Apply Now For Round Two Sports Grants Program

September 7, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Do not miss the deadline to apply for Round 2 of the CMOC-Northparkes Mines/Parkes Shire Council Sports Grant Program.

Sporting groups and educational institutions in the Parkes Shire can apply for the latest round of the CMOC-Northparkes Mines / Parkes Shire Council Sports Grant Program. The deadline for Round 2 closes at midnight on the 30th of September 2023 with a total of $30,000 available to be distributed amongst successful projects that promote participation in sport or improve sporting facilities.

Together, CMOC-Northparkes Mines (Northparkes) and Parkes Shire Council are providing financial assistance grants to sporting groups in the Parkes Shire. The funding, administered by the Parkes Sports Council, aims to help sporting groups increase regular and on-going participation opportunities in sport, and improve sporting infrastructure. The funding is split between projects promoting participation and facility development projects.

Participation projects must deliver a sport or physical activity participation experience to an identified group of people. Facility development projects typically involve building new or upgrading sport and recreation facilities to support increased participation.

The first round of funding was awarded earlier this year and those grants went to a broad range of projects including upgrades to sporting facilities, such as a marquee and a victory podium, new corner posts and swimming training equipment to hosting a workshop.

Northparkes have supported the Sports Grant Program for a number of years. Managing Director Jianjun Tian said, “Northparkes proudly supports the continued partnership with Parkes Shire Council and our sponsorship of the Sports Grant Program. Sport plays an important role in the lives of many, and contributes to the health, happiness and prosperity of our communities.”

For more information about the CMOC-Northparkes Mines and Parkes Shire Council Sports Grants Program, you can contact Council’s Grants Officer on 02 6861 2398 or alternatively you can visit www.parkes.nsw.gov.au. Applications close on the 30th of September 2023, so start getting your applications ready.

Parkes NAIDOC Celebrations

September 7, 2023 By Roxane Manley

The Parkes NAIDOC Family Fun Day to be held on Saturday, 16th September, at the Wiradjuri Amphitheatre on Bushman Hill is a fantastic event that celebrates the Wiradjuri people’s rich Indigenous culture and heritage.

This year’s theme, “For Our Elders,” is a beautiful way to acknowledge and show gratitude for the older generation’s wisdom, guidance, and resilience in preserving and passing on the cultural heritage to future generations.

There will be local performances, a smoking ceremony and Wiradjuri artifacts on display, providing insight into the rich heritage and craftsmanship of the Wiradjuri people. This display is aimed at educating attendees and to serve as a reminder of the rich history that continues to shape the local community. In addition to the cultural performances, there will be service information stalls, a free sausage sizzle, and children’s activities.

The Parkes NAIDOC Family Fun Day is an excellent opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together and celebrate the vibrant Indigenous culture of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait people. It promises to be a joyful and inclusive event for anyone interested in learning more about Indigenous traditions, supporting the community, and having a great time with family and friends.

Parkes Arbour Shopping Centre Sells For $8.9M

September 7, 2023 By Roxane Manley

JLL sells Parkes Arbour Shopping Centre with a significant vacancy from Target’s 2021 national store closure.

Parkes Arbour Shopping Centre has sold for $8.9 million to a Sydney-based private investor, as demand for neighbourhood centres with value-add opportunities continues to outstrip supply.

JLL’s Sebastian Fahey, Dylan McEvoy, Nick Willis and David Mahood sold the shopping centre via an Expressions-of-Interest campaign on behalf of a Brisbane-based private investor.

In 2021, parent company Wesfarmers announced the closure or rebranding of more than 160 sites with many of the locations being rebranded to Kmart/K-Hub. The increasingly competitive market was too much for the Target business with landlords scrambling to backfill the vacancies.

Parkes Arbour is anchored by a Coles supermarket and supported by a Liquorland and two speciality retailers. The asset included a 4,019sqm vacant ex-Target space, allowing an opportunity to reposition and or redevelop the centre.

“Parkes Arbour Shopping Centre offered the purchaser an attractive repositioning play with the potential to significantly increase the centre’s income by splitting the major vacancy into smaller offerings. This resulted in the campaign attracting unprecedented demand for a regional neighbourhood centre with over 200 groups and 10 offers being received at the close of the campaign.”

Colleague David Mahood added “Parkes Arbour reaffirms the increase in demand for retail assets with value-add initiatives. Investors are continuing to seek these opportunities as they provide a secure holding income with significant upside through a repositioning.”

Visionary Support For Aspiring Regional Students

August 31, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Country Education Foundation has provided Forbes and Parkes aspiring university students a chance to tour Charles Sturt University campus open days.

The Country Education Foundation of Australia (CEF) has made it possible for dozens of aspiring country university students to see a university campus, with fully subsidised trips to three of Charles Sturt University’s campuses for their open days in August.

Thirty-four students took advantage of this amazing opportunity provided by the CEF, which covered their costs for transport, accommodation, and meals in partnership with Charles Sturt University.

The opportunity allowed students to visit Charles Sturt’s Wagga Wagga, Albury and Bathurst campuses, with 16 students checking out Wagga Wagga, eight students seeing Albury, and 10 students experiencing Bathurst.

CEF transported students from many different towns, including Forbes and Parkes, to attend the open days, to experience what university life is like at Charles Sturt.

Kelsey Mann and Cameron Frogley from Parkes High School, Clarissa Azzopardi, Hunter Kriedemann and Laura Jones from Red Bend Catholic College, and Grace Barbary and Czarah Saladino from Forbes High School, took part in the Wagga Wagga trip.

Students took the opportunity to learn about each campus, the courses they offer, and all other benefits of studying there.

CEF Manager of Partnerships Hilary Matchett, who organised the trip, said, “CEF are excited to partner with Australia’s leading regional university, Charles Sturt University, to give the opportunity to regional students to access their Open Days across three of their campuses.

“Students made the most of experiencing all that Charles Sturt can offer, from hands on learning in their state-of-the-art labs and facilities, to chatting to academic staff about course options, and accessing affordable and vibrant on-campus accommodation options”.

These experience camps offer more than a chance to see a university campus; they give regional students the chance to connect with like-minded peers, hopefully to then become friends for life.

In a separate program through its department ‘Three Rivers Department of Rural Health’, Charles Sturt has partnered with CEF for the last five years to offer scholarships to students studying a health-related degree at Charles Sturt. Students awarded grants by their local CEF foundation, from 18 local CEF foundations across the west are eligible to apply.

The CEF is a national for-purpose organisation that helps rural and regional youth aged between 16 and 25 access post-school education, training and employment through grants, scholarships, support services and resources.

Since 1993 CEF has awarded over 7000 individual grants and scholarships totalling over $15 million, with over 400 volunteers across its network of local foundations working hard to provide local students the support they need.

For more information on the CEF please visit www.cef.org.au or phone 1300 652 144.

Get Ready To Paint The Town Red

August 31, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Students are expected to start arriving in Cooke Park from 9.15am onwards. Come along, bring a book have a read and enjoy in the fun.

On 6th–8th of September 2023 we will celebrate our 9th National Conference, on Wiradjuri Country at Parkes, NSW, the birthplace of Paint The Town Red (PTTR). Rhonda Brain, the then principal of Parkes Public School started PTTR with six other local school principals and it’s in over 100 communities across Australia.

Our theme is Storytelling and Told Stories. We have been liaising with local elders in planning and preparation.

It is fitting that it will fall in National Child Protection Week and on Indigenous Literacy Day. Told Stories give every child everywhere a fair go at learning who they are, and where they have come from. The Conference will begin with Indigenous storytelling the very best and right place to start. We’re an early literacy movement. Encouraging people to read with children from birth, so they start school ready to learn.

Our brains do most of their critical development in the first three years of life. A baby’s brain doubles in weight in the first year, tripling by age three.

Every time we read, talk, sing and rhyme with children brain connections grow, and build the foundations for learning. Children with good foundational early literacy skills arrive at school:

• able to communicate their needs.

• understanding conversations

• able to take direction, and

• ready to learn to read and write, with a healthy brain.

PTTR have been helping children since 1997. From humble beginnings, PTTR has grown into a thriving community of over 100 local groups, helping over 500,000 pre-school aged children get ready to learn at school.

The movement is making a difference. If children start school without early literacy skills, no matter how good the teaching, these initial cognitive gaps increase as children go through school. Head along and help Paint The Town Red.

Staying Home Leaving Violence Support For Local Women

August 31, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Women in Parkes, Forbes and Cowra, who are leaving domestic and family violence, now have more support to remain in their home through a specialised program offered by CatholicCare-Wilcannia-Forbes.

Staying Home Leaving Violence focuses on women who have separated from a violent partner but who continue to experience abuse from the former partner.

CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes started delivering the program to the Cowra, Forbes and Parkes local government areas in the 2022-23 financial year. It is the first time the innovative program for victim-survivors of domestic violence, funded by the NSW government, has been offered in the three locations.

The aim of Staying Home Leaving Violence is to prevent women, and their children, from becoming homeless or having to move away from their support system of family and friends, and their job, as a result of leaving domestic and family violence.

Priority is also given to women who have experienced domestic and family violence before, and are from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background, or are affected by a socio-economic disadvantage, or who have a disability.

Staying Home Leaving Violence provides intensive support for women and their children. It works with local services and police to address numerous areas, including improving security of the property, safety, apprehended domestic violence orders and family law court for parenting plans.

CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes provides a range of programs and services caring for the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities, especially the vulnerable and at risk. To find out more, call 1800 067 067, go to ccwf.org.au or email info@ccwf.org.au

Put One Foot Forward For The Black Dog Institute This October

August 31, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Walk in solidarity with the 1 in 5 Australians experiencing mental illness each year.

The Black Dog Institute is calling on Australians to take a stand in solidarity for the 1 in 5 Australians experiencing symptoms of mental illness each year by participating in One Foot Forward – a national virtual challenge taking place in October – Mental Health Month.

The challenge is to walk, run, or roll 40km, 60km, 100km, 150km, or a distance that suits them throughout October, to show people experiencing symptoms of mental illness that they are not alone and to raise funds for Black Dog Institute’s crucial mental health research and support services in Australia. One in five Australians experience a mental illness each year which means around 5 million people are personally affected.

One Foot Forward can be a great way to take a positive step forward for your own mental health and show Australians impacted by mental illness that they’re not alone. You can take part solo, with a team or with your colleagues.

With mental illness costing Australian businesses $39 billion in lost revenue each year, Black Dog Institute is calling on corporate groups and businesses to join in.

This national virtual event is a great team building exercise for colleagues, can increase staff morale and help promote mental wellbeing in the workplace.

In 2022, over 28,000 participants walked, ran and rolled over 2,286,105km during Mental Health Month and joined in on the fun, got active, and raised funds to help Black Dog Institute.

Funds raised by One Foot Forward participants this year can assist in the research and development of digital mental health tools and apps for adults and children, support novel and innovative suicide prevention programs, and help community presenters reach school students to talk about mental health in schools and how to get support.

Parkes Meals On Wheels Invites You To Their Open Day – Today

August 31, 2023 By Roxane Manley

Head along today to the official opening of the new Meals On Wheels location at the corner of Forbes Road and Callaghan Street.

This week saw a big week of celebrations for the Parkes Meals On Wheels (MOW) branch with National Meals On Wheels Day on Wednesday and their 60th anniversary celebrations being held today, Friday 1st September.

Chair of Meals on Wheels Australia, Paul Sadler says the 70-year milestone is something to be truly proud of, as well as the many ways that Meals on Wheels supports communities, far beyond delivering food.

“One thing that has remained clear over Meals on Wheels’ 70 years is that the service we provide with the support of committed volunteers, is vital,” said Paul.

The Parkes Meals On Wheels branch has been operational since 6th January 1963 and they currently service 120 clients. In order to service those clients, MOW have around 180 volunteers covering the Parkes Shire including Parkes Peak Hill, Trundle and Tullamore.

The lease on their previous location was coming to an end, and they wanted to be able to be more self-substantial and return to the grassroots of cooking nutritional meals for their clients, delivered hot and fresh daily.

The new MOW premises, located at the corner of Forbes Road and Callaghan Street will allow for the reintroduction of a production kitchen for the fist time in over 30 years.

A MOW spokesperson said, “The open day is a chance to celebrate our 60th birthday. It is a great leap forward to deliver to the people of Parkes hot nutritional meals every day as well as a welfare check. We are more than just a meal.”

The Meals On Wheels open day will kick off at 12pm with The Mayor, councilors, Phil Donato MP and MOW volunteers in attendance. Phil Donato will also hand out certificates to some of the long serving volunteers. A BBQ and cake will be provided.
