Jewellery Through The Ages

March 31, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

nangar

Jewellery has been worn for thousands of years as means to enhance appearance and show status. Like humans, jewellery has evolved through time, from crude necklaces made from natural elements such as wood and iron to precious metals and gemstones used to adorn royalty. Jewellery can be something as simple as silver stud earrings or as extravagant as a tiara dripping in emeralds. Each piece of jewellery can work towards complementing particular features, for example large, statement jewellery pieces tend to work better on fuller figured people as they can swamp petite figures.

When choosing rings, consider the shape of your hand and fingers. Are they long or on the shorter side, thin or broad? For short fingers rings with oval settings work well whereas for long fingers round settings and wide bands can look fantastic. The most important thing to remember when choosing jewellery is to choose what you love! A beautiful smile when you’re feeling good will complement any outfit.

These days, there are hundreds of styles, ranges and brands to choose from and the team at Nangar Gems are here to help you on your quest for the best. Stocking brands such as Pandora, Najo and Thomas Sabo, Nangar Gems will soon be introducing their own line, ‘Diamonds By Nangar’ into the mix which will focus on diamond engagement, wedding and dress rings and will have finance available. The team offer services while you wait such as watch batteries, CAD design and on site jewellery repairs. Nangar Gems specialise in custom made jewellery,
meaning each piece is individual to you.

Should We Move The Silver City Comet?

March 23, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

2

The Silver City Comet Carriage, which is now a fascinating feature of the Henry Parkes Museum, was relocated from the railway 20 years ago. The carriage was given to the people of Parkes Shire by State Rail to recognise the history of the Silver City Comet, which ran from Parkes to Broken Hill and back from 1937 until 1989. The
carriage was restored and painted in 2014 by PDHSI and took 12 hours to be transported from the Railway Station to the Antique Machinery Site!

This was made possible by cranes and heavy transport vehicles. During the relocation workmen warned that it
would not be possible to move again due to the poor condition of the carriage so it looks like the Henry Parkes Centre will be its final resting place. People who helped move the carriage include Railway Loco and Diesel Staff, McPhersons, Cunninghams, police, County Council, PDHSI volunteers, Parkes Shire Council staff and the SES.

The carriage has unfortunately been vandalised several times including spilled drinks and blocked toilets although the interior of the carriage has now been restored including windows, seats and blinds. The exterior has been totally restored and repainted at a cost of over $8,000 and a roof cover has been built over the carriage. The PDHSI are
currently in the process of having the Silver City Comet Carriage put on the Railway Heritage Register listing because of its uniqueness and place in Parkes history.

Currently Parkes Car Club wish to plan extensions to their building which would involve moving the carriage however the Historical Society have fears that moving this large piece of history might cause it to be damaged beyond repair and lost forever.

Mayoral Notes

There is always a lot to see and do in our Shire and this Easter long weekend is no exception. The Tullamore Irish Festival is set to be action packed with loads of activities and entertainment for all the family. Congratulations to the organisers of the Festival which promises to be a great event.

Youth Week 2016 will be held from April 8th to 16th and to celebrate a Pop Up Cinema will travel to each township in the Shire screening free movies to our youth, and Seniors Week kicks off (1st-10th April) with various activities being organised by Neighbourhood Central. Visit our Council website to find out more details of both these events. Parkes Shire Council’s new Waste Collection Service is set to start from the 4th of April, enabling residents to waste less and recycle more. This means residents that have garbage collection services will have access to three waste services – organics, recycling and general waste.

Netwaste in conjunction with Council will be providing more information to ensure all residents are confident in using the new service. Parkes, Peak Hill, Trundle and Tullamore pools will remain open over the Easter long weekend following Parkes Council agreeing to extend the season to Sunday, 3rd April. Although the community request for the season extension has been granted it’s important to acknowledge the additional costs associated with the pools remaining open and we appreciate the communities’ ongoing patronage of the pool. Enjoy your Easter break!

Question of the Week?

March 23, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Do you like to keep fit or play sport and why?

Bennett

Deidre Bennett, OPSM says; “I do as I believe it is very important for mental health, as well as the social side of it. It gives you a sense of community by helping or contributing. Organised sport also bring lots of business to town.”

Dunn

Ethan Dunn, Batt’s Music Centre says; “Yes I do, although I don’t play sport, I like to keep fit by running. I believe it will keep me healthy and help me live longer!”

Karimi

Sina Karimi, Volunteer says; “Yes of course. Doing sport connects me to my inner spirit because when we exercise we become happier, and that reaches every atom in our body to enrich it. When I play basketball it gives me a great feeling of happiness.”

Tandems Travel Through Parkes

March 23, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

C3Cyclists page 4

Parkes was a popular place for charity cyclists last Thursday when two separate groups of cyclists made a stopover in our town. The first group of 21 athletes, the C3 Cyclists, were halfway through their five day mission to travel over 725km from Bourke to Belconnen in Canberra.

Parkes resident, Dot Bradley organized for the group to enjoy morning tea at the Pink Orchid Café. “My daughter belonged to the C3 Church in Sydney, and they asked me to assist with their stopover here” she said. It is the sixth year that the C3 Cyclists have undertaken a major fundraising ride to help purchase important pieces of hospital equipment through the Humpty Dumpty Foundation or to help find cures for childhood cancers through The Kid’s Cancer Project, with every cyclist setting a target of raising around $2,000. “We have already
hit our target of $40,000,” said Stephen Dunstall, one of the organisers. Pastor Arne Olander said; “The money this year will go to the hospitals at Peak Hill, Bourke and Queanbeyan and the extra money we have raised means we can also support a fourth hospital this year.”

Pastor Olander also said they had already raised more than $100,000 in total over seven years. The second group of
49 cyclists who enjoyed lunch at KFC in Parkes took part in the 577km Mill2Mill ride from Gunnedah to Manildra. They had already raised $106,000 for beyondblue, small schools the ride visits along the route, and the Manildra community. Two Parkes residents taking part in the ride, Tina Jones and Rodney Coleman, said it had been very good. “The support we received was fantastic, lots of people were stopping along the way to give cash donations” said Tina.

Autumnal Planting With Jenny

March 23, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

Welcome to autumn. With a heartfelt sigh we all can get out in our gardens to beautify our homes and outdoors once again. Don and I, proprietors of Greenparkes Garden Centre, are proud of our design built garden centre which includes wheelchair access and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

You will be spoilt for choice with our multitude of indoor plants & environmentally suited outdoor plants, seeds & seedlings. Whether you’re a green thumb or a novice, Jenny, Jen, Katie, Val and Jack are ready to assist you in all things outdoors. Soil Preparation: At Greenparkes we believe that garden preparation is of paramount importance. The area or hole prepared should always be larger and deeper than you may have prepared. Be wary of
organic matter you may be able to secure for free as this may cause you problems.

The quantity and age of organic matter you add to your planting area should be considered. Soil too rich or hot can burn roots!

Plant Choice: As an independent garden centre we take care that plants available at the time of your visit will be those suited to our climate and the season. New stock is received weekly during autumn, so we encourage regular visits to keep up to date with the latest and most suitable plants, shrubs and trees. See you at Greenparkes!

Photo Correction: Last week’s Rally Car article photo was actually of the lovely ladies from Parkes Décor who were posing at their stall at the Parkes Field Day. The correct photo of Kerin Hanna and Mark Louez of Just4Kids, who visited Parkes Public last Friday is above. Apologies for the confusion!

C3 Cycle Stop: The Pink Orchid was the venue for a well earned break for the C3 Cyclists this week. Staff at the café made a mascot for the cylists, who raise money for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation.

St Paddy’s Day Fun: Last Thursday the afternoon began with a St Patrick’s Day treasure hunt for children at KidzCare Parkes, who discovered a rainbow and a pot of gold treat after solving the final clue!

Help Fijian Cyclone Victims: Parkes Fijians Association are raising funds, school supplies and other goods to help a Fijian school which was devastated by Cyclone Winston in February. The friends and members of the Parkes Fijians Association would like to make a difference to Nasautoka Village. It is said to be one of the most affected village in the Wainibuka area, losing 30 houses including the school which was their evacuation centre. There is a Parkes connection with the Nasautoka District School, through the Parkes Christian School. Last year some students, teachers and parents from Parkes Christian School visited this school on a missionary trip. A cake stall will be held on Saturday 2nd April from 9am until 12pm outside Parkes Stationery and Office Furniture. All
monies raised from the stall will be going directly to the school to assist with replenishing school supplies for the children and teachers. Also on this day, Parkes Stationery and Office Furniture will be a drop off donation point for goods such as books, toys and clothes. School supplies such as pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, notebooks and the like would be greatly appreciated. Monetary donations can also be made.

SPACEMEN LADIES LEAGUE TAG

March 23, 2016 By Maggi Barnard

20th March saw the Leagues Club’s Spacies League Tag ladies have their first hit up against Group XI competitors. With 14 ladies named on the game sheet for the day they had fronted to play 2 games and with a withdrawal of one team ended up playing 3. The nerves were high on both benches in the first game against Forbes. Our ladies didn’t take long to open the scoring with Nangar Gem’s Claudia Lovett’s first try and her second following soon after.

Spacies third try went to La Bella’s Sally Dwyer. Forbes opened the second half with their only try and Dippin dots Emma Bailey answered with a try on the restart. Successful conversion by BMJC’s (The Moran Boy’s) Ella-J Harris took the final score to Parkes 18 Forbes 4.

In game 2 the Spacies filled the gap to face Wellington with nerves a thing of the past now they had found their feet. In a very fast paced game Claudia Lovett scored 2 tries, Sally Dwyer scored 2 tries, Parkes GP’s Hannah Kelly 1 try, Nicko’s Bricklaying Nat Gardner 1 try, Parkes Mensland’s Katie Caldwell 1 try and BMJC’s Ella-J Harris 6 successful conversions. Final score Parkes 40 Wellington 0. The last game of the day was against an unknown Cyms. Parkes played the last 3 minutes with only 10 players and defended well to leave the score Parkes 0 Cyms 0.

The Parkes Spacemen executive along with the league tag team would like to thank their major Guernsey sponsor,
Parkes Services Club and Sleeve sponsors Simply Bellissima by Kim, Cunninghams IGA Parkes, Nicko’s Bricklaying, Parkes GP, Bunnamagoo Wines, BMJC (The Moran boy’s),La Bella, Dippin Dots, Parkes Mensland, Thd studio, Parkes Railway Bowling Club, Parkes Leagues Club and Nangar Gems.
