Double Demerits This Weekend: The double demerit point period across NSW will be in place for four days, commencing today, 11th June and ending on Monday, 14th June (inclusive). As today is a publicly notified school day, double demerit points will apply to all relevant school zone offences committed today. Parkes Highway Patrol Sergeant Martin Ling said the Queen’s Birthday Operation, the annual state-wide high-visibility traffic enforcement operation, would run over the June long weekend. “We want everybody to make the most of their time off and enjoy the company of their friends and family, but we want everyone to do their bit and travel safely. Officers will be targeting excessive speed, alcohol and drug driving, fatigue, seatbelt, helmet and mobile phone offences.

Bogan Fest Postponed: Australia’s Biggest Bogan Festival has become the latest COVID casualty having being postponed from June to 13th November. The latest flare up of the virus forced some vendors and entertainers from interstate to cancel at the last minute. Organiser Luke Acheson, while disappointed, remained upbeat. “It’s a postponement not a cancellation and that will allow us to fine tune some things so maybe it’s a blessing and not a curse after all. November means warmer weather, more time to prepare and more options.” Follow Australia’s Biggest Bogan Festival on Facebook to keep up-to-date with all the latest info.

Load Restraint Quiz Winner: Congratulations to Donald Wood, a truck driver from Narromine, who is the winner of the Load Restraint Quiz. Donald has won $500 worth of new load restraint equipment and was one of over 450 people who took part in the online quiz.

Heavy Vehicle Breakfast: Registrations are open for this year’s Central West NSW Heavy Vehicle Breakfast Forum at the Forbes Inn on Wednesday, 23rd June. Local farmers, contract harvesters, couriers, truck drivers and transport company operators are invited to attend. Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, who is organising the forum said this year’s event would be focusing on three ‘hot’ topics: effluent, load restraint and chain of responsibility; heavy vehicle access: and PBS vehicles. Register online at https://forms.office.com/r/g5hNK5jyec or call Melanie Suitor on 6861 2364. The forum is free, but registration is required for catering and COVID purposes.

Our Bloke – Thomas Unger

June 11, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Vice Captain Parkes Christian School Thomas Unger

How old are you? 17

Where do you go to school? Parkes Christian School.

What is your favourite after school activity? I usually like spending some of the afternoon playing the piano, though I should practice the music I’m meant to more.

What is your favourite food, movie and music? Any kind of spicy food is pretty good, I don’t really watch heaps of movies but ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ is always pretty funny, and my favourite kind of music has to be country and classic Aussie rock.

What do you want to do when you grow up? I’m not real sure yet, but I’ll probably be driving a Hilux ute and flying planes at some point.

If you could have a super power what would it be? Flying for sure, it would be awesome to fly around cliffs and get everywhere quickly.

What makes you laugh the most? I know Dad would like me to say it’s his jokes, but it’s probably listening to my mates tell stories that seem to change every time they get told.

If you were the ruler of your own country, what would be the first law you would introduce? I would ban yellow lollies, as they are always the last ones left in the bag for a reason.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. I’ve climbed to the top of Mt Kosciusko, and being the tallest mountain in Australia, I thought it would be downhill the whole way down but I was wrong.

More Than Just A Butchery

Billy Spence has been operating Forbes Central Butchery for a few years and what started as a small family business to serve the local community has quickly turned into something far bigger.

Forbes Central Butchery now cover the Parkes and Forbes Shire from Bogan Gate and Trundle through to Tullamore and Tottenham with deliveries every Friday.

“There’s no order too big or small,” said Billy. “We are now also targeting local farmers markets with our new and unique ranges of sausages and other selected products,” he said.

And with the local Forbes Rotary Markets on tomorrow, 12th June what better time to trial Billy’s new snags in Victoria Park in preparation for the Forbes Central Butchery Sausage Sandwich Eating Contest at the Australia’s Biggest Bogan Festival on 13th November?

Tallulah’s Return To The Stage

June 11, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Tommy Jeffs is back in glitter as he takes his cabaret show to Forbes in July, in aid of Ronald McDonald House.

When Tommy Jeffs OAM hung up his alter ego Tallulah’s sparkly gown in 2020, he was sure she had retired forever. Then Ronald McDonald House in Orange called on Tallulah to raise some funds for their vital service and Tommy could not say no.

So, the perpetually busy Canowindra legend will be taking his cabaret show to Forbes for Christmas in July in collaboration with Forbes Shire Council.

“I have had friends that have used Ronald McDonald House. They are getting more and more people over there and it is becoming harder to raise money to support the good work they are doing. It is much easier to raise a lot of money in one night, than to do a lot of little fundraisers.”

Tommy knows this well, after a career of fundraising over $1 million, which earned him an OAM last Australia Day.

Those who know Tommy, will not be surprised that Tallulah is back. As Canowindra’s mover and shaker, he is not one to remain idle. During lockdown last year, Talullah gained a cult following of half a million people around the world from posting short clips online.

When asked what people can expect of the show, Tommy said: “They will get value for money. A beautiful meal, a variety show and a good laugh — and that is all we need

From Discard To Display

WELDING WITH WASTE…Miranda Barnes from Trundle Central School worked on her school’s winning entry called Time in Chain, and entered her own work, which received a special mention. “I started welding about seven months ago and used my new skill to create something.”

The 47 entries into this year’s Waste to Art competition and exhibition have not only given the three judges a very tough task to pick the winners, but also look particularly well on display in a gallery setup in the newly refurbished Coventry Room.

Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton opened the exhibition on Monday night and told the packed venue the imagination of the entrants had astounded her. “The thought that has gone into each piece, and the physical making of it, is just wonderful.”

She said feedback from the three judges, Bill Jayet, Margot Jolly and Michael Chambers, was that the quality of entries had given them a headache in deciding on the winners. “They also commented on the artistry and talent of the entrants, and how well the pieces had been displayed in the exhibition.”

The theme for this year was steel and aluminium cans, and the winner of the yearly theme prize is Meredith Barber for her piece called Patio Flowers. She also won the Community 3D category with this piece.

The Special Category – Scrap Metal prize went to Helen Standen for Bloody Linen Dresses. She also won the Open 3D category with this entry.

Other category winners are: Middleton Public School (Building Sculpture 2D – Barugil); Rex Veal (Building Sculpture 3D – Chook RV); Ballantyne Family (Community 2D – Alice’s Garden); Ian Rowe (Communi-ty Functional – Shower of Enlightenment); Elsie Mahon (Open 2D – My Old Cot Quilt); Deb Jones (Open Functional – Scrap Bin Lamp); Blake McMahon (High School 3D – Jeff); Trundle Central School to Work (High School Functional – Time in Chain); Amarni Reidy (Primary 2D – Rainbow Magazine); Elijah Cole (Primary 3D – Viking Ship); and Kelsey Finnegan (Primary Functional – Fruitilicious).

The exhibition is open until 26th June and the winners will go through to the Regional Exhibition hosted by the Coonamble Shire Council.

Elsie Mahon won the Open 2D category with this piece she calls My Old Cot Quilt. When Elsie came across some parts of her old cot, the fond memories inspired her to create this artwork.

A Waste Of Time

June 4, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

I decided I would have a try
At doing Waste to Art.
Recycling old to make objects new
Sounds easy – but where to start?

I went down to the library
To see the latest ones on show.
What do they use ? How can they make stuff?
To see them may help me to know.

Well! There’s nothing they won’t use.
(Though I viewed some with distaste)
But though my art is fairly limited
We have an awful lot of waste.

Rex says it will come in handy
I mustn’t throw it away.
It will end up “just the thing we need”
Upon some far-off day.

Car parts, wheels, gates and iron,
Posts of wood, cement and iron,
Materials to “build that shed one day”
Can’t remember them all, though I’m tryin’.

I know! I’ll build a sculpture!
In the garden to be seen
By those who come to visit us-
(I began to get quite keen.)

I searched, and found just what I need.
I put them in a pile.
While I thought about how to make
A sculpture with pizazz – and style.

Visitors can “Oooh and Aaah” over it
On Open Gardens Day.
It will look so fine, so cultured, so clever.
“I wonder what they will say?”

But an old-car man came. He bought three wheels,
Swapped Rex some tools for my cattle grid.
Took some iron lace, a tractor seat
And a camp oven (without a lid).

All this came from my sculpture pile.
It was gone before I found out.
Ambition was dashed. Inspiration was quashed
(That’s what art is all about.)

So here I stand. All my plans are gone.
Reality is – they are now all ghosts.
For all that is left is a petrol drum
And three big iron posts!

Two New Pump Stations For Water Security Project

June 4, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

The future of water security in Parkes received a $5 million boost in funding on Monday.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack MP announced the funding from the Federal Government’s Regional Partnership at the Parkes Water Treatment Plant. The funding will go towards Stage 2 of the Parkes Water Security Projects for two new pump stations.

Mayor of Parkes Shire Ken Keith OAM said: “These valuable water projects will future proof the Parkes township water supply and support anticipated residential growth as a result of the thousands of new jobs created by developments such as Inland Rail, mining and the Parkes Special Activation Precinct.”

Andrew Francis, Director Infrastructure at Parkes Shire Council, said the total project was about $60m. “The $5 million will provide two key parts of scope for the project: one pump station on the Lachlan river and one on the outskirts of Parkes township. This will really activate water security into the future on the 40 to 50 year time horizon with a 3,000 to 4,000 population increase for Parkes providing long-term strategic investment in Parkes, with water a key part of that.”

Andrew said once the full project was complete, Council would have access to the full 12 gigalitres of water that it owned within the Lachlan valley. “Currently we only have access to about six of those gigalitres, which means it would be a 100% increase in the total value of water supply over the next 40 to 50 years.”

The announcement formed part of a $10M commitment to deliver three projects in Central West NSW to strengthen economic growth, that also includes the Central West Industrial Park in Forbes, and a $1 million upgrade for the village centre of Lake Cargelligo.

Michael McCormack said the funding would make such a difference by creating jobs and opportunities, and unlocking the wealth of these areas.

Lake Endeavour was turned into a feast of colour and fun in perfect autumn weather on Sunday when the Parkes Endeavour Dragon Club hosted its very first regatta.

Seven clubs in the Central West from Bathurst, Wagga Wagga, Forbes, Dubbo, two from Orange and Parkes combined into teams to compete in the 13 races on the day over 2km and 200m.

The Endeavour Dragons paddled their hearts out and managed a first place and three third places.

The club also celebrated its third anniversary and the newly completed shade shelter was officially opened by Phil Donato MP, while Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith, Cr Bill Jayet and many community members joined in the celebrations on the day, including a come and try session for newcomers to have a go at the sport.

Costa Brightens Cold Eco Day

June 4, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

TV presenter and garden guru Costa Georgiadis with students from Parkes at Eco Day last week.

Famous TV presenter known for his knowledge on growing food and flowers as well as beards, Costa Georgiadis entertained 350 Year 5 students from Parkes and Forbes on Eco Day last week.

Students from the five primary schools in Parkes travelled to Forbes where Costa talked about sustainability, while they also attended several hands-on workshops.

Costa inspired and encouraged students to be the change makers and work at things that they were passionate about. He reminded the children that he did not start out life planning to be a television host on Gardening Australia!

“He is such a vibrant ambassador for the environment and a dynamic presenter,” said Judy Unger who helped out on the day. “The coordinators of this event, Marg Applebee and co did a fabulous job. It was a great day!” The day was organised by Central West Lachlan Landcare.

Parkes student Ella Butler who volunteered at Eco Day said he was wonderful with the kids and got across a good message while keeping it interesting and relevant to the audience. “There were a few giggles too. He is definitely passionate about what he does.”

Costa attended a Landcare dinner in Forbes on Friday night and to finish off his visit, he attended the Forbes Riverside Community Garden’s open day to give the community an opportunity to meet him and be part of his visit.
