July 16, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Aunty Francis pictured in the centre, at the Day 1 clap stick workshop.

Lifestyle Solutions in Parkes proudly celebrated NAIDOC by hosting a series of engaging cultural workshops after securing a grant from AANSW. The workshops held over four days, brought together children, families, carers, elders and the wider community to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Day 1

A clap stick workshop held with the KJ’s Miilu’s Kyah Turnbull and Jake Smith, where participants sanded back and designed their very own clap sticks. The Parkes Rotary Club then treated everyone to a delicious sausage sizzle lunch afterwards.

Day 2

Ngaanha Arts Katlyn Turnbull hosted an incredible canvas art workshop. Every chair was filled, as the participants showed off their artistic talents! Followed by a warm, hearty lunch from the slow cookers, including chicken and vegetable soup, kangaroo curry with rice, and creamy tomato and basil soup. It was great to see a few adventurous people step outside their comfort zones and give the roo curry a try!

Day 3

LSS set up a stall at the Nations of Origin community event held by PCYC, where LSS partnered with Crumb & Frost by Carly. The design your own NAIDOC cookie activity was a huge hit with the kids! It was wonderful to see so many creative designs and smiling faces.

Day 4

Featured a fantastic traditional fishing net weaving workshop with Alisha Lonsdale from Arts Out West. Alisha shared the history of how Aboriginal people traditionally used bark fibres, twisting and weaving them into strong fishing nets, before guiding everyone through creating their very own big community net. It was a hands-on cultural experience that sparked great conversations and appreciation for the knowledge and skills passed down through generations.

Celebrating 100 Years Of Marist Education In Forbes

July 9, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Pictured at RBCC to kick off the 100 Year Celebrations is current Principal Stephen Dwyer and past Marist Brothers and Sister of Mercy of RBCC.

Around 130 Marist dignitaries, ex-teachers, ex-students and current families attended a special mass and luncheon at Red Bend Catholic College on Sunday 5 July to help celebrate 100 years of Marist Education in Forbes. The date, 5 July being significant as that was the date the school originally opened in Johnson Street in 1926.

Stephen Dwyer has been Principal at the College since 2019 and is the first Principal to not be a Marist Brother. Referred to as a lay Principal, Stephen has worked at the College from 1992 in various roles with the exception of one year where he worked at a school in Alice Springs as Assistant Principal.

Red Bend Catholic College Principle Stephen Dwyer said, “Sunday’s celebration was a deeply moving and joyful occasion for the Red Bend Catholic College community.

“As we gathered to mark 100 years of Marist education in Forbes, we honoured the vision, faith and sacrifice of those who came before us, celebrated the strength and spirit of our College today, and looked to the future with great hope.

“It was a wonderful reminder that Red Bend is more than a school; more than excellence in education; it is a community of faith, family spirit and belonging that has shaped generations of young people across central and western NSW.” A Gala Dinner will be held at Forbes Town Hall on 15 August to further celebrate the 100 Year milestone. Be Seen @ Parkes Public School

July 9, 2026 By Roxane Manley

As part of their NAIDOC Week celebrations, Parkes Public School were fortunate to welcome Cheryl Thomas to demonstrate the traditional process of making Johnny cakes.

Each class had the opportunity to learn about how Johnny cakes are made before enjoying a taste with their choice of golden syrup, jam or butter. The students were highly engaged throughout the session.

Some of the K–2 students returned to the Wiradjuri Garden during playtime to continue their conversations with Cheryl and learn even more. A huge thank you to Cheryl for generously sharing her knowledge, time and culture.

Henry Smashes The Competition And Earns State Selection

July 9, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Henry pictured with Stanley Chung who he beat 3-0 in the final. The trophy Henry won was first won back in 1967, and features many names of people Henry looks up to.

Parkes Squash star Henry Kross recently competed at the NSWCHS Squash Championships. NSWCHS Squash is open to all public school students in NSW. It involves playing as a team for your region, before you split into either Opens or Under 15’s for an individual championship. The top 5 finishers in each division make the NSW team.

As a team Henry played for Western, where Western claimed a Silver medal. In the individual championship, it was his first year up in Open’s and Henry has taken out the win in that division.

“I have played under 15’s for the last four years (year 7 – 10) and managed to win three out of four in that competition. All four World Juniors were meant to compete, but one pulled out the week prior, so the competition is really strong,” said Henry.

Henry will now compete as part of the State team later in the year. “This will be my first year competing in Opens, after playing Under 15’s for NSW from year 7-10. Last year I competed in Cairns at the NSW CHS and was lucky enough to make the Australian All Schools, which I hope to do again this year in Opens.”

“I’ve been working really hard as I have State Champs in Bega this coming weekend, and fly out to World’s in Canada next week and so far my preparation has been really good. I want to make a career out of Squash, so training to keep getting to the next level motivates me,” said Henry.

Henry thanks Parkes High for their support and sponsors Dunlop and Grip X, Parkes Athletic and Parkes Squash, and everyone who has helped with his fundraising, it all counts and makes it possible.
