Cooking Up A Storm On Golf Course

February 2, 2017 By Maggi Barnard

Veteran golfer Graham Cooke bounced back to his brilliant best when he took out Saturday’s 3rd round of the BWR Accountants and Advisors Summer competition. In very hot conditions Cooke, playing off a 31 handicap, set up the victory with a brilliant front 9 holes that saw him return a great 23 points or the equivalent of 5 shots under his handicap to record his first victory in nearly six months.

Runner-up was Lindsay Elliott who recorded 42 points, just one shot ahead of third place Frankie Cock. She continued her brilliant form in returning a great 5 under handicap score of 41 points.

Ball winners on Saturday were 42 Lindsay Elliott, 41 Frankie Cock, 39 Robert Hey, Mitch McGlashan and Margaret Hogan, 38 Rod Kiley, Laurie Wakefield, Tom Medcalf, Tim Baker, Colleen Flynn and Bob Barter and surviving the countback on 37 was Cathy Kelly.

The Nearest the Pin jackpot on the Idlerite Tyrepower 1st hole was not won, however Richard Hutchison claimed 20% of the jackpot and won 16 balls. The other Nearest the Pin awards saw Steve Simpson clean up on the Griffins
Leading Edge 4th hole. This shot allowed Simpson to claim the Money Hole award too. On the Dirt Doctor Landscaping 6th hole, Mitch McGlashan got the first of a double. His second award came on the difficult Westlime-sponsored 15th hole, while on the Harvey Norman 11th hole it was Lindsay Elliott who got to celebrate.

The day’s final two awards, the Nearest the Pins in two shots on the Parkes Ready Mixed Concrete 9th hole and the PJL Groups 18th hole, saw Mark Job and Lindsay Elliott take the honours.

Dixon And Hando Record Doubles

December 8, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Doubles by Peter Dixon and Cody Hando were the highlights of last Saturday’s final Telescope Tyres & Batteries Monthly Medal for the year. In taking out the A Grade double Dixon had to survive a countback over Cameron
Butler on 72, however in the Handicap section for the PJL Group’s trophy it was all plain sailing as Dixon returned a solid 68 nett edging out Wayne Butler on countback.

In the minor grades Colin Barker returned to the winners podium, while Ryan Thornberry edged out Barker on countback to take the Handicap section with 72 nett. In the C Grade it was all Cody Hando as he returned an impressive 86 from his 23 handicap to also take the double with the day’s best nett score of 63. The Veterans medal was won by Richard Hamilton with a 69 nett, while in the Ladies section Lyn Davison with 72 nett, won by two shots.

The day’s final award, the Griffins Leading Edge Putting competition, saw Cameron Butler successful with just 21 putts – the lowest number of putts recorded by a player since the inception of the competition. Ball winners from Saturday’s round saw Dave Harwood top the list with a 65 nett. He was followed by 68 Ron Hetherington and Wayne Butler, 69 Richard Hamilton and Rod Kiley, 70 Gordon Christie, 71 Peter Rowe, Mark Kelly and Phil Bishop, while the remaining three balls went to Tim Lasserre, Cameron Butler and Phil Barnard all on 72 nett.

Australian Cricketer Attracts Large Crowd At Autism Golf Day

November 24, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Former Australian test cricketer Jeff Thomson proved a big attraction for players and guests at Sunday’s fundraising day sponsored by John Holland Construction. The 3 Person Ambrose event was in aid of the Central West Autism Awareness & Special Needs Awareness Group. Significant funds were raised to enable the organisation to erect ten Buddy Benches at schools in Parkes, Forbes and Peak Hill, as well as a bus shelter and a new 22-seater bus with specialty equipment fitted for wheelchair use for school outings.

In his address to the large crowd Jeff Thomson had a lot to say about the current system of team selections and its administration. He accepted questions from the crowd and proved to be a great ambassador for the game. However on the golf course it was the team of Matthew Duffy, Scott Hendry and Tim Magill who dominated play as they returned an excellent round of five under par 66 for a nett 54 ½ to finish nearly three shots ahead of the field.

The runners-up team consisted of Michael Dumesny, Mark Dwyer and John Davies on 57 1/6 nett, and in third place
it was Phil Smith, Paul Murray and Matt Spedding on 58 nett. The much sought after Bradman’s award saw the schoolteachers team of Sherree Rosser, Judy Elliott and Elaine Bright record a narrow victory. The Nearest the Pin awards saw Andrew Huntly take out the 1st hole at 585cm, Michael Hunt the 4th hole at 55cm, Jack Murray the 6th hole at 359cm, Luke Cross the 11th hole at 93cm and on the final Par 3 the 15th, it was Michael Dumesny who excelled at 300cm.

The Long Drive competition was won by Nathan Munday at close to 300m on the 8th hole. The general consensus was that all players enjoyed the day’s golf and they were full of praise for the sponsors and the event organisers, in particular the efforts of Jodie Goonrey and David Whitfield. Tomorrow members will contest an 18 hole Stableford for the Court Press trophy, while the Ladies will also contest an 18 hole Stableford competition for a Club trophy.

Green Takes Pybar

November 17, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

John Green snared his first Pybar Handicap Challenge played in strong westerly winds on Sunday. One of the favourites Ian Phipps was the first of the field of 19 players to succumb on the 1st hole after a chip off with Brian Hogan. Chip Offs were to be the order on the majority of the first nine holes as Warren Blatch, Victor Gaidzionis, Brian Hogan, Robert Cheney, Wayne Butler, Bernie McCabe, Lachlan Buesnell and Cameron Butler found themselves looking on by the half way mark.

After lunch the remaining ten players ventured out with one aim to survive. An errant second shot by Michael Smith saw him go out, and on the Par 3, 11th hole defending titleholder, Ross Smith found the green side bunker. Mark Kelly was next to go as he floundered on the Par 4, 12th hole and on the Par 5, 13th hole the trees on left ended the Colin Barker run. After several near escapes Chris Goodies’ luck deserted him at the 14th hole in a chip off with Denis
Howard. Howard’s luck ran out on the Par 15th hole as he ran up a double bogey.

With just 3 holes remaining it was down to four players: last minute substitution, John Green, Phil Barnard, Joey Van Opynen and David Stevenson. The sledging started in earnest and it was Stevenson who was first to be eliminated in a three way chip off. At the 17th event favourite Joey Van Opynen inexplicitly missed a short putt that was to end his hopes. This left Barnard and Green to battle it out on the short Par 4, 18th hole and after both players recorded solid pars they faced a daunting chip off that saw Green come out tops. Event sponsor Paul Rouse of Pybar Mining congratulated both players on their success.

Australian cricketer Jeff Thomson will be the special guest at Sunday’s 3 Person Ambrose fundraising event for the Central West Autism Awareness & Special Needs Awareness Group hosted by John Holland Construction Contractors. The day starts at 10am with an entry fee of $40 per team player including lunch. A charity auction will be held at the end of the day. Items include various sports memorabilia.

Pybar Mining Handicap Has Interesting Field

November 11, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

The 12th annual Pybar Mining Handicap Golf Shootout on Sunday has a majority field who have never contested this type of event. This will give the old heads plenty of leverage. The logical favourite appears to be the tried and tested Joey Van Opynen, a player who has encountered plenty of tough players in his day.

With the Cunninghams IGA Scratch Shoot under his belt from earlier in the year, Joey is aiming to be the first member to win both the scratch and handicap sections. His major opposition appears to be renowned fighter, big game player and one of the club’s most consistent putters Ian Phipps, while the tough and experienced Chris Goodie will be in the firing line too. The defending titleholder Ross Smith will find this a tougher field. Number 1 qualifier
Brian L. Hogan has finally achieved his aim in qualifying.

Players had to qualify from the six designated rounds that ultimately saw the leading 19 players reach the play off final. The final will start at 9am with one player eliminated at each hole – handicaps play a big part. If more than one player records the worst net score on a hole those players then contest a chip off that determines who stays or who goes and it is the player who finishes furthest from the nominated target who departs.

Players will enjoy a delicious sit down meal, courtesy of Pybar Mining, after the initial nine holes.

Golfers Win First Championship

October 20, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

foursomes-championships-002

Peter Dixon and John Green recorded a double win on Sunday when they took out their fifth Men’s Foursomes Championship as well as the Dixon Physiotherapy Handicap section. The triumphant pair first won the championship in 2007 and have had further success on another three occasions. They will travel to Campbelltown to tackle the NSW Men’s Foursomes Championships in November.

Runners-up were Cameron Butler and Lachlan Buesnell who finished on 161, some 8 shots behind the victors.
In the consolation division Tony Hendry and Peter Bristol spreadeagled the field to take their first championship title by 10 shots from Michael Smith and Wayne Parker. Like the winners they also had success in the handicap section.

The Ladies Foursomes Championships also on Sunday saw sisters Lynne Guise and Kaye Jones blitz the field in convincing fashion with Cherrie Phillips and Glynis Conroy in the runner-up position. Consolation winners Colleen Staples and Dawn Wakefield proved too consistent in taking out their inaugural championship event with Lesley Fisher and Denise Charlton filling the runner-up position.

Both Guise and Jones, and Staples and Wakefield also snared the events handicap divisions which were sponsored by Network Video and Parkes Betta Home Living.

Last Championship Event

October 13, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

The final major golf championship event of the year for both the men and ladies will be contested this Sunday. The men play the final round of the Dixon Physiotherapy sponsored 36 hole titles in both the championship and consolation sections, while the ladies play their 27 hole event in the same sections with titles sponsored by Betta Home Living and Network Video.

The men already played the first round last weekend. Peter Dixon and John Green are halfway leaders after a superb opening round of 4 over par 75. They enjoy a 3 shot lead over Phil Barnard and Denis Howard, while Lachlan Buesnell and Cameron Butler are a further shot away. In the Consolation Section, Tony Hendry and Peter Bristol lead Michael Smith and Wayne Parker by 6 shots and appear likely to win their first title.

In the Ladies 27 hole Foursomes both divisions will have the defending champions attempting to retain their mantle.
In the Championship section, defending titleholders sisters Lynne Guise and Kaye Jones will be hard to toss with the major challengers being reigning Club Champion Cherrie Phillips and Glynis Conroy. In the Network Video Consolation section a period of inactivity by the reigning titleholders Judy McCabe and Leone Stevenson
could haunt them despite the fact that they received a favourable draw. Consistency will pave the way for Colleen Staples and Dawn Wakefield to take the title.

Dry Weather Good For Golf

October 6, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

We finally had a dry weekend that allowed members of the Parkes Golf Club to shed the cobwebs off their golf clubs and prepare for some competition golf. The men contested an 18 hole 2 Man Team Stableford last Saturday for trophies put up by members Michael Craft and Peter Dixon. Holes 1 to 6 were played as a Best Ball, holes 7 to 12 as Aggregate and the final 6 holes as a Mutliplier. The last 6 holes proved crucial as Michael Dellaca and Scott Mann edged out Matthew Swetland and Rod Kiley on a countback after both pairs returned excellent scores of 61.

In the Individual event it was plain sailing for Shen Taranto who recorded the day’s best nett score of 39 points.
Ball Winners on the day went to 61 Matt Swetland and Rod Kiley, 58 Mitch McGlashan and Cameron Butler, 53 Neil
and Cameron McMillan and on 52 were Marty Woods and Max Haley. Only a small contingent of ladies contested
an 18 Hole Stableford round for the Cherrie Phillips trophy. Junior Kasey Fay-Rice spread-eagled the field with a convincing 7 point victory as she returned a great 35 points.

Ball winners went to Margaret Hogan on 28 points and Kaye Jones with 27. The first round of the Dixon Physiotherapy  36 Hole Members Club Foursomes Championships will be played on Sunday.

Parkes Golf Open

September 15, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes will welcome representatives from all across the state as they converge on the town this weekend to compete in the annual SCT Parkes Open Golf Tournament. The tournament will host 156 players from 40 clubs, with over a third of players off handicaps of eight or less – making it the strongest field in the event’s 42 year history.

Parkes Golf Club Captain and Tournament Director, Paul Thomas said the strength and ability of the players has forced officials to change the A Grade field from its normal 10 handicap to the lower limit of eight. “The calibre of players attending this year’s event is outstanding. We are really looking forward to seeing some of the State’s and Western area’s premier golfers in action.

“While country players have dominated the event over its 42 years, there will be some tough competition from the metropolitan clubs,” Paul said. Mudgee golfer Mark Hale will start as the favourite, slightly ahead of Duntryleague’s
Robert Payne and another Mudgee aspirant, Andrew Best.

Since 1981, the SCT Logistics Parkes Open entrants have competed for the Fred Funnell Memorial trophy, whilst the Keith Clarke Memorial trophy is presented to the leading scratch player in the veterans division. This year the Club will once again honour the late John “Gidgie” Leister with players from all grades competing for the John Leister Memorial Trophy for the best handicap score over the initial 18 holes.

Busy Time For Golfers

September 8, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

As last weekend’s golf was washed out, the rest of the month promises to be very busy starting with the Bob Smith Memorial Golf Day tomorrow for men and women, while the rescheduled Pybar Handicap Challenge final will take place on Sunday.

The following week, the annual SCT Logistics Parkes Open Tournament takes place and on Saturday, 24th September the men get to play the washed out Telescope Tyres & Batteries September Monthly Medals sponsored by Tony Williams Chartered Accountants. The Ladies will play a 4 Ball Multiplier for Kay Jones trophies on the same weekend, and rounding out September, commencing on Monday 26th, is the Atlas Copco Australia Parkes Veterans Week of Golf.

Members are reminded of the Special General Meeting starting at 5.30pm tomorrow for the election of a new Club President after the unfortunate resignation of Ross Smith from the position. Members are urged to attend to celebrate the appointment of a new President.

The Club will conduct a Rules Night, in conjunction with Golf NSW, on Wednesday, 14th September at 6.30pm to discuss rules that affect the every day golfer. Bookings are required.

Tomorrow the men and women will contest an 18 hole 2Ball Medley Stableford with 9 and 18 hole individual events to be run in conjunction. The day will be in honor of the late R.L. (Bob) Smith with Michael Smith and family members sponsoring the day. The Pybar Handicap Challenge is on Sunday at 9am. The match committee have ruled that players who accepted for last weekend will have the first opportunity to play, but they must confirm to the Club Captain on 0427 624 683 by 5pm today.
