon at Red Bend Catholic College on Sunday 5 July to help celebrate 100 years of Marist Education in Forbes. The date, 5 July being significant as that was the date the school originally opened in Johnson Street in 1926.

Stephen Dwyer has been Principal at the College since 2019 and is the first Principal to not be a Marist Brother. Referred to as a lay Principal, Stephen has worked at the College from 1992 in various roles with the exception of one year where he worked at a school in Alice Springs as Assistant Principal.

Red Bend Catholic College Principle Stephen Dwyer said, “Sunday’s celebration was a deeply moving and joyful occasion for the Red Bend Catholic College community.

“As we gathered to mark 100 years of Marist education in Forbes, we honoured the vision, faith and sacrifice of those who came before us, celebrated the strength and spirit of our College today, and looked to the future with great hope.

“It was a wonderful reminder that Red Bend is more than a school; more than excellence in education; it is a community of faith, family spirit and belonging that has shaped generations of young people across central and western NSW.” A Gala Dinner will be held at Forbes Town Hall on 15 August to further celebrate the 100 Year milestone. Students Get Hands On With Healthcare Careers

July 2, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Students pictured learning the role and pathways to paramedicine.

Approximately 20 students from Parkes and surrounds immersed themselves in healthcare careers through the Scrub In Work Experience Program.

Rather than shadowing just one clinician and field all week, students received a broad careers taste tester and rotated through 45-minute workshops, facility tours, speed networking and a career pathways panel.

The teenagers tried out allied health, physiotherapy, social work, nursing, medicine, paramedicine and Aboriginal health and education. They learned how to: study realistic 3D printed bullet wounds, take mobility measurements, apply plaster casts, engage with stroke simulations and engage in a VR assessment of escalating patients in a 6-bed ward.

Participating schools included Parkes High School, Tottenham Central, Peak Hill Central and Parkes Christian School.

Declan, from Parkes High School, Year 10 said, “When they offered this program I decided it might help me with future choices and I wanted to try different industries.

The activities we got up to today included nursing, social work, speech pathology and medicine. I originally wanted to do nursing, but after doing things like radiography that really caught my eye and I found an interest in that.”

Mia, also from Parkes High School, Year 10 said, “When I graduate I would like to do nursing in the hospital. I would like to help a lot of sick people because I’ve had sick people in my family and have seen how I can help them. We were drilling into a chicken bone and putting a syringe in to inject into the bone. Then we put an IV in and learned about what some kids have to deal with when they have speech impediments.”

Scrub In is designed to maximise hands on learning, broaden career awareness, clarify pathways into health, and reduce pressure on staff.

Troy Kelly, Senior Project Officer, Regional Industry Education Partnerships said “I think it’s given the students a much broader perspective than if they had gone through a conventional work experience program.”

Learning to cannulate a patient and flush veins.

Learning to intubate and ventilate a patient.

Simulating drilling through tissue and bone to enable medication to be injected

Forum Looks At Men’s, Boys’ And Dads’ Issues

July 2, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Federal Member for Parkes Jamie Chaffey MP and Shadow Envoy for Men and Boys and Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien MP held a Men’s, Boys’ and Dads’ Forum in Dubbo on the weekend to allow a safe space for people to talk about their concerns.

Mr Chaffey said in a speech to Parliament that “It was a real pleasure to have Shadow Envoy for Men and Boys Llew O’Brien in Dubbo for this special event,” he said.

“It is critical to have these conversations.

Men die younger from preventable diseases and have much higher rates of suicide.

They have lower life expectancy, higher rates of chronic disease and lower rates of education.

“I particularly thank Warwick and Kylie Mitchell of Peak Hill in my electorate of Parkes, who lost their 17-year-old son Mack to suicide in 2024. They have found a way to celebrate their son and to raise awareness of mental health through their MACK Label and a ball planned for Parkes in October. You can find out more on their website themacklabel.rocks. “We can only make a positive difference by sharing the concerns and sharing the resources.”

Recognise Local People In Your Community Quietly Caring For Australia

July 2, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Thousands of landcarers are out in paddocks, parks, coastlines, classrooms, creeks and community spaces doing the work that protects the places and productive landscapes we all rely on.

With just one month remaining until nominations close for the 2026 State and Territory Landcare Awards, Landcare Australia is calling on communities to shine a light on the local people and groups making a real difference to the health of our land, water and environment.

Who in your community deserves recognition? It could be: A farmer improving soil health and biodiversity on their property, A volunteer who’s spent years restoring a local reserve, A landcare, Coastcare, bushcare or rivercare group making a difference, A Traditional Owner or First Nations organisation caring for Country, A teacher inspiring students through environment projects or A young person leading positive change in their community.

From farmers improving soil health and productivity, to volunteers restoring native vegetation, Traditional Owners caring for Country and young people leading envi

gronmental projects, these are the kinds of everyday efforts that often happen quietly but make a lasting difference to communities and the environment.

It might also be the neighbour who

spends weekends replanting a creek line, the farmer trialling new ways to keep soil healthy, the teacher helping students grow a habitat garden, or the volunteer group that turns up month after month to restore a local reserve.

Many landcarers do this work quietly and consistently, often over many years, so a nomination is a simple but powerful way to say their work matters. The awards celebrate the people helping create a more resilient future for Australia.

Anyone can put forward a nomination.

Nominations close Friday, 31 July 2026.

If there’s someone in your community who is helping protect landscapes, strengthen local connections and leave the environment in better shape for future generations, now is the time to tell their story.

For more information or to nominate please go to www.landcareaustralia.org.au/awards
