Parkes Golf Club Weekly Report

February 24, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Saturday, 18th February was the fourth round of the BWR Summer Competition which was a four Ball Aggregate stableford with an individual in conjunction and there were 70 players in the event. To win this event you needed both players to be scoring well on each hole.

The winners were Aaron Drabsch and Joseph Tanswell, hauling in a good team score of 77 points, but they had to withstand a countback with Ian Phipps and Phil Smith also hitting a combined team form to score the same points. Another team of early starters, Mick Bond and Peter Bristol knocked up 75 points. Matthew Spedding and Michael Thomas also hit a credible 74 points.

In the individual event, Ian Phipps was back to his best coming in with a 42 point score. The chasing pack was headed up by Mick Bond with a great score of 41 points, Matthew Spedding scored a good individual total of 38 points and was joined on that score by Mick Jeffress and John Pearce.

The Nearest The Pins this week were – on the Dirt Doctor 1st won by Charlie Kaehler at 180cm, Parkes Ready Mix Concrete 9th won by Cath Coates at 354cm, Harvey Norman 11th won by Aaron Drabsch at 253cm, the Westlime 15th won by Brendon Simpson at 314cm and the 18th won by Peter Bristol at 44cm. The lucrative 11th was won by treasurer Richard Hamilton at 349cm.

Ball winners were Mick Bond 41, Matthew Spedding, Mick Jeffress, John Pearce 38, Rob Rea, Michael Thomas, Phil Bishop, Jack Matthews, Bruce Symonds, Rob Hey, Brendon Simpson 36, Rob Norman, Scott Winter 35. The Captain vs President was won by the Captain Cath 173 to David’s 166.

This week will be the 18 Hole Fourball Multiplier Medley Stableford / Individual in Conjunction 5th and Final Round BWR Accountants & Advisors Summer Competition Sponsored by BWR Accountants & Advisors.

On Sunday the Pennants teams travelled to Cowra and returned with mixed success. The No1 side went down 4-1 to the strong Wellington side with only Jack Elliott getting up. In the No 2s, a side with the potential to go all the way, Luke Clarke, Blake Smith and Anthony Riach all had strong wins to lead the side to a 3/2 victory against rivals Forbes. In the No 3s Jake Thompson, Andrew Bourke, Peter Amor and Ray White all had solid wins to record a 4/1 victory against the Duntryleague team.

Parkes Bowling & Sports Club

February 24, 2023 By Roxane Manley

The Open Pennants season commenced last Sunday, 19th February with both Pirates teams playing in Parkes in grade three and grade five. A terrific and overdue initiative from Bowls NSW to allow Pennants teams to be open to male and female Bowlers this year, saw Liz Byrne, Joanne Simpson and Maureen Miller bowling with the men for the first time. Unfortunately, both teams representing Parkes Bowling & Sports Club (Pirates) were soundly defeated.

The grade five Parkes Pirates Bowlers teams were outclassed and soundly beaten on two of the three rinks, by Parkes Railway Diggers Club on Sunday at the Railway Club. The only win was a win by one shot as skipper Liz Byrne led her team to a narrow win. Congratulations and well played to the Railway team – too good on the day.

The highly fancied grade three Parkes Pirates teams were beaten by Manildra on their home green, with Manildra winning by 57 shots to 48, winning two rinks to Parkes’ one rink win. Manildra were very strong across the three teams and were deserved winners away from home – congratulations to the Manildra Bowlers.

Twenty social bowlers played two games of triples and two game of pairs on Thursday, 16th February, with all games very closely fought. There was an18 shot all draw in the triples game between George Bradley, Bob Freeman and Steve Ryan against John Niddrie, Ian Simpson and Jake Brown. This was a very tight game with the margin never more than two shots between the two teams, so a draw was a fitting result.

Mike Valentine, Chris Harrison and Rob Irving had a narrow three shot win over Al Affleck, Graeme Dixon and Paul Kirwin, winning by 22 shots to 19. Team Irving were four shots behind after the 15th end, but were able to string together a couple of winning ends, to take and hold the lead, winning by three shots.

Rob Tinker and Phil Barncred had a closely fought one shot win over John Ward and Brian Townsend, winning 18 to 17. Rob and Phil were two shots down after the penultimate end but were good enough to jag three shots on the last end to win by one shot.

Ray Jones and John Corcoran defeated John Carr and Col Hayward by 18 shots to 16 in another tight game of social pairs. Corky and Ray were able to move ahead on the scorecard to lead by two shots after the 19th end, and then were composed enough to hang on and win by tow shots.

There were no organised social bowls on Saturday as the Bowls NSW Heat policy was enacted, preventing Bowlers from playing organised Bowls in the extreme heat.

Life Saving Defibs For Local Sporting Clubs

February 17, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Fantastic news for grassroots sport which will be safer for players, spectators and volunteers as part of a $500,000 push to install life-saving defibrillators at community facilities across NSW.

Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said 191 devices will be installed thanks to the latest round of the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government’s Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program.

“With more than 8,500 people experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year in NSW, this program provides sports with early access to a defibrillator in the worst case scenario,” Mr Henskens said.

“Since the Liberal and Nationals Government introduced this program in 2017, more than 2,000 defibrillators have been installed at sports facilities across NSW.”

The grants cover the full cost of equipment under the program with several sporting organisations receiving multiple devices.

Professor Jamie Vandenberg, Co-deputy Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, said nine out of every 10 people who suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospital don’t survive.

“We want to change that statistic so it’s vital that we get as many defibrillators installed across NSW,” Mr Vandenberg said.

More information about the program is available at www.sport.nsw.gov.au/grants/
