The Prostate Package: What Are The Symptoms?

August 19, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Prostate cancer has become the most common cause of death among men in Australia. The statistics do not lie. In excess of 25,000 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and nine die each day, but 230,000 men are alive today after a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Early detection is vital for the preservation of life for any form of cancer. It can disclose whether the prostate is enlarged or cancerous. Experiencing difficulties while urinating is among the most common indicators. These difficulties include a burning sensation, stopping and starting due the enlargement, frequency, particularly at night, or blood in the urine.

These may not necessarily indicate that the prostate is cancerous. Prostate cancer can be a silent killer and you may not recognise any of these symptoms. Since it’s so important for men to make sure that they do not become a statistic they should talk to their doctor. All men, at the age of 50, should have the matter investigated. Any man, at the age of forty, who has a family history of cancer must talk to their doctor.

Many men are reluctant to have a medical check, due to a possible invasive physical examination. While this may be necessary, there are now alternative methods of detection. Failure to have that visit to your doctor may be deadly!

Awareness is essential for survival and support to prostate cancer travellers is helpful. The Parkes Prostate Cancer Awareness and Support Group meets every fourth Tuesday of the month at Parkes Neighbourhood Central at 7pm. Why not come and support us, support you? Contact Michael on 0408 975 643.

Inspirational And Heartfelt Concert

August 19, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Musical & Dramatic Society are known for their inclusive culture. Whether it be subtitles for the hearing impaired or Autism friendly relaxed performances so people on the spectrum, or who experience a disability, can come along to watch a production that is adapted to ensure suitability to the audience.

The society often cast people with disability in their productions – even one of their directors, Lyn Townsend, has a hearing impairment which requires adaptation at rehearsals so she can be involved.

About 18 months ago, the society were successful in a grant application under the Department of Social Services and Community Participation Stream to support people with disabilities.

So far, the grant has been used to support a number of people who have been cast in productions, and also for patrons with disabilities (and their carers) to come and watch the shows. A specialised screen was sourced from overseas to show subtitles where appropriate. The most important event to be supported by the grant is the All Abilities concert.

Featuring a combination of individual items and group performances in song, dance, recitation and a short skit, this concert will give people with disability (and their carers/support networks) the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a theatre star and shine on stage, in their own unique way.

There will be performers from around the district, joined by their city friends from Twinkle Star Dance Studio. They contacted the society and asked to be involved after reading about the event.

The concert will be hosted by well-known identities (with their own unique ‘ability’), Rhyse Forrestal and Lisa Martin who are sure to keep the concert ticking along with their own dash of comedy.

There will be only one concert, on 3rd September at 2pm. Make sure to get your ticket at www.parkesmandd.com.au.

The annual Be Road Ready for Harvest Field Day will be offered in person and online, plus three satellite events to reach as big an audience as possible.

Harvest time is upon us and the annual field day in preparation will be in hybrid form this year.

Farmers, contract harvesters, transport operators, pilot drivers and agricultural machinery retailers are invited to attend this year’s Be Road Ready for Harvest Field Day in person at the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange or online via Zoom on Thursday, 11th August.

Breakfast will be provided from 7:30am for the official program to start at 8am. There

will be onsite displays from 10:30 to 11:30am.

“After two years of COVID disruptions it is great to be able to offer this hybrid event to provide important safety information in the lead up to the harvest period,” said Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor.

Topics to be discussed include access, permits, fire safety, fatigue, safety around powerlines, compliance, insurance, mental health and more.

“Harvest is coming and it is important to refresh people’s knowledge about the current rules and regulations for legally and safely moving agricultural machinery, combinations and trucks on the road.

“Safety and compliance during harvest is very important. Operators need to be aware of their responsibilities and ensure that all warning devices and travel requirements are adhered to,” said Melanie.

“Regulations are constantly changing and events like this are important to ensure people are up to date on what’s required before the upcoming harvest period.”

Networking Event For Young Professionals

July 29, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Young, local and transient professionals in Parkes have a great opportunity to meet when the Country Universities Centre in Parkes will be hosting its inaugural Parkes Young Professionals networking session.

The free event on Wednesday, 10th August from 6 to 10pm at the Cooke Park Pavilion will include complimentary catering and drinks.

“These sessions will become regular chances for young local and transient professionals to meet in a social networking setting, allowing them to share skills and experiences and build relationships,” said CUC manager Jacob Cass.

“We hope that in doing so, we can promote longer retention rates for transient and relocating professionals, let our local professionals gain skills and knowledge from them and provide our industry partners with a community-based professional group to use in attraction strategies.”

Jacob said the first event would focus on building on the model through consultation with the attendees about how the Parkes Young Professionals community could be of service to them.

There are 50 tickets for this event and some have already been reserved. Tickets for this event can be reserved by visiting www.eventbrite.com.au/e/parkes-young-professionals-tickets

High quality educational experiences are what you find at Forbes High School. Highly experienced educators fill our classrooms who differentiate the learning to support all students. This creates an educational experience that shapes the future of the students, whether that be further study at university, TAFE or employment. All our graduating students are successful in the future career pathways and several of the cohort of 2022 have already secured university placements.

Our passion at Forbes High School is providing the complete education experience. High quality teaching and learning is paramount, this occurs in an environment rich in extra curricula opportunities and in a highly supportive and inclusive environment. Forbes High School caters for all students and supports their educational pathway, recognising that individual needs must be supported.

Forbes High School offers public speaking, academic competitions, sporting opportunities and caters to all areas of the Creative and Performing Arts. Recently, we had a very successful Forbes Eisteddfod with our school placed first in the schools point score trophy.

We work closely with our community partners including Forbes Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG), local businesses and our P and C. We have an active parent and community body who work alongside us ensuring that the education received at Forbes High School creates the best possible future for our students.

EDUCATION WEEK

Education Week 2022 takes place next week from 1-5 August. This year’s theme is ‘creating futures – education changes lives’ and celebrates quality education and the opportunities available to everyone in NSW public education.

Education Week is your chance to celebrate the achievements of your school, students or learning community. “This year NSW public education continues to celebrate the journey students and learners take throughout the NSW Education system, focusing on how we are creating futures for our students, staff and families.

“From the first days in child care to post-school pathways, our education system is preparing young people to be agile thinkers and lifelong learners.”

Creating Futures At Forbes North Public School

July 29, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Forbes North Public School is committed to ‘creating futures with education changing lives’ as a true reflection on what our school believes while celebrating the theme for Education Week 2022.

Throughout Education Week and across the month of August our school is offering multiple opportunities for wider community including parents, carers, and extended family to visit the school, enjoy meaningful celebrations and acknowledge the importance of public education.

Starting this week by celebrating ‘100 Days of School’, our 30 Kindergarten students dressed as if they were 100 years old to celebrate 100 days of primary school with parents and grandparents coming to school for a picnic in the sun on the common green area with a special cake cutting ceremony.

NAIDOC 2022 was celebrated with a cultural immersion inviting local Aboriginal cultural group ‘River Spirit’ onto our grounds for a full day of authentic cultural activities.

Next week during Education Week on Tuesday 2 August our school is open to our families from 10.00am until 3.30pm as our community comes to school at a time suitable to them to enjoy the playground sports and games, have lunch at the canteen, visit our classrooms and see first-hand what a day in public education really looks like.

Our students will also commence a unique sports program including golf and squash at Forbes Golf Club, lawn bowls at Forbes Bowling Club and cycling around Lake Forbes.

During August our senior students are attending an Eco Day in Parkes, hosting ‘Reading Up North’ previously known as Reading Downtown and Northparkes Mine are installing 20 roosting boxes in our mature trees allowing our students to observe and monitor breeding native birds including the Grass Parrot, Eastern Rosella, Currawong, Honey Eaters, other species and, we are hoping to attract rare birds such as the Swift Parrot to our playground.

Parents and carers will also have the opportunity to attend Mathematics workshops over two evenings as our staff are currently focusing on place value and whole number as an area of interest and improvement across Kindergarten to Year 6 numeracy.

Forbes North is also celebrating Education Week in August with a massive book sale combining the love of reading and the annual book week celebrations around the theme ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’. Education changes lives and every student at Forbes North will have the opportunity to proudly celebrate public education in the coming weeks.

The exciting news is that David Rowden and the Omega Ensemble will perform at Cooke Park Pavilion tomorrow, 23rd July at 2pm (7pm cancelled).

This is a wonderful opportunity to see David, one of Australia’s finest clarinetists. The concert is an initiative by Music in the Regions. The Omega Ensemble are also playing in Forbes tonight at 7pm at the Forbes Town Hall. Tickets available at musicintheregions.com

If our community wants to hear live performances such as community band music and touring ensembles, we need to be in the audience to support the musicians, and to sustain music in our community. We need to give school students and community members the opportunity to learn or take up an instrument again – there are many people who would like to.

The Parkes Shire Concert Band (PSCB) rehearsals are every Tuesday during school term from 6:30 to 7pm for learners and those picking up the instrument again. New members always welcome. The main band’s rehearsal time is from 7 – 9pm in the Music Room above the Pool Complex in Dalton Street. For further information contact Duncan Clement, PSCB Music Director on email duncanclement@hotmail.com or his mobile 0405 035 164.

Kardashian Famous Kate Kelly

July 22, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Rebecca Wilson with her favourite painting of Kate called Carte De Visite. Calling cards, or Carte De Visite, were all the rage from France from the 1860s. An original calling card of Kate’s was listed for auction for $5,000 – $8,000 in recent years, and showed Kate in her riding habit. (The Kate Kelly Exhibition is on at the Coventry Room until 6th August.)

Many people might only know her as the little sister of Australia’s infamous bushranger Ned Kelly, but Kate Kelly was incredibly famous in her day.

“Kate was absolutely Kardashian famous! Everybody knew who Kate Kelly was and by 1882 she had her own wax replica on display at the wax works that were quite popular in those days.”

Artist and former Forbes resident Rebecca Wilson entertained the audience with some incredible stories about Kate’s life at the opening of her exhibition in Parkes last Friday.

Rebecca spent ten years researching the life of Kate after a conversation over Christmas lunch. “I was thinking why don’t I know these stories, and that set me off on an investigation of over 10 years.”

As a painter, she was drawn to Kate’s story because of the Forbes connection, but also because it was such a visual story. “I wanted to paint her story, but first had to do research.”

Rebecca discovered a woman who was extremely loyal to her family and friends. “She was feisty, adventurous, brave, intelligent, and a highly skilled horse woman. It was important for me that more people learn about Kate’s story and how she was involved in a very important part of Australian history.”

Rebecca discovered so many impressive things about Kate and all the adversaries she had to deal with until the tragedy of her death in Forbes. She was only 14 or 15 when she was riding through the bush as a decoy for the Kelly gang, delivering messages, getting supplies and information to help the gang stay at large. She ended up witnessing the Glenrowan siege in 1880 when her brother and two friends were killed and Ned was captured.

She campaigned and raised 30,000 signatures to try and spare Ned’s life and even met with the Governor when she was only 17.It was a showman called Flashjack Donovan who contributed to her fame whenhe convinced Kate and her brother Jimto tour with him across regional Victoria,South Australia, and up to Sydney. Thousands attended their performances, but thepolice could not stand it so they shut themdown.

Eventually the fame and ridicule she received in the press, led to her wanting to escape Victoria, and she ended up in Forbes at age 22 under the alias of Ada Hennessey in 1885 and worked as a domestic servant. She married, had six children and was found dead in the lagoon on the outskirts of Forbes at the age of 35, perhaps suffering from peri-natal depression.

Rebecca not only created a beautiful cohesive body of work about Kate, but also wrote a book telling her story. “The incredible and amazing story of Kate Kelly is a story you can’t not know as it has a lot of relevance for us now.

“In a way our society has changed, but there are still many of those fundamental things that haven’t changed. We are still struggling for more rights and recognition for women, there’s still poverty, and a class structure.”

Rebecca said while she was doing the research she had a sense of real gratitude to all the women who have gone before us. “They’ve made my life a lot easier and we should not forget that as they worked really hard. And I hope our modern generation will be leaving some kind of legacy and be improving things for the next generation too.”
