The Best Dressed Event In Parkes

June 13, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Left to right: Best Dressed Couple Sally Martin and Trevor Dhu, Mc Natalie Perin, Stylish Man Jared Child, Elegant Lady Bryana Green, Millinery Judy Hannah, Judge Judy Dr Jane Kaczmarek and Picnic Races President Tim Keith.

Rain, hail, or shine, on the June long weekend every year, the gates open for one of the premier events on the Parkes social calendar, the Parkes Picnic Races. Despite the horses not running this year due to the wet conditions, the crowd still turned up in droves, to enjoy the atmosphere out at the Parkes Racecourse.

The Parkes Picnic Races is a must attend event for locals, beginning its long history at the Parkes Racecourse back in 1886, with the first Parkes Cup held in 1887. Since then, the cup has been held annually, except during World War Two (between 1939 and 1945).

The event is always a great day of racing, live music, children’s entertainment, and the ever popular Fashions on the Field. For more images from this year, check out their socials #parkespicnicraces.

Attending Local Events Strengthens Neighbourhood Bonds

June 13, 2024 By Roxane Manley

From farmers markets to food festivals, art exhibitions and how-to workshops, local community events are often the lifeblood of thriving neighbourhoods.

Researchers have investigated how often people visit and actively participate in local events and how this affects their sense of place or their connection to their community.

A survey of almost 400 households found that people who frequently attend local events or participate as volunteers, organisers or exhibitors, have a stronger sense of place, meaning their neighbourhood is important to them and they feel connected to the area.

Those who regularly attend local events are also likely to be more satisfied with their neighbourhood and are more willing to live there longer. While owning a home or living there are influential factors in a person developing a sense of place, this study found that regularly attending local events had a greater impact on fostering a sense of place than length of residency and home ownership.

Social benefits are particularly important to rebuilding local communities after the pandemic, during which social connections and broader community life were affected by lockdowns and social distancing measures.

Popular local events can also become attractions for visitors by showcasing the culture of the area. By contributing to the uniqueness of places, events are well positioned to play an essential role in developing the tourism sector of urban and regional destinations.

We still need to further our understanding of the role that events play in social sustainability. Understanding how events can help build socially sustainable communities is vital in justifying government investment in local events.

Parkes Unveils Water Play Space At Kelly Reserve

May 31, 2024 By Roxane Manley

The completion of this project marks a significant milestone for the Parkes community, enhancing recreational opportunities and promoting water education in a fun and engaging manner.

Parkes Shire Council is pleased to announce that the transformation of Kelly Reserve into the town’s first water play space is now complete.

Moduplay Commercial Systems, the project contractor, has created an engaging recreational space inspired by the natural features of the local Lachlan catchment.

The play space was designed to emulate the region’s water features, including rivers, lakes, dams, weirs, and bores. It offers a captivating educational experience with informative signage detailing Parkes’ water story—from source to consumption.

Councillor Jacob Cass expressed his delight at the project’s successful completion.

“We are thrilled to see this exciting addition to Parkes come to life, providing our community with a dynamic and accessible space for play, learning, relaxation and socialisation,” Cr Cass said.

“The water play space is the first of its kind in Parkes and includes some wonderful features such as a splash pad, interactive water fountains, bridges, streams, and sand play areas for all to enjoy,” he added.

Innovation, inclusivity, and accessibility was at the forefront of this project, ensuring that people of all ages and abilities can engage in play.

The water play space opened to the public on Saturday 25 May, with the splash pad to be activated in October to coincide with the opening of the Parkes pool for the summer season.

CCTV has been installed at the park with 24/7 monitoring to help keep it safe from vandals.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, the NSW Government’s Places to Play grant program, Evolution Mining Northparkes Operations and Parkes Shire Council.

Neighbourhood Central’s Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme is bringing members of the community together and they are looking for more Volunteer Visitors.

This program is funded by the federal government as part of its Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, which provides friendship and companionship to eligible older people by matching them with a volunteer visitor who will visit regularly and become a friend. This scheme helps to improve their quality of life by reducing social isolation.

At Neighbourhood Central, Bonita Gwyn and Gloria Jarrick have been volunteer visitors for quite some time now and have formed a beautiful friendship with Margaret Wheeler. The ladies meet every week for a catch up and a few games of cards. Margaret looks forward to her visits with Bonita and Gloria and has expressed how much she enjoys their company and having someone to play cards with.

Bonita and Gloria expressed that the visits with Margaret does as much good for them as it does for Margaret.

Brooke from Neighbourhood Central said, “As an aged care volunteer visitor coordinator, it is wonderful to sit and have a conversation with matches that have been made and witness in person the beautiful friendships that have formed and continue to grow with each visit.”

Being an Aged Care Volunteer Visitor can be incredibly rewarding; by having meaningful conversations, you can drastically improve the quality of life for an older person.

Volunteers from all social and cultural backgrounds from Forbes, Parkes and Condobolin are encouraged to join the program. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer visitor, please contact Brooke at Neighbourhood Central.

If you would like to brighten the days of older people as a volunteer, or if you would

like to request a visitor, please contact Brooke at Neighbourhood Central on 1300 810 771 or email: admin@ncentral.org.au

Free Online Child Car Seat Safety Workshops

May 2, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Over 30 local families have attended the online workshops since their inception. Participants rated the workshop 4.8 out of 5, said they would be very likely to recommend it to a friend or family member.

Parents, carers and grandparents are invited to attend one of two free online workshops being held to provide important safety information about child car seats.

The workshops are being conducted by Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils in partnership with Transport for NSW West Region.

The workshops will be held via MS Teams, on Tuesday 7 May at 11am and again at 7pm, and will run for about an hour.

The Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said the correct selection, installation and adjustment of child car seats is vital in ensuring children’s safety when travelling in vehicles.

“The workshop will cover the National Child Restraint Laws, types of child car seats available, correct installation and adjustment, when to move to the next car seat, accessories, tips for second-hand car seats and much more.

“It will be a great refresher for grandparents, as child car seats and the rules have changed a lot since they had their children, but also for parents and carers as they are navigating their way through their child or children’s growth.

“The results of our local checking day events show that around 80% of the child car seats that were checked were incorrectly installed. Transport for NSW research shows that children who are not restrained correctly are seven times more likely to sustain life-threatening injuries in a crash than those who are properly secured. It is so important to ensure your precious cargo is safe” Ms Suitor said.

The online workshops were the first of their kind in NSW when they were trialed in May 2023 and were held again in November 2023.

To book your place, visit the event listing on the Councils’ Facebook pages, use this link: https://bit.ly/WorkshopRegoMay24 or call Ms Suitor on (02) 6861 2364.

Connectivity Issues Spotlighted

April 25, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Communities across regional, rural, and remote Australia can now have their say on telecommunications issues as public submissions open on the Regional Telecommunications Review.

The input of local communities will form an essential part of the Review – held once every three years – which will see the Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee deliver recommendations to Government.

The Review is closely examining the experiences of people in regional, rural, and remote parts of Australia with telecommunications delivery, as well as considering the unique needs of First Nations communities.

Residents, businesses and community organisations can make a submission, with the Terms of Reference – announced by Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP – outlining key issues for the Committee to examine. An issues paper has been released to help frame ideas.

Feedback from the public has been essential in previous reviews to ensure the Committee’s recommendations are well-targeted and based on evidence. For this Review there are three options available to have your say: attending a face-to-face consultation, providing a formal submission or completing a survey. The survey will be published in May 2024.

Since March 2024, the Committee has visited Western Australia and Tasmania for face-to-face consultations with local issues also forming an important part of the Committee’s considerations. More locations for face-to-face consultations will be announced shortly.

The 2024 Review is being led by the Hon Alannah MacTiernan, former Western Australian Minister for Regional Development as Chair of the Review Committee. She is supported by the Hon Fiona Nash, Ms Kristy Sparrow, Dr Jessa Rogers and Mr Ian Kelly.

To have your say just visit www.infrastructure.gov.au/have-your-say/2024- regional-telecommunications-review

Chair, the Hon Alannah MacTiernan went on to say “Access to telecommunications services is critical for regional residents and businesses across so many aspects of everyday life – and we want to understand the lived experience of these services so that future policy actions are well-targeted and backed up by evidence.

“We really encourage Australians in the bush to have their say via a submission or completing the survey in coming months, while we continue our face-to-face consultations across the country.

A Passion For A Healthy Parkes Community

April 18, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Pictured is Daniel Wright, MC Peter Buckley, Leanne Rogers at Spirituality in the Pub on 8 April 2024..

The Holy Family Parish hosted a “Spirituality in the Pub’ evening on Monday, 8th of April with two vibrant and inspiring speakers, Leanne Rogers, and Daniel Wright. The event was in the function room at the Coachman Hotel, and many of the audience stayed on for dinner and a chat.

The topic, ‘A Passion for a Healthy Community’, was appropriate to their own lived experiences. Dan has been a paramedic in Parkes (NSW Ambulance Service) for the past 15 years. Dan lost his son Luke to suicide in 2019 and the grief and trauma suffered by his family prompted Dan to work towards preventing these tragedies in our community.

Dan lobbied for Parkes to be chosen as the first regional site for a Safe

Haven site in NSW. He also co-designed the concept of the site which is on the ground floor, Suite 3, 195-199 Clarinda Street. It is a place for people to go if they are feeling distressed or having suicidal thoughts.

People can talk openly about how they are feeling and what they are going through, and they will be supported, not judged.

Leanne grew up in Parkes and by age 18 was in Adelaide studying to become a nurse. After graduating and completing Intensive Care qualifications, she went back to a rural setting where she had opportunities to take on leadership roles and education positions. This included teaching medical students at Flinders Uni rural clinical school with an emphasis on quality, safety and patient focussed care, teaching through realistic healthcare simulation.

As a community we must have concern about each other. Every person’s story matters and a little bit of kindness goes a long way. Is your group, service club, organisation interested in supporting these amazing centres which are fostering community connections and adding new dimensions to the provision of mental health in Parkes?

If so, visit Safe Haven, talk to people like Daniel and Leanne to find out more contact Lynn Rogers, lynnandwayne@bigpond.com.

Ultralight Aircraft To Fly In To Parkes Airport

April 11, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Everyone is invited to come out to the Parkes Airport on the 12th-14th of April to enjoy this family friendly event.

The RAAus event planned for 12-14th April at Parkes Regional Airport will bring large numbers of aircraft and people to Parkes to enjoy and share their love of flying for fun, the event will give the people of the Central West the opportunity to experience the possibilities of affordable, low cost flying with manufacturers exhibiting their aircraft.

Recreational Aviation Australia is the governing body for ultralight aircraft in Australia and their aim is to promote affordable recreational aviation to a great number of Australians who wish to pursue their dream of owning and flying, and even building their own aircraft.

The occasion is the second “Fly’n for fun” fly in at Parkes Regional Airport where a large number of light aircraft are expected to attend, many will take the opportunity to camp under the wings of their aircraft, demonstrating the opportunity for low cost affordable flying trips away for families and groups.

Subject to weather there will be a fire pit and bar operated by Parkes Aero Club to ensure the event will maximise the camaraderie and enjoyment of the participants to enjoy a weekend with like minded people.

Some of the visitors will avail themselves of the many fine hotels and motels in Parkes and enjoy the country hospitality at pubs and restaurants throughout the town.

Aviation has always been a major part of life in Australia and costs and regulation of general aviation flying has put flying out of reach of many people and ultralight flying is an ideal way to get into the air.

Come out to the airport on Friday 12th to Sunday 14th and see how easy and enjoyable it is to get into recreational flying.
