Government Report Backs The Need For Reform In Australian Aged Care

August 31, 2023 By Roxane Manley

The release of the Government’s Intergenerational Report (IGR) backs the need for reforms being considered for aged care in Australia, according to Aged and Community Providers Association (ACCPA) CEO Tom Symondson.

The IGR forecasts the number of Australians aged over 85 will triple, and those over 65 will double in the next 40 years, with demand for aged care set to spiral.

But also fewer Australians will be working and paying tax, putting significant and continued strain on the federal budget.

“We know that we need a system that supports access for all people in Australia. Every Australian should have access to high-quality aged care that is sustainably funded over the next 40 years and more.”

“The Government’s Aged Care Taskforce brings hope that the problems facing aged care can be fixed and the sector improved. The IGR shows just how vital this work is for all Australians.”

“More than half of aged care providers are losing money on every resident, and the situation for home care providers is on a downward trend. That’s not sustainable now, let alone in the years to come as demand for aged care surges.”

Fourth Consecutive Trophy For The Mighty Parkes Boars

August 24, 2023 By Roxane Manley

The Parkes Boars 1st Grade team celebrating just moments after becoming the New Holland Cup Premiers for 2023.

Week to week throughout the 2023 season, the Parkes Boars struggled to get all grades on the field. Yet despite heading into the finals as the underdogs, the Boars took the honours from the fancied Mudgee Wombats last weekend.

Led by their Captain, and possibly the hardest working man in New Holland Cup rugby, Ben Ryan, the team streamed onto the Glen Willow rugby pitch.

Mudgee took the first points of the game after the Boars were penalised on the 15m line. But the conversion was spread wide.

Return of play saw Boars gifted a penalty attempt on the 22m in front, with Luke Bevan putting the Boars on the scoreboard.

The players settled, and the Boars gathered a pod and worked the ball down the field with a well executed pick and drive to within 10m. The ball was passed to Soropepeli Soqe, who scored next to the posts. Luke Bevan added the extras and the Boars took the lead 10 points to five.

The second half saw a lift in both sides but Boars Luke Bevan found a small gap in the Mudgee defence and put the ball over for a try, following with a successful conversion.

Mudgee found their rhythm and crossed the line twice to chase the Boars down, evening the scores at 17 a piece. Discipline let Mudgee down, and at the 57 minute mark, Luke Bevan was gifted another shot putting the Boars in front by three points.

With seven minutes left in the match, another penalty was awarded to Parkes, Bevan took the shot and scored the three points.

Moments before regular time was up Mudgee found a gap running on the wing and added another seven points to the tally, taking the score to Mudgee 24 to Parkes 23.

The Mudgee crowds went wild, but from somewhere deep, the Boars held tight and kept their discipline, focused on their own game and worked the ball down to within 15m. Mudgee couldn’t help but take that step too far and on the fourth minute of injury time, Luke Bevan took the penalty kick of his life right in front of goals, to give the Boars a two point lead and the win. The final score was Parkes 26 to Mudgee 24.

This was a record breaking match for the Boars, being the fourth Championship in as many years.

The whole team worked harder than ever for this honour and it was difficult to single out any individual player. The front row Jason Lowe, Rory Nock and Lewis Gravatt, although monstered by a much bigger pack, held their own making tackle after tackle to disrupt the Wombats flow.

Chris Parker and Mitchell Westcott as flankers kept running all game, Mackenzie Green and Jacob Hardy in the second row put in the hard yards to keep the forward momentum.

The whole forward pack was locked together by their Captain Ben Ryan both physically and emotionally.

Callum Reed in half back, Will Bevan and Mick Watt on the wings were well supported by Tupou Verti, Soropepeli Soqe and Mesake Kurukitoga.

Congratulations to the finishers, Dylan Hood, Jackson Guy, Rohan Kopp, Dyllan Philips, Tom Woods, Will Woods, Will Smith and Uraia “Junior” Sartibau.

A massive thank you is extended to team Manager Brendan Guy, Club President Kev Oliver and the families, friends and fellow Boars who came and supported the team throughout the year.

Supermarket Superprofits Slammed

August 24, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Farmers around Australia have welcomed the Federal Treasurer’s announcement on tackling big business market power after the big two supermarkets posted enormous profits this week.

On Tuesday Coles announced a whopping $1.098 billion profit while Woolworths announced a mind blowing $1.62 billion profit on Wednesday.

NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin said it was very disappointing that every one of those dollars came out of an Australian’s pocket at a time when families were struggling to make ends meet, repeating calls for action from the federal government.

“Families are facing huge cost of living pressures while farmers are getting paid cents on the dollar for their produce, and the two biggest companies in the middle of the fresh food supply chain are getting fat,” Mr Martin said.

“Farmers have been consistently telling us they’re not getting paid anywhere near what the food they produce is retailing for, so it’s hardly surprising Coles and Woolworths are turning such eye-watering profits.

“No-one is saying Coles and Woollies can’t make a profit – it’s just the size of those profits during a cost of living crisis that is the issue,” Mr Martin said.

Parkes School Of Dance Winter Workshops

August 24, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Tiny Dancers (3-5year olds) Wendy Kingham, Halle Hutchings, Ruby Elliott, Grace Westcott, Miss Sharyn Constable, Savannah Sole, Abigail Smee, Phoebe Paude.

Last weekend, teachers and students at Parkes School of Dance Inc were thrilled to host guest teacher and Royal Academy of Dance examiner, Miss Sharyn Constable at their May Street Studio for a weekend of winter workshops.

The weekend workshops were proudly supported by Northparkes Mines and the Parkes Shire Council 2023 Sports Grant. Parkes School of Dance Inc is thrilled to be recognised by the arts and sport. Without their support, these workshops wouldn’t be such a huge success.

The two big days of ballet and dance workshops saw 24 dancers, between the ages of 18 months and adult, and three teachers, participate in coaching across 14 hours of dance workshops. Many dancers had their first experience of dancing, three hours of ballet across two days with a highly regarded guest teacher.

“Thank you so much for inviting me out to Parkes. It was such a joy to see, and finally meet everyone in person. Both the students and teachers were so delightful,” said Miss Sharyn.

“I look forward to a time when we might have the chance to do it all again.”

Parkes School of Dance students are in the midst of working towards their Royal Academy of Dance Ballet exams, coming up in early September.

“The opportunity to learn from different teachers does not happen often, let alone with a Royal Academy of Dance Examiner! Miss Sharyn inspired our dancers and teachers to think like ballerinas,”

Parkes School of Dance RAD teacher said, “Welcoming Miss Sharyn to our studio was such a wonderful experience for dancers of all ages and our teachers. As a teacher, I am always trying to find ways to improve my teaching. Miss Sharyn’s generosity of knowledge is invaluable!”

Successful Be Road Ready For Harvest Field Day

August 24, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Last week’s Be Road Ready for Harvest Field Day, held at the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange, was a success with approximately 50 people attending.

Attendees at last week’s Be Road Ready for Harvest Field Day were a mixture of farmers, contract harvesters, transport companies, agricultural machinery retailers, government agencies, council staff and relevant associations.

The event was supported by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), Transport for NSW, the Grain Transport Safety Network (GTSN), SafeWork NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Farmers and the Australian Custom Harvesters Association.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said anecdotal feedback from attendees on the day was very positive. “Regulations are constantly changing and events like this are important to ensure people are up to date on what’s required before the upcoming harvest period,” said Melanie.

The day featured presentations about chain of responsibility, conditional registration and primary producer concessions, GTSN’s updated resources and fire safety.

“The highlight of the morning was the hands-on machinery display, where participants were able to measure various vehicles and implements and read the relevant notice to work out what the travel requirements are.” Forbes Machinery Centre, Hutcheon and Pearce, O’Connors and Bob Wythes, were very generous in loaning the equipment for the display.

“Thanks to everyone who assisted to organise and promote the event, and to everyone who registered and attended,” Melanie said.

If you missed the field day, free satellite events will be held in Bedgerebong, Derriwong and Trundle, with breakfast provided. There will also be a free session at the Parkes Show Farmer’s Day. Details are:

Ken Keith To Serve His Final Term As Mayor Of Parkes

August 17, 2023 By Cr Ken Keith OAM

One of the most familiar faces in Parkes would have to be long serving Mayor Ken Keith OAM.

I wish to advise the residents of Parkes Shire, my fellow Councillors and Council staff of my desire to see a succession plan to a smooth transition to a new leadership team.

I thought it was appropriate to give advance notice of my intention to step down as Mayor so that my fellow Councillors have time to properly consider a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor they believe will be best placed to lead our team into the next election and beyond. I express my gratitude to all the dedicated Councillors I have served with over the years and the extremely talented staff that have helped guide our Shire.

In September of this year, it will be my privilege and honour to complete my 40th consecutive year serving the Parkes Shire Council and thus the Parkes Shire communities. I commenced my 17th year as Mayor in July, after serving my mentor and friend, the late Robert Wilson OAM, for 17 years as his Deputy Mayor.

I would like to acknowledge the outstanding leadership and advice of the two General Managers, the late Alan McCormack PSM and Kent Boyd PSM with whom I have worked closely during my term at the helm. As Sir Isaac Newton is credited to have said “I am standing on the shoulders of giants”. I believe as the current Councillors of Parkes Shire we are doing just that, as our predecessors have shown vision and foresight.

Parkes Shire Council is now highly regarded in Local Government circles around the State and has a very exciting future.

In making this decision I acknowledge the wonderful support of my devoted wife, Sue, who was only engaged to a prospective Councillor way back in 1983. Our three sons, James, Max and Douglas, have accepted sharing their father’s time with his passion for Parkes Shire, for which I am most grateful. It is now time to repay their unwavering support. More time for visiting our beautiful grandchildren and having some holidays and travel without worrying about clashing with a Council meeting!

I have also appreciated the support of my brother Tim and the many people who have assisted me in my farming operations over the years, this has allowed me to devote the time needed for this role.

In closing, I have had the pleasure to meet so many kind and compassionate residents, who care deeply about the various communities which comprise the Shire we all call home. I thank you sincerely for your mostly voluntary contributions which I believe is the glue which holds us all together.

Author Gabbie Stroud Shares “The Things That Matter Most”

August 17, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Veronica Shaw, Gabbie Stroud, Kerryn Jones and CR Bill Jayet at the author talk.

On Wednesday night, 9th August, guests at Parkes Shire Library enjoyed an incredible talk full of insight and humour from former teacher, and talented author Gabbie Stroud.

Gabbie, the author of moving memoir “Teacher”, delighted the audience with her impassioned talk covering everything from her life as a teacher, her consequential ‘burnout’, her writing journey from non-fiction to fiction and her fabulous new book “The Things That Matter Most.”

The audience particularly resonated with Gannie’s conflict between what she knew she needed to spend time on for her students, and what the system told her she needed to spend her time on, and the subsequoent toll this took on her mental health.

This led to an incredibly moving discussion about the importance of changing the language around burnout to describing it as “demoralisation”, to move the emphasis away from the individual and back to the system causing harm. Throughout the night, Gabbie’s passion for teachers and the incredible feats they perform every day was clear, even thanking them for their time at her talk as she understands first-hand, a teacher’s time is precious.

Gabbie read an excerpt from her new novel and talked about drawing upon that “what if” feeling teachers have. The constant feeling that something bad can happen at any time that they want to protect their students from. The feeling teachers have for some students when they “don’t get to go home with them to check if they’re safe,” and Gabbie’s own frustration with the phrase “it takes a village to raise a child.”

Gabbie’s new book “The Things That Matter Most” is available now and you can check out more about her at https://gabbiestroud.com.

Keep an eye out on the Parkes Shire Library Facebook page for their next great event.
