Grain growers in the Parkes region are being urged to attend an upcoming grower meeting to discuss issues around grains research and development, levy rates and reviews and the impact on growers.

The Grains R&D: Your levies, your views consultation, organised by GrainGrowers as part of its representative organisation (RO) role with the GRDC, will take place in Parkes on Thursday 11 September at the Parkes Services Club, 10:30am – 12pm.

In total, meetings will be held in 18 regional centres across five states from 2 September through until 16 October. The Parkes meeting is one of four being held across NSW.

GrainGrowers CEO Shona Gawel said the meetings are an ideal opportunity for growers to consider the current situation, to put forward their thoughts on the issues and raise questions that they would like considered and answered.

Ms Gawel said in recent months there had been many discussions about grains research and development, and it was important to engage as widely as possible with growers.

“As a grower member organisation, direct engagement is in our DNA, and these meetings are designed to allow us to listen and to reflect carefully on the next steps.”

“While our members are free to contact us at any time, growers across Australia now have multiple opportunities to come together to discuss.

“The full schedule of consultations is available via our website. For anyone unable to attend, we will be holding a virtual session at a later date to encourage the widest possible consultation,” Ms Gawel said.

Flying High For Mental Health – In Memory Of Corey Woodhouse

August 28, 2025 By Roxane Manley

The lives of Jason and Michelle Woodhouse, and their family were drastically changed when their son Corey Woodhouse (14) of Forbes unexpectedly took his own life in August 2023. It forever altered their lives and Corey’s father Jason Woodhouse said, “Our journey of pain will never end and nothing will change what has happened, but we wish to raise awareness of the services available for the families and youth of Forbes and surrounds.”

Since their loss, Jason and Michelle have been doing what they can to raise money and awareness for mental health. During the month of August they have been selling red paper planes at Bernardis Forbes and at Coles in Parkes, Dubbo, Lithgow, Orange, Bathurst, Katoomba, Wellington, Cowra, Mudgee and Narromine. They have already raised over $10,000 and the planes are still on sale until 31 August. Tag them @FlyHighforMentalHealth when you see the planes.

They also held a free mental health event and charity auction in Forbes on Saturday 23 August. The event raised over $2,000 and the Fly High for Mental Health Auction raised over $14,000. All funds will be equally donated between Kids Helpline and Headspace to help kids across Australia“We are grateful that so many people have supported us in time, effort and generous donations. Thank you to everyone involved, from helpers, friends and family to businesses that donated items and the community who made donations and attended the event,” said Jason.

Multiple Upgrades Complete On The Bogan Way

August 28, 2025 By Roxane Manley

A series of major upgrades to The Bogan Way are complete, transforming more than 25 kilometres of this vital regional freight route and improving safety and access across the Parkes Shire.

Seven projects made up the $15.7 million Parkes Shire North South Link (MR350) Project. This included three projects funded by more than $4.5 million from the Australian Government under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, and over $9 million from the New South Wales Government.

The Bogan Way is a regional road link that provides a vital north-south road train route through the Narromine, Parkes and Forbes shires in central west NSW. It supports transport operators connecting producers to grain silos and the Central West Livestock Exchange, and is a vital haulage and residential access route.

The completed works enable higher productivity vehicles, including AB Triples, to safely use the route, thanks to addressing pavement rehabilitation, widening, realignment, culvert replacement, and the installation of wire rope barriers.

Parkes Mayor Neil Westcott said, “The council is fortunate to have the staff and expertise to deliver projects of this scale in-house, supporting our community while dramatically improving safety.”

Campaign To Keep Branches Open In Regional Australia

August 28, 2025 By Roxane Manley

Central West Credit Union CEO Ron Hetherington.

Central West Credit Union (CWCU), Bank Orange and Family First Bank have joined 22 other regional banks and community organisations to advocate to keep face-toface branches open in regional towns.

The organisations have formed the Regional Banking Investment Alliance (RBIA) and want essential bank branch services such as cash handling and fraud advice to be supported by a community service obligation (CSO) on the wider Australian banking sector to share the cost burden.

Despite inquiries and taskforces, big banks have closed more than 90 regional branches since February 2022, including more than a dozen this year.

CEO of CWCU, Ron Hetherington, said, “The big four banks alone made more than $31billion in profit last year, but continue to walk away from the communities that helped build their success”.“It’s time to meet our community service obligations and support the banks that stay so that they can continue to provide the face-to-face banking services that Australians need.”

The Alliance have been garnering support from community groups, with the Country Women’s Association (CWA) NSW, Regional HQ, Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association (CPSA) and National Seniors signing on as supporters.

CEO of CWA NSW, Danica Leys said, “Regional and rural Australia is the lifeblood of Australia. Many families in the regions rely on their local branch for not just face-to-face banking services, but for employment and sponsorships.

“Regional banks keep their profits local and are helping our country towns thrive.

People in rural Australia should not miss out on essential services.”

With the finalisation of a cash mandate on the government’s agenda, a new consultation on cash distribution, and continuation of branch closures from larger banks, the Alliance hopes to continue work with the government on creating an environment where face-to-face branch services and fair cash distribution is available, no matter where you live in Australia.

Teresa Knowles Celebrates 15 Year Career Milestone

August 28, 2025 By Roxane Manley

Lochie Pettiford and Teresa Knowles from Parkes Pharmacy.

Parkes resident Teresa Knowles knows that in today’s fast-paced world, it’s rare to stay in the same workplace for long. Which is why she is so proud to have reached a 15-year milestone at Parkes Pharmacy.

Teresa was first introduced to the pharmacy industry during her Year 10 work experience and admits, from that time on, she was hooked and has loved helping the community since. The senior pharmacy assistant joined the Life Pharmacy Group back in 2010 and today is a familiar and trusted face to those in the community.

“I love engaging with customers, talking to the community and helping them feel just a little bit better,” Teresa said.

“The beauty of community pharmacy is we have a close connection to our staff and customers – at the end of the day, it really is the people who make this role so rewarding.”

Teresa said some of the highlights over the past 15 years include winning the Parkes Business Awards Excellence in Retail Award in 2017 and representing Parkes Pharmacy in the popular Elvis Festival.

Managing Partner and Pharmacist in Charge at Parkes Pharmacy, Lochie Pettiford, said this milestone is reflective of Teresa’s passion and loyalty.

“Teresa’s dedication to both Parkes Pharmacy and the wider community over the years has been truly outstanding,” Managing Partner at Parkes Pharmacy, Lochie Pettiford, said.

“Teresa is known for her bubbly and vibrant personality and goes above and beyond to ensure our customers and staff are treated well. We’re incredibly grateful for Teresa’s commitment – she is a wonderful attribute to LPG.”

The Parkes Pharmacy team held a special morning tea to celebrate Teresa’s milestone.

Calare Lions Club Donates $2000 To Parkes Meals On Wheels

August 28, 2025 By Roxane Manley

The Calare Lions Club is a relatively new club, having been chartered in June 2023.

They started out with a few members who had a common purpose; to fundraise to assist others in the community. Their focus is on improving mental health and wellbeing through organisations such as Meals on Wheels.

A Club representative said, “We started out with very little and through support from other local Lions Clubs we have managed to raise funds through our Fundraising efforts.

“We are mostly made up of retired police, ambos, firies SES and mental health workers. We have lost a few members over that time for one reason or another.

“At the moment we are actively looking for new members across Calare that may have a vision like us, to help and support others in the community, through their own fundraising events.”

Some of the organisations the Calare Lions Club have assisted over the last two years include, but not limited to are: Country Education Foundation Orange, Standby Support after Suicide, Orange, Headspace Bathurst. Street Heart Bathurst, Defence Community Dogs and PCYC.

The club would like to further support organisations within Calare and seek further membership in order to achieve this.

Aged Care You Can Count On – Right Here In Our Community

August 28, 2025 By Roxane Manley

At the heart of every Meals on Wheels service is a simple but powerful mission: to support the wellbeing, independence, and connection of older people in our community. In Parkes and Forbes, this mission has been carried out with dedication and care for decades — and today, we’re proud to share a new chapter in that story.

Meals on Wheels Parkes and Meals on Wheels Forbes are coming together to strengthen the future of local meal delivery and community support. This collaboration between two like-minded services, working together to ensure that our communities continue to receive the care they deserve, now and into the future.

While some changes will take place behind the scenes, our clients and volunteers can rest assured:

• The services you know and trust are staying the same.

• Clients will continue to receive the same friendly service, with the same caring volunteers.

• There will be no changes to volunteer roles or support.

• Both Parkes and Forbes offices will remain open and active.

• A combined staff and administration team will now work across both locations.

• Most excitingly, we’ll be able to offer some additional services to meet the growing needs of our communities.

This new structure allows us to pool our resources, share our strengths, and work more efficiently, all while keeping our focus firmly on the people we serve. By coming together, we’re future-proofing Meals on Wheels for both towns, ensuring that our support for older residents remain strong, responsive, and local.

We are deeply grateful to our volunteers, staff, and supporters who make this work possible every day. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected future for Meals on Wheels in Parkes and Forbes.

Wednesday 27 August was National Meals on Wheels Day, a day to celebrate the local volunteers, customers and community members who make it all possible. Under this year’s theme, “Aged Care You Can Count On”, Meals on Wheels is proudly reaffirming its promise to be a trusted, reliable presence in the lives of older Australians.

“For more than 70 years, Meals on Wheels has delivered more than just meals. We bring nourishment, safety and a friendly face to some of the most vulnerable people in our community, and we do it with heart.”
