Our Gal – Shania Sarsfield Miss Priscilla 2020

April 20, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Where were you born? Wellington NSW.

Were you named after anyone? The name Shania came from my Mum being a Shania Twain fan, and the midwife who helped to deliver me was also named Shania.

What did you enjoy the most about being Miss Priscilla? It’s so hard to pick just one, but visiting the nursing homes warmed my heart. Overall, I enjoyed my role as the Elvis fans are very passionate and it’s amazing to see how it brings everyone together to celebrate!

What is your favourite Elvis song? I get asked that a lot, and I’m pretty sure the answer changes every time! There are so many great songs, and it just depends on what I’m feeling at the time. At the moment I’ve been jamming to “All Shook Up”.

Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of? I’m very proud of being crowned Miss Priscilla and so grateful for the experience, but another accomplishment is that I’m in my last year of studies to become a registered nurse and I cannot wait to go out into the world and start my career.

What historical moment stands out most in your memory? The fight for social equality and women’s rights. Women in NSW gained the right to vote in 1902. This moment has guided women closer to equality in all aspects of life. From a time when women weren’t even able to drink in a bar!

What are the three things you would take to a deserted island? A hammock, a good book and a lychee mojito!

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? I would probably send it to the flood effected families.

There are some amazing Youth Week activities on offer in Parkes and the learn to skate workshop on Sunday was a great way to start the school holidays. (Photo: R Gallacher)

Children from Parkes Early Childhood Centre join in with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star at the Blue-scope Orchestra performance.

The Bluescope Youth Orchestra from the Wollongong Conservatorium gave a special performance to the little ones on Monday morning at the Cooke Park Pavilion, and another free show on Monday night.

Khan Jackson – Vice-captain Holy Family Primary School

How old are you? 12 years.

Were you named after anyone? No, I don’t think so.

What three things would you like to pack in your lunch box every day? Popper, packet of chips, fruit.

If you could choose any job in the world, what would you do? Police officer.

If you could invent something, what would it be? Device that gets me to the skate park instantly.

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? I’d probably renovate our house and give the rest to my family.

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done? I jumped off a high bridge into the water.

If you could meet any historical person, who would that be? Albert Einstein.

What makes you feel like dancing? Not much.

If you found a genie, what would you wish for? Money for scooter parts.

What do you think of the set-up in Cooke Park for Overture tonight?

April 8, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Wilbur Harris with Sarah Harris: It’s great! We’ve mainly come to see our daughter in the choir. We hope this will draw more acts like this to Parkes in future.

Chloe MacRae and Kristy Lamond: It is just great. So good for people to see something professional and to have the children be part of it. The atmosphere is very relaxed and it’s all looking really nice.

Ellie O’Donoghue with Jim: It is an awesome setup and a great asset for Parkes. We can’t wait to see what other shows will be on in Parkes. Having our daughter in the choir tonight is a bonus.

Soloist Aimee Ross (13) from Parkes on stage with Lucy Durack singing ‘I know it’s today’ from Shrek. Holly Hare from Bathurst also sang with them.

Lucy Durack with 12-year-old soloist Lexi Herden from Forbes. In her first ever performance before such a big audience Lexi sang “When I Gro Up’ from the musical Matilda.

Jessica Westcott, who grew up in Parkes, was the crea-tive director and performed the aria from Puccini “O mio Babbino Caro”.

The new Cooke Park Pavilion looked beautiful all lit up and filled with 170 performers!

What are the benefits of the free trishaw rides for our community?

April 1, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Robert Tinker: It is good to get the elderly and less mobile out of their homes to enjoy some company, meet people and having a chat. As a pilot it is a good opportunity for me to help and do my share of community volunteering (after being in the fire brigade for 44 years), whilst getting some fresh air and exercise.

Angela Wang: I only arrived in Parkes in July last year and was looking to do some volunteering. It is really good to give people the opportunity to do something that makes them happy, and that makes me happy as well. I would love to see more people come and join in.

Stephan Klein: It is for all ages, particularly those who miss out on outside activities. It is great to help them connect with the outside environment and other people. I worked in nursing homes and visit nursing homes and people who are isolated. The trishaw rides are so important for their wellbeing.

Our Young Bloke – Adrian Day

Adrian Day – Captain Holy Family Primary School

How old are you? 11 years

Were you named after anyone? My name is a combination of my grandparents’ names on my mum’s side of the family.

What three things would you like to pack in your lunch box every day? Garlic bread, scrolls and cupcakes.

If you could choose any job in the world, what would you do? Electrical engineer.

If you could invent something, what would it be? A machine that does all your schoolwork for you.

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? Give half to my parents and then go to the computer shop and get a MacBook and new phone for dad and keep the rest for savings.

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done? Riding the Wild Mouse in Luna Park.

If you could meet any historical person, who would that be? Shane Warne.

What makes you feel like dancing? Listening to great music when out with friends.

If you found a genie, what would you wish for? I would wish for a big lake in Parkes to take the boat out on.

As fuel prices keep on increasing, what changes can you make to your life to save on fuel?

March 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Benji Redfern (Year 7): I ride my bike everywhere and catch the bus to school. I will encourage others to start using their bikes more often.

Kaitlyn Neems (Year 12): I have my P plates and teenagers like driving around a lot. I think we can do less of that and start doing jobs together to save on costs. We should also look at taking the shortest route to go somewhere and start walking or riding bikes more.

Lexi Paradowski (Year 5): It is kind of hard for me as we live a bit out of town, which makes it hard to cycle or walk anywhere. Dad is very lucky to get his fuel for free from work.
