Tommy Leads The Way For Pink Up Parkes

October 4, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

BEFORE AND AFTER… Tommy Davis with his long locks (left) and after the big shave done by Dolly Allan (right).

It’s Pink Up Parkes month and one resident has already taken a big step in showing his support and raising funds for the McGrath Foundation. Currajong Disability Services (CDS) client Thomas Davis kept his promise and shaved his locks to raise vital funds.

Thomas, or Tommy as he is known, talked about doing a shave months before, and last week he had his curls snipped by Dolly Allan, also of CDS.

“I think it’s a great initiative by Tommy,” said Indigo Kriedemann of Currajong Disability Services. “So far there have been around 500 donations. He is a credit to himself, his family and Currajong,” she said.

The idea first came to Tommy before the start of the 2019 NRL season when he was originally going to shave his hair if the Canterbury Bulldogs won the wooden spoon.

While the Bulldogs rallied to finish mid-table, the idea soon developed into something else and more supportive of a worthwhile cause – cancer and the McGrath Foundation. “I just wanted to make a difference,” said Tommy, “and hopefully I have. I can’t thank everyone enough for supporting me and the McGrath Foundation,” he said.

If you want to get behind Tommy’s cause, call Currajong on 6863 4713. The Mcgrath Foundation raises money to fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia. More nurses are needed to meet the growing rate of breast cancer diagnosis in Australia.

Draft Master Plan For Special Activation Precinct

October 4, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, John Barilaro

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, John Barilaro released the draft master plan for the Parkes Special Activation Precinct recently. The plan outlines how land should be used across the 4,800 hectare purposely zoned precinct, what businesses could exist and operate there, and how an eco-industrial hub can be established and thrive. Parkes Shire Council’s General Manager, Kent Boyd said: “We are excited to be working with the NSW Government on the next step towards our community’s long-term vision of developing Parkes as a national logistics hub and inland port.”

“The State’s first Special Activation Precinct will be designed to take advantage of the unique economic opportunities of Parkes’ strategic location at the epicentre of the national freight and logistics network and will create up to 3,000 jobs over the next two decades, adding to the diversity of our economy especially in times of drought.” Kent encouraged residents to take up the opportunity to have their say during the consultation period and help Parkes reach its full potential.

The draft master plan follows 12 months of detailed investigation into the area by government and independent advisors. As part of the investigations, an independent consultant identified land owned by Parkes Shire Mayor as one of the parcels that was strategically important to the hub. To protect against potential conflict of interest, Parkes Shire Council has robust procedures in place to ensure there is no question about probity.

The Parkes National Logisitics Hub Probity Plan, available on Council’s website, describes the principles to be applied, the processes to be used and the controls that will be implemented to promote the integrity of any land acquisitions and ensure that all aspects of the process continue to be above reproach and fair to all. To view the draft master plan and to have your say until 20th October, visit www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/exhibition

Abbey addressed the whole school and spoke about her experiences as a professional athlete and the importance of resilience and never giving up. She handed over certificates based on how many hours of physical activity participants do each week. Most children and staff finished in the Gold and Diamond levels, the two highest levels.

On-Farm Issues Direct From Growers

October 4, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Grower John Pattison, Takada Farming, Marrar with GRDC Northern Panel member Bruce Watson from Parkes.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) recently conducted a four-day tour through the Central West and southern NSW to gain ‘on the ground’ insight into the current challenges and opportunities facing grain growers.

GRDC Northern Panel Chair John Minogue said the tour had an important advisory and strategic role in helping to guide ongoing and future research investment.

“While many growers and advisers are battling drought conditions most are positive about the long-term future of the grains industry and value the role research plays in ensuring profitability.”

Issues raised by growers, advisers and end-users included: an increased interest in trials with livestock components; why a successful pulse crop is critical for NSW; the impact of increasing biologicals on soil health; future research capacity; heat and drought tolerant crops, particularly triticale and oats; improving the skills of graduate level agronomists; the carbon economy and what it will mean for grain growers; long season canola options; and what’s next in the barley breeding program.

SNIPPETS…

Pink Up Parkes committee members Jenny Breaden, Diane Green, Tarlie O’Brien and Maureen Kent are get- ting ready for the Parkes Pink Morning Tea Mini Field Of Women at Lions Park from 9:30am to 12noon this Sunday, 6th October. The whole community is invited to support the event and enjoy a free morning tea!

Book a date with a friend that could save both your lives: BreastScreen NSW is encouraging women to get together with a friend to book a mammogram during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to boost screening rates and save lives. More than one in eight women in NSW will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, but almost half of women aged 50-74 are not getting their recommended two-yearly mammograms. “We know there are many reasons why women might be missing their recommended mammogram – they put it off because they are too busy, they are nervous about going, or nervous about the results,” said Western NSW Lo-cal Health District Breastscreen Manager, Meg O’Brien. “By encouraging a friend to go with them, women can ensure that making the appointment becomes a priority. It also means that they will have someone to support them on the day, and as they get the results. We have come a long way with cancer treatment but the reality is still that the more extensive the cancer is, the more it can diminish quality of life.” An appointment with BreastScreen NSW is free and takes about 20 minutes. To book a mammogram with BreastScreen NSW, phone 13 20 50, or book online by visiting book. breastscreen.nsw.gov.au

Our Gal – Shiralee Unger

October 4, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Shiralee Unger

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I moved to Parkes 31 years ago and attended school at Middleton Primary. I’ve lived at Alectown for 20 years. I love the rural lifestyle and the rural people.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I help my husband John run our property, and I work for Craig Smith at The Dish Cafe and at Country Roads Motel at Peak Hill. I enjoy learning new cooking skills with Craig and I like the satisfaction of my motel job. I also love earning a wage because I don’t make any cash on the property.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Riding my horses and competing in competitions around the state.

What makes you proud? My achievements with my horses. I’ve just returned from winning my class in the Reining Cow Horse competition at Wattamondara.

If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? I would be a horse because they are such majestic animals.

What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? My all-time favourite movie is The Man from Snowy River. No need to ask why – it’s obvious.

Tell us about your best holiday? Phoenix in Arizona where I rode horses on a ranch owned by Lee and Mark Smith, where I saw what an amazing affinity they have with their horses. The other highlight of this holiday was riding mules in Medina, Texas.

What is on your bucket list? To learn to have the gift with horses that I’ve experienced with Lee in Phoenix and to help others find the same connection.

Local Health Project Selected For State Event

October 4, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

A local health project has been selected to present at the NSW Health Nursing and Midwifery Showcase in Sydney at the end of this month.

The Western NSW Local Health District’s Nursing Education Team created a Cultural Package to recognise the important role played by overseas trained professionals in rural health, and helps support them when they start work with local health services.

“It is a credit to our Nursing Education team to be presenting at the Showcase. The Showcase highlights the projects and research that nurses and midwives are leading across NSW Health,” said Executive Director of Quality, Clinical Safety and Nursing, Adrian Fahy.

The Cultural Package project was formed after the Nursing Educator Team were consulted on issues regarding communication, team work and cultural awareness for new employees, especially those who were trained overseas.

The Cultural Package was developed to help new employees transition successfully into their work and community environment.

It is made up of five documents and has been distributed to 60 overseas trained employees. The feedback has indicated that in particular it has helped them gain a better understanding of Aboriginal culture and the importance of Aboriginal health is- sues.

It has also resulted in improved communication and team work as it gives the new employees a better understanding of their requirements within the workplace culture.

Dive Right Into Swim Season Tomorrow!

October 4, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

EARLY SWIM… Parkes swimmers Matt and Blake Price and Clara Rice improved on their best times from last season in an early developmental carnival in Orange last Sunday.

The swimming season kicks off tomorrow (Saturday) with the opening of the Parkes pool for the next six months.

The Parkes Sharks Swimming Club will have a registration day tomorrow from 10am to 12 noon with club coaches on hand to assess new entrants.

Orders for new swimming costumes will also be taken. Training for club members will begin on Tuesday, 8th October.

Other changes this season include the move of the club trial night to Thursday nights.

On club trial nights families are more than welcome, even if you are not a member, to still use the pool BBQ facilities, the wading pool and play area.

The first club trial night will be on Thursday, 17th October with races commencing at 6pm.

Fees for this season have been supplemented by the Sharks to help reduce the ongoing hardship caused by the drought.

Even though the Parkes swimming sea- son is yet to begin, Parkes swimmers have been busy with three Sharks members at- tending a Mountains and Plains development carnival in Orange last Sunday.

Matt and Blake Price and Clara Rice dropped several seconds from their previous best times from last season.

The major highlight for the coming sea- son will be the Parkes Carnival in December, and with a great number of local swimmers making representative swimming teams for schools early in the next school year, it would be a great competition to get involved in to improve times and results.

Let’s All ‘Pink Up’ This October!

Parkes has turned pink for October with many local businesses and organisations taking on the challenge to help raise aware-ness and funds for the McGrath Foundation Breast Care Nurses.

Pink Up Your Town is an initiative from the McGrath Foundation in which communities come together to Pink Up – not only to raise vital funds that support specialist McGrath Breast Care Nurses, but to create a visual show of support for local families experiencing breast cancer.

It started with Jane and Glenn McGrath’s very public experience with breast cancer, and has become one of Australia’s most recognised and respected charities. Some years after her initial diagnosis, Jane’s cancer returned. This time, she had a breast care nurse, who both empowered and comforted her, and the entire family.

This experience set the mission for the Foundation, which has become an en-during commitment to support thousands of women and men every day, no matter where they live – for free.

While more than 70,000 families have been supported by 132 McGrath Breast Care Nurses, there’s still a lot more to do to reach every family going through breast cancer.

If you have not yet turned pink, there is still time to register your event, busi-ness or organisation to be part of Pink Up Parkes. You can also support one of the many events as listed on page 6 ranging from social golf and family tennis to dragon boating and a raffle with fabulous prizes. Also go on Facebook or Instagram @pink-upparkes or go to www.centralwestlachlanlandcare.org
