Big Really Is Beautiful

September 21, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

I am very lucky to live in a home endowed with generous measurements. An inaccurate drawing of our dream home was one of the best mistakes ever made as a large home has so many benefits. When you have a spacious home you can easily fall into the trap of spreading yourself out – by collecting a myriad of items because you have the space. But a true aficionado of the large home will keep the feeling of spaciousness intact and a thing of beauty.

Our large empty shell of a home needed extra care when it came to decorating to make sure it looked amazing and not cavernous. If money is available or calculated into the budget from the start, you have to be very clever how you are going to spend your hard-earned dollars to make sure your purchases will work the best.

Firstly, it is really important to select items that are in scale to the room’s proportions. Custom made furniture does not necessarily mean expensive. You need to find an Australian manufacturer that will do made to measure alterations. Remember to consider incorporating modular lounges into your design rather than continually adding extra single chairs as this can add clutter rather than style.

Secondly, the best way to fully take advantage of a large open plan space is to divide it into different zones and purposes. This will give atmosphere and individuality to each area. It will also give you cosiness and intimacy that may otherwise be hard to achieve.

Thirdly when selecting artworks, rugs, urns or other fluffing pieces these need to be oversized to look sensational and really give your home the WOW factor. A classic mistake is selecting smaller pieces and placing them on larger walls. Your mantra needs to be big is best. Place large arrangements or urns in corners or on surfaces where they can work their magic but do not need to be moved on a daily basis.

Be comfortable in your home and embrace the beauty of big open spaces by having the confidence to place one large
amazing object in key locations and resist the urge to add more and more elements into the look. And remember, large objects and more streamlined surfaces, is a housekeeping dream when it comes to cleaning.

Select a colour palette that will enhance your home’s dimensions. Larger spaces can take more colour and still look spacious, but I like to have an overall colour scheme to give cohesion to the overall design.

A big, generously proportioned home can be a thing of true beauty and an absolute pleasure to live in.

Webinar A Resounding Success

I held my very first online webinar on Wednesday night focusing on sharing my design tips and tricks for home decorating. The event was actually sold out with over 35 women watching and interacting. I had a live audience in-store as well, which created a very happy and positive vibe to start with and then combined with the women online it proved to be a fabulous night.

Online attendees were from all over the country from as far afield as Queensland and Melbourne, Port Macquarie, Sydney and even Bourke! So many women gathered together and had a glass of wine while sitting around and watching the screen and it made for a very relaxed and fun night out.

The webinar focused on just how easy it can be to create an amazing difference to how your home feels and from the feedback I have received there will be more events in the future.

The main point that was mentioned at the conclusion of the night was a disbelief at how easy it can be to change the way you feel about your home. The other main fact was how easy it was to join and participate in the actual webinar process. A fact which may have caused some ladies nervous tension prior to the event.

I was very touched to think so many people took time out of their busy lives to be a part of the night!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend
Love Karen x

French Doors Are An Interesting Option

July 27, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

French doors create a sense of luxury in any home. Their lavish styling is complimented by their practicality, with a variety of options available to open up your living area and allow wide access to a courtyard.

At the Glassplace hinged French doors are available as double or single doors, and come in either aluminium or Western Red Cedar with a full range of matching windows available in either material.

If interior wall space is limited, French doors are a great option. Available as both an open in or open out application, French doors have the ability to be a stunning 2400mm high. French doors can be fitted with toughened or laminated glass or with Low E glass for energy savings and more comfortable living.

Full locking options are available for security, safety and peace of mind. You can view various French doors and single hinged door options on display at the Glassplace show room. You can also see for yourself how Low E Glass can make your home more comfortable and energy efficient.

Visit the Glassplace showroom in Clarke St Parkes, the website www.glassplace.com.au or contact them on 6862 2346 to learn more about the range of French and single hinged doors.

Being Bold In The Bedroom

July 27, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Bedrooms are no longer just a place to lay your head after a long day of toiling. Our bedroom can be of great importance to our wellbeing. It can be a private sanctuary to retreat and withdraw to when needed. A beautiful bedroom allows us to relax and unwind, taking pleasure in the fact that we are safe and secure in a tranquil space we have created.

By surrounding yourself with items you love and cherish, your bedroom can become a reflection of your personality. Because it is a private space you can really express your style in a dramatic way. A bedroom is not on show to the world so decorating choices can be bolder. Get daring and express yourself with colour, prints and patterns.

When choosing your bedding and curtains, don’t be afraid to mix patterns, prints and different textures. Purchasing a quality mattress and bed will ensure a sensational night’s sleep. But for an instant update just change the bedding.

A new quilt cover can work miracles in changing the overall look. Throws and cushions add texture, warmth and bring the theme together. In my opinion the more cushions you pile on the bed the better the effect. This is a design rule that I follow to the letter.

Remember to decorate with pieces you love and that hold special significance, and incorporate photos of loved ones to create the story of your life. I love groups of photos arranged in block formations with the same frames to give
our everyday photos a designer look. A well-placed rug will give your private space a really luxurious feel. Imagine placing your feet on a soft shag rug each morning when you step out of bed.

Making sure you have enough storage is also critical. There will be no solace in the space if it is cluttered. If space allows, use artificial flowers or textural sticks in urns or pots, or add an indoor plant for a natural wow factor. Lamps and soft lighting will create an intimate feel, add an armchair and your room is ready to go.

Window Myths Busted

June 22, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

There are several myths when it comes to windows. Glassplace can help you sort the fact from the fiction.

Myth: You need Council or planning permission to replace windows.
Fact: Replacement of existing windows and doors does not require a planning permit, unless your home is heritage listed.

Myth: Windows don’t have any effect on energy efficiency.
Fact: Experts estimate that up to 70% of energy is lost through windows and doors, and 90% of this heat loss occurs through glass.

Myth: Double glazed windows work best.
Fact: Double glazed windows work well in hot and cold climates, however low-E glass works just as well. Also known as Pyrolytic, Smart glassTM, or Comfort PlusTM, it works in three ways: it reduces direct heat radiation from the sun; it reduces the hot and cold energy transfer between the inside and outside of the window; and the tinted version cuts down glare.

Myth: Anyone can install windows.
Fact: Not everyone can install windows correctly. Poor installation can result in leaking, drafts and difficulty opening and closing.

How To Decorate For Winter

May 25, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

In winter your home becomes your retreat from the outside world.

As the temperature drops we are drawn to stay inside, cook comfort food such as hearty soups and casseroles, and hibernate. It is a time for reading and relaxing with your loved ones.

So now is the perfect opportunity to create a cosy haven to enjoy the cold winter months ahead.

How do we create this atmosphere? Well it’s easy just by adding a few key elements.

Here’s my top 5 ways to ready your home for winter:

1. Move your furniture around. As summer decorating is all about simplifying to welcome the outside in, winter decorating is all about creating warmth and cosiness. Move your lounge or single armchairs closer together to create a feeling of inti- macy and position them around your heat- ing source to encourage long conversa- tions on cold winter nights.

2. Decorate the room with warm throws and scatter cushions in rich fabrics. Warm, deep colours as well as a variety of tex- tures in the cushions and throws will give the room instant warmth, cosiness and an injection of colour to brighten dull winter days.

3. Invest in a new rug. A rug instantly brings a room together and creates a defined zone to your family room. This is when a shag rug is my favourite choice. The textures and different layers of materials in a shag rug can give an instant and dramatic effect to the space. Shag rugs are available in an enormous range of styles and colours ranging from deep chocolates to vibrant ruby reds or simple neutral tones.

This season features many new variations to the styles of shags on offer. Carved and patterned shags as well as extremely textural shags made from combining a va- riety of silks, wool and fabrics.

4. Buy a lamp and turn it on. Everything feels better when a room is lit, while subtle lighting will set the mood.

5. Update your bedding and buy yourself that new quilt cover set. In winter we need more layers to our bedding to keep us cosy and warm. By changing your bedding sea- sonally it allows your room to be instantly transformed into a warm, luxurious retreat ready for serious snuggling through the cold nights. Heavier quilts will give you added warmth while throws and comforters complete the layering effect.

Make This Mother’s Day Present A Hit

April 27, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Mother’s Day is a really special day for me. Mothers are truly wonderful nurturing creatures, especially my mum, and they are definitely worth an enormous amount of spoiling.

Here are some ideas to make this Mother’s Day present a hit. It is all about the gesture not the price tag. At Parkes Furniture One we have gifts that will suit anyone’s budget or taste.

Most mothers like to create a home that is inviting, comfortable and welcoming. May- be mum would love some faux flowers in a vase to brighten up a corner of the room or maybe some new cushions to update the sofa.

Decorator pieces such as statues, candleholders or a pot or urn will also prove a hit. If you really want to pull out all stops, why not buy mum her own chair or recliner so she can relax in a quiet corner and catch up on her reading.

There is also the option of a Parkes Fur- niture One gift voucher, or an inhome consultation with me. I would love to help her bring her decorating dreams to life!

Come and see our enormous range of homewares and decorator pieces. We would love to help you pick the perfect gift for your mum.

Happy Mother’s Day to all! Love Karen xx

Cushions Have Magical Powers…

March 23, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

The decorating powers that cushions hold should never be underestimated.

If I only had one item to use to turn a house into a home, I would use the humble cushion to instantly add warmth and personality to a room.

Cushions are an abundant species in my home even though the male in resi- dence can’t understand the deep connection I have made with these innate objects. But all I know is that at the end of the day when all the cushions are picked up off the floor from where John has casually thrown them and they are replaced perfectly on the lounge once again, everything is good with the world and I can sleep in peace. My lounge room looks warm and inviting once again.

You may wonder what it is about these simple objects that can render such deep emotions from me.

To begin with cushions are an easy way to link your home’s colour palette together. They are a relatively inexpensive way to inject colour, texture and style to a neutral room. It is very easy to update your look with just a few new cushions in a different decorator style to immediately change the feel of a room. If we add a new rug, espe- cially a shag rug – my favourite, the room can undergo a facelift without too much work.

I absolutely love it when we get a shipment of cushions in store. It is like opening Christmas presents. To see and touch all the new fabrics, textures and colours and

New stock arriving daily work out how I can combine them for display is akin to the rush I get from shopping. Just look at the difference cushions make in these photos. The before and after photos speak for themselves and the results are powerful when a touch of fluffing comes into play.

Western Red Cedar For Timber Windows And Doors

March 23, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Western red cedar is a popular and durable timber that is sought after due to its beauty and durability. It is a timber that remains stable under most weather conditions and is not prone to shrinking or swelling. This means it holds its shape and ensures longevity.

As a low-density timber that offers very good thermal insulation, it helps with heating and cooling efficiency, reducing electricity costs and making a home more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Its versatility enables it to be used for both internal and external applications, as it is visually beautiful with rich and inviting colours. It has a fine texture and straight grain with growth rings often vis- ible. The durable yet soft properties let the material take very well to being stained and polished. The wood’s natural preservatives provide resistance to fungus and insects.
Western Red Cedar is a stylish and practical option with natural appeal, superior structural performance and elemental protection. For more information contact Glassplace on 6862 2346 or visit the showroom at 4 Clarke Street in Parkes.

The Low Down On Low E Glass

February 23, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

In The Central West we have a great climate for at least six months of the year.

So in autumn and spring we don’t need to be too concerned with temperature extremes.

On the other hand, our summers can get very warm and our winters rather cold.

Experience has shown the experts at the Glassplace that Low E grey tinted glass performs well in both summer and winter.

How does Low E tinted glass work? (Other names are smart glass, pyrolytic glass, or comfort glass.)

Low E grey glass cuts down the U value of a window or door. This is the amount of heat moving through the glass due to the difference in temperature: from the inside to the outside of your home, or office. Low E glass can therefore reduce your heating bill and your cooling costs.

Low E grey glass also reduces the total solar radiation coming through the glass. This is the Solar Heat Gain Co-efficient or SHGC. It also reduces glare to make your home more comfortable in summer.

The lower the numbers, the more benefit you will get from Low E glass.

If you still feel a bit confused about this glass, but want to know more, why not drop into the new Glassplace showroom in Clarke Street, Parkes. They will show you examples of Low E Glass in full sized windows so you can see what it looks like.

You can also have a go at their radiant

heat display to actually feel the difference Low E glass can make in your home.
