The Summer Sixes GF Winning team with Pres Tony Cogswell. (Pres Tony Cogswell, Team – Jacob Bernardi, Clint Hurford, Damien Kennedy, Adam Currey, Jack Geppart and Adam Demidjuk).

On Saturday 25th March, the mens competition was an Individual Par, sponsored by Forbes Tuesday Golfers. The number of players, 60 in total, were quite good considering the range of activities on offer elsewhere that day.

In Div-1 Reggie Murray produced his best ever score to march away with the honours. He fired an even-par 72 which gave him a score of +7, compiled on the back of a very strong front-9. Runner-up, on count back, was Kim Herbert with +3 who did his best work on the back-9.

Div-2 was won by Chris Moore with a tidy +5. He was consistent across both halves. Runner-up was Dave Tildsley with +4. His game was most consistent with +2 on each half.

The NTP’s went to: 9 th – N Duncan, 18 th – J Betland, with John managing a ‘2’. The Pro Shop Super-pin went to Mick Prior with a shot to 2.03 metres. He did manage a ‘2’, on what proved to be the highlight of his day.The ball sweep went to +1 on count back. Check in the Pro Shop if you think you earned one.

There were no visitors, although Stephen Stokes managed to swing the clubs again instead of drive a mower.

On Sunday 26th March, the grand final of the Summer Sixes comp was played. The grand final main draw winners were ‘Golf Harvest’ team, with Cowhands finishing one point behind in Runner-up. The Plate Draw final saw ‘Still Trying’ win ahead of ‘Lost in the Trees’. Prizes for non-members can be collected from the Pro Shop, with members prizes going on account.

This Saturday, 1st April the competition is the ‘Roadies Day’ Monthly Medal, sponsored by a ‘bevy of blokes’. Then on Sunday, 2nd April there is a Stableford Medley.

Canberra Raiders Contact Coach Helps Train Magpies Under 18’s

March 24, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Magpies Under 18’s side being shown the ropes by Josh Miller.

The Forbes & Parkes Phoenix recently spoke with Forbes Magpies under 18’s Coach, Brad McMillan about how the boys are shaping up for the 2023 season.

Brad is an experienced coach, having previously worked with the under 18’s team back in the early 2000’s and again in 2020. He also had a stint coaching the Forbes Magpies first grade team in 2014, before coaching the Eugowra side in 2021.

Brad spoke about what his focus will be for the under 18’s this year. “A lot of my focus is on defense. I like to think that if you can stop tries, you can stop games, it’s 50% of the game.”

“A lot of people focus on attack, and that is an extremely important part of the game, but I think defensively that’s what we really want to nail this year,” said Brad.

Proving that it’s not what you know but who you know, Brad recruited his brother- in-law, Josh Miller to teach the under 18’s squad some great defensive techniques.

Josh Miller played in the NRL for both the Canberra Raiders and the St George Dragons, even sharing the Player of the Year award at Canberra Raiders in 2005 alongside Troy Thompson and in 2009 alongside Josh Duggan.

Josh has been signed this year as the Contact Coach for the Raiders to improve the defensive technique of the players. It was those defensive skills that Brad was wanting Josh to teach his under 18s.

They will get to test their new skillset when they play the curtain raiser in Mudgee on Saturday, 1st April ahead of the Newcastle Knights v Manly Sea Eagles game for round 5 of the NRL. Be sure to head to Mudgee for a great day of footy.

Chad Porter Launches The Spaceman Towards A Premiership

March 24, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Captain/coach, Chad Porter is building a first grade rugby league team will be a top contender in 2023.

Chad Porter has jumped straight into his first ever coaching role, accepting the position of coach for the Parkes Spaceman’s first grade side in the 2023 Group 11 competition.

In addition to his coaching role, Chad is also the team Captain. When you look at his rugby league background, it is easy to see why the club has placed their confidence in him.

Chad started playing rugby league in the under 10’s and continued through to the under 18’s where his side took out the 2011 Premiership. Chad went on to play first grade for the Parkes Spacement and helped them win the Premiership in 2018.

Chad was selected to play for the Newcastle Knights 20’s side Chad before moving across to join the Sydney Rabbitohs 20’s side.

He spent a year at Guilford before heading to play for the Mounties and helping them win a Premiership. In 2017 Chad made the decision to head home to Parkes.

The Spacemen have lost a few of their key players heading into the 2023 season, with Sam Dwyer moving to Wollongong to play football, Jordy Pope relocating for work and Jack Crieth retiring.

Despite these losses, Chad is optimistic for the season ahead, “We’re looking good, Pauly Clyburn has done well with recruitment. We’ve secured a few new front rowers, including Tongan brothers Takitau and Moni, Rex from Papua New Guinea and we’ve got Jake Dooley coming back.”

“When the Cowra team folded, we swooped in and signed ex-NRL and English Super League player Jack Buchanan,” said Chad.

Last week Parkes Spacemen beat Orange Hawks in a trial game by two tries, which is a great sign for the team who will take on Orange Hawks again when round one kicks off after Easter.

Jimmy Has The 2023 Premiership In Sight

March 17, 2023 By Roxane Manley

A familiar face is this year’s reserve grade coach for the Spacemen, Jimmy Clyburn.

After a stint coaching the under 21s last year, well known local, Jimmy Clyburn has been promoted to the ranks of reserve grade coach for the Parkes Spacemen 2023 rugby league season.

We caught up with Jimmy up at Pioneer Oval before training on Tuesday night and he was excited at the possibility of getting a few of the old boys back this season.

“We had a pretty young squad the last few years, but we’ve got a few blokes from Woodbridge Cup that are coming back to have a run this year,” said Jimmy.

Jimmy believes the team will greatly benefit from a mix of experience from the older players and the speed and fitness that the young players bring to the team.

Last year, the reserve grade team were placed in the middle of the ladder. “We were missing a few key players last year. Injury took its toll on first grade last season, so a lot of reserve grade players shot up to first grade to fill spots,” said Jimmy.

Of course, the main goal heading into the 2023 season is to win the premiership. To achieve this, Jimmy will be focusing on completions, trying to find structure and working on combinations with the new players in the team.

“The boys are a tight knit group, we’ve all been mates pretty much our whole lives,” said Jimmy.

This coming weekend, the firsts, seconds and junior Spacemen will head to Orange to play a trial game against the Orange Hawks. If you are looking for a footy fix, organise a car load and get to Orange on Saturday to support the Spacemen!

Will Wardle Back For A Second Term As Under 18’S Coach For The Spacemen

March 10, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Under 18s Coach Will Wardle showing up to training in the Red, White & Blue.

The 2023 footy season will be the second for Will Wardle as coach of the Parkes Spacemen under 18’s side.

Last year the under 18s struggled to field enough players and had to rely on some of the under 16s to step up, but Will said, “We’ve got a good squad this year.”

Will, who is a plumber by trade, moved to Parkes two years ago. He is originally from Chirlmere, west of Sydney where he played in the Group 6 League competition.

Will went on to explain how he got the coaching role, “I turned up last year, was up there having dinner with Sammy and Joey Dwyer and Tony said, we need a coach, and I said if you get stuck I’ll do it, and I got the job.”

One of the team’s main priorities in the lead up to this season has been fitness, and they have been working hard at it, so we can expect to see some fast, exciting footy being played.

The under 18’s have a trial game coming up on Saturday, 18th March in Orange against the Orange Hawks, which is sure to be a great test for the boys.

Some of last year’s under 16’s, are this year stepping up into the Under 18’s. The team also has a new half back from Condobolin and he is expected to lift the team, in addition to another great recruit from Canowindra.

“If you are interested in playing this year, simply turn-up to training on Tuesday night, we are always happy to have new players,” said Will.
