Parkes High School’s New Edible Garden Helps Students Grow

December 12, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Parkes High School students building the herb gardens.

Gardening has been unofficially added to the curriculum at Parkes High School’s special education unit, where three new herb gardens mark the beginning of a 12-month edible garden project.

Students are working with the Bunnings store in Forbes to build the edible garden, which will include six raised garden beds for herbs and bush tucker, plus a mini orchard containing six different fruit trees.

Bunnings is donating the materials, plants, potting mix and the time of its team members to build the garden at the school.

The store is also donating a cantilever umbrella to provide shelter in the garden and native plants and paint to refresh the school’s yarning circle.

The first three herb gardens were built in late November, with five students rolling up their sleeves to help.

“Some of these boys had never assisted in the garden before, they’d normally rather be inside gaming,” said Bunnings Forbes Activity Organiser George Barnes.

“But they jumped at the opportunity to get their hands dirty and get involved in building the herb gardens.

“Seeing kids who don’t get outside very often get so much joy from this project is so rewarding.”

Mr Barnes said the partnership with Parkes High School, one of 120 community organisations Bunnings Forbes supports, started before Covid. Other projects it has supported at the school includes building a pride garden in June this year.

Parkes High School special education teacher Hugh Wood approached Mr Barnes about doing another garden this year and the pair decided on the edible garden. The edible garden will continue to take shape over much of the 2025 school year.

Quorn Park Hybrid Farm – Project Update

December 12, 2024 By Roxane Manley

The Quorn Park Hybrid Project consists of the construction and operation of a solar farm consisting of photovoltaic (PV) modules, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and related civil and electrical infrastructure. The Project is located approximately ten kilometres northwest of Parkes.

The construction of the Quorn Park Hybrid Farm has an investment value of over $190 million. The estimated construction timeframe for the plant is expected to be approximately 18 months, while the farm’s operational life is approximately 35 years.

Pre-construction site studies and preconstruction works occurred in late 2024, and the construction phase of the project will commence in coming weeks.

The relevant Development Approvals for the Quorn Park Hybrid Project have been obtained from the Parkes Shire Council.

The planning approvals set out conditions for the project, including management plans. Management systems will be in place to ensure compliance with all conditions covering construction, operation, decommissioning, and administrative matters.

Enel Green Power Australia (EGPA) will manage the construction works for the project. EGPA has appointed Beon Energy Solutions as the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor for construction.

EGPA is also committed to local sourcing throughout the project’s operational and construction phases, where feasible. It is expected that the project will create significant local employment and supply opportunities during construction.

EGPA will work closely with the main contractors to identify capability and capacity in the local area. The specifics of these roles will be made publicly available in early 2025 by recruitment agency Chandler MacLeod.

Overdue Recognition For Local Firemen

December 5, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Former firefighter Don Jewell (right) recounted to Orange MP, Phil Donato the events of the 1983 Mobil Depot fuel fire he and his fellow firefighters extinguished.

State Member for Orange Philip Donato MP hosted an award ceremony at the Cooke Park Pavilion in Parkes on Tuesday 3rd December 2024, to recognise 10 brave local firemen for placing their lives in peril to save their town from a catastrophic fire in 1983.

“It is a true honour and a privilege to personally recognise ten local heroes, who pulled off an almost impossible feat and saved their town from certain catastrophe,” said Mr Donato.

Before a gathering of invited guests and dignitaries, Mr Donato personally presented to each of the five living firefighters, and families of the five deceased firefighters, Statements of Appreciation signed and issued by Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell AFSM.

“On the 23 rd of May 1983, a rail tanker carriage loaded with 33,000 litres of petrol, which was being decanted into storage tanks at the Mobil fuel depot in East Street Parkes, ignited.

“Ten members of the Parkes Fire Brigade rapidly responded to the fire, finding the fuel-laden rail tanker completely engulfed in flames which threatened to ignite adjacent fuel tanks that held millions of litres of fuel,” Mr Donato said.

The ten brave firefighters: Captain Gordon Northey, now deceased; Engine keeper Rodney Bradley, now deceased; Firefighter Robert Tinker; Firefighter Graham Dixon; Firefighter Roger Larsen; Firefighter Graham Thompson; Firefighter Robert McDonald, now deceased; Firefighter Don Jewell; Firefighter Bruce Shanks, now deceased; and Firefighter John Ashcroft, now deceased.

“The fire and potential explosion threatened not only the lives of the responding firefighters, who fought to control and extinguish the fire, but also the lives of Parkes residents. The firefighters placed their own lives at risk to fight this fire, each believing they would not survive it.

“It was a miracle that the tanker and adjacent fuel depot did not explode; These courageous men put their own lives on the line to save peoples’ lives and property, and they managed to succeed in defeating the fire and averting explosive disaster.

“It is regrettable that it has taken over forty years for these brave firefighters to be appropriately recognised. “It is regrettable that those courageous firefighters who are now deceased were not recognised during their lifetime, and although this late recognition provides them no solace, perhaps it does, for their families, fellow fire fighters and the community.

“On behalf of the Parkes community, I extend enduring gratitude to these men, and their families, not only for their bravery and courageous actions which saved the town, but also for the many years of dedicated service to the community,” Mr Donato said.

A rock monument bearing a plaque was installed at Parkes’ new fire station to recognise the dedication of the firefighters who extinguished the 1983 Mobil Depot fuel fire.

December 5, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Parkes Pharmacist Lochie Pettiford has been recognised for his dedication to mentoring pharmacy students in rural and regional areas.

The managing partner of Parkes Pharmacy has been awarded the inaugural Rural Pharmacy Preceptor Award by the School of Pharmacy at the University of Sydney.

Lochie was nominated for his outstanding clinical placement support and supervision. In 2024, university preceptors supported more than 1,200 students to complete 1,789 clinical placements.

“It was very surprising to be recognised but it’s great to know the students who came here to Parkes, enjoyed their time,” Managing partner and Pharmacist in Charge of Parkes Pharmacy, Lochie Pettiford said.

Fellow Life Pharmacy Group (LPG) Pharmacists Chris Young (Canberra) and Josh Lee (Armidale) were also finalists along with Rob Smith (Canberra) from Men’s Health Downunder.

The University of Sydney Pharmacy School launched the student nominated Pharmacy Preceptor Awards this year, allowing students from across all degree programs to nominate pharmacy preceptors who’ve made an impact on their clinical learning or development as a future health professional.

Preceptor awards were presented in five categories including community pharmacy preceptor, hospital pharmacy preceptor, rural/regional pharmacy preceptor and the Dean’s Choice Award.

“These awards help students understand who offers good pharmacy placements and hopefully that encourages others to come out to the Central West and experience life here,” Lochie Pettiford said.

“To have four pharmacists in LPG nominated shows we provide a good placement experience, no matter where you are. This really highlights just how hands-on the experience can be for students in regional areas. We engage with our patients well, we put them first and we show that through our values, missions and goals.”

Third year Bachelor of Pharmacy student, Sonja, completed her placement in Parkes and said she left the placement feeling as though the country was home.

Have A Happy And Safe Christmas, From The Kerin Health Team.

December 5, 2024 By Roxane Manley

“Shoes on kids!” He’d yell as we all grabbed a Zooper Dooper and piled in the car to drive to town.

It was a Christmas tradition.

A summer night spent staying up past our bedtime to walk around town and see the Christmas lights. We knew the streets that pulled out all the stops, and we’d walk up and down, gazing at the twinkling lights, smiling Santas on a sleigh on rooftops and the smell of cinnamon in the air.

Dad loved it just as much as we did. An evening stroll, chats with people out the front of their houses and no doubt a strategy to wear out his three kids ready for bedtime. We’d run ahead, excitedly finding the next light show, zigzagging our way through our little town.

Legs moving, faces red from the exercise, hearts full with the thrill of Christmas.

What are your Christmas traditions? See if you can swap out screen time for family connection, balance indulgent eating and drinking with active fun, and create joyful memories together this Christmas season. From an evening walk to backyard cricket, it’s the perfect time to embrace movement and connection.

We hope you have a happy and safe Christmas, from the Kerin Health Team.

Landcare Australia On The Search For Soil Heroes

December 5, 2024 By Roxane Manley

A $20,000 prize is up for grabs for Australian Soil Health Experts.

Landcare Australia has opened nominations for the 2025 General Jeffery Soil Health Award.

Back for the third successive round, the prestigious General Jeffery Soil Health Award recognises the work of people who care for soil health and who are educating or inspiring others.

Previous award winners and notable figures in the world of soil health and science, Dr Oliver Knox and Emerita Professor Dr Lynnette Abbot have confirmed they will be part of the specialist advisory panel to select the winner of the 2025 General Jeffery Soil Health Award.

The 2022 winner, leading soil health champion, educator and researcher, of ‘Soil your Undies’ fame, Dr Oliver Knox said “We all have a responsibility to our soils and our soil health and the more we all do, the more likely we are to see a fantastic future for Australia’s soils.”

The two previous award winners have teamed up to encourage nominations for the influential General Jeffrey Soil Health Award.

When asked what he was hoping to see from the next round of nominations, Dr Knox said “Passion, drive and impact. Soil is full of surprises, so I’m hoping to learn from all of the nominations and expect to feel disappointed there can be only one winner. It’s exciting and all that is needed now is for some nominations, so that are you waiting for? Nominate your soil’s guru.”

Leading soil scientist Emerita Professor Lynette Abbott and winner of the inaugural prize in 2020, is encouraging soil science experts across Australia to nominate colleagues for the prestigious national award.

“It is a very valuable process for highlighting the contributions that others are making to soil health in their various ways.

There are many approaches.”

Caravan Industry Calls For Safety First This Christmas

December 5, 2024 By Roxane Manley

The Caravan Industry Association of Australia is calling on everyone to keep safety top of mind this summer, whether you’re planning your trip, heading out on the road, or enjoying our beautiful countryside at your favourite camping spot.

As we approach the major holiday period of the year, Caravan Industry Association of Australia is encouraging caravaners this holiday to focus is focusing on Pre-Planning: Emphasising the importance of vehicle servicing and safe towing practices. Road Safety: Highlighting measures for staying safe while travelling on the roads, and taking regular breaks. Water Safety: Promoting awareness around staying safe in and around water. Caravan Holiday Park Shared Spaces Safety: Encouraging responsible behaviour and safety in communal areas within caravan parks.

We know from the rising death tolls on our roads, 1063 Australians have lost their lives on our roads this year alone, up 12% on 2023 (ABS). The top three contributing factors leading to this loss of life is the fatal three, inattention, speed and fatigue.

Road Safety Research indicates: Road users are most likely to have a crash on Monday or Sunday as drivers return from their holidays. Crashes are most likely to occur between 10am and midday. Whilst crashes are more likely to occur in urban centres, fatalities are more likely to occur on regional roads.

We want to make sure caravan and campers have the most amazing summer break, but most importantly, we want everyone to get back home safely . Towing handbooks are distributed free of charge each year. https://www.letsgocaravanandcamping.com.au/safety/ https://coexist.org.au/

Macca’s Says Thank You To Forbes And Parkes

November 28, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Crew Members from Macca’s Forbes getting in the spirit on McHappy Day.

Aussies have rallied to help raise a remarkable $6.03 million for McHappy Day this year, with McDonald’s crew and customers showing up like never before to make this one of the most memorable McHappy Days in Australia to date.

The overwhelming support will provide more than 37,600 nights of accommodation at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) nationwide for families of seriously ill or injured children, so they can stay together and close to the care they need, while undergoing surgery or treatment in hospital.

Licensee of McDonald’s Forbes and Parkes, Jenny McLeod said “The day was a huge success, with both (Parkes and Forbes) restaurants raising a combined amount of $9,500.

“We couldn’t have achieved this without our generous customers, motivated crew and dedicated management teams.

“The Parkes RFS were also greatly appreciated – they brought along one of their trucks and a huge bunch of volunteers, who helped with customer service and fundraising on the day.”

This is the second consecutive year McHappy Day has raised over $6 million. All funds raised from McHappy Day go towards helping RMHC continue to support families in need through Ronald McDonald Houses, Family Rooms, Family Retreats, Hospitality Carts and Learning Program to support families through and after their child’s illness or injury.
