The Write Stuff

November 6, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

The Gully

I went to the gully to get away from life,
the noise of traffic, chaos and strife.
Arguments, stress, pressures and more,
I felt unable to even the score.
Down in the gully amongst the trees
that stand so tall on a carpet of leaves,
I sat on one of the rocks that abound,
with ants and bees and flowers around.
I felt the gentle touch of the breeze,
The sound of the birds put me at ease.
Far from the echoes of trouble and strife,
I found in the gully the spirit of life.

Two Kids Cruise Free

I won this competition you see
Then they said two kids cruise free.
Why did they do this thing to me?
It isn’t fair it just can’t be.
I’d like a trip for me and thee,
But they say two kids cruise free!
Thirty years with ever a fee,
Of kids and dogs and what’s for tea.
I’ve never won a thing and gee,
Now I’ve got a trip to sea,
And hang it all, two kids cruise free!

Dragons Flock To Lake Forbes For Fun

November 6, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Endeavour Dragons team took part in the inaugural Forbes Fun Day on Sunday, which was also the first regatta since the start of the pandemic.

After a COVID drought of regattas, the Parkes Dragon Boat Club (PDBC) had a great day competing in the Forbes Fun Day on Sunday.

The Parkes Endeavour Dragons joined six other clubs from the Central West to take part in the day organised by the Forbes Dragon Boat Club. The other clubs came from Dubbo, Orange (two clubs) and Bathurst.

The inaugural Forbes Fun Day included 200m races, a 100m dash for cash, the 270m Bridge to Bridge Classic and a sweeps event. The races were all very tight and provided great entertainment for onlookers. The central location of Lake Forbes proved to be great advertising for the sport of dragon boating showing people, who happened to be on the footpath around the lake or passing by, what it is all about.

“The Forbes Fun Day was an opportunity for clubs in the Central West to come together and enjoy the camaraderie that goes with friendly competition,” said newly elected PDBC president Tony Gatt.

“The Parkes Endeavour Dragons had a fantastic day and showed they have the ability to mix with the best, returning solid performances throughout the day. Our sincere thanks to Forbes for organising the event and we will reciprocate in the future.”

There were three Endeavour Dragons who had their first taste of the adrenaline rush of a regatta. Janine Hando, Jenny Ryan and Laura Miller could not stop smiling all day.

PDBC coach Beth Thomas shared her team’s excitement saying: “I’m so proud of everyone’s great efforts today. It’s all about the fun, friendship and team spirit – and today’s team had that in bucketloads. All I saw were smiles today, all day, all round!”

The Central West clubs are keen for events in the region, and PDBC is keen to promote its annual Picnic Day in May with a special challenge being planned for next year.

If you are keen to try out dragon boating, PDBC trains twice a week at Lake Endeavour: Sundays at 8:30am for 9am on the water, and Thursdays at 5:45pm for 6pm on the water. Contact 0418 253 045 for more information. Come and experience the beauty of Lake Endeavour and the excitement of paddling!

How A Facebook Group Changed Small Business In Rural Australia

October 30, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Jenn Donovan not only created a Facebook group, but a whole community to support businesses in rural Australia.

In one year a Facebook group has helped over 20 small businesses in the Parkes Shire and changed over 285,000 lives in rural Australia.

Buy From a Bush Business was created by Jenn Donovan a year ago with the online community growing to almost 300,000 with hundreds still joining every week.

“The page is a great idea to promote country businesses doing it tough with the drought, bushfires and now COVID,” said Glen Harbidge, who used the page to promote his photography business. “It has certainly helped us to get our business out there by way of post shares.”

Glen said he had posted about six times on the group and would make up to 15 sales each time and his post would be shared up to 12 times.

According to Jenn more than 20 businesses from Parkes and Peak Hill have made use of the page over the past year.

Another Parkes resident has described the business she had received from the
page as phenomenal.

During COVID online shopping increased markedly with many businesses in the group experiencing a vast rise in sales.

Jenn, a farmer’s wife and marketing thought leader from the Riverina, was driving home from a marketing tour in October last year when she came up with the idea of a Facebook group to support rural small business owners.

“Some people who posted didn’t even have a business yet, just a hobby, but soon found themselves with a community of brand new buyers, from all over the country, wanting their goods”.

Little did Jenn know she would also create connection: she connected people; she connected the city with the country; she created a community that, even if they couldn’t afford to spend money with businesses, they helped in other ways like sharing a post, liking a post or giving the business owner encouragement or a compliment.

All Pet Animals Need A Home Too

October 30, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Debbie Horder with some of the kittens she is looking after at the moment.

Spring is a time of renewal, beautiful flowers and lots of cute little baby animals.

The sad reality is that many households end up with unwanted litters of kittens and many of them end up being dumped on the side of the road, in a paddock or left at the pound.

Debbie Horder, who ran a pet shelter in Western Australia, saw an opportunity when she moved to Parkes some years ago and decided to help abandoned animals.

She takes in any animal that needs help, but mostly looks after kittens. She works with Pet Rescue, Australia’s largest online pet adoption platform, and Pets Haven, a pro-life animal shelter in Victoria.

She is also affiliated with the vets in Parkes and Forbes, and she works with the Parkes pound.

“I usually take in animals for about four weeks to get to know them. That helps me to find the best fit from the applications I had received from people wishing to adopt a pet. I can get up to 40 applications per kitten.”

All the animals she gives up for adoption have been desexed, vaccinated, treated for fleas and registered and the new owner pays $350 to cover the vet costs.

She said she had 15 kittens over the past two months. “We have a huge feral problem in town, and unfortunately there is a high occurrence of feline aids and leukemia among them.”

Debbie said it would be fantastic if Council could organise a cheap desex day for pet owners. “Something similar to the free microchip day. It would mean a lot less abandoned kittens in town as a female cat can have three litters per year with four or more kittens per litter.

Make sure to contact Debbie on debhorder@gmail.com if you need to rehome a pet or are looking at adopting.

NSW Hits 3 Million Tests

October 30, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

COVID-19

As the state marked three million COVID-19 tests this week, the NSW Government called on the community to continue to work together to fight the deadly virus.

“I want to thank everyone in NSW who has come forward to be tested – three million COVID-19 tests is an incredible result,” said Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

The 3,000,641 COVID-19 tests have been performed on 2,247,101 people in NSW. Of those people tested, 63.7% had a single test and 36.3% had more than one test, with 1.16% having more than five tests.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said: “Get tested at the first sign of even the mildest of symptoms, wash your hands regularly, physically distance and wear a mask in places where you can’t physically distance.”

Restrictions eased include: 30 people outdoors in public spaces (up from 20 previously). A maximum of 20 people in households. 30 customers per booking, and 30 customers per table, at hospitality venues (up from maximum of 10 customers). Corporate functions of up to 300 people can be held at restaurants, subject to a COVID safety plan. Religious gatherings/places of worship (excluding weddings and funerals) can have up to 300 people. Gyms only require a COVID-19 safety marshal if there are more than 20 people in the gym at one time.

From 1st December, the number of people at weddings will increase to 300 people subject to the four square metre rule indoors and two square metre rule outdoors.

Business Lead NSW Out Of Crisis

October 30, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

There are positive signs that the NSW economy is getting back on track. The quarterly Business Conditions Survey of Business NSW has revealed the first bounce in business confidence in a year.

The survey shows business perceptions about the performance of the NSW economy rebounded strongly from the record low in June. “The outlook has also improved, with businesses expecting further lifts in the economy for the remainder of 2020,” said Business NSW, Regional Manager – Western NSW, Vicki Seccombe.

“The strong bounce in business confidence is a welcome boost and gives a big tick to government decisions that have backed a business-led recovery.”

“In Western NSW, the pick-up in the agricultural sector due to easing drought conditions and the increased tourism across the region have continued to bolster the local business outlook.”

“However, our businesses are experiencing some the of highest skills shortages that we have seen for some time, with over 47% Western NSW businesses responding they have not been able to find suitably skilled people,” said Vicki.

The survey also examined some of the factors common to businesses most affected by COVID-19. “While business services, hospitality and tourism businesses are heavily impacted overall, business performance in these industries varies dramatically depending on location and type of customers serviced.”

“Businesses located in a CBD (regional or metro) and reliant on foot traffic, for example, are among the most vulnerable, as are those reliant on international visitors.”

“While many businesses are about to enter a difficult period as support measures are tapered back, it’s promising to see a strong foundation for recovery emerging in NSW and in particular Western NSW,” Vicki said.

Parkes Bypass Early Work

October 30, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Early work has started on the Parkes bypass to enable the construction of the bypass, which will realign the Newell Highway two kilometres west of Parkes.

The early works include upgrading Nock Road to a bitumen surface and closing the road from direct access to the Newell Highway by making it a cul-de-sac. A number of utility relocations will also be completed, including upgrading water mains along the length of the footprint of the bypass.

“The bypass will reduce travel time by up to 10 minutes and increase safety by removing more than 1,200 trucks a day from the town of Parkes,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack.

NSW for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the early work would be delivered by Parkes Shire Council and supported 20 council and contractor jobs.

Further work will involve:
• construction of a new bitumen road between Thomas Street and Mitchell Street;
• construction of a new bitumen road between Condobolin Road and Back Trundle Road to replace Moulden Street; and
• construction of a new section of road between Brolgan Road and Hartigan

Christmas Cards 4 Farmers

October 30, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Rural Aid is asking school students to lift the spirits of farmers around the nation by creating homemade cards with a special and personal message.

CEO of Rural Aid, John Walters said that in addition to the anguish caused by the COVID pandemic, farmers have endured years of record-breaking droughts, devastating floods and catastrophic bushfires. “After such a difficult year, we want to put a smile on the faces of Aussie farmers. Students can make this possible by getting their school involved in our Christmas Cards 4 Farmers initiative.”

“The reality is that if you eat food or wear clothes, you’re a partner in Australian farming. From fruit and vegetables to bread, meat, cotton and wool, our farmers are central to our everyday life.” John said the Christmas Cards 4 Farmers campaign had been influential in previous years. “In the past, the letters that school children have written to our farmers have had an incredible impact on the farmers’ mental health. In one special case, a schoolgirl named Matilda wrote a letter to a farmer in need which helped save his life.”

Help Rural Aid continue this tradition by creating your homemade card and sending it in before 19th November. Place all cards in a bigger envelope and mail them to Rural Aid at PO Box 1342, Sunnybank Hills QLD 4109. Rural Aid will put the card in envelopes and send them to Aussie farmers. Let’s End 2020 With A Festival!

October 30, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

TIME TO CELEBRATE… The organising committee of the Arts Revival Festival hope the festival will bring cheer back into the community. They are on stage in the Little Theatre (L-R) Lisa Ramsay, Deb Jones, Kerryn Jones, Margot Jolly (front), Roxanne Gallagher, Neil Westcott and Elsie Mahon.

An inspirational and uplifting event is planned for the Parkes Shire community to end the year with some cheer and joy.

The Arts Revival Festival will take place from Monday, 14th to Saturday, 19th December with a full program including art and craft workshops, three one act plays, an art exhibition, a craft market and various musical performances.

“It is an opportunity to revive, celebrate and foster artistic activity in our local community and use the arts to inspire and uplift people in these troubled times,” said spokesperson Lisa Ramsay. The event is being organised by the Parkes Shire Arts Advisory Council and Parkes M&D Society.

“It is all about local art and craft in our Shire. Following the drought, fires, floods and the COVID pandemic, we felt it was necessary to support the arts and encourage people to have something to work towards to see a revival of the arts.”

“There were so many events cancelled or cut short this year. With this festival we hope to raise everyone’s spirit.”

Lisa said the festival was for Shire residents with COVID safe plans in place for all events.

Artists from all over the Shire will be taking part in the exhibition that will run for the whole festival at the Coventry Room at the Parkes Library. The brand new Makerspace venue at the newly renovated library will be used for the first time for the workshops on four of the days.

The Parkes M & D Society is in full swing with the production of the three one act plays. The productions include two adult and one junior play. The two adults plays will be presented as one show and features an Australian version of Anton Chekhov’s one-act farce The Proposal/Wedding. The junior play is Mother Duck and Golden Goose, a fairy tale spoof. There will be five performances of the plays throughout the week. Under COVID rules, the theatre will have 88 seats per performance at 50% capacity.

Musical performances will take place before and after the plays at the Parkes Little Theatre, including an hour performance by popular local group Amitie on Saturday. The theatre carpark will also be the venue for the market on Saturday,19th December.

Lisa said the market would be a good opportunity to purchase some locally made Christmas gifts. The Parkes Shire Concert Band and other musicians will be spreading more Christmas cheer at the event with performances throughout the day.

Member of the organising committee Kerryn Jones said the festival was bringing together the cultural precinct idea with the Coventry Room and Makerspace venues and Little Theatre being used. “We hope to make it an annual event and include the new multi-purpose centre being built in Cooke Park in the future too.”

The committee plans to keep ticket prices and workshop costs to the minimum to make the festival accessible to everyone.
