Calare Lions Club Donates $2000 To Parkes Meals On Wheels

August 28, 2025 By Roxane Manley

The Calare Lions Club is a relatively new club, having been chartered in June 2023.

They started out with a few members who had a common purpose; to fundraise to assist others in the community. Their focus is on improving mental health and wellbeing through organisations such as Meals on Wheels.

A Club representative said, “We started out with very little and through support from other local Lions Clubs we have managed to raise funds through our Fundraising efforts.

“We are mostly made up of retired police, ambos, firies SES and mental health workers. We have lost a few members over that time for one reason or another.

“At the moment we are actively looking for new members across Calare that may have a vision like us, to help and support others in the community, through their own fundraising events.”

Some of the organisations the Calare Lions Club have assisted over the last two years include, but not limited to are: Country Education Foundation Orange, Standby Support after Suicide, Orange, Headspace Bathurst. Street Heart Bathurst, Defence Community Dogs and PCYC.

The club would like to further support organisations within Calare and seek further membership in order to achieve this.

Keeping Kids Safe Online Starts At Home

August 21, 2025 By Roxane Manley

It is less than six months before Australia’s social media age restrictions kick in. But while the onus is on social media platforms to prevent underage access, child protection experts say the conversation about online safety doesn’t stop there.

UniSA’s Associate Professor Lesley-Anne Ey says parents and schools must continue online safety conversations, so children can navigate the digital world safely and responsibly – no matter what their age.

“From the moment children start using devices, parents need to be having age-appropriate conversations about the content they access and how they interact and behave online.”

“Because children’s brains are still developing, they often act on impulse without considering consequences. They’re naturally more inclined to take risks and assume they’re safe – but the reality is they’re not, and they need strategies to protect themselves.”

says Associate Professor Ey.

On 10 December, Australia’s new social media laws will take effect, with social media platforms – including TikTok, Snapchat, Reddit, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube – required to take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent children under 16 from having an account on their platform.

The legislation intends to protect young people from being exposed to social media content that could be damaging to their health and wellbeing at too young an age. While legislation is one part of the solution, Assoc Prof Ey says the real impact lies in building digital literacy across all platforms.

Because in the end, it’s not just about keeping children off social media – it’s about giving them the knowledge, confidence and skills to thrive safely in a digital world that will only keep growing.

NSW Nationals Secure Incinerator Inquiry

August 14, 2025 By Roxane Manley

NSW Nationals MP Scott Barrett pictured speaking passionately at the Energy From Waste information night hosted by the Parkes Clean Future Alliance on 26 July.

The NSW Nationals has secured a Parliamentary inquiry into waste to energy incinerators, following concerns almost a million tonnes of extra waste could be sent to the regions each year to help deal with an overflow in Sydney.

The motion was moved in the Upper House by NSW Nationals MP Scott Barrett with fellow Nationals MP Nichole Overall appointed as Chair of the Select Committee.

The inquiry, which originally intended to explore current plans for two large energy recovery facilities in Tarago and Parkes, has now also been expanded to cover other potential areas in regional NSW.

Mrs Overall said “This provides the chance for community members to raise the many questions they have” Mrs Overall said.

“The objective is to fully explore the issues and look at options and alternatives to the ever-growing Sydney waste problem that doesn’t leave some areas worse off than others.”

“People have genuine concerns around the plan and they are coming from a place of wanting answers and information they feel they haven’t received.

“I look forward to working with the Inquiry’s Deputy Chair Dr Amanda Cohn on this matter, and the community members in Parkes who initially reached out to me.

The inquiry will look at matters including the risk of potentially toxic emissions, the health implications of the projects and the impact they will have on agriculture.

Mr Barrett is encouraging people to have their say. “I recently took part in an information night hosted by the Parkes Clean Future Alliance and it’s clear the community feels there are too many unanswered questions.”

“The proposed Parkes incinerator would divert 600,000 tonnes of waste from Sydney, so it’s common sense for that community to have their voices heard, which is something that was sorely missing from the consultation phase of this project.

Vampire Aircraft On Display At HARS Parkes Aviation Museum

July 24, 2025 By Roxane Manley

A de Havilland Vampire dual seat version on display at the HARS Parkes Aviation Museum.

The Forbes Vampire, ‘the aircraft on a pole by the lake’ is a much loved icon for Forbes and attracts aviation enthusiasts travelling the Newell Highway, to see the aircraft.

The aircraft has recently been refurbished and restored to its former glory by Forbes Council and volunteers from the town.

Now, there is a de Havilland Vampire dual seat version on display at the HARS Parkes Aviation Museum, that you can get up close to and learn about the history and development of this unique aircraft.

The Vampire flew at the end of WW2 and adopted the design influence of the de Havilland Mosquito the ‘Wooden Wonder’ that the fuselage pod is constructed of timber.

This design was enormously strong but it was not destined to survive for so long outside. This feature was the subject of the restoration of the Forbes Vampire.

The Museum has over 15 aircraft on display that range from a 4 engine Orion surveillance aircraft that took part in the search for MH370 to a replica of the Red Baron WW1 German fighter and aircraft engines from early jet trainers to a Boeing 747.

Should you have an interest in aviation, preserving history, hands on restorations or tour guiding and would like to volunteer, you can call the museum or speak to any one of our volunteers on duty about the opportunity.

The HARS Parkes Aviation Museum is open from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. Admission is only $30 for a family of 4, adults $15, children under 16 $5. Eftpos is also available. For more information call Mike on 0418 473 175.
