Parkes Carnival Attracts Athletes From All Over State

March 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes athletes had a great day winning several medals in various events: Alice Williams and Ellie Tattersall; Oliver Monkerud; Khleaigha Dawson and Giselle Higgins.

The Parkes Little Athletics Club held its annual carnival recently with 130 athletes taking part from all over the state.

With about 100 different events on the day there were a lot of personal best achievements and some records broken. Gold, silver and bronze medals were handed out for each age group for boys and girls in each event.

“We always have our carnival on the second Sunday in March, and athletes use it as their last practise before the state championships in Sydney the weekend after,” said Kelli Edwards. That is why athletes come from as far as Penrith, Gosford, Temora, Cobar, Bankstown, Wyong and Hawkesbury City. There were also participants from Forbes, Dubbo, Bathurst, Cumnock, Gilgandra, Gulgong, Cowra, Canowindra, Orange, Woy Woy and Young.

“The carnival was a huge success,” said Kelli. “It is the biggest fundraiser for our club. The day ran smoothly and all the kids had fun. It would not have been possible without our amazing committee and helpers.”

The club had been very lucky to have gone through the COVID pandemic without having to cancel the annual carnival. “In 2020 we got in just before the lockdown started, and in 2021 we could run it, but with limited numbers. The only issue we had this year with COVID was that some of our families and committee members were unwell or in isolation.”
