Budget Supports Jobs And Business

October 9, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

The Federal Budget tabled on Tuesday night focused on supporting businesses according to Business NSW, the state’s peak business organisation.

The budget will help businesses to hire new staff, and put money back into the pockets of business owners, to turbo charge the economy as it recovers from the ravages of COVID-19. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced an underlying deficit of $213.7 billion, with this expected to improve over the forward estimates to a $66.9 billion deficit.

“This budget will be warmly supported by the business community as we look forward to a more optimistic operating environment in coming months,” said Vicki Seccombe, Regional Manager – Western NSW, Business NSW.

“A suite of job creation and investment measures have been announced. These include investment incentives, an apprentice and trainee subsidy, a wage rebate for employers hiring young people, business tax concessions and ongoing financial support until the unemployment rate reaches six per cent.”

“The focus on job creation and investment is the right one for these times and the government should be commended for listening to the legitimate concerns of the business community when preparing this financial blueprint.”

“The circumstances around this budget are unlike any other since WWII. It’s also easy to forget the huge impact of drought and bushfires which had a jarring impact on our local economy long before the pandemic took hold,” Vicki said.

The Power Of Art and Science

October 9, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

SPARKLING… At the opening of the astrophotography exhibition at the Parkes Radio Telescope were (L-R) President of CWAS Tim Anderson, Dr David Malin, John Sarkissian, Cr Neil Westcott and CEO of Make It Shine Fidah Chowdhury.

An exhibition portraying the powerful mix of art and science opened at the Visitor’s Centre of the CSIRO Parkes Observatory on Wednesday.

The 17th annual Dr David Malin astrophotography competition of the Central West Astronomical Society (CWAS) went ahead in July this year despite the cancellation of the Astrofest due to COVID-19.

The opening of the permanent exhibition of the competition for amateur astronomers and photographers, which has become Australia’s largest photographic exhibition with over 200,000 visitors, was postponed until this week.

“This week is World Space Week, and today is the 75th anniversary of the birth of radio astronomy in Australia, and we thought an appropriate date to open this exhibition,” said organiser of the competition John Sarkissian.

World-renowned astrophotographer, Dr David Malin, who judged the entries in the competition, said on Wednesday the quality of images were better every year. “The mix of art and science also gets better, and this year the focus shifted to technology.” He made special mention of the overall winner Mark Polsen’s entry called Tranquility Base – a landscape image with the moon and Venus peeping through the trees at twilight. “The wonderful colours printed on glass makes it sparkle.”

The winning image was specially printed on glass by Make It Shine in a new partnership with the competition.

The permanent exhibition will be at The Dish for a year, while a second touring exhibition will travel to selected venues, beginning with Sydney Observatory.

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? On and off since 1969. I moved back about seven years ago. I like the friendly people and fairly laid-back atmosphere.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I’m a mechanic at Parkes Toyota. I get enjoyment out of the variety of work and working with good people.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Watching videos and reading books on science fiction.

What makes you proud? Parkes Shire Concert Band achieving awards.

If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? An eagle, because I reckon they’re king of the skies.

What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It is humorous and touches on many idiosyncrasies of the human race.

Tell us about your best holiday. Family holiday to central Australia.

What is on your bucket list? To go to Scotland to catch up with family there.

Memories From Margaret

October 2, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

My husband arrived home one day with a tiny speckled wild pig, its legs taped together with electrical tape. He was released into the house yard and a couple of days later, when Ian tried to catch him, he had other ideas.

All of six inches tall, as Ian closed in on him in the corner of the yard, the pig charged at him, teeth bared and snarling viciously. Ian jumped in the air, all 193cm of him and let the pig go. After he’d been caught, de-loused, put in a small cage and fed for a few days, he was easy to handle. We called him Smedley and he became a family pet.

He thought he was a dog and spent time sitting on the back step, waiting for me to come out so he could follow me to the fowl yard to help the chooks eat their tucker, or down the back yard to the long drop toilet. The day I walked into the laundry to find him, for the second time that day, rolling around in a basket of what had been clean wet nappies, he could consider himself a very lucky pig because all I did was yell at him.

As a full-grown pig he was great company and no risk to anyone, but he presented a problem when we were to leave that place. We couldn’t release him into the wild as he wouldn’t have survived, so we took him to Sydney as hams and bacon, much to the disgust of our children. I didn’t know what else to do, and once he was dead he was just meat, wasn’t he? The hams and bacon surely stood us in good stead through some tough times and no-one complained.

Olympic Memories Part 2: Awesome And Phenomenal Time

October 2, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Dusty Powter holds the stick that Stephen scored the goal with in the Olympic match that won them the bronze medal. Behind him is Stephen’s framed Australian jersey from his testimonial match played in Parkes signed by the Australian and Parkes teams that was sold on auction.

“It was a time when emotions went off the chart,” is Dusty Powter’s recollection of not only attending the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but also the build-up of events in Parkes.

“I will never forget Australian hockey player Stephen Davies leading the procession in the chariot for the Olympic torch relay in Parkes and the carnival at Pioneer Oval. Before that was the filming of the IBM ad, which gave Parkes the best ever advertising all over world. I had family and friends calling from England and Germany who had seen it.”

For Dusty to see his life long friend he had grown up with in Parkes play for Australia in the Olympics was just unreal.

“I had tickets for every hockey game for the men and women and was there for two weeks. Every time Stephen ran on the field, scored a goal or a clip of him was shown on the big screens, tears were running. I was so proud of him, and none of it ever went to his head.”

According to Dusty, an avid hockey player himself and former coach and sponsor of Mariah Williams and sponsor for Kurt Lovett, the Olympics is the pinnacle for hockey. For Stephen to have retired with three Olympic medals (two silver and a bronze from Sydney) is just fantastic.

“It was a big deal for Parkes hockey the day Stephen made it on the national team. He really was the Maradona of hockey. He was just a freak. And the amazing thing is he never forgot where he came from.”

Dusty clearly remembers how friendly and helpful everyone was in Sydney.

“There was such a carnival atmosphere and so many Parkes people with banners in support of Stephen. It was just an awesome and phenomenal time!”

What do you think of the cancellation of the 2021 Parkes Elvis Festival?

October 2, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Doreen Nash (91 years): I am very disappointed, but it is the right thing to do because of COVID. Luckily I have many wonderful memories as I have attended every festival from the very first inaugural dinner that Bob and Anne Steele held at their Gracelands restaurant. In the beginning everyone laughed at such a silly idea to have an Elvis Festival in a town like Parkes and said it would be an embarrassment. The things I loved most about the festivals have been the street parade, the Cooke Park festivities and most of all the Elvis shows at the Parkes Leagues Club and Parkes Services Club. My favourite Elvis has been Mark Andrew Tabone. I also attended the early gospel services in the Big W undercover carpark with my late husband Stewart Nash. These services also grew in popularity and had to be moved to Cooke Park.
