A ‘Courtship’ Of 65 Years

March 19, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Ann (89) and Laurie (90) Jamieson with their wedding photo taken on 10th March 1956. The best man, Brian Donnelly, was a friend of Laurie and the bridesmaid, Judith Morgan (O’Malley) is Ann’s cousin.

Their match up started with a meeting on the tennis court and last week Laurie and Ann Jamieson celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

“It was a private tennis court located where the car wash is today,” recalls Ann smiling at Laurie sitting across from her in their Parkes home where they’ve lived since 1979.

They moved to their Middleton Street house after 24 years on the farm at Brol-gan. “I never thought I would marry a farmer,” said Ann, who grew up in Parkes and qualified as a dental nurse after school.

“Within the first two years on the farm we had a drought and a flood,” said Ann who gave up her job to help Laurie work on the land.

“I miss the animals, especially my pet pig called Erk, the quietness and our neighbours. It was a good place to bring up our daughter Helen.” Memories of getting bogged on their way to the ball, and trying to drive a truck still makes her laugh.

Her fondest memory is when Helen came into their lives. “She is a wonderful person and we are very lucky to have her nearby in Orange.” Helen worked as a journalist at the Sydney Morning Herald before moving with her journalist husband and two children to Orange.

As for Ann and Laurie’s secret to their enduring marriage – Ann says it is all about helping each other in any way you can, doing things together that you both enjoy and treating each other as equals. Laurie says ‘no comment’ with some mischief in his eyes.

When Ann was diagnosed with a rare cancer 20 years ago, it was Laurie who stepped up and cared for her. “The doctor calls my recovery a miracle. I think it also helped that I was doing so much sport all my life.”

As in a tennis match, they take turns to ‘serve’ and it’s Laurie who spoils her with breakfast every morning at the moment.

Health Staff Vaccination Starts Monday

March 19, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

The Western NSW Local Health District will start providing COVID-19 vaccinations to its staff from Monday, 22nd March.

“The Australian Government has developed a schedule that will see the most at-risk groups receive the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible,” said Western NSW Local Health District Chief Executive Scott McLachlan.

“Phase 1a includes healthcare workers who work in areas such as emergency departments and intensive care units, as well as aged care residents. Phase 1b includes all other healthcare workers.”

There will be fixed clinics in Orange and Dubbo for healthcare workers from Monday, while the Bathurst clinic will open on Tuesday. Two mobile clinics will also be in operation from Monday visiting all the smaller health facilities over the coming weeks that include facilities in the Parkes Shire. Eligible Lachlan Health Service staff will be contacted directly with information on how to make an appointment when the service comes to their site.

“The vaccination requires two injections at least 12 weeks apart, so staff will be booked in for both their appointments for the Ox-ford/AstraZeneca vaccine. “The Oxford/AstraZeneca offers advantages for our district given the challenges of distance,” said Scott.

The general public will be vaccinated according to the Australian Government’s schedule. “I would encourage people to use the online eligibility checker to see when and how they can access vaccination.

“This is a really exciting development. Our staff, and our communities have been incredible in taking action to minimise the spread of COVID-19, and we all want the vaccination program to be a success.”

Local Project Blossoms Nationally

March 19, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

Project Sprouts, a Parkes community-led initiative, took a step onto the national stage this week.

Working party member Sherree Rosser did a 20-minute presentation at the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) National Conference in collaboration with Project Sprouts Coordinator Fiona Francis.

“This is great progress for our project after its launch in October last year,” said Sherree. The conference was held online this week. Sherree pre-recorded her presentation and was live online on Tuesday for a ten-minute question session after her presentation.

The conference provided a forum for early intervention projects to share how they adapt, adjust and evolve services and policies to support children, families and communities. “I hope our project will inspire other communities to have a go at what we are doing here,” said Sherree.

The seeds for Project Sprouts were planted in 2018, when Royal Far West held a community meeting in Parkes to discuss the confronting findings from its ‘The Invisible Children’ report about the state of children’s developmental health in rural and remote Australia. The report used AEDC data showing that 22% of children in the Parkes Shire start school with on developmental delay. Determined that no child in Parkes would be an ‘Invisible Child’, Project Sprouts was formed.

Sherree said without the support of Roy-al Far West the project would not have been possible. Where no local services are available, Royal Far West is providing health and developmental screenings, as well as training to increase community understanding of child development.

Experts from Royal Far West will be in the Parkes Shire next week for some teach by modelling sessions for teachers and parents with children who need support. “During May we will have another week of assessments and screenings.” said Sherree.

Who Makes The Best Anzac Biscuit?

March 19, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

If you love baking biscuits then a new competition hosted by the Parkes RSL Sub Branch is just for you!

The Anzac biscuit has stood the test of time and making them has become a popular tradition Australians use to commemorate Anzac Day.

The Parkes RSL Sub Branch is running an Anzac biscuit baking competition in the lead-up to Anzac Day this year.

It is a state-wide competition, hosted by sub branches, with Parkes’ returned servicemen and women excited to see locals taking part.

Entries have opened in Parkes and residents of any age from across the shire are invited to enter, get creative and cook up a storm.

The competition will be judged in an adult and a junior section, and participants can submit more than one entry. All entries need to include nine biscuits for judging.

If the cooking itself isn’t enough to entice you, there are some pretty sweet prizes up for grabs for the best biscuits.

The winner of the adult section will receive $200 and the Keith Woodlands Memorial Trophy, and qualify them for the district final. The runner-up will receive $100. The competition is being conducted at three levels – local, district and state.

The junior winner will receive $100 and runner-up $50.

The competition will be conducted under the rules of NSW Health and conditions applicable to Covid-19.

Entry forms are available at the front reception desk at the Parkes Services Club.

The entry fee is $5 and all biscuits must be delivered to the Boulevard Room at the Services Club between 10am and 11.30am on Saturday, 17th April.

For more information contact Parkes Services Club on 6862 1966.
