Boars Begin With A Win

April 12, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes Boars have opened their New Holland Agriculture Cup account with a double header win against rivals Dubbo Rhinos. The Boars second-grade team faced the Rhinos, under the coaching of Ethan Kosef. The challenge this year was to start strong and the team didn’t disappoint. Mitch Hutchings crossed for the first of his three tries, then kicked the conversion to give Parkes the lead within the first five minutes. Ben Rathbone’s defence on the line was instrumental in keeping Rhinos scoreless for the match, with the Boars final score being 33.

First points on the board for the firstgrade game went to the Rhinos, due to a Boars handling error. The Boars, coached by Joshua Miles, soon evened the scores thanks to Ben Ryan’s tries, along with the combined strength of the Boars front row holding well. A penalty scrum to Parkes on the 15m took the half time score to 22-5.

In the second-half, the tempo of the game increased, and tempers started to flair. The Boars tenacity was awarded when Rodgers successfully landed 3 penalty goals, then crossed undefended under the posts in the final moments to seal the match with a final score of 43-22.

Players player and winner of the Old Boys Jersey went to Sam Davis on Debut. The 2018 New Holland Agriculture player of the day was awarded to Mitch Hutchings from Boars second grade.

A vote of thanks to the referees Chris Reynolds (2nds) and Paul Hannock (1sts) for recognising the very hot conditions and allowing extra drink breaks for both teams. Next weekend the Boars travel to Narromine’s Cale Oval to face the Gorillas. Narromine had a strong win over Mudgee Wombats in their first round so this will be a
big match for both teams. Seconds kick off at 1:50pm with First at 3:15pm.

Running For Bums

April 5, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Early last week some people may have noticed a woman running along the highways between Forbes and Parkes, or between Parkes and Peak Hill, or Dubbo. Jenna Brook was passing through the Central West region of New South Wales as part of a 4,500km odyssey to start a conversation about bums, specifically to raise awareness about Bowel Cancer.

“80 Australians die every week from bowel cancer, making it our nation’s second biggest cancer killer. If you talk to friends and family about bowel cancer, it is amazing how many have stories to tell,” said Jenna.

“Bowel cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable. Treatment has a 90% success rate if detected early. Currently, only about 40% are caught in time.” Jenna was spurred to commence her campaign, dubbed “Running for Bums”, after learning these statistics.

Jenna’s grandfather survived bowel cancer late in his life. The family took the matter seriously and openly discussed the issue. “I have grown up knowing that my risk is elevated. I’ve now had three colonoscopies since I was 25, as a preventative measure.

The doctors have removed 14 polyps as a result. The process is painless.” “Many people are still too embarrassed to report symptoms to their doctors and push for screening. Still more people avoid discussing bowel cancer within a family setting because it seems undignified. However, the fact is that 1 in 4 people diagnosed have a family history of bowel cancer.”

Jenna’s journey began on 17th February from the southernmost end of Tasmania and will see her reach the tip of Cape York by early June, averaging more than 40km per day.

As at 27 March, Jenna has already travelled over 1200km and raised more than $20,000 for Bowel Cancer Australia.

Tee Time

March 28, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Ladies, have you ever wanted to play a bit of golf, but don’t feel like joining a ‘serious’ club, or taking part in competitions? Why don’t you try the Parkes Ladies Social Golfers? The Parkes Ladies Social Golfers meet every Tuesday and Friday morning for a round of 9 holes before heading for a coffee, often at Cedar’s Café in the Greenparkes Garden Centre.

“Everyone is welcome, just come along and have a hit,” said Lois Godden. “Bring a friend, have a cuppa afterwards, we’re a friendly and fun-loving group of ladies.” Originally there were two separate groups, the Cygnets, who met on Tuesdays, and the Pitch and Putters who met on Fridays.

Several years ago, they combined into one group. There are currently 22 members, with anywhere between 3 and 15 turning up on any given day. “It’s not expected that you come every time, its very casual,” said Dawn Wakefield. “Our tee-off time varies according to daylight saving.”

If you’re interested in joining, tee-off starts at 8am next week. For any enquires please contact Helen Westcott on 0412 444 452.

7 PHS Swimmers Off To State

March 28, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes High School students performed with pride and passion at the Western Region swim titles in Dubbo on 15th March. The swim team, consisting of Olivia Dolbel, Nicayden Greenwood, Jordan and Liam Moody, William Lamond, Geordie Duncan, Gabriel Goodrich, Brookelyn Pinkstone and Archie Rix, performed strongly against
the cream of Western NSW swimmers.

Gabriel, Liam and Olivia swam strongly to claim second place in their 100m breaststroke finals while Nicayden recorded a personal best (pb) in his events to claim a third place in his 100m breaststroke and backstroke finals. Jordan swam several pbs, while William anchored the 200m freestyle team with a gutsy effort to claim third
place. Geordie achieved second places in the 100m butterfly, freestyle and 50m free.

The team enjoyed a great day of swimming, considering the quality of opposition, who converged from all corners of Western NSW. “I am really excited for the team heading off to state. We have improved heaps from last year,” said Nicayden Greenwood.

Olivia Dolbel spoke for the team when she was asked about swimming. “I just love it because it is great for fitness and best of all we get to socialise with our mates.”

As a result of their efforts, Liam and Jordan, Geordie, Gabriel, Olivia, Nicayden and William have been invited to contest the State Titles at Homebush Aquatic Centre in April.
