Water Flowing Into Parkes Wetlands

September 21, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Water flow to the site will continue for several weeks until the ponds are flooded to capacity.

The first drops of water have trickled into Parkes Wetlands, supplying the site for the first time in more than five years. While only a small portion of the total area has been flooded, waterbirds have already been observed returning to the wetland.

Parkes Wetlands will herald a new era for local birdwatching opportunities, ecotourism, and nature-based recreation. Parkes Shire Council is in the process of transforming a disused area close to town into a vital, thriving refuge for wetland-dependent species.

Once completed, the site will be an attractive and accessible public space for residents and visitors to connect with nature. The expected positive outcomes are wide-ranging and include benefits for regional biodiversity, the local and regional economy, public health, and social connection.

Planned future projects at the site will provide walking tracks, double-story bird hides, an amenities block, car parking, interpretive signage, cultural art and sculpture, over-water viewing platforms, and an outdoor learning space.

Local Parkes resident Andrew Tom has been monitoring birds at the site over many years. Mr Tom said some of the more notable visitors have included migratory shore birds that fly from regions as far north as Siberia. Historical bird records at the site include the Freckled Duck, Black-tailed Godwit, and Curlew Sandpiper, all listed as ‘threatened’ in NSW.

Central West Lachlan Landcare Chair Margot Jolly, a long-time advocate of the project, said she is thrilled to see Council develop an asset that will enhance important waterbird habitat. “Parkes and our surrounding region stand to benefit greatly from the rehabilitation of these wetlands” she said.

This project has been supported by the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust, whose Restoration and Rehabilitation program assists community and government organisations to contribute to the ongoing sustainable management and stewardship of significant environmental assets and services in NSW.

Mini-Field Of Women To Pop Up At Lions Park

September 21, 2023 By Roxane Manley

McGrath Breast Care Nurse Dianne Green will obe setting up a mini-field of women on Sunday 1st October in Lions Park.

The Parkes and surrounding area Breast Cancer Network of Australia (BCNA) mini-field of women is being held on Sunday 1st of October from 9:30am until 11:30am at the Parkes Lions Park.

Local McGrath Breast Care Nurse, Dianne stated, “I have held the mini-field of women since becoming the McGrath Breast Care Nurse in 2011, with the support of my family on the day. It is an opportunity for us to show support for those diagnosed within our community whilst sharing a cuppa and some home cooking”.

The BCNA’s role is to advocate for, connect, support, and inform those affected by breast cancer. With 1 in 7 women being diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia it is the most common cancer experienced by women.

The pink lady silhouette signifies support to the people affected by breast cancer and all those around them. This year will also include a blue silhouette representing the men diagnosed with breast cancer as one in 668 men will be diagnosed, and a white silhouette for those who we have sadly lost to breast cancer. Getting behind those affected by breast cancer in our community is a crucial supportive role we can all play.

To further support the BCNA and the McGrath Foundation, merchandise will be available on the day for purchase (cash only). A morning tea will be available for a gold coin donation and all community members are welcome to attend. Whether you want to sit and talk for a while or put a message of hope and love to a friend or family member around the silhouettes neck, please join in.

Dirty Gloves Nursery Open Day This Saturday

September 14, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Spring has sprung and what better place to celebrate than Parkes’ newest plant nursery, Dirty Gloves Nursery. Mitch and Casey Miles along with their three children, Finn (five), Noah (two) and Harper (9 months), seized the opportunity when news that the towns local nurseries were closing their gates permanently.

The family of five, at the time, struggled to find sufficient childcare to return to previous work and so they decided to take their already small hobby of growing vegetables, succulents and other garden ornamentals, and turn it into a small home nursery.

“I was already selling a few things from the front garden, so to erect a shade house in our paddock and expand what we had to offer was a very exciting opportunity” Miles said.

Boasting a variety of trees, flowers, grasses, bushes, natives, fruit and nut trees, roses and vegetables, Dirty Gloves Nursery has all you need to make your garden shine with colour, texture and fragrances.

There’s even a selection of garden art available from concrete statues to welded flowers and animals, even glass flowers made from recycled plates.

“We like fun and creative ways to spruce up the garden. There’s no shortage of creativity amongst our family members,” said Miles.

Although the nursery has been operating since January the urge to share some of the spring fever has prompted an open day event. Surrounding communities are encouraged to come and enjoy a free sausage sizzle, and picnic on the grassed area at the front of the nursery to celebrate the new business’ first spring.

“We are very excited to share our love for gardening with the people of Parkes and surrounding communities,” Miles explained. “With the prices rising across all other living expenses we want to offer quality plants and garden art at an affordable price.”

Dirty Gloves Nursery open day will be this Saturday 16th September from 10am – 2pm at 54 Corcoran Road Parkes. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Kids Helpline Lifts Lid On Youth Suicide Statistics

September 14, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Kids Helpline is seeing a significant increase in suicide related contacts requiring an urgent “duty of care” response. yourtown CEO, Tracy Adams, said Kids Helpline provided 4,608 duty of care interventions between 1 July 2022 to 30 th June 2023.

“Of these duty of care responses, 2,000 were undertaken where young people were at immediate risk of suicide and required emergency intervention. This is higher than we have ever experienced,” Ms Adams continued.

Paint The Town REaD 25th Anniversary Celebrations

It has been 25 years since the Principals of Parkes schools first joined together to launch an awareness-raising strategy to increase literacy skills from birth to Kindergarten. The Paint The Town REaD movement was developed in response to increased numbers of children entering Kindergarten without the literacy pre-skills or language, that set the foundation for learning to read.

This year Parkes has once again been painted red to celebrate Reading Day. Paint The Town REaD founder, Rhonda Brain said “It was very special because the continuation shows how much the wonderful Parkes community has embraced the Reading Day concept as a major strategy for spreading the vital necessity of having a language-rich environment right from birth, and celebrating literacy. When we celebrate something or someone we are declaring its/ their worth.”

The movement was originally founded on reseach conducted by Parkes Public School, in partnership with Charles Sturt University, on standards of literacy in Kindergarten to year two students. Research findings confirmed that language, especially rhyme and repetition, and book conventions in the years from birth to Kindergarten, were crucial for brain development and foundational to formal learning to read at school.

All Parkes school principals, preschool directors and midwives then set about to spread the word about the importance of reading, in a fun and creative, grand saturation of the community. Abundant research about brain development started being published by specialists, and educators in Parkes were greatly encouraged to know they were already on track. The movement, with its wisdom, creativity and multi-encompassing benefits has experienced incredible expansion. “This movement was/is a God-given idea,” concluded Rhonda.

Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN) along with partners invites community members and professionals to the 2023 Suicide Prevention Forum in Orange NSW.

The forum aims to encourage conversations, break the stigma and collaborate and learn about the future of suicide prevention in western NSW. WNSW PHN aim to create a space for people to connect with each other. Bringing together approximately 300 healthcare professionals, community members with an interest in suicide prevention, a number of presenters from service providers, the Western NSW Local Health District and keynote speaker and MC, Dr Norman Swan, from ABC RN’s The Health Report, the day is an opportunity to share the latest knowledge, information, hear stories of lived experience and collaborate together to identify gaps and discuss solutions.

This event is free for all attendees however spots are strictly limited. Catering will be provided on the day. Tickets are available at www.123tix.com.au/events/39686/wnsw-phn-suicide-prevention-forum-2023.
