Worker Safety Must Come First This Summer

November 28, 2024 By Roxane Manley

With temperatures rising into the thirties across the state, SafeWork NSW is urging workers and businesses to start planning now for how they will stay safe during the heat this summer.

Employers have the primary duty of care for employees and are encouraged to develop a workplace heat management plan in consultation with their health and safety representatives and workers to ensure everyone stays safe when the temperature rises.

Heat related illnesses happen when the body starts to overheat due to working too hard. Symptoms can include a range of progressive conditions such as dehydration, fainting, heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Employers who have workers completing tasks outside must do their best to eliminate extended periods of sun exposure.

This can be achieved by providing shade, rotating tasks to reduce exposure, scheduling work to cooler times of the day and providing personal protective equipment such as hats, long sleeve shirts and also sunscreen.

Any worker who feels that their workplace is unsafe can make contact anonymously and report their concerns directly to SafeWork NSW on 13 10 50 or via the ‘Speak Up Save Lives’ app.

Parkes Promotes Peace

Pictured left to right – Nick Dion, Corey Stover, Sean, Dawn Marie, Kibbe Brown (team Lead), and Tianna Yellow Hair.

Parkes recently welcomed a very special group of visitors. Five indigenous Americans from the Sioux (Lakota, Dakota, Nakota) nation in South Dakota, visited as part of a Rotary Group Study (Cultural) Exchange. The visitors were from the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires).

The purpose of their visit was to observe and study another indigenous culture (the Wiradjuri nation) to examine and understand how they were maintaining culture while progressing in the wider community.

A tour of the Rotary Peace Park at the base of Memorial Hill was to highlight a successful example of a collaboration between Rotary and Wiradjuri and non-indigenous artists, promoting peace and reconciliation.

The group was welcomed by Parkes Mayor, Neil Westcott and the President of Parkes Rotary, Graeme Hunter. Wiradjuri artist and Chair of the Parkes Aboriginal Community Working Party, Irene Ridgeway, Parkes Wiradjuri Language Group President Geoff Anderson, Everlien Gardner TAFE teacher of Wiradjuri cultural studies and Sean James Cassidy, artist and designer of the park, guided the visitors through the landscape, explaining the significance of the natural forms and the art works.

The visitors found the park “very intriguing and a special place.” Carved installations with Wiradjuri iconography were the first art works the visitors had seen in Australia. They were very interested to see language represented within the art works.

They felt that the local Wiradjuri culture was being woven into the wider community which was a different situation from their own.

Parkes Wiradjuri elder Robert Clegg stated, “Bringing people together from different cultures starts a conversation, showing each other respect, develops trust.

Following on from the great success of the Australian Philippines Friendship mural, this recent visit by members of the Dakota Sioux nation helps to show that Parkes is able to lead the way towards a more accepting and peaceful future.”

Parkes Emerging As Flagship City For Inland Rail

November 28, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Inland Rail CEO Nick Miller and the Inland Rail Board of Directors visited the Parkes Special Activation Precinct on Wednesday 27th Novemeber, with Mr Miller declaring after the visit that Parkes has established itself as the flagship city on the Inland Rail project.

After visiting the Parkes Special Activation to review the freight and logistics facilities at the 4,800-hectare site, Mr Miller and the Inland Rail board held an official company board meeting in Parkes, the first time the board has ever met in the town.

Inland Rail will connect Melbourne to Brisbane via Parkes, while the Trans-Australian Railway connects Sydney to Perth via Port Augusta in South Australia and the Nullarbor Plain, with the Parkes Special Activation Precinct, sitting on the only junction of Australia’s two rail spines.

Inland Rail is expecting to be in full construction in every section between Beveridge and Parkes next year as it looks to complete the Beveridge to Parkes by sections by 2027.

Construction began on the Stockinbingal to Parkes section of the project in March this year, with 162 local residents employed on this section. Of this number, 28 are First Nations people. The section has also employed 54 women and spent more than $9 million with 97 local businesses.

Nick Miller, Inland Rail CEO, said “What we are seeing happening in Parkes with the Special Activation Precinct is just a taste of what is to come as Inland Rail gets built out further – there is no doubt that Parkes is the flagship town on the project right now.

“The Parkes Special Activation Precinct and Inland Rail complement each other to provide a compelling answer to questions of sustainable growth in Australia.”

The exhibitions have been coordinated with photographer, Peak Hill local and Arts OutWest Media Associate Judi Unger. “A big thanks to Arts of West for bringing the ‘Behind the Lens’ to the Peak Hill Carrington to share this exhibition and to help promote the Carrington as an exhibition venue.

Also, thanks to our local photographers for taking part in the ‘Peak in Focus’ exhibition to help support and promote Arts OutWest, our town and the Carrington,” said Judi Unger.

Inland Rail Closes In On $500 Million Spend With Local Companies

November 21, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Connecting Melbourne and Brisbane via Parkes, this 1500km rail project will complete our national freight network.

Newly released figures from Inland Rail reveal the project has now spent close to $500 million with nearly 750 local companies on the Inland Rail alignment since construction on the project started in 2018, delivering a major boost to regional communities.

At end-September, Inland Rail had spent $496 million with local companies, with around $100 million spent with local companies over the last 12 months alone.

From the $496 million spent so far, around $46.5 million has been spent with thirty-six First Nations businesses in regional Australia, with $7.5 million spent in the last year.

Inland Rail has also continued to be a major jobs provider in regional Australia, with the project providing nearly 6,300 jobs at end-September, with just over half of these jobs being filled by local residents and nearly 480 First Nations workers employed.

Local businesses in New South Wales and Victoria can learn how to supply to Inland Rail by visiting: inlandrail.com.au/opportunities/suppliers/For construction job opportunities, visit Inland Rail’s construction contractors’ websites at: www.martinusrail.com.au/careers/Stephen Jones, Inland Rail Executive Director Program Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability, said “Inland Rail has worked extremely hard to engage with local businesses and help to bring them on board as suppliers, and.to build skills in communities along the alignment, so local communities can participate and benefit from in this once-in-a-generation project and others in the future.”

Congratulations to Oscar Hendry for winning Best Regional Entry at the 2024 Parliament of NSW Parli-Flicks Short Film Awards.

Red Bend Catholic College: The creativity of young filmmakers was celebrated at the 2024 Parliament of NSW Parli-Flicks Short Film Award, and our Year 7 student Oscar Hendry won a medal for Best Regional Entry. This exciting competition challenged students from Year 5 to 12 across NSW to craft a one-minute short film exploring a thought-provoking question: If you were a Member of Parliament, what law would you pass and how would you implement it? Oscar’s video highlighted the doctor shortage in regional NSW and proposed incentives for doctors practicing in towns with a population of less than 20,000.

Parkes Musical & Dramatic Society: Less than two weeks until auditions for Mamma Mia. A lot of people have told us they are auditioning, but not yet registered.

Registrations are essential for those wishing to audition. So far we have about 40 people registered, but we can still fit more in. We will particularly need men. Mature men and young men (18-30ish). Please check out the audition pack at the link provided on their Facebook page, then get in touch with your favoured audition sessions.

Marshall Munn Was Born To Be A Firefighter

November 21, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Left: Marshall with Cadet Co-Ordinator Jack McGrath at RFS Sydney Headquarters. Right: Marshall at State Operations.

The Forbes & Parkes Phoenix recently reported* on local Parkes boy Marshall Munn, who was awarded the Young Volunteer of the Year (12-15 years) at the 2024 NSW Rural Fire Service Youth Awards.

Ironically, Marshall was born in 2009, on 4th May which happens to be International Firefighters Day and St Florians Day – Patron Saint of Firefighters.

In January 2022, at the age of 12, Marshall joined the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), quickly immersing himself in the organisation’s mission. Since then, he has actively participated in every possible training session and event.

Marshall is currently a student at Red Bend Catholic College in Forbes. In late 2022, when Parkes and Forbes experienced severe flash flooding, Marshall’s school was temporarily closed. During this time, he was on the ground, assisting wherever possible. He worked as an SES Beacon Operator and Communications Operator, helped create sandbags, and assisted in transporting essential personnel across floodwaters.

In 2023 Marshall’s team had the incredible opportunity to attend the Australian Fire Cadet Championships. He was humbled and honored to be chosen as the Cadet Captain. Then in September this year the team attended the NSW RFS State Championships in Albury. This time, he handed over the reins of captaincy to a fellow team member. The team performed exceptionally well, securing second place in two of the events they participated in.

“Looking ahead, I am eager to continue my journey with the RFS and aspire to secure a salaried position within the organisation. Whether serving locally or in a larger city like Sydney, furthering my professional growth and making a meaningful impact on the community,” said Marshall.

“I’d like to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to my Cadet Coordinator, Jack McGrath. Jack’s leadership and mentorship have had a profound impact on me and my team.”

Australian Koala Foundation Adoption Program

November 21, 2024 By Roxane Manley

Pictured is “Mum and Bub” Casey and Pip.

Last week, the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) announced the addition of two ‘Mum and Bub’ combos to their Adoption program – Paradise Country duo Kalari and Priyanka, and wild pair Casey and Pip.

Kalari has been a familiar face within the AKF’s adoption program for some years now, a popular adoptee with her first joey Mavis who was born in 2021. Now an independent Koala in her own right, Mavis is available to be adopted singularly.

Kalari’s newest joey Priyanka has already had her own taste of the limelight, visited earlier in the year by Priyanka Chopra – the Hollywood movie star that inspired her name.

The other pair added to the program are a wild Mum and joey, found recently on a Koala spotting expedition led by the AKF Koala Woman, Deborah Tabart OAM and nicknamed Casey and Pip.

“We were thrilled to find and observe Casey and Pip in their natural habitat,” says Tabart. “We were able to see how they interact with each other. Casey was very alert and protective, holding Pip as close as possible, which wasn’t easy considering Pip appears to be quite a daring little thing, prone to running off up to taller branches with juicier leaves.”

By participating in the Australian Koala Foundation’s ‘Adopt a Koala’ program, supporters receive an adoption certificate to keep, regular updates about their nominated Koala and the AKF’s current conservation efforts.

For more information about the Adopt a Koala program, please follow the link https://www.savethekoala.com/adopt-a-koala/
