Parkes Phoenix

SNIPPETS…

March 21, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

The exhibition to introduce the huge variety of arts and crafts in the Parkes Community organised by Quota International was a huge success last weekend. Here is Fran Dixon showing their range of quilts.

Ride For Polio: The Parkes Rotary Club is looking for cyclists to join the Ride for Polio leaving from Bushman’s Dam for Condobolin on Sunday. Rotary District 9700, that includes Parkes, is organising the bike ride around clubs in the district to raise awareness and funds. Accompanying the riders is the last remaining iron lung in Australia. The riders arrive in Parkes on Sunday for a breakfast in Cooke Park at 9:30am before a stop at Lions Park at 10:30am and Spicer Park at 11:30am. Lunch will be at Bushman’s Dam at 12:30 before stops at Woodward Park at 1:30, Keast Park at 2:30pm and Cheney Park at 3:30pm. Children and parents are encouraged to bring their bikes to one of the parks for a circuit ride. Contact Club President Jenny Jewell at Greenparkes Nursery for more information.

Relay For Life Cancelled: Cancer Council NSW and the volunteer organising committee have cancelled Parkes & Districts Relay For Life on 23 and 24 March due to low registration numbers and fundraising. Team captains have been contacted and registered participants can either transfer their registrations to the Orange and District Relay on 6th and 7th April, get a refund, or to let the money stand as a donation. “It’s bitterly disappointing that the event is not going ahead,” said Brendon Argyle, Cancer Council community relations coordinator. Raffle tickets are still for sale and will be drawn by 1st April, winners will be contacted. Parkes Christian School may still run their mini relay on Friday, 22nd April.

2019 NSW State Election: Tomorrow, 23rd March from 8am to 6pm for the 57th Parliament of NSW, including all 93 seats in the NSW Legislative Assembly and 21 of the 42 seats in the NSW Legislative Council. The following voting centres will be open tomorrow: Parkes Assemblies of God Hall in Rees Avenue; Parkes East Public School; Parkes Public School; Middleton Public School; Trundle Central School; Tullamore Central School; Peak Hill Central School; Alectown Soldiers Memorial Hall and Bogan Gate Public School. Early voting has been available in Parkes all week at the Parkes Uniting Church in Court Street and is still open today from 8am to 6pm.
