End Of Financial Year For Landlords

June 26, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

With the end of the financial year just around the corner, now is a great time to evaluate if there are any minor repairs or maintenance needed at your investment property.

This may include tasks that you have been putting off that may need doing annually. Some of these tasks include general repairs, painting, pest treatments, gutter cleaning, or annual yard maintenance.

These are things that landlords may be able to claim on tax and will also be beneficial for maintaining your property and ensuring its value in the long run.

Are you claiming depreciation on your investment property? If not, now may also be a good time to have an assessment done from a tax depreciation specialist. Depreciation is the natural wear and tear of a building and its assets over time. The Australian Tax Office allows owners of income producing properties to claim this depreciation as a tax deduction. Century 21 Central West can arrange this service on your behalf.

At Century 21 Central West, we suggest these tasks to landlords throughout the year, usually after a routine inspection of an investment property has been done. For landlords who wish to have an assessment from a tax deduction specialist, it is as simple as letting Century 21 Central West know when, so that Tara Kelly and her team can do all of the hard work for you!

If you would like to find out more on how we can manage your investment property to its full potential, please contact the Century 21 Central West team today – 02 6852 3793 or Tara Kelly 0418 465 407.

2020 Parkes Show – Cancelled

June 26, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Show will be back, better than ever in 2021.

The Parkes P A & H Association advised last week that due to the uncertainty around the rules and regulations of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Parkes Show has unfortunately been cancelled.

The show was scheduled to be held from Monday, 31 August to Wednesday, 2 September however the committee believe the cancellation is in the best interest of the community at this time.

“To all of our valued sponsors, volunteers and stewards, thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to working with you all to make our Parkes Show in 2021 even greater,” said Peter Unger, Parkes P A & H President.

There are also some major works currently taking place at the showground with the Luncheon Room & Grandstand receiving a face lift as well as the construction of a new Animal Nursery also taking place.

These works are happening with Public Works NSW through the funding that was received from the Federal Government. It would have been a race to have all these works completed by show time.

We look forward to celebrating the 140th Parkes Show in 2021 when it returns better than ever with all the new upgrades to the showground.

Vale Jim Bailey

Jim Bailey was the first runner to break the four-minute mile on American soil. He was also a one-time resident of Parkes – his father Patrick Joseph Bailey being the health inspector for Parkes Municipal Council from 1930-1940.

By age 19 he tied for first in the 880 yards at the 1949 Australian Championships with David White. In 1951 Bailey was national champion outright in 880 yards. It was his first time on the new cinders track in Melbourne which he found harsh. The French miler, Michel Clare, invited Bailey to train and compete in Europe where cinders tracks were the norm. The harsh winters were tough; Bailey returned to Australia in 1952 out of form, finishing second but missing out on the sole Olympic Games spot in 880 yards.

Injury meant Bailey missed the Vancouver Empire Games 880 yards final and the “Miracle Mile” won by UK’s Roger Bannister with Australian John Landy second. Bailey moved to USA and trained with Bill Bowerman at University of Oregon. He was invited to the blockbuster mile race in LA Memorial Coliseum where experts hoped for the first sub-four-minute mile on American soil. Bailey triumphed in an amazing race, beating the two favourites Roger Delany and Landy. Sadly, Australian media turned on Bailey for beating their “darling” Landy, and the Australian public did the same. Bailey was booed in Melbourne at the Olympic trials. Bailey and Landy were good friends.

Bailey remained in Washington state, never returning to his homeland. While the media portrayed him as a “villain”, Bellingham locals knew him as a generous man.

Bailey donated $100,000 to the Assumption Catholic School Foundation and regularly offered transport to the elderly within his community.

He died on 31st March 2020. Jim is survived by seven children from his first wife and one sister.

Telehealth The Future For Older Australians

June 26, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

There are many things that Australians over 60 would like to see return to “normal” post-COVID, but according to new research undertaken by the Global Centre for Modern Ageing (GCMA), telehealth is something many are keen to keep.

Whether accessed by phone or online, telehealth has worked well for older Australians, with more than 60 per cent of people aged over 60 surveyed nationally saying they were willing to use telehealth in the future.

“Older Australians like telehealth for its convenience, reduced travel and ability to be conducted at home,” said GCMA chief executive Julianne Parkinson.

Over two in three people who used telehealth during the pandemic said they would feel confident using telehealth in the future and 49% said they were likely to use telehealth after the pandemic.

“The experience of those who took part in digital consultations was positive,” said Julianne.

While many had a largely positive experience, some had difficulties using telehealth. Challenges included a less personal experience, less perceived warmth and less perceived care, difficulties for people with hearing impairment and tech glitches and a lack of tech confidence.

Ellie Hawkins Announced As The Joint Winner Of The Young Achiever Of The Year Award

June 26, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Young Achiever of the Year, Ellie Hawkins

The NSW Mining Industry & Suppliers Awards were held last Thursday, 18 June. The awards were due to be held earlier this year in April at NSW Parliament in Sydney, however due to the COVID-19 health pandemic, the event was cancelled. In order to still recognise and celebrate the people and companies powering the mining industry, the awards were live streamed via social media.

Ellie Hawkins, Scheduling Engineer at CMOC-Northparkes Mines (Northparkes) was announced as the joint winner of the Young Achiever of the Year award.

Ellie joined the Northparkes team in 2017 as a Graduate Mining Engineer. Within her first 12 months, she transitioned from being a Graduate Mining Engineer to a Drill and Blast Engineer with a concurrent role as Project Team Leader for the Wireless Detonation Trial.

In mid-2019, Ellie was promoted to Scheduling Engineer. Whilst working full time at Northparkes, Ellie is also completing a Master of Research at the University of Wollongong on the blast optimisation of the drill and blast practices of the E26 Sub Level Cave at Northparkes.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have received this award. At 26 years of age and only 4 years into my mining career, I know I’ve picked the right industry. The way we have held strong in the face of adversity in 2020 sings true to the great industry we are,” said Ellie. “Achieving this award would not be possible without my family at Northparkes. We are a tight knit community and the support received, with individual drives means that opportunities are boundless.”

Northparkes Managing Director Hubert Lehman said, “Congratulations Ellie on this fantastic achievement. We are extremely proud to have you on our team at Northparkes. We can’t wait to see what you achieve next!”

Ellie added, “Thank you to the NSW Minerals Council for hosting these awards and for your continued support in promoting our industry and thank you to Evolution Mining for sponsoring this award. I would also like to acknowledge all the other finalists – I feel privileged to be recognised amongst individuals who have made such significant contributions to our industry.”

Landmark Event For Parkes Tennis

June 19, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

GREAT TO BE BACK… Jake Magill from Parkes playing a match at the very first tennis competition to be back since the COVID-19 lockdown earlier this year.

Parkes Tennis Club staged the very first regional sporting event last weekend since the NSW Government shut down all sporting codes due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) event targeted a niche market of players who met the standard criteria. The players involved have an Australian ranking, are involved in the college recruitment system, or want consistent level based matches.

Players travelled from Tamworth, Gunnedah, Canberra, Penrith, Lithgow, Eglinton and Dubbo, while seven players from Parkes took part: Jake Magill, Ben Evans, Andrew Slattery, Joseph Tanswell, Gabe Goodrick, Abbey Kennedy and Maddy McCormick.

All players were guaranteed 4 or 5 best of 3 set level based matches. Parkes is part of a six-event series with Paramount Club at Dubbo. The next event is in Dubbo on 28th and 28th June while the remaining two Parkes events are on 11th and 12th July and 8th and 9th August.

UTR is a global system that rates every tennis player regardless of age, gender, or nationality on a 16-point scale. It’s an objective, results driven rating driven by the strength of your opponent, the amount of games you win and playing 30 matches within one year to show consistency.

As an example, right now Novak Djokovic is 16.18, Alex DeMinaur is 15.73, Ash Barty is 13.36, Jake Magill is 10.18, Ben Evans is 8.16 and Abbey Kennedy is 5.40.

Parkes Tennis run all of their competitions through the UTR systems and competitions organiser Helen Magill is encouraging all players in junior and senior competitions to download the app and sign up and make their profile at www.myutr.com.

TennisNSW will be staging a UTR super series for juniors throughout the Central West starting early July. More information will be provided on the Parkes Tennis Facebook page as it comes to hand.

Small School Big Opportunities

June 19, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

parkes christian school

Parkes Christian School (PCS) has all the benefits of a small school while still providing all the opportunities of bigger institutions.

The staff at PCS pride themselves on getting to know every student individually, so they can understand their goals and help achieve them. School Principal Glen Westcott, said that for staff to be able to achieve this, it was vital that PCS retains its small-school culture. “We have double-streamed our Year 7 group this year to allow us to retain our small class sizes despite the year group growing.”

“Smaller class sizes allows us to work with the students more closely, and really understand their learning needs.” Our students are also involved in all the same extra-currirular activities as other schools.

PCS is enrolling now for 2021 with limited spaces available in Kindergarten and Year 7. If you would like to book a tour of the school, call 6862 4164.

More Support For Farmers

June 19, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

New measures to improve the Farm Household Allowance (FHA) program will make it easier to access. “We know the drought is continuing to bite despite welcome recent rainfalls in some parts of the Riverina and Central West,” said Riverina MP and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack.

Changes to the FHA over the past year include simplifying the assets test to a single threshold of $5.5 million, no differentiation between farm and non-farm assets, and anyone under the limit will be paid the full rate automatically.

Rural financial counsellors and farm consultants have also now been added to the list of professionals able to complete Farm Financial Assessments.

The amount of funding through the Activity Supplement has been doubled to $10,000 for farmers and their partners to seek independent expert advice or gain new qualifications or skills. “The financial strain from this drought for farmers and indeed regional communities as a whole will continue well after this drought breaks,” Michael said.

“Our farmers produce the very best food and fibre in the world and the Federal Government is standing with them to ensure they come out the other side of this drought as best as they possibly can.”

Army of Volunteers

June 19, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

If you’ve had enough of sitting at home, the Salvos Stores in Parkes and Forbes would love to welcome you as a volunteer. While the donations did not dry up during the COVID-19 isolation period as many people were cleaning out their homes, the Salvos Stores are in need of more volunteers.

Corpse Officer Sandra Walmsley said anyone is welcome to call into one of the shops and offer their services. She cautioned though that people over 70 years would have to wait until all the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

What is your message to the public during these turbulent times?

June 19, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Chief Inspector David Cooper, Central West Police District

Chief Inspector David Cooper, Central West Police District: This year has certainly been one of challenges – as we all battled our way through a devastating drought and then the catastrophic bushfires – we thought things were finally starting to look up. Then COVID-19 hit and life has not been the same since. What these things have really shown is that our communities are adaptive, strong and resilient. What was considered “normal” in our day-to-day lives may never be the same again, but we have all managed to adapt and change the way we do things.

Internationally the “Black Lives Matter” movement has come to the fore and has brought with it many conversations. The actions of some police from overseas, as portrayed in the media, appear abhorrent. What I can say is that the police in Parkes support our community because they are part of the community. Our police and community relations are strong and have been built over many years. Police rely on the community for their support just as much as the community relies on police to maintain law and order. I look forward to continue working with the community as we move forward and face the challenges together.
