Why do people need to buy a ticket to see Overture?

March 18, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Ebony Bland, Oscar Hendry and Isabella Tencate:

Ebony: If you like music it would be a great night to come and enjoy it.

Oscar: To come and enjoy the music, and to support the music community after COVID.

Isabella: It will be good to come and see the concert as there will be lots of people with talent and they will be putting it on show, and it will be good to listen to.

Louise Moore, Kerrie Peden and Sherree Rosser:

Louise: The repertoire has something for everyone, it is definitely not just opera music! It includes some of the most famous and popular songs of musical theatre and more.

Kerrie: It will be one of the most amazing shows in Parkes ever with professional soloists and a massed choir and orchestra including children and adults from Parkes and all over the Central West.

Sherree: You will definitely be tapping your feet and go away feeling exhilarated. There will be enough opportunity to sing along, especially with the special encore song of a popular pop artist.

What does your newly attained Australian citizenship mean to you?

March 11, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Subakthi Fernando: (Subakthi is from Sri Lanka. She first arrived in Australia in 2016, and is a doctor.) It’s a great privilege to be part of the community. I’m so happy as we’ve started a new life here and our two daughters were born here. It is just wonderful and we are so blessed.

Suliana Naqau: (Suliana is from Fiji and first arrived in Australia in 2009. She teaches at the Parkes Christian School.) It means a lot. It has been our aim since we first arrived in Australia in 2009. We’ve been looking forward to this day ever since, as we love this country and its people.

Ratri Dey, Atanu Paul with Jeeshnu Paul (22 months): Ratri and Atanu are from Bangladesh and first arrived in Australia in 2016. Atanu is a doctor at Currajong Street Medical Centre.) Today is a day of excitement mixed with joy as this is the final conclusion of our journey that started in 2014. We can now commit to making more of a contribution to the community and making a difference as responsible and accountable citizens.

Emmanuel Cooper holding Chloe and Fortunate: (Emmanuel is from Liberia and works as a civil construction operator.) It’s overwhelming, and a long-awaited event as I’ve been here since 2010. It’s giving me new hope in life, and I can travel around without worrying about visas. I’m so lucky to have so many good people around me.

Theozeus Melosantos, Cristina Espinitu, Mariah Melosantos, Alfonso Melosantos: (Cristina is from the Philippines, and is an administration officer. Her daughter Mariah is a full-time student at TAFE and works as a carer, and her sons Theozeus and Alfonso are at Parkes High School.) It is a privilege with lots of benefits that will lead to better opportunities and a better future. We moved to Parkes in 2019 from Adelaide to be with family, and we love it here.

What do you enjoy about autumn?

March 4, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Allan Wright: It is the change of season and transition period. I enjoy the changing colours and leaves falling and that the weather is not as extreme.

Where were you born? In Parkes.

Were you named after anyone? No.

Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of? Winning a couple of grand finals with Reedy Creek Cricket Club.

What historical moment stands out most in your memory? Watching the Sydney Swans win their first AFL Grand final in 2005.

What is the greatest risk you have ever taken? Letting my daughter drive the header.

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? I’d buy a couple of ton of Super to put the crop in.

When are you happiest? When I am playing or watching sport… so my wife says.

Our Gal – Judy Kross

February 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Where were you born? I am a Parkes local – I attended Parkes East Public School and Parkes High School.

Were you named after anyone? No, my dad picked my name – my daughter and I share Maree as our middle names.

Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of? I am proud of what my family and I have achieved through the squash centre. Personally, completing my uni degree via distance and of course my three kids make me extremely proud.

What’s the single best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Don’t worry about it until it happens.

What’s the greatest risk you’ve ever taken? Leaving a job after 10 years to run a squash centre!

What are the three things you would take to a deserted island? Tent, fishing rod and good book. I think I could quite enjoy myself!

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? Our family dream is to watch a professional squash match in Egypt. Squash is their national sport and the courts are made completely of glass right in front of the pyramids – so a holiday to Egypt would be on the cards.

When are you happiest? We travel a lot for squash, and as much as we love it, it is nice when we have a weekend at home with nowhere to be. It makes me happy to let the kids experience things I loved as a kid growing up in Parkes – fishing and yabbying are favourites at the moment.

Meet David Heins…

February 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

MEET DAVID HEINS… I came to Parkes some years ago when I was the senior construction engineer for the new NorthParkes underground mine. The company I worked for, SKM, had the EPCM contract to install the materials handling system. I came back again last year as a senior project engineer on the Parkes Bypass working for Transport NSW. The construction is done by the contractor, Georgiou. I really like Parkes. It is a very friendly town. My re-interest in music started two years ago when I had a go of my son’s trumpet. This led to lessons. Further to this I sensed that music bands, especially in country areas, have a real Australian feel about them and being part of it is enjoyable. The social side of the band has also been a revelation with new friendships formed. A good band needs a good music leader, and Parkes is fortunate to have Duncan Clement (left in photo with David Heins).
