Anita Spring’s Tribute To Olivia Newton John

January 7, 2025 By Roxane Manley

Anita Spring will be performing live on the Cooke Park Main Stage, Wednesday, 8 January at 7pm and Friday, 10 January at 6:45pm.

Country music artist, and Olivia Newton John Tribute Artist, Anita Spring, will be at this year’s Parkes Elvis Festival performing Olivia Newton-John’s music with her tribute show “Forever Olivia”. Anita was Born in WA, her parents are both musicians, her dad was in the Troupadors with Jonny O’Keefe and her mum toured with local and international Artists including Bob Hope.

“I’ve loved country music from a young age, my parents were always playing and learning great music for their shows. I started writing my own songs when I was 17, I was signed to Universal Musical on a six album deal, my first single “Blink – stay a little longer” reached No.7 on the ARIA Australian Singles chart” said Anita.

The idea for the “Forever Olivia” tribute show came after an Elvis Tour, An American Trilogy. “The Elvis Tribute Artists were encouraging me to have my own Tribute Show and it came to me straight away, Olivia Newton-John. I loved her music and loved singing her songs and so I started putting an Olivia tribute show together five years ago” said Olivia.

Anita’s “Forever Olivia” show will take audiences on a journey through her biggest hits, from “Physical” to “I Honestly Love You” and beyond“My first memory of Olivia was watching Grease. I think the whole world fell in love with Olivia after that film was released, she was so beautiful and incredibly talented.”

2025 will be Anita’s fourth Parkes Festival. Anita said “I performed my Forever Olivia Show on the main stage twice last year and I am so excited to be returning again this year. It’s an absolute honour. This tribute show for me is a dream come true, I love performing Olivia’s music and I hope the audience can see how much I do.”

Put Homegrown Parkes In Your 2025 Calendar

January 7, 2025 By Roxane Manley

The popular Crop Swap is an opportunity to bring your produce, including vegetables, herbs, fruit, jams etc and swap it, while catching up with other people who also want to share fresh food locally.

The Homegrown Parkes event is an opportunity for local and regional businesses and individuals who are processing, repurposing, sewing, propagating or producing fabulous local products, to share their skill and products with the community.

Homegrown Parkes was recently awarded the Community Spirit and Inclusion Award at the 2024 Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns NSW Awards.

Demonstrations will again be one of the highlights of the 2025 events, highlighting processes for using locally produced food and products with the aim of encouraging locals to grow produce in their own backyard – or at least increase their consciousness of food miles and purchasing locally.

Education is an important part of Homegrown Parkes, encouraging our community to grow and prepare their own produce and supporting local and regional small businesses is an important element of the event. The inclusion of a Crop Swap at the event allows locals to share excess produce and encourage others.

Homegrown Parkes will provide an opportunity for visitors and locals to fill their Saturday in Parkes with plenty of good food and local produce! The autumn event will be held on Saturday, 29 March and the Spring event will be held on Saturday, 11 October. These events are being held between 9am and 2pm in Cooke Park.

The Homegrown Parkes Committee, consists of members of Central West Lachlan Landcare, Parkes Community Arts and Parkes Shire Council.

If you are interested in joining us for either Homegrown Parkes events, make sure you follow our social media, find out more information via our website at https://centralwestlachlanlandcare.org/get-involved/homegrown-parkes/ or contact Marg Applebee on 0418 611 053 or homegrownparkes@gmail.com

You Ain’t Nothing But A Hound Dog

January 7, 2025 By Roxane Manley

See you at Friday’s red carpet event on Elvis Presley Boulevard (out the front of Ray White).

Gail Richardson is a mother of two, a carer for her sister, a Property Manager at Ray White Parkes, and the owner and qualified trainer of Bartley’s Barkers.

Gail started Bartley’s Barkers with her first dog CJ, a Red Cloud Kelpie, approximately 20 years ago. In addition to providing one-on-one training in Parkes at her training facilities, Gail can also provide training via skype. Gail claims, “A dog is only ever as good as the owner is at training it.”

“I also work with adults and children that have scare issues with dogs and children who have learning issues or are on the spectrum,” continued Gail.

Gail came up with the idea for the Hound Dog competition six years ago and presented it to the committee as a concept that would add to the festival. “Elvis loved dogs and horses, so Hound Dog was an easy fit,” said Gail.

The Hound Dog competition will be held on Friday 10 January outside the Ray White Office on Clarinda Street. The competition features three categories: best dressed Elvis festival themed, best dressed owner/dog combo and best dressed Elvis jumpsuit. Entry is $10 per dog and they can enter one or all categories. Dogs must walk the red carpet where they will be judged and prizes awarded. Entry forms are available at the Ray White Office or by calling 6862 1900 and the cut-off time is 9am on the day of the event.

Strategy To Secure Lachlan’s Water Future

December 19, 2024 By Roxane Manley

The NSW Government has launched the Lachlan Regional Water Strategy, a longterm plan to meet the water needs of the region and support water security for Parkes, Cowra, Forbes, and other communities across the Lachlan for the next 20 years and beyond.

The strategy provides a clearer pathway for a more resilient and sustainable water future, progressing a range of solutions to shore up water for residents, farmers, businesses, Aboriginal people and the environment.

We have consulted widely with the community throughout the plan’s development, and we’ve received significant input which informed the final strategy and its actions.

The strategy is also underpinned by new, groundbreaking climate data and state-of-the-art modelling, allowing us to better understand and plan for future water security risks.

New environmental data for the Lachlan Valley is now available on our online portal, showing modelled streamflow and storage volume data under different climate scenarios, including long-term projections. This will help local water utilities, industry, and community groups better plan for their water futures.

Tafe NSW Graduate Brendan Bates Celebrates High Score

December 19, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Gunningbland local Brendan Bates has been named a Top 50 TPC Graduate.

As school leavers across the state received their HSC results, there were 50 TAFE NSW graduates who were celebrating their success in a university preparation course that provides access to universities without the HSC.

Gunningbland local, Brendan Bates, is one of the high-scoring graduates who studied a Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation and received a Tertiary Entrance Score of an ATAR equivalent of at least 97.

The Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation is a nationally accredited qualification offering a Tertiary Entrance Score, an ATAR equivalent, recognised by universities and employers as a year 12 equivalent qualification.

Jobs and Skills Australia estimates more than 90 per cent of employment growth over the next 10 years will be in jobs requiring post-secondary qualifications.

For TAFE Digital graduate, Brendan Bates, the flexibility of studying remotely has enabled him to continue his schooling and be one step closer to achieving his dream of one day going to university.

“Living in a rural area has meant access to schooling hasn’t been easy. That’s why TAFE Digital has been a lifeline. By studying online and being supported by my teachers in an independent learning environment has allowed me to study from home, without needing to travel long distances.”

“The Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation has given me a solid grounding in critical subjects and fuelled my passion for Mathematics. I’ll soon find out if I’ve got a place at the University of Southern Queensland to study a Diploma of Science. I’m excited about the next chapter and grateful to TAFE Digital for teaching me the skills I need to pursue a career in STEM.” Brendan said.

Parkes High School’s New Edible Garden Helps Students Grow

December 12, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Parkes High School students building the herb gardens.

Gardening has been unofficially added to the curriculum at Parkes High School’s special education unit, where three new herb gardens mark the beginning of a 12-month edible garden project.

Students are working with the Bunnings store in Forbes to build the edible garden, which will include six raised garden beds for herbs and bush tucker, plus a mini orchard containing six different fruit trees.

Bunnings is donating the materials, plants, potting mix and the time of its team members to build the garden at the school.

The store is also donating a cantilever umbrella to provide shelter in the garden and native plants and paint to refresh the school’s yarning circle.

The first three herb gardens were built in late November, with five students rolling up their sleeves to help.

“Some of these boys had never assisted in the garden before, they’d normally rather be inside gaming,” said Bunnings Forbes Activity Organiser George Barnes.

“But they jumped at the opportunity to get their hands dirty and get involved in building the herb gardens.

“Seeing kids who don’t get outside very often get so much joy from this project is so rewarding.”

Mr Barnes said the partnership with Parkes High School, one of 120 community organisations Bunnings Forbes supports, started before Covid. Other projects it has supported at the school includes building a pride garden in June this year.

Parkes High School special education teacher Hugh Wood approached Mr Barnes about doing another garden this year and the pair decided on the edible garden. The edible garden will continue to take shape over much of the 2025 school year.
