Wind In Their Hair

April 1, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

A community initiative that started in Denmark might make its way to Parkes in the near future offering free bike rides to the elderly and less abled residents.

Cycling Without Age was established in 2012 in Copenhagen as a volunteer organisation.

A community committee has been formed in Parkes to raise the finances to purchase a specialised bicycle, called a trishaw, which will be used to take residents of nursing and residential homes out to get some wind in their hair.

Bike East from Sydney, who have several trishaws which they take to the villages in the eastern suburbs, will be bringing one from 9th to 11th April to Parkes to introduce the trishaw to the community.

On the Friday it will be in the shopping centre and then at each of the three residential villages in Parkes taking some of the residents out for their first ride.

Friday evening there will be an information meeting at the Parkes Services Club, and Saturday morning future riders will receive some instruction in PAC Park. A facebook page has been created called Cycling Without Age Parkes.

Be Seen @ Wear Red Day

April 1, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Last Thursday was Wear Red Day to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House in Orange – a home away from home for sick kids and their families. Neighbourhood Central supported the day by decorating their receptions desk, staff wore red and provided a ‘red morning tea’ with donations to be part of it, and they raffled a lolly jar.

Receptionist at Neighbourhood Central, Emily Harper.

Neighbourhood Central staff enjoying the ‘red morning tea’ are (L-R) Tanya Job, Rowen Pearce, Paige Duncan, Rachel Brown, Emily Harper, Amanda Corcoran, Zarna Gould, Ruth Barnes, Christie Green and Sharon Scott.

The ‘red morning tea’ saw an interesting combination of nibbles and bites.

Editor’s Note

April 1, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Life is slowly getting back to some form of normality as more restrictions are being lifted with many activities and events resuming. The downtime last year through COVID has reminded us just how important our connections are with friends and family, and brought a new sense of awareness to what we value in our lives.

Over recent weeks we’ve had several organisations calling for more volunteers in our community. And when we asked current volunteers what they enjoy about it, most of them answered how much joy the connection and interaction with others brought them.

Volunteering is not only an act of kindness, but can also be very rewarding in return. If you are keen to make a change in your life for the better, why not consider doing some voluntary work.

Happy Easter everyone and stay safe

After a full year of silence the Parkes Community Choir will be back with some joyous singing on Thursday, 22nd April.

Voices Rejoice: There is great excitement in the air for the restart of the Parkes Community Choir. It has been a whole year since the choir was silenced because of COVID-19 making it a long and very difficult time for some members. The first meeting will be on Thursday, 22nd April from 7 – 8:30pm at the Parkes Community Centre, Rose Street. The choir welcomes anyone who loves to sing and it is free!

Grab A Free Cuppa: If you’re travelling this Easter in regional NSW, make sure you check out freecuppa.com.au, plan your trip, have regular breaks and collect your free cuppa at one of more than 100 participating businesses. Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer Melanie Suitor said drivers were entitled to a free cuppa at participating businesses if they were more than 100km away from home. “Drivers claiming a free cuppa can also go into the draw to win fuel vouchers, travel vouchers or a coffee machine, with a total prize pool of $1,200. Drivers can avoid fatigue crashes by recognising the early warning signs – yawning, tired eyes, restlessness, poor concentration, drowsiness, daydreaming, head nodding, oversteering, slow reactions and boredom.

Dine & Discover: Parkes residents can now apply for their Dine & Discover vouchers online. The NSW Government launched Dine & Discover NSW to encourage the community to get out and about and support dining, arts and tourism businesses. Every NSW resident aged 18 and over is eligible for four $25 vouchers.

Five Days Of Double Demerits: Double demerits will be in place for five days over the Easter holiday period from 1st April to 5th April inclusive. Double demerit points will apply for all speeding, seatbelt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences. Drivers getting caught illegally using their phones during a double demerit period will be hit with a $349 fine and 10 demerits. Parkes Highway Patrol Sergeant Martin Ling is encouraging all road users to pay attention to road conditions and allow plenty of travel time. “Despite seatbelts being legal since the early 1970s, complacency seems to have crept in and not wearing a seatbelt has been a factor involved in the last three fatal crashes on our local roads. There will be more Police on the roads and therefore more chance of getting caught,” Sergeant Ling said.

Vaccination Rollout Delayed In Parkes

March 26, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

By Wednesday afternoon the nominated medical practice in Parkes that is included in the COVID-19 Vaccination Rollout had not yet received its supply of the vaccination.

The Currajong Street Medical Centre is part of the Phase 1b rollout that started on Monday. The centre had no indication when the vaccination would arrive, and could only put people on a waiting list.

A total of 56 practices across the Western NSW Primary Health Network (PHN) will be involved in the rollout. As there is currently limited stock of imported vaccine, GPs will be provided with limited stocks and will receive deliveries weekly. According to the Western NSW PHN website residents can rest assured that as more practices become involved during the first four weeks of Phase 1b, there will be ample opportunity for everyone eligible to be vaccinated in a timely manner.

The following groups are eligible in the Phase 1b rollout: people aged 70 years and over; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 55 years and over; health care workers not vaccinated during Phase 1a; people aged 18 years and over with specified underlying medical conditions; and critical and high-risk workers.

Special Bond Between Parkes And NT Community Through Rotary Project

March 26, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Rotary Club celebrated the completion of the toiletry kits with a special function last week. At the event were(L-R) Glen Westcott (Parkes Christian School principal), Mark Ritchie (Parkes Rotary Club president), Jenny Jewel (Parkes Rotary), Marie Noakes (Parkes Christian School student), Michael Milston (guest speaker) and Donna Payne (Holy Family School teacher).

Australia is the only developed country in the world with trachoma and the Parkes Rotary Club is actively helping to prevent its spread.

With the input of community members, the Rotary Club has made up 50 toiletry kits that will be send to a school in the Northern Territory.

“Our club was allocated the Yulara School, a coeducational combined school about 450km south west of Alice Springs,” said Jenny Jewel, who was in charge of the project.

Jenny is very grateful to all the community members who contributed to the project. The youngest was 13-year-old Parkes Christian School student Marnie Noakes who played a major part in the sewing of the bags. “When Marnie heard about the project, she offered her help and ended up sewing 50 bags,” said Jenny. She also encouraged her class mates to write pen pal letters to the children at the Yulara School.

Donna Payne, who teaches at Holy Family School, also organised letters from her students that were included in all the bags.

Jenny said she also had involvement from Eileen Newport of the Indigenous Language Group, while Rotary members Deb Hoarder, Judith Shore and Barbara Thompson helped out too.

Apart from sewing cotton bags, the Rotary Club also filled them with toiletry supplies for the students to use to ensure better hygiene.

Trachoma, an eye infection that can lead to blindness, is easily transmitted between children. The End Trachoma campaign focuses on teaching children good hygiene

Vouchers Will Boost Local Economy

March 26, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Services Club has registered for the dine vouchers. The other businesses registered so far are Cooke Park Café, Bent Food & Wine, Fu Yuan Chinese Restaurant, Parkes Hotel, Parkes McDonalds, Roasted Kombi, Railway Hotel, Hong Long Chinese and Wholesome Blend.

The NSW Government’s Dine & Discover program can potentially inject almost $16 million into the Central West according to Business NSW.

The program consists of four $25 vouchers for every NSW resident aged 18 and over to spend in participating businesses.

Vouchers have started to become available across regional NSW from last week with the rollout to be completed by the end of the month. While Parkes Shire residents have not yet been able to claim their vouchers, local businesses have been encouraged to start registering for the program.

By Tuesday ten Parkes businesses had already registered for the dine vouchers. Some reported that tourists in town had started to use their vouchers.

NSW Minister for Customer Service, Vic-tor Dominello told business owners at a recent webinar that on average, residents were spending around $42 when utilising one of their vouchers.

The four vouchers are divided into two categories to be used for eating in at restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and clubs from Monday to Thursday, excluding public holidays. The two discover vouchers can be used for entertainment and recreation, including cultural institutions, live music, and arts venues, available seven days a week, excluding public holidays.

Earlier this week no businesses in Parkes had so far registered for the discover vouchers.

“No one needs extra encouragement to have a meal out or enjoy some downtime after the past year, so I encourage Western NSW businesses to register now so they can reap the rewards when the program opens here soon,” said Vicki Seccombe of Business NSW. “In particular, we are encouraging our entertainment and recreation businesses in the region to get involved as we are seeing less of these businesses currently registered.”

Call For Parkes Bypass Tenders

March 26, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Artist’s impression of the new Parkes Bypass.

Tenders for a major construction partner have been called to build the $187.2 million Parkes Bypass funded by the Australian and NSW Governments.

The call for tenders will be open for eight weeks to allow the best proposals to come forward. The new 10.5km road, between Maguire Road to the north and Barkers Road to the south, will remove more than 1,200 heavy vehicles and other through traffic from the centre of Parkes each day.

NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said in addition to the main contract, an information session would be held for local contractors and suppliers, to allow them to meet the prospective tenderers and start building opportunities for local employment. “We want to ensure the community is benefitting from the project before a single vehicle uses the bypass by linking local businesses employing qualified tradespeople with this game-changing road project,” the Minister said.

“The Parkes Bypass is not only going to deliver safer and better journeys for motorists on the Newell Highway, it’s also going to inject millions in economic activity into Parkes, helping to build a safer and stronger region.”

A mandatory pre-tender meeting for all interested tenderers, including a site inspection, will be held on Tuesday, 20th April at the Parkes Golf Club from 9am. The community will continue to be kept informed as the project progresses. The successful head contractor for the main construction contract is expected to be announced following this process with work set to start before the end of the year.

For more information on the project visit nswroads.work/parkesupgrade. Tender documents can be downloaded from www.tenders.nsw.gov.au/rms

The project is jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing $149.7 million and the NSW Government $37.4 million.
