Two More Ambassadors

May 21, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

At the ceremony last week were (L-R) Debbie Gould
(Parkes Library), Adelaide Terry, Cr Pat Smith, Adrian Day and Emma Brown (Parkes Library).

Two students from Holy Family were inducted as library ambassadors last week to join the seven other ambassadors from four primary schools in Parkes.

Year 5 students Adelaide Terry and Adrian Day received their library badges from Cr Pat Smith at a special ceremony.

“I love books and want everybody else to love them too,” said Adelaide when asked why she wanted to become an ambassador.

For Adrian, who is also an avid reader, the most important task as an ambassador would be to keep students at his school informed about events and activities at the library.

CanAssist Search Is On For New Home And More Volunteers

May 21, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Some of the CanAssist volunteers helping out in the furniture pavilion this week were (L-R) Barry Woodhouse, Bob Strick-land, Eric Davies, John Francis Kelly and Anthony Burke. They would love to see more men join them as volunteers.

The widely popular CanAssist garage sales are looking for a new home.

The Parkes Showground Land Manager made the difficult decision last week to demolish the main pavilion where a large part of the garage sale items have been housed for about five years.

CanAssist volunteers this week moved some items across to the Feature pavilion next to where the furniture garage sale items are stored. All the items will have to be moved in time for the Parkes Show in August this year.

Finding a new home of about 1,000m² for the monthly garage sale with adequate parking and ablution facilities, is posing a major challenge to the CanAssist committee.

The monthly event not only attract bargain hunters from all over the region, but also helps to boost CanAssist’s funds significantly. “We would not be able to help people in Parkes to the extent that we do without these funds,” said President of CanAssist Parkes, Sylvia Glendenning.

The garage sales had just come back as a regular event following the COVID lock-down and the super cell event in January which flooded the main pavilion, when the news of the demolition came through. Sylvie said some suggestions of possible new venues had been made and they were making a list to evaluate all of them. Bob Strickland, who volunteers with about nine other men to handle the furniture side of the sales, said the second dilemma for CanAssist was a shortage of helpers. “We are all getting older, and we need new blood.”

Volunteers help to pick up, deliver and sort items, arrange the furniture for display and do some maintenance.

“We are here Thursday to Saturday from 8:30am to 12:30pm and enjoy morning tea together. We have become such good friends, that some of us practically live here!”

Old Cars, Rich History

May 21, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

The 1909 N.A.G. currently being restored by the Parkes Antique Motor Club.

The Parkes Antique Motor Club display last Sunday was a great success with 42 heritage cars ranging from 1926 to 1991. The day was in celebration of Australia’s National Motoring Heritage and 20 members from Orange District Antique Motor Club, 19 from Dubbo and some members of other clubs joined with Parkes for the day.

In recognition of Australia’s rich motoring heritage, more than half the vehicles were made or assembled in Australia. In addition to well-known models from Holden, Ford, Chrysler and Morris, there were also Vauxhalls, Volkswagens and Chevrolets and a 1937 Cadillac sedan.

The proud owners were on hand to talk about their prized pos-sessions to about 500 people who took time to visit the display. The day also saw the first public showing of the Parkes Club’s current restoration project, a 1909 N.A.G., which was used in Parkes by the Plowman family over a century ago. There are very few of these vehicles remaining in the world, and the club needs to be very particular about the detail and quality of its restoration project.

$50 Million To Combat Mice Plague

May 21, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Farmers will receive free grain treatment under a new package to combat the mice plague.

The NSW Government has announced a $50 million package for households, local businesses and farmers to help combat the mice plague currently impacting regional NSW.

NSW Upper House MP, Sam Farraway said communities right across the Central West and Western NSW had done it tough off the back of drought, bushfires and floods. “This mice plague is devastating communities who are already suffering.

“I have received a lot of feedback from communities that we needed to act on this mice plague as this infestation runs deep through the community.”

Households will be able to apply for rebates of up to $500 and small businesses will be eligible to claim up to $1,000 through Service NSW.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said these rebates would help small businesses and households meet the cost of purchasing baits, and grain treatment would be available for impacted farmers free of charge.

“We know the financial pressure this mice plague is putting on farmers and household budgets. We have heard the concerns and we are acting on them,” said the deputy premier.

“The NSW Government will establish grain treatment facilities at specified locations across rural and regional NSW for farmers to have their grain treated free of charge and we will provide rebates to small businesses and households through Service NSW to help meet the cost of buying bait.

“I am also forming an advisory committee to ensure everyone has access to expert advice, including the latest hot spots, health and food safety advice, information for vets and guidance for keeping children and animals safe.”

Other steps include a rapid move by the NSW Government to seek the necessary approvals for the use of bromadiolone in NSW and expanded workshops on the best eradication strategies. For more information go to www.nsw.gov.au/mice.

Aviation Museum Spreads Its Wings

May 21, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Visiting the HARS Parkes Aviation Museum at the Parkes Airport is a good family outing on a Sunday.

The history of flying is colourful and adventurous and the HARS Parkes Aviation Museum’s growing collection is worth a visit for young and old.

The museum is part of the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS), a voluntary not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation of aircraft and artefacts that are significant to Australian aviation history whether military or civilian.

The society was founded in the mid-1960s with one flying aircraft and a number of WW2 Beaufighter airframes, and now has over 100 aircraft and around 30 that fly or are under restoration to fly.

The HARS has had a presence in Parkes from 1975 with our spares stored in the dry climate of the inland. Around 10 years ago CASA decided to widen the runway and the Council issued us with an eviction notice as the hangar had to be demolished.

Later CASA and Council rescinded the eviction and we decided to remain and develop a static museum of aircraft and artefacts that could be displayed in the Central West.

During the past five years we have partnered with Parkes High School to bring in Year 10 and 11 students to increase their opportunities for future employment by imparting some knowledge and skills that will help them later in the work place.

The students learn surface preparation, spray and roller painting, some mechanical and carpentry skills and become part of a team working together ensuring safe practices while using tools and construction equipment.

Many of the students have gone on to worthwhile careers after their time with the museum, while the museum has benefitted by the application of their skills.

The museum is open on Thursdays and Sundays from 9:30am to 3:30pm. More volunteers are being sought to act as tour guides or as hands on restorers. The aircraft of the museum are non-flying and restoration work does not require aviation licensed volunteers. If you are interested, call Mike on 0418 473 175.

Give Me Some Space

May 21, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

ADVENTURES IN SPACE… Some of the children who attended a very special National Simultaneous Storytime at Parkes Library on Wednesday.

“Una dreams of a life in Space. Life on Earth is just so so-so. But how will she get there? And will she complete her mission to discover life in Space? And did she remember to feed Neil the goldfish?”

Wednesday’s celebration of National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) held special significance for children in Parkes as this year’s book called “Give me some space’ by Philip Bunting was broadcast ‘live’ from The Dish with Cr Bill Jayet as the reader.

While the national program included an intergalactic experience with the NSS book being read by the astronaut Dr Shannon Walker from the International Space Station, the Parkes Library gave its celebration a very special local flavour incorporating the Parkes Radio Telescope into its program.

The children attending the event were invited to dress up in a space theme, and they sat down in the Conventry Room to see the broadcast of Cr Bill reading the book in front of The Dish.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

The annual event forms part of Library and Information Week, and the Parkes Library continued the space theme with John Sarkissian, Operations Scientist at the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope, giving two talks yesterday, and the famous Parkes movie ‘The Dish’ being shown today at 6pm.

Hundreds At Squash Event

May 21, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Services Squash Centre is hosting the Dave Fuller Intertown Teams Squash event this weekend in Parkes and Forbes. The event is in memory of squash identity Dave Fuller, who ran the intertown squash event for around 40 years and passed away last year after a long fight with cancer.

This year’s tournament will be one of the biggest in the event’s history with almost 200 players from around NSW and ACT attending, with the Parkes club having to hire the Forbes courts to accommodate the numbers.

Dave’s son is travelling up from Wyong, while Professional Squash Tour player David Clegg will come from Sydney. Australian Masters squash and cricket player Peter Bastow and local current National Under 11 Champion Henry Kross will also be playing.
