Elsie Mahon gave a very interesting talk on propagation at the Pink Up Parkes Wellness Walk last Saturday.

Christmas Parade And Markets With Local Focus: Friday, 13th December from 6pm is going to be an important day for the Parkes community. The focus of the annual Christmas Parade this year is to showcase what is on offer for people to do in their spare time in Parkes. While the parade will run as usual and along its regular route, the markets in the park will be different. All clubs and organisations are invited to put up a stand to attract new members or just inform the community of their activities. All the market stalls will only be for local people and anyone is invited to sell anything they have made themselves. “We want locals to benefit and keep the money in our town,” said Action Club member Peter Guppy. Entertainment for the night will also focus on local talent from singers to demonstrations of karate, gymnastics and dancing. Entry forms are available on the Parkes Council website under the What’s On events calendar. Registrations close on 29th November. Local performers can email the Action Club parkesactionclub@gmail.com.

Listen Up Trundle Artists: Artists from the Trundle area are invited to make a positive difference to their health service by exhibiting works in the first art exhibition at Trundle Multipurpose Health Service (MPS). The three-month long ‘Totally Trundle’ exhibition will feature artworks on the walls of the Trundle MPS from November with a public opening on 6th November at 5:30pm. Artworks may be original photographs, drawings, paintings or weaving, preferably framed behind glass. Works may be listed for sale. Artworks and entry forms must be delivered to Trundle Hospital reception on 4th and 5th November. Entry forms at http://artsoutwest.org.au/totally-trundle/ or call Christine McMillan at Arts OutWest on 0447 832 043, christine.mcmillan@health.nsw.gov.au

“Ikonic” Social Events: The Ikon Restau- rant in Parkes is making sure you are en- tertained socially with three major events planned until the end of next month. First up on Saturday, 26th October is a Hallow- een dress up party with a ghoulish menu (plus kids menu), live entertainment, trick or treats and lots of fun. On 5th November it is time to look smart for the Melbourne Cup seafood luncheon from 11:30, and on Friday, 29th November something totally different offering a six course Russian de- gustation night. Bookings are essential for all these events. Call 6862 6236.

Castle in the sky… just one of the very exciting and quirky features visitors found in Bill and Beth Thomas’s open garden on Sunday. They took people for a ride in the castle to raise money for the McGrath Foundation.

Our Gal – Rachael Westcott

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I was born in Parkes, but I grew up in Alectown for about 18 years. I moved away to university and this year has been my first year back.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I work at Regional Business Supplies. I love chatting to customers and helping them find what they need. I’m also studying my master’s degree online through CSU.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Read books. Then read some more!

What makes you proud? Watching how our town sticks together through tough times. Drought brings people together in a positive way – support is never far away. I see this positive and faithful perspective in my parents.

If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? I would love to be a cat so I could sleep all day long.

What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? The Young Victoria is my favourite movie, I could watch it over and over. I love anything historical.

Tell us about your best holiday. Last year I spent a few weeks in the UK. Absolutely loved the scenery in Scotland. Bath was probably my favourite city to visit. Looking forward to going back there soon.

What is on your bucket list? I would love to write my own television show and direct it one day just for fun.

Ponds Turned Into Wetlands

October 11, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

The decommissioned Parkes Sewage Treatment Plant effluent ponds along Akuna Road will be transformed into an artificial wetland

As we are all encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle these days, the Parkes Shire Council is leading the way finding a new purpose for its decommissioned effluent ponds.

The former Parkes Sewage Treatment Plant effluent ponds will be transformed into a functional artificial wetland over the next two years.

With funding from the NSW Environmental Trust, preliminary works have started at the ponds site along Akuna Road. Earth works and revegetation will be carried out to create habitats for a range of water bird species and other animals, as well as a natural area for the community to enjoy birdwatching.

“Wetlands are considered one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems, containing a wide diversity of plant and animal life,” said Parkes Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure, Andrew Francis. “They support plants that are found nowhere else, and are a haven for amphibians, reptiles, birds, insects, and mammals.”

The project will focus on the construction of the wetland and revegetation with local native plants, the creation of various wetland features to provide varying habitat elements to cater for different species. The wetland will receive recycled water from Parkes’ Advanced Water Recycling Facility.

Volunteer support will be called upon to help plant some of the many thousands of wetland plants, with Council partnering with Central West Lachlan Landcare to host community planting days.

Chairperson for Central West Lachlan Landcare Ben Kerin said: “Landcare are thrilled to be part of this wonderful project and are looking forward to partnering with Council to involve the community to assist with building habitat onsite”.

Additional funding will be sought to make the wetland more accessible, inviting and educational, including walking tracks, seating, interpretive signage and bird hides.

Pink Up Parkes On A Roll

October 11, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

At the services dinner were (L-R) Mayor Ken Keith, Bob and Ann Steel, Marguerite Burns, Phillipa O’Donnell, Margaret Dwyer and Dianne Green.

The recent Parkes Combined Services Dinner turned pink in support of the Pink Up Parkes drive this month and raised a good sum for the McGrath Foundation.

Hosted by the Parkes Action Club at the Parkes Services Club, the dinner was supported by members from Quota, Rotary, Action Club, View Club and the CWA. A lively fines session rounded off the evening with a total of $750 raised to support our town’s McGrath Breast Care Nurse, Dianne Green.

Dianne was also invited to speak about breast cancer in our region, her role in the Parkes Shire and the different funding models of McGrath Nurses. She explained that the Parkes McGrath position was funded from community donations alone.

Marguerite Burns and Caroline Rice spoke about their experiences with breast cancer. “Breast cancer is not only a women’s issue,” said Dianne. “It is important that men are also breast aware, as there have been men in our community requiring the support of a McGrath Nurse.”

A Pink Up Parkes event is a great way for the whole community to come together and support breast awareness, breast cancer research and breast cancer nurses.

All community groups, businesses, schools and individuals can still get involved by attending or hosting their own pink event in October. (See page 6 for all the events this month.)

Complications From Crooked Teeth

October 11, 2019 By Maggi Barnard

Most people choose to correct crooked teeth for cosmetic purposes or to improve self-confidence.

Did you know that living with misaligned teeth could also negatively impact your health?

Here’s how:
1.
They’re hard to clean. It can be difficult for toothbrush bristles and floss to get be- tween and around crooked teeth, which can lead to a higher risk of oral diseases.

2. They’re injury prone. Crooked teeth that protrude are more likely to crack or chip should an accident happen.

3. Crooked teeth can influence gum dis- ease. How? Gum disease can develop when bacteria in your mouth turns into plaque. When gums don’t fit around teeth properly, there’s more room for bacterial growth.

Have you been thinking about correcting your smile? We’d be happy to speak with you about some of the best treatments available at our practice for an improved look.

Harvey Norman Parkes

This October marks my 10 year anniversary at Harvey Norman. I started in the Dubbo furniture warehouse as a casual and worked my way up the ranks working in every department as a sales- person. Burns Precision Ag

Burns Precision Ag is a family operated business which started out focusing on Precision Ag solutions to help landowners become more efficient. We recognised a gap in the market for affordable security solutions for remote areas. There was already Solar CCTV on the world market but there wasn’t a system that was both affordable and practical for rural Australia. We designed and tested our own prototypes over 12 months. The end result was a tough, reliable solar CCTV system capable of handling hot, cold and windy conditions. We offer eight unique models with customisable options to suit each camera location.

Kerin Physio Co

Kerin Physio Co is a diverse team of allied health professionals, who are passionate about delivering high quality health care to our rural communities.
We offer a full range of healthcare services, and have clinics scattered around the Central West (with Parkes as our central hub and office) or our fabulous therapists can meet you in your home, gym, the pool or office – wherever suits you!
We are thrilled to be a finalist for The Henry’s this year and look forward to a fun night out, and we’d also like to wish all the very best to the other participants.
