11 Days Of Double Demerits For The Christmas Holidays

December 14, 2023 By Roxane Manley

“We want everyone to make it to and from their holiday destinations safely this Christmas,” Acting Sergeant Tolley said.

Double demerit points will be in force for 11 days over the Christmas and New Year period.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said that double demerit points would run from Friday 22 December 2023 to Monday 1 January 2024 inclusive for all speeding, seatbelt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences.

Ms Suitor said double demerit points have proven to be an effective road safety initiative to make holiday travel safer for everyone.

“Traffic on roads to popular holiday destinations, increases by up to 50% during the Christmas and the New Year holiday period, so it is important to obey all the road rules and drive safely.

“Drivers should ensure they are well rested and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol before they get behind the wheel. While driving, focus on driving. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by your mobile phone, follow the road rules and drive at a speed suitable for conditions. Make sure that you and your passengers are buckled up.

Parkes Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Joshua Tolley is warning drivers that they are at greatest risk of losing their licence during this period.

“There will be more Police on the roads which means a greater chance of drivers being caught if they are doing the wrong thing.

“Too often we see the tragic aftermath of drivers making poor decisions. No-one wants to get a fine, lose their licence or worse still be involved in a crash.

About Forbes North Public School

December 14, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Students at Forbes North Public School this year.

Forbes North Public School is located on the lands of the Galari river people within the Wiradjuri nation on an expansive eleven-acre site, naturally decorated with stands of established endemic trees hosting a variety of native birds and animals, coupled with a large orchard and commercial kitchen which is part of one of Australia’s first schools to pilot the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Since 2009, our expansive ornamental gardens have been maintained and harvested by our students and staff.

Since 1957, the school has offered quality education in a safe and engaging learning environment from Kindergarten to Year 6. This is inclusive of our best practice Link Up to School program, enabling young children to prepare for school on the same site. Our playground is spacious containing an all-weather undercover court for multiple sports and games, a common playground leading to our Wiradjuri room and Yarning circle shaded by the Aboriginal flag at the heart of the school representing a focus on first nations’ people and culture and supporting the cultural traditions of our 118 Aboriginal students.

Our new library now contains hundreds of titles in children’s literature and our multi-purpose hall is home to Forbes Learning Ladder after school care and is used four days per week hosting a variety of community engagement events and gatherings. Each day, we offer after school care and school holiday vacation is present all year round. Playground equipment on a large scale has been added in 2023 including a tractor, boat and kitchen café in the infants’ playgrounds next to our canteen preparing nutritious meals five days per week and the Cove where a large indoor play-based area was opened in June.

Forbes North is a School as Community Centre site offering supported playgroup, transition programs, parenting programs and adult learning courses for our diverse and growing community. Forbes North is consistently praised for its welcoming and inclusive teaching and learning environment with dedicated staff, community volunteers organising programs such as Brekky Club 5 days per week and an energetic Parents and Citizens Association. In 2023, we partnered with Forbes Bus Lines to initiate a first in the Central West with a daily attendance bus which has boosted overall school attendance to above average levels.

Hayden Mcdonald Completes Incredible Solo Circumnavigation Of Australia

December 14, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Hayden (Second from left) made a scheduled stop in Parkes on the 28th of September and visited Currajong Disabilities.

Trailblazing autistic pilot Hayden McDonald has completed his inspiring solo circumnavigation of Australia, proving his flying competence and that he should be judged on his ability, not disability.

Hayden, 22, touched down at Myrup Airstrip in Esperance at 3pm (WA time) 11th Dec, rounding out a three-month mission, in which he has travelled more than 8000 nautical miles in over 80 hours of flying around the country.

The unaccompanied flight is believed to be the first of its kind attempted by an autistic pilot.

“Finishing this flight is a dream come true,” Hayden said.

Over the past three months, Hayden has visited Whyalla, Port Augusta, Orroroo, Broken Hill, Mildura, Charleston, Parkes, Warnervale, Dalby, Bundaberg, Longreach, Mount Isa, Tennant Creek, Kununurra, Broome, Port Hedland, Karratha, Carnarvon, Bunbury and Albany.

The trip has covered more than 8000 nautical miles in around 80 hours of flying.

“Not only have I proven my capability as an autistic pilot, but most importantly, I have been welcomed into towns and communities across Australia in my efforts to build greater acceptance and understanding of autism and neurodiversity.”

Hayden embarked on the ambitious flight, leaving Esperance on September 8 in his small Jabiru J120 light aircraft he affectionately calls ‘7315’.

He traversed South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory, but was forced to pause the trip in Kununurra on October 30 due to widespread bushfires and smoke making visibility poor and too dangerous to fly.

He returned to the skies two weeks ago, leaving Kununurra on November 29 before travelling down the west coast, completing his final leg from Albany to Esperance yesterday.

Landing in Esperance, Hayden was welcomed by local community members including his mother, acclaimed fiction author Fleur McDonald, and flying mentor Jonathon Emmanuel.

Hayden’s love of aviation started as a young child when he would fly with this grandfather.

That fondness grew and at the age of 15 he took to the cockpit himself, obtaining a recreational pilot’s certificate at 19.

But his dream of flying with the Royal Flying Doctor Service was crushed when the Civil Aviation Safety Authority denied him the opportunity of a medical because he is autistic.

Hayden said he had been disheartened after his medical was refused on the grounds his “autism spectrum disorder represents unacceptable risk to aeronautical navigation”.

So, he founded Wings Without Barriers to help lobby for change.

“I would like to thank everyone for all of the incredible support I have received over the past three months,” Hayden said.

“From my sponsors to all the towns that welcomed me, and the schools, Rotary groups and community organisations who invited me to speak about my journey to help achieve greater acceptance and understanding for autistic and neurodiverse Australians – thank you.

“I would also like to thank my family and in particular, Jonathon Emanuel, who has offered endless guidance and words of wisdom during this journey. The support is greatly appreciated.

“This journey may now be over, but my passion and drive to promote true inclusion is not.

“I will continue to campaign loudly so that autism is not regarded as a medical issue. We need to foster real understanding to stop autistic and neurodiverse Australians being stigmatised and discriminated against. Things need to change.”

Public Urged To Take Precautions As Hot Weather Predicted

December 7, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Beat the heat by heading down to your local swimming pool. Pictured is the Parkes Aquatic Centre.

Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) is reminding people to be cautious and have a plan to beat the heat during extreme temperatures forecast across the region for the rest of the week and into the weekend.

Priscilla Stanley, WNSWLHD Public Health Director, said temperatures are expect to reach upward of, and in some areas above, 40 degrees Celsius across the District in the coming days.

Ms Stanley urged people to understand how heat can affect their health and take precautions, particularly those at greater risk like older people, people with existing medical conditions, pregnant women, babies and young people, outdoor workers and socially-isolated people.

“This summer is predicted to be very hot. For a lot of our District this appears to be one of the first real tastes of that extreme weather, so I encourage everyone to take the risk of heat-related illness seriously,” Ms Stanley said.

“Heat can impact anyone and it puts a lot of stress on the body. It causes dehydration, heat stroke and heat exhaustion. These conditions can cause serious illness, hospital admission or even death and extreme heat can make underlying health conditions worse.”

Statement On Passage Of Nature Repair Bill

December 7, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Pictured is NFF CEO, Tony Mahar.

We welcome the passage of the Nature Repair Bill through the Senate last night.

The NFF has been an advocate for the establishment of natural capital markets which can reward farmers for the work they do as stewards of more than half of Australia’s landmass.

The Nature Repair Bill is one step to unlocking capital so farmers can invest more in caring for their country.

We’re concerned however that a rushed political deal with the Greens has delivered a weaker bill than we’ve been working towards for almost a decade. It could and should have been much better.

Farmers would have liked to see protections included for prime agricultural land, and limits on participation by public land assets – the restoration of which should continue to be publicly funded.

The exclusion of offsets in the final bill is peculiar. As an established function of the EPBC Act, we would have welcomed the increased rigour and transparency of having offsets valued and traded in whatever marketplace ultimately emerges from this new framework.

The establishment of a functioning marketplace must now be the priority. As we’ve said throughout this process, this legislation does not constitute a marketplace. It simply lays the groundwork for one to be established.

We look forward to working with the Government to establish a functioning marketplace off the back of this legislation, and will continue to advocate for meaningful funding in the Federal Budget to support a new market in its infancy.

Remote Vaccinations The Focus Of Pharmacists

December 7, 2023 By Roxane Manley

AGED CARE residents in rural and remote New South Wales will be given the gift of critical COVID-19 vaccinations this Christmas, as figures show just 38% of aged care residents have received a booster shot.

Life Pharmacy Group (LPG) Pharmacists from Forbes, Parkes, Dubbo, and Bathurst are travelling across the state to deliver, and administer, hundreds of vaccinations to patients in residential aged care facilities.

The LPG team will visit sites in Balranald, Bourke, Cobar, Condobolin, Gulgong, Kandos, Mudgee, Orange, Parkes, Rylstone, Wellington, and Yeoval, from 5 December travelling by car and aircraft to reach the remote areas.

It comes as an eighth COVID wave grips NSW, threatening holiday festivities for a third year.

“We’re going to centres which, quite often, may not have a GP or pharmacy in those towns so our stores are offering outreach services to assist the vulnerable patients in those communities that otherwise don’t have a health professional to assist with vaccinations,” Owner, and Pharmacist in Charge of Orana Mall Pharmacy Dubbo, Lisa Gibson said.

“Reduced vaccination rates are part of the increase in cases, which means people’s immunity is wearing off from those boosters that most of us have had, either earlier in the year or in previous years. As people come together more frequently towards Christmas and new year, the potential for cluster outbreaks increases.”

The Australia Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recommended all adults aged 75 years and older, should receive an additional COVID-19 booster vaccine dose if six months have passed since their last dose[2].

In a similar initiative in June of this year, the LPG team delivered more than 600 vaccines to aged care residents in remote locations across NSW.

Collaboration To Benefit Indigenous Businesses

December 7, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) and National Australia Bank (NAB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the design and development of an Indigenous Business Guarantee. Pictured is IBA and NAB at the signing of the MoU.

IBA and NAB collaborate to support more Indigenous businesses to access capital.

The guarantee will enable IBA and NAB to support more Indigenous business customers to access capital through access to NAB’s specialist bankers and commercial lending solutions.

The MoU also outlines how IBA and NAB will work together to provide Indigenous businesses with access to mainstream banking services and improve financial education and training for Indigenous business owners.

Noel Prakash, NAB Executive, Indigenous Business Banking, believes NAB’s business banking strength can support First Nations business growth.

“Businesses play an integral role in strengthening First Nations leadership and creating opportunities for communities to succeed. First Nations businesses are leading the charge by driving self-determination, and rapidly improving financial capability and inclusion.

“NAB has set a new target to more than double our lending to First Nations businesses and community organisations to at least $1 billion over the next three years.”

IBA’s CEO Kirsty Moore leads the Commonwealth entity with a vision for a nation in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are economically independent and an integral part of the economy.

“IBA exists to enhance and support the economic development opportunities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia. This collaboration with NAB serves to broaden IBA’s impact within the business sector.

“Aligned with the recent 2023 Indigenous Business Month theme, ‘To Gather, Together’, the collaboration with NAB works to bring resources together that benefit our First Nations businesses and we look forward to seeing this sector grow.”

Singing Star Jason Owen Delivers Presents To Rural Kids

December 7, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Doin It For Rural Kids founder Jason Owens and his partner Bec and daughter Lyla. This is how their living room looks each year as they individually wrap each present that they will then hand deliver and donate to rural kids across multiple states.

Country music singer Jason Owen will this year be handing out a very special present to kids when he embarks on his annual road trip for the charity he founded, Doin it for Rural Aussie Kids.

The X Factor star has put together an inspirational activity booklet for kids entitled Yowie, along with his charity co-founder wife Becy. Apart from being an Australian folklore bush creature, Yowie also is an acronym for whom the booklet is targeting – Youth living in the Outback, Working hard to Inspire and Encourage.

Yowie features inspirational stories about 15 incredible Australians from all walks of life who grew up in rural and far off areas and thrived despite their personal challenges.

Jason will be handing out the booklet, toys and school supplies to isolated primary school children across NSW in early December along with a motivational talk.

“I always explain to kids how I grew up in tiny Albert, NSW, and managed to make my dream of being an entertainer come true, despite being the only child in an isolated town of just 12 people,” Jason says. “I went through struggles with PTSD following a motorbike accident when I was 11 which almost killed my dad and I.

“It also features how kids can turn to Kids Helpline to talk if they are struggling. I’ve always wanted kids in the bush to know that they can achieve anything they want in life despite their circumstances as long as they work hard and believe in themselves.”
