Elliot Takes Sheridan Memorial

An excellent field contested last Saturday’s Owen Crowley & The Corner Boys- sponsored 18 hole Stableford event at the Parkes Golf Club.

Solid scoring was certainly the order of the day that also saw members contesting the Terry Sheridan Memorial Trophy.

Three generations of the Sheridan fam- ily descend on the Golf Club annually to remember their beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, the late Terry Sheridan. The family matriarch, Kim Sheridan thanked the club for allow- ing them the privilege of honouring Terry, prior to announcing Lindsay Elliott as this year’s recipient of the major award after he returned a solid 41 points.

Ball winners on the day went to 40 Dave Whitfield, 39 Col Barker and Tony “Scrub- ba” Evans, 38 Ian Hendry, 37 Brian L. Hogan, Robert Hey and Jake Hodge, 36 Charlie Allen, Wayne Tucker, Tim Burke, Ron Hetherington and Matt Lawryk and surviving the countback on 35 points was Tom Casey.

Last Saturday the ladies contested an 18 hole 4Ball versus Par event, which also acted as the qualifying round of the Golf NSW/Keno NSW 4Ball Handicap Championship.

Leading home the field were sisters Kaye Jones and Lynne Guise recording a solid and impressive +8 score line to run out comfortable 5 shot victors. Runners up were the Judy McCabe and Leone Steven- son pairing on +3 with Denise Charlton and Lesley Fisher in the minor placing on +2, just 1 shot ahead of Sue Holman and Anita Medcalf.

Nearest the pin awards: Colleen Flynn – Lyn Rogan 1st hole; Judy McCabe -Parkes Pharmacy 4th hole; Cathy Kelly – Telescope Tyres & Batteries 6th hole; Anita Medcalf and Margaret Hogan – Parkes Services Club 11th hole and the Railway Hotel 15th hole respectively.

Tomorrow members will contest an 18 hole Par event for the Droughtbusters Golfing Party trophies in all three grades. The day is also the 1st round of the annual Frank Donnelly Perpetual Trophy.

The Ladies will contest an 18 hole Sta- bleford event for the Sue Holman Trophy.

There were no bowls played this week due to rain. Next week the first round of the club championship pairs will be played with the draw as follows: Brenda Davies, Betsy Johnstone vs Gwenda Carty, Cherie Frame. Junior Hockey Rego This Weekend

All children aged four to 18 are invited to register this weekend to play hockey. Registration is open tomorrow from 10am to 1pm at the Northparkes Oval, and on Sunday 12.30 to 2.30pm at the Stephen Davies Hockey Field, Cheney Park sports complex. The gala days include registrations, coaching clinics and a sausage sizzle. To register, complete the form (available online at www.parkeshockey.org.au or from the Parkes Junior Hockey Facebook page) and submit at any of the registration days above. Payment of fees must be made online at www.parkeshockey.org.au .

Click on REGISTRATION, then REGISTER. All fees include individual registration and affiliation with Hockey NSW, insurance and all turf and umpire fees. Fees are based on age as at 1st January 2017: under 7 – $85; under 11 – $95 and aged 12 to18 – $105. Young Cats Show Claws

The Parkes Spacemen Rugby League Club had its first team on the field last weekend when the women’s leaguetag team joined 19 other sides in the Western Leaguetag challenge. With strong teams from Bathurst, Orange and Blayney, coupled with the loss of a large number of last year’s squad, the Spacecats were expected to make a modest showing.

They first defeated the Burrengong Bears 16-0, thanks to a scintillating debut from wizkid Tyannua Goolagong. From the famous Condobolin area football family, Goolagong will be a favourite at Pioneer Oval this year. Parkes then defeated a plucky Canowindra side, and registered a third win against the Portland Colts side. Rookie India Draper
showed outstanding skill and vision. Claire Barber dazzled the crowd with her toughness and finesse.

A final pool match against double challenge champions, Orange Cyms determined the semi-finalists. It was all Orange with 75% possession of the ball, but they could not crack the Spacecats’ line ending in a nil all draw and a standing ovation. The gutsy Cats went through to the finals meeting the 2016 champions. With 12 of the 15 Parkes players under 20, they probably weren’t expected to repel the slick combination of the Bathurst Pats. With 50 seconds remaining, Pats broke the Parkes line for the first time, resulting in a 6-0 victory.

Rare Achievement For Grandmother And Granddaughter

Parkes hockey celebrated this week with the announcement of two NSW junior representatives and to top it off an Australian masters representative. Koby Johnstone was selected for the NSW U15 state boys team and Gracey Jones for the NSW U15 Blues girls team. Koby, as a midfielder, and Gracey, as a goalkeeper, will both play in the U15 Australian National Championships in Moorebank from 5th to 13th April. The two promising 14-yearold players impressed the NSW selectors across three trial weekends held twice in Newcastle and once in Bathurst. They also
took part in the Hockey NSW Centre of Development program during the off season.

Gracey’s week became even more special when her grandmother, Maureen Massey, was named in the Australian O60’s women’s team – as a goalkeeper! It is extremely rare for a grandmother and granddaughter to play the same competitive sport, both as goalkeepers. To be selected in high-level representative teams in the same week is outstanding.

Maureen’s team will tour the UK in June competing in the Home Championships in Dublin, Ireland, as well as various international matches in Wales and England. Maureen will be representing Australia in master’s hockey for the fifth time. Hockey also seems to be in Koby’s genes as his grandfather, Noel Johnstone recently represented Australia in Masters hockey in the O65’s and O70’s divisions. Noel played in the Australian O70’s men’s team at the
Masters World Cup in Newcastle last year, as well as World Cups in South Africa and London previously.

Liz Bowls Her Name Onto Champions Roll

Rhona Went won the Parkes Women’s Bowling Club Singles this week. She played Liz Byrne in the final in a magnificently played game all the way with 24 -24 on the last end.

In other club news Parkes played Forbes this week in the No2 Pennants and won 37 – 30. The decider was played yesterday to determine the winner.

In a game of social triples, Flo Riseborough, Chris Cox, and Chris Curteis defeated Di Greenhalgh, Frances Charlton and Minnie Riordan.

Nominations for club championship pairs will close 21st March at 12pm. Nominations for CWD pairs will close on 7th April.

Next week Tuesday we will play a Scroungers competition with prizes to be won. The next Trading Table and Bring a Friend Day will be on 21st March. New players and visitors always welcome to play Tuesday mornings.

Doubles To Rodgers And Stait

The Telescope Tyres & Batteries March Monthly Medal was contested in ideal conditions last Saturday. Excellent scores were turned out with Mitch McGlashan firing a brilliant 3 under par round of 68 to take the A grade scratch by seven shots. In the handicap section Robert Cheney showed his potential with a blistering 66 nett.

In the minor grades Dub Rodgers recorded a double in taking out the B grade scratch and handicap after firing an impres- sive 82 for a 67 nett. In the C grade Dale Stait recorded a blistering 86 for an equally impressive 67 nett.

In other awards Paul Thomas fired a solid 68 nett to take out the veterans division while Denis Howard required just 24 putts in winning the Griffins Leading Edge putting competition.

Ball winners from Saturday’s competition went to 68 Mitch McGlashan & Paul Thom- as, 70 Peter Picker, Luke Clarke, Richard Hutchison and Tim Burke, 71 Reg Davi- son, Brent Timmins, Sam Turner, Brian L. Hogan, Peter Bristol, Wayne Powter and John Pearce and surviving the countback on 72 were Lachlan Buesnell, Tony Evans, Troy Thomson and Mark Job.

Concussion

With pre-season training for winter sports commencing, it is a relevant time to discuss sports related head injuries and consider what can be done to prevent or minimize the impact a concussion injury has on an athlete. In the medical world, a concussion is considered a mild traumatic brain injury.

Concussions occur not only from direct contact of the head with a solid object but also when indirect forces cause the brain to move rapidly within the skull such as a fall on the buttocks or a whiplash injury. Contrary to popular belief, you can sustain a concussion without losing consciousness.

Common symptoms of concussion include headaches, memory and concentration dif- ficulty, decreased balance and coordination, drowsiness, vomiting and light or sound sensitivity. The ability to perform normal activities with the same speed, reaction time and precision as prior to the injury is often significantly altered. When managed appropriately most signs and symptoms are temporary and resolve within seven to 10 days, however complications can occur including prolonged duration of symptoms and increased susceptibility to further injury. There is also growing concern about the potential long-term consequences of multiple concussions.

The brain needs time to heal and rest after a concussion. This includes rest from both physical activity and cognitive loads. Returning to sport too early increases the chances of another concussion.

It is worth considering performing baseline testing such as a SCAT-3 or King Devick Test in the pre-season to establish a benchmark offering comparison when an athlete has sustained a concussion. This helps determine when they are ready to return to sport.

Colourful Teams Touchdown For Silver Jubilee Carnival

From Bankstown to Brisbane, from Canada Bay to Condoblin, from Lake Macquarie to Port Stephens, from Willoughby to Wagga Wagga, from Dubbo to Parkes, a constel- lation of council workers charged onto Cheney Park last Saturday for the 25th Local Government Annual Touch Football Carnival.Mixed A Division Grand Final: Parkes Shire Council Mixed narrowly touched vic- tory with a 5 to 4 win against Brisbane Red- lands. Michael Murphy from Parkes Shire Mixed scored Player of the Match.

Mixed B Division Grand Final: The Port Stephens Sharks attacked the Storm Troopers (Wagga Wagga City Council) to claim victory with an 8 to 7 win. Darth Vader – AKA Wagga Wagga City Council’s Brett took The Player of the Match.

Men’s A Division Grand Final: Loyalties were torn when two home teams went head to head. Parkes Shire Council Men’s narrowly beat the Parkes Elvi to the Green- wood Cup, scoring the winning try after a 3-all draw. Jack Elliot from the Parkes Shire Council Men’s team was named the Player of the Match.

Men’s B Division Grand Final: Willoughby City Council put the dogs out, beating the Dubbo Dogz 3 to 2. John Woodward from Willoughby City Council took the Player of the Match honours.

Best Dressed Team: The Wagga Wagga City Council’s Storm Troopers were out gunned by Brisbane-Redlands’s Bavarian- inspiredoutfits,whichwereaccompanied by a novelty costume change.

Wagga Wagga City Council was pre- sented with a Sir Henry Parkes Medallion in recognition of their participation in all 25 National Annual Local Government Touch Football Carnivals.
