Those who attended the 2025 Picnic Races on Saturday 7 June were thrilled to see local trainer Sharon Jeffries win the Parkes Services Club Coradgery Cup with Way To Devine who was ridden by Cowra Jockey Matthew Cahill.

Colin Hodges reported on the Parkes Coradgery Cup meeting “Critically injured in a race fall at Tomingley in 2019, jockey Michael Hackett has not ridden since but maintains an interest in racing as the part owner of Way To Divine. Hackett, who rode nearly 300 winners, is now a committee member on Parkes Jockey Club and shares ownership of Way To Divine with local trainer Sharon Jeffries and her husband former jockey Dale Jeffries and for the big crowd it was a popular win.

Settling near last in the 1,400 metres feature race, the strongly supported Way To Divine ($3.10 to $2.80 favourite) was sent forward from the 500 metres point by top jockey Mathew Cahill and down the straight wore down Geostorm (Clayton Gallagher, $3.50) to win by over 2 lengths with Loud (Kody Nestor, $8) over 4 lengths away in third place.”

Shout out to the Parkes Picnic Races 2025 Committee for organising such a great event: President Tim Keith, Vice Presidents Ann Olson and Ian Brown, Secretary Tricia Trim, Treasurer Robyn Hawke, and Executive Members Christine Somers, Stafford Orange, Mark Olson, Kelly Spedding, Kathryn Blackstock, Fiona Glasheen, Sommer Bishop, Elissa Amor, Gai Smith, Tiffany Steel and Ian Brown.

A huge congratulations to Mason and Reed Wild from Parkes for their stellar performances at the 2025 Australian Junior Track Championships, held over the weekend at Fairbairn Park in Canberra and hosted by the ACT Motorcycle Club.

Mason Wild claimed an impressive third place in the hotly contested 85cc 4-stroke Modified (7–Under 12) class, showcasing his speed and skill on the national stage.

This is Mason’s second podium finish on the big stage in 2 months – finishing with another third place over the Easter weekend at Kurri Kurri for the 2025 Australian Junior Dirt Track Championship.

Meanwhile, younger brother Reed Wild powered through the competition in ACT, to take a strong fourth place in the 65cc class, proving that talent runs deep in the family.

With over 100 junior riders from across the country, both events were a showcase of Australia’s best up-and-coming motorcycle racers. The Wild brothers stood out with determination, consistency, and grit—two names to watch in the future of Aussie motorsport!

Cheney Oval Transformation Continues With New Lighting Boost

May 22, 2025 By Roxane Manley

Phil Donato MP, Jason O’Bryan, Tina Morrison, Lacey Turner, Cohen McGregor, Saxon and Oscar Gosper.

Parkes Shire Council is celebrating the completion of two major sporting infrastructure projects at Cheney Oval and the Turf 1 Hockey Field, with another exciting upgrade on the way.

Thanks to $2.97 million funding from the NSW Government, Cheney Oval has undergone extensive rehabilitation, and the Turf 1 Hockey Field has been redeveloped.

Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said “Games bring people to stay, play and spend in Parkes and nearby towns and the flow on effects of having top class facilities are good for everyone.”

A third project, the upgrade of the Cheney Oval sportsground lighting, has also now been announced, with funding secured through the NSW Government State Member for Orange Phil Donato MP said, “It was a privilege to announce on behalf of the NSW Government and Minister David Harris MP the $210,580 grants funding for the installation of new LED lighting at Cheney Oval.”

“I congratulate Parkes Marist Junior League Club on their successful application, which will contribute to the greater sporting infrastructure projects at Cheney Oval.”

Funding of $210,580 from the NSW Government, together with $75,000 from the Parkes Marist Junior League Club, will deliver a $285,580 upgrade of the Cheney Oval sportsground lighting. The project will install modern LED lighting, benefitting a range of sports including rugby league, touch football, hockey and cricket.

President of Parkes Marists Jason O’Bryan said the new lights would be a game-changer for local sport. “Having quality lighting at Cheney Oval will mean all our teams can train at the one venue, helping to grow our club and make it more convenient for families, especially during winter when training is currently split across multiple locations,” Mr O’Bryan said.

Works on the lighting upgrade are expected to commence soon, with completion scheduled for mid-2026.
