Grand Opening For New Pet Shop On Saturday

The management team at PETstock Country Parkes are Ainsley Newton, Ellie Littlewood and Shirilee Jackson with some of their favourite pets.

PETstock Country Parkes is the first PETstock Country branded store in NSW, and tomorrow is the grand opening with a family fun day from 10am to 2pm at 138 Clarinda Street.

“The whole community is invited to come and enjoy a free coffee from The Fat Parcel, watch the reptile show and display by Kym, the Reptile Man, support the charity barbeque run by Parkes Rescue and Rehoming and enjoy the 20% off sale storewide,” said Ellie Littlewood of the management team. The local station 2PK/RokFM will be live streaming from the store.

PETstock Country Parkes keeps a wide range of products for all pets from your horse to your dog, cat, bird, fish, reptile, rabbit or guinea pig.

According to another management team member Shirilee Jackson all pets’ needs are catered for with a huge selection of pet products including flea, tick and worming treatments, premium dog and cat food ranges, horse ranges and rural supplies.

The Parkes store has already established a working relationship with Parkes Rescue and Rehoming and adopt cats out in store on their behalf.

At the moment virtual puppy training is on offer online with a trainer with 20 years’ experience. “We are working towards opening a puppy school soon,” said Shirilee.

“We do not only focus on pets, but also cater for hobby farms and bigger farms with supplies of rural agricultural products like fencing and troughs,” said Ainsley Newton of the management team.

She said the store also had a wide range of equine products including locally sourced hay and chaff.

The management team of three supported by a casual staff complement of five are all locals with a wide range of knowledge of pets and local conditions. The store is open seven days a week.

Better Together

This week is National Volunteer Week and a chance for all of us to celebrate and recognise the vital work of volunteers and to say thank you. Volunteers do a lot of work behind the scenes that is vital to the functioning of groups and organisations that serve our community for its betterment.

At Vinnies in Parkes the female volunteers are always in the front helping out customers, but there is also a team at the back doing some vital work. Two of the behind-the-scenes volunteers are Greg Cregan and John Niddrie.

They do a lot of after hours work and on public holidays being responsible for emptying out the donation bins. “We also sort all the items, and pick up and drop off items to people,” said Greg.

Greg has been doing it for about six years, and John joined around 12 months ago. “It is all about helping people out and the comradeship. We all get along really well working here.”

Peak Hill Arts & Crafts Celebrated Over June Long Weekend

The historic and recently renovated Carrington Hotel in Peak Hill is one of two main venues for the 49th Annual Arts & Crafts Exhibition over the June long weekend.

The long weekend in June is going to be huge in Peak Hill as the 49th Annual Arts and Craft Exhibition is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet.

With the two main venues at the Peak Hill Leisure Centre and The Carrington at full capacity the event is spilling over to Peak Hill Country Crafts for exhibitors, while other shops in the main street will be open for the weekend as well on 11th and 12th June from 9:30am to 4pm.

Long-time Peak Hill resident May Chandler, who is well into her 90s and continues to crochet, cross-stitch and make cards, will share her story as the guest speaker at the official opening on Friday, 10th June at 6pm at the Leisure Centre. There will be a $5 fee for CanAssist catering.

“The exhibition committee are thrilled to offer artisan and modern contemporary style arts and craft at this year’s exhibition,” said Judi Unger, Secretary of Peak Hill Leisure Centre. “Artisan arts and crafts demonstrations and static displays include Aboriginal Art, spinning, weaving, loom work, macrame and patchwork, and contemporary style demonstrations highlights acrylic painting workshop, machine embroidered reading cushions, metal work design resin jewellery and lampshade workshops.”

The Leisure Centre will showcase members’ work created in art and craft groups throughout the year, and an opportunity to vote for the most popular work in The People’s Choice award.

The Carrington building is an ornate, rustic venue which will feature artworks from the Parkes Art Group, artist-in-residence Leanne Hamblin, mosaic displays, local honey, knitting, sewing, embroidery, jewellery, candles, plants, artwork, sewing, scrapbooking, dolls and card-making.

Peak Hill Country Crafts also known as the Open Cut Gallery, is a great addition this year’s event as it is already stocked with handmade and home made products created by members of the local community and surrounding district.

Celebrate With Endeavour Dragons This Sunday

Parkes Dragon Boat Club is celebrating their fourth anniversary on Sunday and is inviting the Parkes community to enjoy the day with them.

The day’s program will officially start at 9:30am with Welcome to Country and the fun will continue until the great raffle draw around 2pm.

In between there will be an all-day sausage sizzle, coffee van, some great on-water novelty events which will be fun to watch, and a 6km race. There will also be a free come-and-try for anyone over 12 interested in hopping in the dragon boat to learn what paddling is all about.

If you want to support the club purchasing raffle tickets, or food and drink, be sure to take cash on the day as there is no eft-pos service at the lake.

‘Tie A Yellow Ribbon…’

Yellow ribbons have become synonymous with National Road Safety Week which starts on Sunday.

Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils will be getting behind this initiative with a range of activities to help raise awareness of road safety as they’ve done since 2017. This includes honouring the memory of the 1,200 lives lost and more than 44,000 seriously injured on Australian roads each year.

“Yellow ribbons will be displayed all across the country to remember those we have lost on the roads and to remind us to drive safely,” said Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer Melanie Suitor.

Members of the public are encouraged to pick up a vehicle sticker and/or lapel ribbon for free from Council’s administration office, while the Councils’ fleet and staff will display yellow ribbons during the week.

The monument on Memorial Hill and the Sir Henry Parkes statue will be lit in yellow.

Craig Is Our First Tradie Of The Month!

Flowers For Mother’s Day

Show your love and appreciation for your mother and support a local initiative to raise funds for a charity.

Parkes resident Marion Unger will be selling flowers from her garden on the front lawn of the Lutheran Church in Currajong Street (opposite Parkes Public School) from 8:30am tomorrow, Saturday. Her bunches start from $5 for the smallest size. The bunches of chrysanthemums, the traditional Mother’s Day flower, come mostly from Marion’s garden. She will be donating the money to a children’s ministry in Cambodia. She has attached a small card with information about the ministry to every bunch. Fantastic Fundraiser For Prostate Cancer

Parkes Bowling & Sports Club hosted a charity day in support of the Prostate Cancer Council of Australia on Sunday with 56 bowlers playing two games of pairs, each of 15 ends, with a break between games for a barbeque lunch.

Thanks to the generosity of our local businesses, there were a lots of prizes with the winners drawn ‘out of a hat’ rather than on results. Big thanks to our 45 sponsors with the major ones Steve Magill Earthmoving, Forbes Central Butchery, French Taste Bakery and White Bridge Communications.

Everyone did a great job to make the day a success with a donation of over $2,000 to the Prostate Cancer Council.

Club Championships – Major Pairs Championship: Warwick Parker and Tom Furey played Martin Tighe and Jo Simpson on Saturday. Martin and Jo were in the match up to the 16th end but then Warwick and Tom took control and ran out winners 31 – 11.

Major Triples Championship: In what was a closer game than the scores may indicate Dave Reilly, Nathan Reynolds and Gary McPhee took the early lead against Guy Ellery, Wilbur Harris and Steve Turner and never gave up the lead before winning the match 23-17.

Social Bowls: The wet weather meant no social bowls were played on Thursday and on Saturday only one match was played. Tony Riordan, Bob Freeman and Rob Irving had the better of the early ends to lead John Ward, Trevor Harvey and Mike Simpson 19 – 6 after 14 ends. The next five ends were won by Team Ward and with two ends to play the lead had been cut to 19-18. However, Team Ward could not sustain their run and went down 19-20.

250 Rally Cars Overnight In Trundle

A total of 250 cars worth less than $1,000 will take part in this year’s Shitbox Rally covering 3,600km and passing through Forbes tomorrow afternoon.

The Central West will see the 250 cars taking part in this year’s Shitbox Rally tomorrow when the 500 participants will pass through Forbes in the afternoon on their way to Trundle where they will overnight.

The teams of two will leave Wollongong on Saturday, 7th May in cars worth less than $1,000 (aka shitboxes) and travel 3,600km to cross the finish line seven days later in Mackay, Queensland. The rally is the largest independent fundraiser for the Cancer Council with over $30 million raised since the rallies began. The $2 million target for this rally is well in sight with current fundraising totals at over $1.7 million.

James Freeman who founded Box Rallies (Shitbox and Mystery Box Rally) after losing both of his parents to cancer within 12 months of each other said: “Shitbox Rally is not a race, but a reward for fundraising efforts. This is a chance to explore Australia, drawing teams from around the country to help achieve the extraordinary. Autumn 2022 will be another incredible rally starting for the first time in Wollongong and finishing in Mackay. As with all rallies though, the route will be on the roads less travelled as we make our way into the Outback.

The impact of COVID in 2020 and 2021 has made it particularly difficult for teams to fundraise and Box Rallies has seen its expected fundraising total for the period, cut by as much as $7.2 million from Cancer Research. Rallies are the reward for raising vital funds for cancer research but when the reward is unable to take place, the fundraising slows considerably.

The rally cars are expected to go through Forbes from around 4pm and can be spread out over two to three hours. Arrival time in Trundle is from 5pm.
