Shoosh – Just Let Them Play

May 24, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Netball was proud to be part of the Shoosh for Kids awareness week last Saturday with the aim to encourage the provision of positive environments for players. The message is ongoing and should always apply: “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”.

This week we celebrate National Volunteer Week to say thank you to all the volunteers. This year’s theme is “Give a little. Change a lot”. We are still short of umpires, and Parkes Netball encourages everyone to volunteer. If you are interested, please see one of the committee members.

Hood’s Masterclass Not Enough To Stop Rhinos

May 24, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Boars played away from home for the third week in a row taking on the Dubbo Rhinos. The 2nd grade side was first out with Timmy Lawler and Ben Rathbone adding much needed experience to the youthful side, but the Rhinos managed to win the match 29-5. In the 1st grade game the Rhinos were first to score, while the Boars lost their no. 8 Jarrod Westcott after tripping over his shoelaces and dislocating his knee.

The pace and flare of the Rhinos backline was on show and they went over the line again to make it 14 – 0. In one of the most majestic pieces of play on a rugby field Dylan Hood found himself  in a position of isolation on the right hand flank. His feet went in, then away, then in, then away again. This wrong footed the three Rhino defenders and gave him room to race around the defenders and glide over the line.

The Rhinos hit back immediately before the break to make it 19 – 5. James Sellings kicked to his brother, Jonah Ruzgas produced the tackle of the season and jolt the ball free. It rolled over the try line and Dylan Hood dived on the ball for the fastest try.

Dyllan Phillips was next to a much needed try for the Boars to take it to 19-15. With only minutes on the clock Rhinos
got a turnover and snuck down the far touch line to score in the corner and signal an end to the game: 24-15.

Boars Cram Blayney Rams

May 17, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Boars proved too much for the Rams on a fresh and bitter Saturday in the deep depths of Blayney. In the feature game of the day the Boars came away the winners 31 – 24.

The rams were first to strike and landed an early try. The Boars showed dominant midfield play from Rodgers, Powlay, and Marika Koroivui, and marched forward giving space for Dylan Phipps to dash down the line. He passed to Jim Sellings to score. Rodgers’ conversion made it 7-7 Blayney crossed over the line a second time, and then generously gave the ball straight back for the Boars to mount an attack.

Toby Baigett took flight gaining 35 metres. Llyod Rodgers moved up and across the pitch before combining exquisitely with Jared Westcott who gave a short pass to Ben Powlay to break through three tackles to swan over under the posts.

The first half kept following this format. Blayney scored again, and after a chip through from Llyod Rodgers, Dylan Phipps outpaced everyone and dove on the ball to make it 21-19.

In the second half a bamboozling run from Marika took him over the line, and Rodgers converted 4 from 4. Blayney replied with a try, but with two missed conversions they were level 4 points down. Campbell Legman took the ball charging, and Josh Corney lead the pack down the field winning a penalty for the Boars.

They opted for the posts and put the game to rest. Particular mention goes to Johan Ruzgas on his first team debut, with a solid and energetic performance.

Netball Season In Full Swing

May 17, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Despite cold and windy weather last Saturday there was some hot netball action as teams got into the swing of the season. Last year’s Division 1 runners-up United McGrath’s (name change) showed potential to be booking a finals berth after only two weeks by defeating the newly formed Galaxy team. With several players new to the sport, Galaxy performed well under the guidance of coach Christine Watson.

Wildcats defeated a short-in-numbers Eagles side who had to call on several Division 2 players to fill in for injuries during the game.

The Division 2 competition is also well under way and there were wonderful games on Saturday. A big thank you to Carmel Laing, Mel Evans, Anita Morrison and Cathy Treasure for your patience as coaches. The SetGo Division continues to see many budding athletes with big smiles on their faces learning the game and skills of netball.

The Net athletes looked to have a fantastic morning. Congratulations to Lily Phillips on being awarded for her excellent pivot skills. Thanks you to the parents for helping with time keeping and the canteen.

A reminder that the AGM takes place on Monday, 21st May. If you want to see the sport of netball grow in Parkes, please come along. This week is Shoosh for Kids week, highlighting how spectators of children’s sports can impact their enjoyment. Remember to show respect to all of the children and officials.

May 10, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Eugowra Rifle Club held a successful ‘come and try me day’ last week at the Sunnyside Rifle Range with several potential new members from Parkes, Cowra and Grenfell experiencing what fullbore rifle shooting is all about.

Despite glorious conditions, a constantly changing south-west to south-east breeze blowing into shooters faces were less than ideal for good scoring at 600 yards, catching out even the most experienced shooters.

• Target Rifle B grade: John Bray 41-1 one stage only.
• Target Rifle C grade: John Farquhar 45-1, 46-1 – 91-2; Adam Wild 39-0 one stage only.
• F Standard B grade: Christian Martin 53-0, 51-2 – 104-2; Peter Harris 46-0, 56-3 – 102-3; Alan Noble 50-0, 52-1 – 102-1; Sarah Meyer 23-0 one stage only.

The Eugowra Rifle Club extends an open invitation to anyone interested to come and try the sport on any weekend. Rifles, ammunition and experienced club members are always on hand to provide tuition and pass on knowledge.

Boars Beat Bathurst

May 10, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Boars came away the happier of the two teams following two tough and physical games at University Oval, Bathurst last week.

2nd grade: CSU 17 Parkes Boars 15 A couple of absentees led to interesting playing combinations, particularly centres Rusi Lawanikula and captain Ethan Koseffe. They impressed through hard dog defence and powerful running and Rusi scored a well earnt try early on.

Going into half 5-5, the Boars came out with new energy and vigour. Debutant Hugh Woods put the Boars on the front foot and superb phases of play was rewarded with Karl Oliver crossing over under the posts to make the score 10-5.

CSU scored the equalising try, while Boars’ promising youngster Johan Ruzgas crossed over for his first try of the season, but CSU crossed over at the end, and converted to win 17-15.

1st Grade CSU 25 Parkes 29 With Dan Ryan out for the Boars, Coach Myles opted for the smallest pack to ever take to the field. The size difference upfront seemed to make no difference with Brock Mattocks and Jimmy Lowe making big tackles and burrowing runs. CSU started the scoring with a drop goal. Parkes’ Dylan Hood scored the first try.

CSU answered almost instantaneously, but Parkes refused to let them get away with well taken chances by Jim Sellings and Poncho Nash.

With a forward driving try for Campbell Earsmen, Boars were four points up. A well stolen ball from Ben Ryan and a scrummaging masterclass by Jim Lowe earned the boars a spectacular and well-deserved win.

Parkes To Host Kookaburra 8s Again In 2019!

May 3, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The award-winning Kookaburra 8s Carnival held in Parkes last weekend was once again a huge success with over 130 players from 13 teams taking part.

Kate Pulbrook, Regional Coaching Coordinator who arranged the event, announced early this week Parkes would once again host the event next year. “It was a fantastic weekend of hockey,” said Cherie Johnston, Junior Director Parkes Hockey Incorporated. “Parkes loves hosting it and we are already looking forward to next year!”

The Kookaburra 8’s is a carnival for Under 11s, playing half field games with the softer and safer Joey Ball. The 13 teams were from Parkes (8 teams), Molong (2), Orange (2) and 1 mixed team made up from players around the Western Region.

The players took part in a 90-minute skills session before their games, 19 coaches took part in a 90-minute workshop, and 21 umpires attended a workshop with umpire extraordinaire Keiren Deland.

Other events included a skills showcase for players 12 and up celebrating National Hockey Week, there were fun competitions for all K8 players, and Just Hockey was on site to answer all hockey equipment questions.

Comments on Facebook were very positive with some saying: “Congrats to all involved – well organised, great coaching tips.”, “Kids had a great time. Lots of fun.” “I want to say a big thank you to everyone for making it such an amazing weekend! Cherie and Glenn Johnstone, Kristy and Steve Collins, Jim and Sonia Daley, Aaron Huppatz, Mandy and Ian Westcott and all the coaches and canteen helpers as well as Kieren Deland for the umpire development workshop,” said Kate.
