COVID Restrictions Apply At Australia Day Celebrations

January 22, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

An all Australian car display will form part of the Australia Day celebrations in Cooke Park on Tuesday from 10am.

The Parkes Shire 2021 Australia Day celebrations will go ahead but with a difference to accommodate current COVID-19 guidelines and event restrictions.

This means the award ceremonies and gatherings will be scaled down versions of what generally occurs. There will also not be an Australia Day Ambassador attending celebrations. Instead, Parkes Shire Councillors and Australia Day committee representatives will acknowledge community members at a local level.

“This year it is particularly important to recognise the outstanding people and groups in our community who have positively contributed to the local culture, community and environment during the current pandemic,” said Parkes Shire Mayor, Cr Ken Keith OAM. “We ask that residents attending events please practice physical distancing, follow the NSW Health guidelines and stay home if you are unwell.”

Parkes, Peak Hill, Tullamore, Bogan Gate and Trundle will each hold their own Australia Day celebrations and community gatherings.

Parkes volunteer Carolyn Rice has been acknowledged by the Lachlan Health Service for her nomination for the NSW Health Volunteer of the Year Award. Acting Lachlan Health Service Manager Jenni McGee said: “We nominated Carolyn for the NSW Health Volunteer of the Year Award. Unfortunately, she didn’t win at the state level, but she is a shining star in our eyes.

“Carolyn is the Chair of the Lachlan Health Council and also a representative on the Patient Safety and Quality meeting at Parkes. She plays an important role between the community and the Parkes Hospital,” said Jenni.

“Carolyn not only has the respect of the staff at the hospital, but also those in the community. If they have concerns they are confident to come to her and she will raise them with the Health Council.

“Carolyn also participates as a consumer representative on numerous interview panels, and she conducts patient rounding with patients and their families. We are extremely grateful for all the work and effort Carolyn does for the Parkes Hospital. She is a wonderful asset to our Parkes Hospital Team.”

Memories From Margaret

January 22, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

We were living and working on a property in the Pilliga scrub, had four young children and I was expecting twins.

Whilst our two eldest children were at school, my husband, Ian, often took three-year old Alex to work with him. It was not long before Alex was quite adept at driving the grey Massey Ferguson tractor and Ian often sat on the trailer whilst it was being towed by the tractor.

One day as they traversed a dry creek bed and headed towards a fork in the trail, Ian called to Alex and indicated that he should take the left fork, but Alex misunderstood the directions and immediately swung the tractor left which took him between two large trees. Alex argues the point on this to this day, 54 years later, claiming that he did not misunderstand but that his father gave him the wrong information.

The tractor fitted between the trees, but the trailer did not! Ian was left sitting on the disembodied trailer in the creek bed as he watched the tractor, towing the chassis and wheels of the trailer, wend its way up the bank of the creek.

Ian’s boss was most understanding, declaring that we probably needed a more up to date trailer equipped with a turntable, and asking what would be needed in order to build it. Of course, Ian built it and it was a much better trailer.

Did You Know?

Feeding the ducks is a great activity to do with the little ones… but it is not good to feed only bread to ducks as it has no nutritional value for them. Just like humans, birds need a varied diet to stay healthy. Too much bread can leave them feeling full without giving them all of the important vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need.

This does not mean you have to stop feeding them all together. You can still feed the ducks at Bushman’s Dam and other water ways, but take some sweetcorn, oats, defrosted frozen peas, cut up grapes, cooked rice, chopped lettuce or bird seed with you. They will love that, and you will know you’ve helped them with a more balanced diet! If you must feed ducks with bread, the best would be to use something other than leftovers from a cheap white loaf.

Thank you to Kim Shambrook for sending us this photo she took of a sign in Orange to alert the public about feeding bread to ducks.

Electronic Prescriptions

January 22, 2021 By Maggi Barnard

A convenient alternative to paper prescriptions

What is an electronic prescription?
An electronic prescription is a digitally generated prescription that is sent to you via SMS or email by your health care provider. When visiting an authorised prescriber, you may be given the option to choose an electronic prescription.

To access your medications, you will need to present your SMS or email to the pharmacy. The pharmacy will then scan the QR code attached to unlock your prescription and dispense it as per normal.

If you have repeats, a new SMS or email will be sent to you when you get your medicine from the pharmacy.

What are the benefits?
All medicines can be prescribed using an electronic prescription. The message containing the link to your electronic prescription is stored on your digital device, so you can access it whenever you’re ready – saving you time, streamlining the process and improving medicine safety.

What other services can help me manage my medications?
There are a range of different supports and services we provide to help ensure easier access and improved safety when it comes to managing your medications.

We are here to help. Electronic prescriptions are new to all of us, and with that comes questions. Please feel free to call or pop in if you have any questions about electronics prescription or anything regarding your health and managing your medications.

11 Days Of Double Demerits: Double demerits start on Thursday, 24th December to Sunday, 3rd January 2021 (inclusive) and apply for all speeding, seat belt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences. Mobile Phone Detection Cameras will be used and fines issued. Drivers caught using their phones during this period will get a $457 fine and 10 demerits. With state borders now open and COVID restrictions further eased in NSW, authorities are expecting traffic to increase over the holiday period. NSW Police’s Central West Highway Patrol Sergeant Martin Ling said double demerit points worked as a deterrent for motorists’ bad behavior. “Statistics show there’s a 30% reduction in casualty crashes when double demerit points are in play. All available Highway Patrol Officers will be working. All Police cars are a mobile random breath and drug testing unit – it is not just rhetoric, it is true. In Central West Police District, we will be concentrating our efforts on back roads and regional roads.”

Water Restrictions Eased: The Parkes Shire recently moved to Level 1 restrictions, which means domestic users can water with soaker hoses, micro sprays and drip systems before 10am and after 5pm on a daily basis. Hand-held hoses can be used at any time. Parkes Shire Council’s

Director Infrastructure Andrew Francis said: “Council implements restrictions on water usage under the Local Government Regulation, to ensure water supply is preserved in times of drought or other water scarcity.” The Parkes water supply includes a network of eight groundwater bores, a connection to the Lachlan River, two surface reservoirs (Lake Endeavour and Lake Metcalfe) and an advanced water recycling facility. For more information about Council’s Water Management and tips on how to conserve water at your property visit www.parkes.nsw.gov.au

Help Manage Vegetation Growth: Council is reminding the community about the health and safety risks of overgrown blocks and verges. While Council is responsible for the maintenance and safety of public land, property owners in the Shire are responsible for their private property maintenance including vacant blocks, nature strips and laneways. Property owners need to ensure their property does not become a fire hazard or provide a place for vermin to live and breed. This includes keeping properties free from long grass and vegetation, as well as waste. For more information regarding overgrown and untidy properties, contact Council’s Planning and Environment Department on 6861 2373.

Santa’s Magical Kingdom In Parkes

December 18, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

CHRISTMAS CRAZY … Maree Tanswell, or the Crazy Christmas Lady as her grandkids call her, just loves Christmas and every year she shares her fascination by putting on a magical display at her house.

Maree Tanswell fits right into the magical Christmas scene where she stands next to an elf with a giant 10-foot Santa towering over them keeping an eye on his sleigh and reindeer and all the other elves adding to the entrancing scene in her garden in Molong street.

“I just love the spirit of Christmas, ever since I was a child.” Maree’s fascination with Christmas took her all the way to Finland five years ago to cross the Arctic Circle and visit the Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi in Lapland where she met the ‘real’ Santa Claus.

“He reinforced everything I believed in,” said Maree pointing to her prized photo with Santa, which has a special place in her house every Christmas. “He did an exceptional job. I heard him speak six languages and he even knew where Parkes was!

Visiting that village where you could see Santa’s sleigh, feed the reindeer, send your Christmas letters and of course shop to your heart’s content, was the highlight of my fascination with Christmas.”

The impression lasted and when Maree saw a giant Santa in a shop in Newcastle last year, she just had to buy it. Luckily for her, the Santa can collapse, “but he still filled up my whole car!”

Santa needs elves, and this year Maree travelled to the famous Bredbo Christmas Barn north of Cooma where she found a beautiful set of elves. “I had to get the whole set, as their faces change every year! The owners of the Bredbo shop travel all over the world to get their supplies.” She also added the sleigh and reindeer to her ever-growing collection this year.

Maree Tanswell with the real Santa Claus when she visited the Santa Claus Village in Lapland, Finland in 2015.

She used to put up lights on the farm, but when they moved to Parkes four years ago, Maree saw her chance to get creative. Her collection has grown so much that she had to add a shipping container in the backyard for storage.

During the year Maree takes time to visit Christmas shops around the state on her quest to find unique items that appeal to her. This means the enchanting scene in her garden spills over into the house where the magic continues. The Christmas tree, mostly decorated with beautiful flowers, takes prime position in front of the window, specifically designed for display when the house was built.

“I will just carry on as I still have eight grandchildren with another on the way!” Children make Christmas special for Maree. “I’ve been very privileged to always have children around for Christmas, from my own children to my grandchildren.”

This year they will all be at her house to dress up on Christmas eve and spread some cheer to all the people driving past. She said many people have come past already and that brings a smile to her face knowing she can share the magic.

For Maree the secret of an enjoyable Christmas is to get organised early. “I find Christmas very peaceful and calming. I love having my family around, the Christmas carols and all the hustle and bustle.”

Our Gal – Margaret Irwin

December 18, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I’ve lived here for 23 years and I really like the easy-going country atmosphere. It is so very much home.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I’m retired and spend my time caring for my home and family and, at the moment, preparing to celebrate our Diamond Wedding Anniversary (60 years).

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Writing, gardening and walking with my dogs.

What makes you proud? My family. Seeing them achieve and watching them help to make the world a better place. Watching my family extend into several great-grandchildren

If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? A horse. I love the sense of exhilaration and freedom that comes from watching a horse stretch out and run and I would love to experience that.

What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? The Music Box Dancer is my favourite piece of music because it causes me to want to dance. My favourite book is ‘This was a Man’ by Jeffrey Archer.

Tell us about your best holiday. My husband and I spent a month travelling up the Red Centre via the Indian Pacific and the Ghan to Darwin and the Top End. The spoiling that we received on both trains was unforgettable, the side trips, the scenery, the mishaps and adventures made it totally memorable and a journey we will never forget.

Rediscover Bushman’s Dam This Holiday

Did you know there are plumed whistling ducks at Bushman’s Dam in Parkes?

A reader of The Parkes Phoenix, Kim Shambrook, said she was spending time with her grandkids there recently and they discovered not only turtles, but also plumed whistling ducks. “We were excited to find lots of turtles swimming around, and then discovered the whistling ducks visit Parkes this time of the year.”

Kim wanted to remind residents to never feed bread to ducks as it has no nutritional value for them.

“How good is it to have Bushman’s Dam. It is a wonderful place to visit with grandchildren to explore and play,” said Kim.
