Parkes Phoenix

The date on ‘Twosday’ this week was very special: 22/02/2022. Do you have a special date or number that tells a story or have a significant meaning?

February 25, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Colleen Mitchell: My wedding day this year on 25th November will be very special as we are celebrating our 50th anniversary after getting married in 1972.

Sylvia Glendenning: The 11th of January has turned out to be an important date in my life as all sorts of things have happened on this date. I got my driver’s licence, and I went overseas to name but two events.

Adrianne Brown: I like the number 33 as it is the new address of the CanAssist shop in Court Street, and we’ve been very lucky to find this venue. It has been such a good move and the shop is doing fantastic.

What do you like about Parkes and what do you think is missing?

February 18, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Abby Blair with Elsie Pritchard (11 months): I like the supportive community, and would love to see a waterpark and indoor play area.

Hannah Hawker with Joseph (6 months) and Alfie (2): I like all the parks with play areas, and the kids’ area at the pool is great. The CUC is a fantastic addition to Parkes. I’d love a big, indoor play area in town.

Simran Villella: I like the sense of community, the accessibility to so many amazing things and the lack of traffic. I would like to see some more resources going into early education for young children and more structured activities for kids aged 0 – 5.

Our Bloke – Michael Thomas

February 18, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Where were you born? Wellington NSW, just down the road.

Were you named after anyone? We had a pet dog named Mick, my parents swear that I’m not named after him.

Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of? I’ve bought a block of land here in Parkes where I’m hoping to build a home. It’s a long process but they say it’s all worth it.

What historical moment stands out most in your memory? It would have to be the Sydney Olympics for me. I was only quite young but it was definitely something that started my passion for all things sport.

What’s the single best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Don’t stress about the things you have no control over.

What’s the greatest risk you’ve ever taken? I ate some seafood that was a bit touch-and-go when travelling around Florida in a motorhome. The gamble did not pay off.

What are the three things you would take to a deserted island? Fishing rod, golf sticks and couple of cartons of beer. In my head this is a holiday and not a fight for survival.

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? Easily. If I had any doubts about it, I’m sure a few drinks down at the pub with mates would knock what’s left over. In reality, if I didn’t put it towards the house my Mum would give me a good clip around the ears.

When are you happiest? Anytime I’m with family and friends

What do you love about volunteering at or taking part in the weekly Northparkes Oval Parkrun?

February 11, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

John and Jenny Short:

John (volunteered 20 times): It is a healthy and happy way of helping the community, and you get to meet lots of new people.

Jenny (volunteered 22 times): It is good fun and you get out in the fresh air that makes you feel so much better. I would absolutely recommend it to everyone. It’s the best time you can have on a Saturday morning and there is always coffee too!

Sarah Hartin with Rhylee (3) and Tony Melhuish:

Sarah (ran 26 events): I love running and the Parkes community. Parkrun is great for promoting good health in our town.

Tony (walked 32 events): I started doing it to help me loose some weight. I’ve not only managed to shed 20kg, but it is a great opportunity to do something with the family too.

Our Bloke – Marc Payne

February 4, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Where were you born? I was born and raised in Parkes.

Were you named after anyone? No, my parents liked the name Mark but spelt Marc.

Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of? My family and of course my photography achievements – my work being picked in the top 101 portraits in the world for 2021.

What historical moment stands out most in your memory? The COVID pandemic and I would say 9/11.

What’s the single best piece of advice you’ve ever received? You have one chance at life, make the most of it and enjoy it.

What’s the greatest risk you’ve ever taken? Taking 12 months off to travel the globe and working in a foreign country.

What are the three things you would take to a deserted island? My camera, plenty of water and a hat.

If you had to spend $10,000 today, how would you spend it? I would buy camera gear. You can never have enough camera gear.

When are you happiest? When I’m with my family, and of course behind the camera!

What do you think multi-culturalism brings to Parkes?

February 4, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Mel ten Cate: It brings so much. People from other countries bring their perspectives, experiences, culture, food, music, fashion, dances and more. There is so much we can learn and grow from. All of them enrich our lives and understanding.

Dominic Rolfe: Multi-culturalism broadens our horizons and it benefits country NSW as it brings new skills to name but one example.

Roel ten Cate: It brings an opportunity for all different cultures to come together in a melting pot. Food, culture, dances, way of living – all these different customs improve all of our lives.

What do you think should be the message of Australia Day?

January 28, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

Jacob Cass: It should be a message of reconnecting with the past and reconciliation to build a more unified future.

Margot Jolly: It should be about inclusiveness. I think having Australia Day on the 26th of Janu-ary is not inclusive, so let’s reflect it in Australia Day. Every day is a great day to be Australian, so why not draw a date from a hat. The day does not necessarily need a special meaning, as long as it has nothing to do with the British monarchy or any wars.

Jenny Kinghorn: I believe all people are equal and we should all treat each other that way. Australia Day is where we can meet each other in the middle.

Australia Day Events In Parkes

January 28, 2022 By Maggi Barnard

It was a lovely cool morning for the community walk of about 3.5km starting from Cooke Park with lots of pooches joining in.

The Leonard family came all “hatted’ up for the kite festival at the Northparkes Oval. They are Anthony with Alfie (3) and Kira with Teddy (4).

The four-year-old twins Andie and Ellie Fitzpatrick helped to put some colour in the sky with their beautiful kites.

The breeze was not strong enough to get the big kites in the air, but plenty of lift for the lighter ones to fill the sky above the oval.

Parkes Action Club members who helped to feed the crowd after the community walk are (L-R) William Olson, Mark Olson, Gary Somers, Anne Steel and Tim Keith.

Parkes Action Club members cooked the free breakfast for the walkers in Cooke Park. David Knights and Warren Edwards made sure not to burn the brekkie!

The all Australian Car Display at Cooke Park is hosted by the Parkes Antique Motor Club every year.

The Australia Day Ambassador Jane Rutter not only gave an inspiring speech, but also played two songs on her flutes much to the delight of the audience. Parkes Shire Concert Band members Rhonda Redenbach, Ellen Tom and Duncan Clement were delighted to meet Jane.
