Crazy Hair And Sock Day

June 21, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

This Saturday is crazy sock and hair day. Parkes Netball is asking all players, umpires, coaches, support crews and fans to go bonkers with bouffants, and silly with socks to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. The annual event raises funds for The Kids Cancer Project. This year the aim is to reach $60,000 in NSW. Gold coin donations will be collected at Parkes Netball Association throughout the day on 23rd June.

Boars Bring Back Bounty

June 21, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Last Saturday was a day of much celebration for the Parkes Boars as they hosted their annual Ladies Day and came away with two good results.

Second Grade: Parkes Boars 5 – 5 CSU Bathurst: The Parkes Boars 2nd Grade finally gave the performance Ethen Keseff has been wanting and demanding as they faced a strong second grade team in CSU. Low scoring but not lacking in ambition and performance levels, a few errors and steel defensive lines kept it low. Jake Elliot shimmied and crashed over the line to level the scores.

First Grade: Parkes Boars 29 – 17 CSU Bathurst: The first half was predominantly in CSU’s hands with the majority of field position dictated by the boot. The Boars, with a clear game plan, were able to limit the majority of backline play. Dylan Phillipa took the first try, but CSU was 10-5 up. The Boars quickly asserted control in the second half. The forward pack tore the scrum to pieces. The Parkes backs had never had it so easy. Ben Ryan (brother of Parkes rugby idol Dan Ryan) was able to touch down for the first of his plethora of tries. That was the story for the rest of the game. Parkes Boars’ back decimated the CSU pack in all departments allowing Lloyd Rodgers to link up with fellow Englishman Ben Powlay. The dream duo constantly threatened the defensive line with Lloyd scoring.

Ben Ryan found himself lost on the wing, but put the icing on the cake of his man of the match performance to score his third try and become the top try scorer for the season.

Mudgee Wombats vs Parkes Boars

June 7, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

A rallied Wombat side proved too strong for a weakened Parkes Boars side last weekend.

Second Grade: Mudgee 28 – 12 Parkes This game featured a few club debuts, and with Mudgee Seconds near the top of the table, they were pushed consistently across the 80 minutes. This game captured the crowd with both teams taking the ball up the pitch and displaying hearty defensive performances.

First Grade: Mudgee 41 – 27 Parkes Parkes Boars were up for 90% of the game, but travelling away to Mudgee is always a tough feat. With several key players absent and others sporting injuries it was an uphill battle from the off. The score was always in the Boars favour, yet a combination of some seriously poor officiating decisions which were rudely and poorly explained (my opinion), combined with a gritty Mudgee forwards display and dented morale meant the Wombats could never be truly shaken or put to bed. Through these factors and a large home crowd smelling blood the comeback felt inevitable and crossing the line in the last few minutes sealed the boars fate. Defeated but not disheartened the Boars enjoyed winning the boat race. The Parkes Boars have a weekend off and return on 16th June at home to play CSU Bathurst.

Parkes Dragons Endeavour To Become A Great Club

May 31, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Dragon Boat Club could not have asked for a better launch at Lake Endeavour last Saturday when about 300 people turned up on a glorious autumn day. Supported by members of regional dragon boat clubs from Bathurst, Orange, Forbes and Dubbo, a queue started forming after the official proceedings as just about everyone
wanted a turn to paddle on the shimmering blue water.

Town Crier Tim Keith started the official launch calling the large crowd together. Mayor Ken Keith led the welcome saying: “We are absolutely delighted to be here for the launch of the Parkes Dragon Boat Club on Lake Endeavour.”

Geoff Anderson’s did a special Wiradjuri welcome to country and said the closest translation for dragon in Wiradjuri was Miirin gadhang – angry lizard. Fortunately there were only beaming Parkes Dragons, and happy “new recruits” as they stepped off the boat after an exhilarating paddle.

The traditional Chinese ceremony of Awakening of the Dragon was read by steering committee member Debra Tooley, with Leisal Walters dotting the eyes of the dragon and wishing well to its crews. Parkes Dragons’ coach Warren Edwards read the ancient paddlers’ oath: “I promise to take part in this sport showing mutual respect and abiding by the rules that govern, with the dragon spirit in heart and mind, for the glory of the dragon boat and the honour of all teams.”

To conclude the ceremony, the awakened dragon was ‘shown around’ in a circular paddle to introduce it to the spirits of the water in its new home of Lake Endeavour, that is coincidentally shaped like a dragon. Parkes Dragons’ President Bill Thomas thanked the Parkes Steering Committee for their great work in hosting such a triumphant
day. He also thanked the Parkes community for their interest and support and the regional Dragon Boat community for their help.

The Parkes Dragons will train on Lake Endeavour on Sunday mornings. It is wise to check in with the Parkes Dragon Boat Club Facebook page each week before heading out to the Lake, or get on the mailing list by emailing billnbeth@bigpond.com.
