Parkes Shire Cultural Grants Now Open

May 6, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Local groups and organisations are encouraged to enhance their musical, cultural and artistic endeavours by applying for a Parkes Shire Council Cultural Grant.

The aim of Council’s Cultural Grants Program is to encourage and support the development of local community organisations, services and strategies, which make a positive contribution to the community and cultural life of the shire. Applications must request a grant of at least $2,000 with the total funding pool at $10,000.

“The grants can be utilised in a variety of ways, including to develop a new project, extension or enhancement of an existing project, purchase of equipment, or minor capital works,” said Manager Cultural, Education & Library Services, Kerryn Jones.

In 2021, five community cultural projects were successful in their application for funding. “The Parkes Potters Group were thrilled with the equipment they were able to purchase,” said Parkes Shire Councillor Bill Jayet.

“The equipment has enabled them to extend their coaching and mentoring of new skills in the production of clay sculptural pieces and pottery to new members through in-house learning days.

“The Parkes Potters have been an active community group for over 50 years and Parkes Shire Council was pleased to be able to support their contribution to creative pursuits in the community,” said Bill.

Cultural Grants application forms are available on Council’s website at www.parkes.nsw.gov.au or you can obtain a hard copy from your local library. Applications close on Friday, 3rd June.

For advice and support in completing the application, contact Council’s Grant Officer on 6862 9127. Successful applications will be announced in July 2022.

Our Young Gal – Anna Orr

May 6, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Anna Orr – Parkes Public School Captain

How old are you? 11

Were you named after anyone? Not that I know of.

What three things would you like to pack in your lunch box every day? Rockmelon, sandwich and crackers.

If you could choose any job in the world, what would you do? I would either be a farmer because I love animals or a doctor as I love helping people.

If you could invent something, what would it be? A cure for cancer.

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? To be honest I really don’t know. I’d probably buy food for dinner and cook all the amazing things I’d love to cook.

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done? Seeing a snake. I live on a farm, so

this is a common scare.

If you could meet any historical person, who would that be? Anne Frank, she interests me so much.

What makes you feel like dancing? Any music with a good beat.

If you found a genie, what would you wish for? For COVID to be gone in a snap of a finger.

Biggest Anzac Day Commemoration In Recent Memory

April 29, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes High School student Melinda Acret meets John Bogey and his horse at the Anzac Day commemoration on Monday.

The commemoration of Anzac Day in Parkes on Monday was the biggest in recent memory with well over 1,000 people attending the Dawn Service and March, and over 400 the ceremony in Cooke Park.

“It is the biggest ever in my time,” said Paul Thomas, Parkes Sub Branch secretary. “I have never seen Memorial Hill so packed for the Dawn Service.”

Paul said many visitors from the Elvis Festival stayed on to attend the Parkes commemoration. He was equally impressed with the support from the schools and the number of students who turned up to take part.

The guest speaker, Major General J Paul Stevens, AO (retired) said the strength of Anzac Day had waxed and waned over the years, “but I think it will remain strong for three reasons”.

He said firstly the date of 25th April was not a date to celebre a victory, or mourn a defeat, but a day to recognise the human cost of war.

Secondly, the name of the day did not represent a battle or a place. “Anzac was a name for a group of people and it is people who are the focus of this day. We do not mark this day with military parades and shows of might and power. We mark it much more personally.”

The third reason he said was what some would call the Anzac spirit and the values of courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice. “The world changes daily and we change with it, but these values endure especially in tough times. We see them in our communities in times of bushfires or floods, we see them in our emergency services, in our health services as we have done during the pandemic, in the defence force, and today on Anzac Day. We remember those who served, and give thanks for the example they set for us.”

Parkes Showground All Shook Up

April 29, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Members of the Parkes Showground Land Manager committee with Mayor Ken Keith (3rd left), Sam Farraway MLC (4th left) and Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson (right) at the announcement of additional funding last Thursday.

Additional funding of over $2 million announced last week will ensure the new pavilion at the Parkes Showgrounds will be constructed after a massive escalation in building costs hampered the realisation of the project.

The additional funding from the NSW Government’s Crown Lands Improvement Fund would ensure the completion of the new pavilion along with key fire safety upgrades.

Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson said: “Of the $2.1 million, $1.78 million is being allocated to the next stages of the new pavilion that is being constructed at Parkes Showground as well as a further $382,000 for fire safety upgrades to benefit other buildings.”

“The additional funding will ensure the showground plays a central role within the community by hosting the annual show and events like the Parkes Elvis Festival, farmers’ markets and supporting emergency evacuations if needed.”

Sam Farraway MLC said the NSW Government’s showground stimulus funding had supported a complete overhaul of the Parkes Showground.

“Showgrounds are the heart of local communities, they are where we come together to showcase and celebrate the local region and through the Crown Reserves Improvement fund Parkes Showground has received a complete overhaul,” he said.

“This funding is also supporting the upgrades to the heritage-listed grandstand including its roof, floor, drainage, subfloor ventilation, masonry walls, and timber columns and balustrades along with improvements to lighting and additional power points for camping and stall holders.”

The Parkes Showground Land Manager received a grant of $4,046,020 from the COVID-19 showground stimulus program in August last year to realise its dream of a new pavilion. The escalation of building costs during the pandemic meant the initial grant was not enough to complete the new pavilion.

Sam and Kevin were in Parkes last week during the Elvis Festival to make the announcement, and attended the official opening of the event on Saturday in Cooke Park.

What did it mean to you today to deliver the Anzac Address by Modern Youth?

April 29, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Kasey Morgan and Patrick McPherson – Parkes East Public School Captains:

Patrick: It meant a lot to me having the opportunity to talk about people who came before us and did a lot for our country.

Kasey: It was an opportunity to honour the people who fought for our country.

Charlie Denham-Jones and Amanda Lowe – Parkes High School Captains:

Charlie: It was an honour to talk on behalf of the modern youth and to address what we’ve learned at school and tell the veterans that we are in awe of their medals.

Amanda: It was a great opportunity to speak and to see the whole of Parkes join together again after a long period of isolation. I felt very honoured to have shared the platform with Major General Paul Stevens, AO (retired).

Four Matches Of Major Pairs

April 29, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Elvis has departed the club and the exodus of fans brings our population back to par. Four matches of Major Pairs filled Tuesday’s program. Betsy Johnstone hitched up with Cherie Frame and powered away to a strong lead over Carol Reed and Maria Willcockson. Not to be outdone, seasoned campers, Team Will, tightened the guy ropes and drew level. However, their reprieve was temporary and Team Frame went on to win on Site 2.

A corker of a match kept the onlookers on the edge of their camp chairs on Site 3. The two teams, Lorraine Baker/Elaine Miller and Maureen Miller/Joan Simpson had to dig in and push for every point. Team Simpson began strongly, took a siesta mid-game, but came home with the wind behind them to claim victory by just one point!

Lea Orr/Lynn Ryan de-camped early due to illness in their match against the in-form pairing of Liz Byrne/Rhona Went on Site 4. Liz and Rhona have recently returned from State Pairs Play-offs and are at the top of their game!

On Site 5, Jan McPhee/Maree Grant found themselves wanting more power from the fuse box in order to pull ahead of Merilyn Rodgers/Marja Iffland, who played their little bowls socks off!

Many thanks to our umpire, Tony Riordan, who was kept running like a caretaker from site to site!

The draw for next week’s Major Pairs semi-finals: R Went/L Byrne vs J McPhee/M Grant, and M Miller/J Simpson vs B Johnstone/C Frame. Maureen, Joan, Gwenda, Carol and Lea won their green fees back, ready for the next trip!

Next Sunday, 1st May is our big Prostate Cancer Charity Bowls Day from 11am, 2-bowl triples, mixed teams, $15 pp includes lunch. All welcome, single players catered for. Entry forms at the bar.

Miss Priscilla For Second Time

April 29, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Elvis and Priscilla… Feature artist Taylor Rodriguez with Ashleigh Smith at The Dish.

Ashleigh Smith has not only brought back the Miss Priscilla title to Parkes but she is the first winner to have won the title two times.

Born and bred in Parkes, Ashleigh first entered and won in 2015 when she was 19 years old.

She was persuaded by her partner to enter again this year, and with the help of her stylist and sister-in-law Kaylee Smith she shot to fame on Thursday night.

The 26-year-old beautician said growing up in Parkes she always went to the festival with her parents. “When I won the first time it was amazing and something so different. It was a great experience!”

She said entering for a second time was much easier as she knew where to stand, and what to do and to say.

She spent about four hours on her hair and make-up before the competition. “Getting my hair right was the hardest as you have to get the Priscilla look. It was a lot harder than expected.”

She also made sure to do some research on Priscilla by watching videos of her and reading up on her style. “I wanted to match the 1960s style, her hair, bag, shoes, the whole package. She is very elegant and I really love her vintage style. She is such a beautiful woman. I also love her make up back then. It was more minimal and natural.”

Ashleigh felt it was really important to recognise Priscilla’s role in Elvis’s life and that it was good to have the competition as part of the festival. She enjoyed seeing so many Priscillas at the Parkes Elvis Festival every year.

She hoped to meet a lot of people at the festival and in the community during her reign.
