Editor’s Note

December 17, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

It really felt like 2021 was trying its best to beat 2020 for the worst year trophy. Little did we know the super cell storm event on the second day of 2021 was an indication of what was to come.

It was a trying year for many, especially for Year 12 students, health care workers, business owners, farmers, and everyone who faced personal challenges and experienced loss.

At least the sun cracked open those dark clouds and we still found lots to celebrate as life went on, albeit not always as planned.

As the sun shone on us, so did our indomitable community spirit that kept on sparkling when we needed it most.

How can we forget the long queue of cars lining up all the way from Northparkes Oval to the highway the first day of the pop-up vaccination clinic, or the overwhelming support recently for the opening of the Safe Haven for people experiencing suicidal thoughts or distress.

There are so many heart-warming, inspiring and precious stories in our community and it was a privilege to bring them to you our readers this year.

Thank you to everyone who sent in contributions, and a huge thank you to our advertisers who ensured we remained in print every week.

We are very excited to end the year with a bumper 16-page edition packed with festive stories. Thank you Roxane for your mammoth effort to make this happen!

Wishing you all a peaceful festive season and a wonderful 2022!

Parkes Shire On Disaster Support List: Residents, farmers and businesses in the Parkes Shire will be able to access disaster assistance to help recover from recent severe weather events. Parkes has been added to the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) along with Cowra, Forbes, Weddin and Lockhart. The disaster assistance will help the councils cover the costs associated with the operational response and repairing damaged essential public assets. Local residents will also receive support to get back on their feet, including grants to replace essential household contents or repair structural damage to homes. For information on personal hardship and distress assistance, contact Service NSW on 13 77 88. To apply for a concessional loan or grant, contact the NSW Rural Assistance Authority on 1800 678 593 or visit www.raa.nsw.gov.au

Christmas Kindness:

Elders Parkes and Forbes have teamed up with The Salvation Army for a Christmas Toy Drive. The Salvation Army will ensure that gifts are delivered to all children this Christmas. Gifts can be placed under the trees at the two offices with a label to either boy or girl and an approximate age. Call 6862 922 for more information.

Parkes Uniting Church and Parkes Catholic Church are collecting/accepting Christmas gifts and donations to be handed to those in need.

Big W in Parkes has a donation tree at the front of the shop for gifts.

Coles has a $2 donation you can make through Redkite to help support children with cancer and their families, and to SecondBite to provide meals for Australians who need it most. Purchase in store or online.

Woolworths Parkes is part of a donation target to raise the equivalent of seven million meals this Christmas in support of OzHarvest. Purchase a 50c token in store or online, or choose to round up your purchase to the nearest dollar.

DIY December: With the school holidays upon us, parents are having to come up with new ideas to keep the kids entertained outside of turning the box on! Many families may have already exhausted their go to activities through lockdown and are in much need of new and innovative ideas. The Family Project is encouraging families to put down their phone or tablet and opt for a DIY December, spending some time with their loved ones making Christmas cards, decorations, advent calendars and gifts this Christmas. For some great ideas visit www.familyproject.org.au

Christmas Closure: The last edition of the Parkes Phoenix for 2021 will be next Friday, 17th December. The first edition of the new year will be Friday, 21st January, 2022.

Having watched the first ever performance at the new Cooke Park Pavilion, what do you think of this venue?

December 10, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Dawn Brownlow: I came from Bathurst to see my grandkids perform and I thought it was just spectacular. It is such a bonus for Parkes and it’s beautiful. The sound was great, even better than in a hall. I would love to come and see other shows here too, in summer!

Virginia Rice: It was a real privilege for Parkes School of Dance to give the first performance at this facility that is a real asset for our community. We are very happy with the way it has gone today and we will definitely like to use it again.

Joanna McCabe and Kate Harris: It is really good and a great venue. They’ve done a terrific job with it and worked really well for a dance show. The sound was also good.

A Sunny Day To Dance Outside!

December 10, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

TAKE A BOW… Parkes School of Dance students at the end of their acro dance performance for the Performance at the Pavilion concert on Sunday.

Parkes School of Dance students literally danced with joy on Sunday having the privilege of being the very first performers to inaugurate the brand-new Cooke Park Pavilion.

The school’s annual end-of-year concert showcased different dance types from classical ballet, tap dance and jazz to contemporary, lyrical and acro with more than 70 dancers presenting a program of 15 different items.

“We were pretty privileged and it was wonderful that we could share our love of dance in the open air,” said Natalie Williams.

As the sound travels well outside, they acquired more spectators on Sunday and during rehearsals from people in the park and bystanders.

Being the guinea pigs testing out the new venue, Natalie said everything went pretty seamless. “Not having to hire someone to do the lights was huge for us, and backstage we could iron costumes and do everything we needed.”

It was a great way to end a tumultuous year of COVID interruptions, the sad loss of teacher Cathy Acret in March to cancer, the return to online learning in term 3, and having to film students for their Royal Academy of Dance exams.

“We are so proud of the students showing so much resilience, determination and grit to get through this year,” said Natalie.

“The students were thrilled to be back on stage, and for many it was their first time with 20 pre-schoolers also performing.” Despite the extra level of organisation required to ensure a COVID-safe event, “it all came together in the end on a sunny day!”

Letter to the Editor

December 10, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Dear Editor,

I write on behalf of the Parkes Prostate Cancer Awareness and Support Group to thank the community for enabling our work this year.

With many men and families in the local area impacted by prostate cancer, we assist newly diagnosed men and long-term survivors by providing friendship and support.

We also proudly promote PCFA Specialist Nurses and their new telenursing service, which offers information and expert advice to those affected in our local area.

Over the past 25 years we’ve successfully boosted survival rates from 73% to 95%, and we couldn’t have done it without your donations and support.

Over the Christmas period, please consider making a donation to PCFA for men and families facing prostate cancer.

To talk to a PCFA Specialist Nurse or join a support group, call 1800 22 00 99 or go to www.pcfa.org.au.

Our best wishes to you and your loved ones for a healthy, safe, and happy festive season.

Students Did A Great Job As Library Ambassadors!

December 10, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Back: Emma Brown, Cr Pat Smith and Debbie Gould; Middle: John-Tian Waters (Parkes East Public School), Toby Fliedner (Middleton Public School), Knox Lamont (Parkes Christian School) and Adrian Day (Holy Family School); Front: Grace McGirr (Middleton Public School), Adelaide Terry (Holy Family School), Evelyn Greef
(Parkes Public School), Anna Orr (Parkes Public School) and Molly Clohessy (Parkes Christian School).

Despite all the interruptions and stoppages of many activities due to COVID, the Year 5 ambassadors did a wonderful job this year keeping their respective schools up to date with happenings at the Parkes Shire Library.

Representing all five primary schools, the nine students each received a certificate and a small gift last week as a thank you. In her final official duty as Councillor, it was fitting for Pat Smith to hand over the certificates as she welcomed them to the program at the start of the year.

Debbie Gould and Emma Brown of the Parkes Shire Library also thanked the schools, teachers and parents for their support.

Looking For Mr Perfect

If you want to do something for your community in 2022, you might be the right person Mr Perfect is looking for.

The grassroots charity brings men together at BBQs in local parks to create community and connection, and also provides online support, information and resources for the good of men’s health.

Mr Perfect wants to support the men of Parkes and is looking for a BBQ host. This role will be the ‘conduit for connection’, and the main tasks would involve the following: find a good public BBQ spot locally; be available for two hours per month for the BBQ (usually Sunday mornings); buy food/drink/equipment; cook the food with a co-host; introduce/chat to the attendees and sometimes provide an activity (footy, cricket set etc if people want to do that).

Mr Perfect will reimburse all costs for food and equipment and send the host a pack of merchandise, a banner, provide a detailed BBQ Host Guide, and money to advertise the BBQ online. The host will do an hour or so local groundwork each month putting up flyers, posters, and talking to local people.

If you are interested or would like to know more, send an email to hello@mrperfect.org.au.

Our Bloke – Eric Lensson

Eric Lensson

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I’ve been here over ten years. I just love the Parkes climate, people and country atmosphere.

What is your favourite thing about your working life? I feel very fortunate in finding employment in my favourite areas of science and technology. Working for CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science is the best job I’ve ever had, challenging yet personally engaging and rewarding.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Here in Parkes is good, on 11 acres close to town and the airport, the Parkes Aero Club and Aviation Museum, with excellent Rex connection to Sydney and the world…including my arctic hometown.

What makes you laugh the most? The reactions I get when I translate Aussie jokes to ’foreigners’.

If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? Skydiving … I love motorcycles, aerobatics, and Michelle and I scored a hot air balloon ride at 50th anniversary of ‘The Dish’ (Murriyang) Open Day. But yeah, skydiving for a day should not tempt fate too much.

If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to and why? I would avoid going back in time, that could lead to problems. But if I could quickly duck forward in time to peep at next week’s Lotto results that would be awesome!

If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce? Free Tim Tams!

What is one thing you will never do again? ‘Never say never’…climb the summit of Cradle Mountain.

Do you believe in random acts of kindness and which is your favourite one? When you reach the checkout with one or two items and the stranger in front with a full supermarket trolley says ’you go first’, but of course you incur a future debt… to return the favour to someone else.
