A Regional Challenge – Labor Shortage Impacts Small Businesses In Parkes

July 13, 2023 By Peter Giles

Peter Giles, owner of Giles Group Australia. Giles Group Australia specialise in fixed plant engineering, construction and maintenance for Australian industry. They support Australian industry from their head office in Parkes, Central West NSW

The labour shortage gripping Australia has reached the regional town of Parkes, NSW, causing significant implications for small businesses. As demographic shifts and a skills mismatch persist, Parkes entrepreneurs struggle to attract and retain skilled workers, hindering growth prospects and impacting the local community.

An ageing population and urbanisation coupled with a national unemployment rate of 3.6%, have resulted in a dramatically declining labour force. This, associated with a skills mismatch between available workers and the specific needs of businesses, has created a dire situation for small companies in Parkes. Local talent pools are limited, forcing businesses to seek workers from outside the town, leading to difficulties in remote working life, lack of affordable housing, and limited rental availability.

Expansion plans halt as companies battle to recruit and retain skilled employees, Reducing production capacity and hindering the pursuit of new business opportunities. This not only limits individual businesses but also impacts the overall economic vitality of the town.

To combat the labour shortage, small businesses in Parkes are forging partnerships with local educational institutions, government agencies, and industry associations. These collaborations aim to develop training programs, apprenticeships, and internships, bridging the skills gap and providing opportunities for locals to gain valuable experience.Targeted incentives and assistance could be provided to small businesses in regional areas, including financial aid, tax incentives, grants for workforce development, and improved infrastructure.

Small businesses are leveraging technology and automation to optimise operations and mitigate the impact of labour shortages. Digital tools, process automation, and innovative solutions can enhance productivity, reducing the reliance on a large workforce.

The labour shortage poses a challenge for small businesses in Parkes, collaborative efforts are needed between companies, government, educational institutions, and the community to address the issue by fostering partnerships, providing incentives, and embracing technology.

This Is One Production Not To Be Missed

July 13, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Cast and crew are excited for the opening night, Saturday the 15th. Get your tickets and come along and support local theatre.

Not Now Darling is a British farcical comedy featuring minks, mistresses, mobsters and mistaken identities, including scantily clad women hiding in cupboards! This production is the directorial debut for Parkes M&D member Hannah Symonds, who has over 20 years of theatrical experience and graced the Parkes M&D stage as Elphaba in the 2021 production of Wicked.

Not Now Darling follows the flamboyant Gilbert Bodley (Aaron Kingham) as he schemes to seduce the beautiful stripper Janie McMichael (Lisa Ramsay) by offering her an exquisite £5,000 mink coat.

Unfortunately, Janie’s husband, Harry McMichael (Benson O’Donnell), mustn’t know about the affair so the coat is offered to Harry at an excellent price of £500, with Gilbert paying the remainder.

Harry realises the bargain and instead buys the coat for his curvaceous secretary Sue Lawson (Hannah Symonds). Gilbert is shocked by this turn in events and both he and his nervous assistant Arnold Crouch (Russell Tanswell) are further embarrassed when Janie refuses to leave the salon by stripping down. Their frenzied attempts to retrieve the coat from Sue and hide the naked Janie are further complicated by the unexpected arrival of Gilbert’s wife Maude Bodley (Lyn Townsend).

Meanwhile, Arnold’s method of hiding any discarded ladies underwear is to throw them out the window, leaving the salon’s spinster secretary Miss Tipdale (Jessica Morgan) to retrieve the garments and any other items tossed from the window. The hilarious events at the salon are interrupted by the elderly couple Mr. and Mrs. Frencham (Steve McGrath and Ruth Barnes) as they navigate the law, as well as the beautiful fur model Miss Whittington (Gyhaan Edwards).

Opening 15th July to the 30 th July 2023. A group ticket discount of buy five get one free will apply. Head to the website for more details. www.parkesmandd.com.au

Star Of Parkes Shire Announced

July 6, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Councillor Marg Applebee, Philip Donato MP, Kristine Pizarro, John Pizarro, Marilyn Pizarro, Narelle Pizarro and Deputy Mayor Cr Neil Westcott.

Fifteen times Australian Go-Karting Champion, John Pizarro has been presented with the Star of Parkes, Parkes Shire Council’s highest symbolic honour, inspired by the tradition of presenting ‘Keys to the City’.

Parkes Deputy Mayor, Cr Neil Westcott, presented Mr Pizarro with the Star of Parkes at a ceremony held at the Parkes Motor Museum on Wednesday, 14th June.

“John Pizarro has led an exciting career as an outstanding kart racer, with over 15 Australian Championship titles across several classes, competing in five World Championships, an international team win in the Japan Kart Grand Prix, a Dubbo track record and participation in international races including Hong Kong, New Zealand, Japan, France, America, Philippines, Italy, Germany, Portugal and Belgium,” Cr Westcott said.

Parkes local, John started racing in 1964 at the age of 19 years old, with a career that went on to span more than 30 years. He started in a homemade go-kart fitted with a small motorcycle engine, four years later winning his first National Championship at Sunnybank QLD in 1968.

In the years following he received a number of awards and achievements including:

• Parkes Sportsman of the Year 1973 and 1978

• Central West Sportsman of the Year 1979

• The Australian Sports Medal 2000

• Life Member of Karting NSW 2011

• Inducted into the Karting Hall of Fame 2011

• Inducted into the Australian Motor Sports Hall of Fame 2017

• Awarded an OAM 2019.

John’s contributions to motor sports continued off the racetrack. He was involved in the design and/or accreditation of many kart tracks across NSW, trained young drivers on tracks around the Central West and designed, manufactured and sold Go-Karts from his home in Parkes.

John has been a Parkes Rotarian since 1971, having served as President twice during that time. In 2005 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow, which is both an award for exemplary work in community service or helping those in need, or a method of recognising a substantial donation to The Rotary Foundation. He was also awarded an Outstanding Service to Rotary in 2008 and 2009.

Cr Westcott said Mr Pizarro has been a wonderful ambassador for Parkes Shire and hoped that his considerable achievements would inspire future generations to achieve their best in their chosen fields.

“We are extremely proud of John and the wonderful role model that he has been for Parkes Shire and for the sporting community. It was only fitting to award this honour at the Parkes Motor Club, where his prized 1955 Morris Minor utility is featured on display,” he said.

“The Star of Parkes recognises his dedication, ability, and desire to succeed and the sacrifices that he has made to the pinnacle of his career,” concluded Cr Westcott.

The Star of Parkes has previously been awarded to five outstanding citizens, most recently to renowned music educator, academic and musician Professor Gary E. McPherson for his significant contributions to the music industry.

Inland Rail: Major Enhancesment Contract Awarded

July 6, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Martinus Rail has been awarded a $403.5 million contract to design and construct enhancement works on the Stockinbingal to Parkes (S2P) and Albury to Illabo (A2I) sections of Inland Rail.

This is a key milestone towards Inland Rail being completed between Beveridge in Victoria and Parkes in New South Wales by 2027, as per the recommendations of the independent review of Inland Rail published in April.

The enhancement works to be conducted by Martinus Rail will ultimately enable double-stacked freight trains to run between Albury and Parkes and will include bridge upgrades and track lowering works to create the required height and width clearances.

Forbes will be enhanced and an additional crossing loop will be constructed at Daroobalgie.

Enhancement works on the S2P and A2I sections follow on from the successful completion of the Parkes to Narromine section of Inland Rail, which was completed in 2020. The new enhancements will enable double stacked trains to travel from Beveridge to Narromine by 2027.

Inland Rail is continuing to engage strongly with local suppliers and businesses across regional New South Wales, helping them to benefit from the Australian Government’s investment in Inland Rail.

Melvyn Maylin, Inland Rail Director of Program Delivery for Albury to Parkes, said

“$2.7 billion in contracts has already been awarded to over 400 suppliers and businesses across the country, with more local businesses between Albury and Parkes to benefit from the new opportunities and supporting jobs.”

500 Completed Surveys: The Goal For The Parkes Liveability Strategy

July 6, 2023 By Roxane Manley

There’s just two days left for residents and those working in the area to participate in the Parkes Liveability Strategy Survey. Currajong Senior Planner Brent Tucker is assisting Council with the project and is encouraging everyone to complete the survey.

“So far, we’ve had a great response with close to 400 surveys completed, but there are a large number of surveys that have been started but are showing to be uncompleted, the survey takes less than 15 minutes to complete and will influence hundreds of decisions moving forward over the coming years. If you only participate in one community engagement activity this year, make it this one,” said Brent.

The Parkes Liveability Strategy will identify key projects, ‘missing’ infrastructure and services that people living and working in the area need for a healthy, happy and connected community.

For more information and to access the Liveable Neighbourhoods Survey, visit www.yoursay.parkes.nsw.gov.au. Submissions close 9th July 2023.

The Unsung Heroes In Our Community

July 6, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Jennelle Tomlinson pictured with her husband David and mother Pam.

Australia has 2.65 million unpaid carers – people who provide care and support to a family member or friend with disability, a medical condition, mental illness, or someone who is frail due to age. These unsung heroes can be found in communities including Parkes, NSW.

Every day across our community a vast number of people are quietly going above and beyond for their loved ones. One of these people is 69 year old Parkes resident Jenelle Tomlinson, who has been the primary carer for her husband David, since 2013. In recent years the couple also welcomed Jennelle’s mother Pam and their grandson Markus into their home.

Jennelle’s life changed suddenly in 2013 when her husband David fell from a grain silo at work – an accident he wasn’t expected to survive.

In the first few years after the accident, Jennelle provided daily care for David and organised medical care and appointments while working full-time. David has since recovered, but the accident left him with a brain injury that sometimes affects his speech. He also lives with physical limitations.

In January 2020 Jennelle’s mother Pam, now 90, moved into their home. In order to care for both her husband and mother, Jennelle had left her job in 2021.

Jennelle manages the grocery shopping, washing, cleaning, and general household tasks. She also takes Pam to appointments and tries to schedule manageable, wheelchair-friendly activities outside of the house to help her mum stay social.

“Sometimes asking for help is just another thing on my to-do list” said Janelle.

Providing care at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic was a lonely time for Jennelle. Her siblings couldn’t provide the support they had promised for their mum, and Jennelle struggled with the confinement and isolation of her situation. Having Markus, 15, come to live with his grandparents part-time has brought joy to the household.

In early 2023, accessing respite care for her mum allowed Jennelle to take a well-earned break, thanks to Carer Gateway.

Fresh Spark For Old Fire Station

July 6, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Some of the Parkes Antique Motor Club’s Executive are pictured at the handing over of the keys of the former Parkes Fire Station from Scott Tucker, of the NSW Dept of Planning and Environment, and Craig Gibson, Captain of Parkes Fire and Rescue. Behind them, and in the old Station’s driveway, is the Club’s 1926 Garford; the same as the first motorised Fire Appliance to be stationed in Parkes, when the former Station was opened in 1924.

The NSW Government is giving the old Parkes Fire Station building a new lease on life as a fire brigade museum, appointing the Parkes Antique Motor Club as Crown Land Managers.

The Parkes Antique Motor Club plans to revive the site as a museum to be opened to the community on special occasions, and on request of visiting tourist groups.

The Parkes Fire Brigade dates back to 1878 when it was first formed with a board of control headed by the town mayor, with a shed building erected in 1879 at the rear of the local courthouse to store fire brigade equipment.

The town’s first fire brigade station was built on land owned by the justice department and then a new, larger station was completed in 1924 at a cost of £1,564 at the corner of Court and Hill Streets.

In 2017 it was announced Parkes would get a new state-of-the-art fire station with two engine bays, which was completed in 2020 behind the former station that will now serve as a museum.

Crown Lands in the Department of Planning and Environment has appointed the motor club as the Crown Land Manager for the Want Street reserve.

Parkes Antique Car Club President Phil Dixon said “The old fire station is a beautiful building and all of our members are very enthusiastic and happy to be able to showcase our historic equipment there to do something positive for the town.”
