What a Team!

July 12, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes residents Bill and Beth Thomas recently received the NSW Government State Representative Award from Member for Orange Philip Donato MP. They represented the Western Region in the Australian National Dragon Boat Championship earlier this year. “We are honoured to be recognised for doing what we love doing,” said Bill and Beth. “It just shows – if we can represent our State at our ages – anyone can be an athlete. One of the best things
about this sport is that we can do it together.”

Bill and Beth were also instrumental in the formation of the recently launched Parkes Dragon Boat Club at Lake Endeavour. The club is functioning with paddling sessions taking place on Sunday mornings. “We are confident that Parkes will have a great dragon boating team, because it’s already shaping up that way.”

Finnley’s Holiday Of Dreams

July 12, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

While most students are enjoying the winter holiday, a 15-year-old Parkes boy has taken a big step in realising his dream of playing professional rugby league one day. Red Bend Catholic College student Finnley Neilsen was selected in the NSW CCC Country Rugby League U/15 side in May at the State Championships in St Marys.

This week Finnley and his team attended the famous heritage Edmund Rice Retreat at Mulgoa in Penrith from Monday for intensive training and playing. On Tuesday they travelled to play Canterbury Bankstown at Peter Moore Oval in Belmore, and on Thursday they played Illawarra at Wollongong.

Today, Friday the 13th, the highlight of the week takes place when the team plays Penrith in the curtain raiser for the Penrith vs Cronulla game at Penrith Park.

“Finnley was very excited to be selected in the team,” said his grandfather and big supporter, Ray Neilsen. He said friends and relatives from Parkes would be in the stands at Penrith Park to cheer him on today.

“We are all very proud of him,” said Ray.

While the week’s camp concludes tomorrow, Finnley will still not be taking a break during the second week of the holiday. He was invited by the Penrith Panthers to spend a week of training at their academy to further enhance his league career. The Academy is a $22 million state-of-the-art facility located behind Panthers Leagues Club in Penrith, and is a fulltime training and development facility for the Panthers’ senior and junior squads.

Parkes Boys Are State Champions!

June 28, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

Parkes not only hosted the NSW State Hockey Championships last weekend, but the U15 Boys team of Parkes Hockey Incorporated won the Division 2 state title!

Parkes 1 defeated Bathurst 2-0 in the final and will move into Division 1 next year. Parkes 2 made it to the semi-final. Parkes 1 coach Glen Johnston said it was an ecstatic feeling to be state champions. “It was a really good result after ten weeks of hard work. The boys deserve this reward as they are eager to listen and learn.” The team scored 22 goals in six games and only had two goals scored against them – “another incredible achievement,” said Glen.

To top off a very successful weekend four players have been named in the 2019 NSW U15 Boys squad. They are Jack Westcott, Jacob Chambers, Hugh Daley and Austin MacGregor. Parkes Hockey has received very positive feedback on the first hosting of a state championship with Hockey NSW thanking them and all the volunteers for the hard work and putting on a “stunner for everyone”.

Parkes Pantherettes Persevere

June 21, 2018 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Pantherettes travelled to Dubbo on a blustery cold day to play the Dubbo Demons last weekend.

Both teams had thirteen players and no subs. The Demons went straight into action scoring a couple of goals. A return from Amy Roseby strengthened the backline as she was able to provide numerous leads and get the ball out of the defensive 50.

After quarter time the Panthers regrouped with a positive attitude. Midfielder Kimberley Dixon snapped up a collection of handballs in tight situations. Defense tightened as Dubbo scored three goals and one behind for the quarter.

Parkes defenders were again under the pump with the ball constantly coming in as the third quarter began. Key players Ashley Rosser and Renee Massurit combined to try and restrict the Dubbo forwards. Parkes kept Dubbo to five goals and two behinds.

As the final quarter started the Panthers tried a few different approaches in the centre, trying to contain the quick Dubbo midfielders and maintain possession of the ball. Hallee Pauley-Lestrange impressed when she had the ball, producing a lot of run and carry in the middle of the ground.

Korine Coleman was awarded players’ player for the match. Unfortunately Dubbo held the Pantherettes scoreless and they managed to add four goals and five behinds to their total. Dubbo 17.13-115 defeated Parkes 0.0-0

Coach Ralph said: “The girls’ skills are really improving, if they keep putting in the effort at training they will only get better.”

This weekend Parkes plays in Orange at Waratahs Oval at 12.45pm.
