Local Students Attend Parliament Of NSW’s Regional Roadshow

June 25, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Pictured at the Cowra Civic Centre are the 60 plus students and members of Parliament who attended the Parliament of NSW Regional Roadshow Forum.

The Parliament of NSW Regional Roadshow was in Cowra on Wednesday, 17 June, bringing together students from across the region to engage with the democratic process.

Now in their third year, the Regional Roadshows are an initiative of the NSW Legislative Council designed to give young people meaningful opportunities to engage with the democratic process, share their perspectives and connect directly with Members of Parliament.

Regional centres host Roadshows throughout the year, with years 10 to 12 students travelling from surrounding areas to participate in a Public Speaking Competition and Youth Forum.

Over 60 student leaders from across the Central West, the Riverina and the wider region participated in the forum. The event allowed student leaders to speak directly to Members of Parliament and other senior figures on issues that matter to them such as: cost of living and financial stress, employment opportunities and future pathways, cost and accessibility of university or TAFE, housing affordability, mental health and wellbeing.

The Youth Forums gave young people the opportunity to discuss issues of importance to them, exchange ideas and contribute to conversations about their communities and their future, while the Public Speaking Competition provided students with a platform to showcase their communication skills and confidence.

Winners from each Public Speaking Competition round will be invited to compete in the State Final, to be held in the Legislative Chamber at Parliament House in December.

The Environmental Defenders Office To Visit Parkes

June 25, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Special Counsel Belinda Rayment will be representing the Environmental Defenders Office at the event.

The NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Energy-from-Waste is still ongoing, and another public hearing has been scheduled. The Inquiry continues to examine a range of issues associated with Energy-from-Waste in NSW, including environmental regulation, planning frameworks, community consultation, and the potential impacts on local communities and industries such as agriculture.

The Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) will be in Parkes on Wednesday, 1 July at the Parkes Services Club to provide information and guidance regarding the proposed Parkes Energy Recovery Project.

The Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) is Australia’s leading public interest environmental law organisation and the largest environmental legal centre in the Australia-Pacific region.

The EDO is taking the time to visit Parkes to provide the community with independent information about the planning and assessment process for the proposed Parkes Energy Recovery Project. The purpose of the information night is to help residents better understand their rights and opportunities to participate in the assessment process once the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is released.

Topics to be covered at the information evening will include:

• Understanding the process once the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) goes on public exhibition

• How to write effective submissions in response to the EIS

• Opportunities for community involvement and how to have your say throughout the assessment process.

There is no need to register in advance, community members are simply encouraged to attend. With the EIS expected to be a substantial and complex document, this information night will help equip the community with the knowledge and confidence to have their voices heard when the public exhibition period begins. The session is an opportunity to hear independent information about the planning process, understand what happens when the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) goes on public exhibition, learn how to prepare an effective submission, and ask questions about how to participate in the assessment process.

Letter To The Editor

June 25, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Congratulations to Forbes Fire Station’s newest recruits.

I would like to acknowledge and congratulate three of our local residents—Jake Hemming, Duncan Fox, and Stuart Cuskelly—on the successful completion of their training as On-Call Firefighters with Fire and Rescue NSW.

Forbes Fire Station has a proud and longstanding history within our community, having been established in the late 1800s and operating from our current station since 1929. Over that time, generations of firefighters have served the town with dedication and professionalism.

Recent recruitment has been necessary following the retirement of several longserving members of Forbes Station 294.

We have been fortunate that Forbes continues to attract strong local interest from individuals wanting to give back to their community, ensuring the ongoing strength of our brigade.

The newly qualified firefighters will now join the operational members of 294, where they will continue to develop their skills and experience in a real-world response environment. We are also pleased to note that two additional recruits are nearing completion of their training and will soon join their three teammates as part of the Forbes Fire and Rescue NSW family.

Fire and Rescue NSW is widely known for its firefighting role; however, our crews are also highly trained to respond to a wide range of incidents including hazardous materials (HAZMAT), rescues, and other emergencies. This training ensures our community is well protected across many different situations.

We congratulate our new firefighters and thank them—and all members of Forbes Station 294—for their continued commitment to serving our community.

Yours sincerely,Fire and Rescue NSWCaptain Mark WillisFire and Rescue NSW, Forbes 294

New Investment To Deliver Exciting Opportunities For Young People In Parkes Shire

June 25, 2026 By Roxane Manley

(L-R) Parkes Shire Council’s Director Planning & Community Services Annalise Teale, and Deputy Mayor Marg Applbee. Representing Evolution Mining – Northparkes Operations were Processing Manager Mitch Garside, and Communications and Engagement Superintendent Brooke Plunkett.

A significant new investment in the future of young people across the Parkes Shire has been announced, with Evolution Mining Northparkes Operations and Parkes Shire Council partnering to deliver a new Youth Officer position.

The new part-time position, established for an initial three-year term, represents a major commitment to strengthening youth engagement, participation, wellbeing and opportunities across the entire Parkes Shire.

Funded by Northparkes Operations and managed by Parkes Shire Council, the role has been designed to provide a coordinated and flexible approach to supporting young people, responding directly to community feedback that identified youth activities and mental health as key priorities.

The Youth Officer will work closely with young people, schools, community organisations, sporting clubs, and service providers to create meaningful opportunities for youth engagement, leadership development and social connection.

Parkes Shire Deputy Mayor Marg Applebee said the new position will play an important role in ensuring young people have a stronger voice in shaping the future of their communities.

The role will support youth-focused programs and events, coordinate activities through Council facilities and community venues, establish partnerships across the region and deliver outreach initiatives to smaller communities throughout the Shire.

Importantly, the position has been designed with flexibility in mind, recognising that effective youth engagement often occurs outside traditional business hours.

Council is now preparing to advertise the position and is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative and community-minded individual who can help make the role truly exceptional.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to help guide the program from the ground up, develop strong community partnerships and create lasting outcomes that support young people across the Parkes Shire.

No Junior Touch Footy In Parkes

June 25, 2026 By Roxane Manley

Pictured are some of the representative players from Parkes Junior Touch Football. If a junior competition is to go ahead this year, it is essential that the Parkes Touch Association committee is filled.

The Parkes Touch Association is putting a call out for committee members, with many significant roles yet to be filled. If the key positions needed are not filled then there will be no Mini Touch, Junior Touch, Senior Men’s and Women’s Touch or Junior Representative Touch this year, which would be a devastating outcome for junior touch footy in Parkes. At present, the only competition secured is the Seniors Mixed Touch.

Renae Smith of Parkes Touch Association said, “Competition starts in October each year, finishing in early March. Last year, we had increased numbers in participation across all junior age groups, with approximately 650 junior players and 300 senior players.

“Representative touch football tournaments commence in November and run through until Junior State Cup in February.

Last year, we had the Under 10 girls team finish runners up at the Junior State Cup.

“Player numbers are not the issue we are facing – it is the lack of volunteers. The number of volunteers has been slowly declining over recent years, which has meant that other people have had to take on more roles and greater workloads. Unfortunately, this has resulted in Committee members burning out.”

To run the competition to its full potential and reduce the workload on individual committee members, ideally, 12 people are needed.

Anyone can put their hand up to join the committee. The club has fallen low in terms of volunteers and committee members in the past, however this is the lowest number the club has seen thus far.

For more information, or to join the Committee, email parkespumas@gmail.com. or reach out via their Facebook page. The club will be holding their next meeting at 6.00pm on Monday 20 July at the Parkes Services Club Boardroom (upstairs).
