ANZAC Poetry

April 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Marley and Charles were among the winners of the 10th Annual Anzac Writing Competition.

Poppies to Remember

Poppies to remember
The soldiers that fought in war
They battled for our freedom
To save us all

All of the soldiers
Who fought for our land
And the nurses
Who gave them a helping hand

Remember them all
The women and men
That died for our country
So we can now stand

The families who waited
For their loved ones to return home
Some would make it
And others were remembered in a poem

We all have ANZAC
In our heart
By remembering the soldiers
Who did their part.

Coming Home

As you march to the front as brave as could be
I keep wishing you were here with me.
We’re shearing silently in the barn
Still working hard to save the farm.

By the end of the week, we’re selling stock
Not getting much return for the flock.
We feel like we are in a struggle
It’s winter now, so cold, we huddle.

We’re losing money, it’s not much fun
All we afford is half a warm bun.
Everything’s dull and black as the moon
I’m missing you Dad, I’ll see you soon.

I hope you return to the great Central West
And I sure know that you ANZACs are the best.
I know the gunshots must be so loud
I want you to know you’ve made us all proud.

The drought has come and ravaged our home
The red dust covers everything we own.
But from the grain fields you all came
Our own brave ANZACs the very same.

The crops are growing on the fields
But war is dreading the deadly battlefields.
From plenty of families we have met
We all line up ‘Lest we forget’.

Pregnancy And A Pandemic

April 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Sylvie Everingham-Potts

My pregnancy has been an exciting and challenging time. I have encountered many physical and emotional changes some expected and some not.

I have often heard “it changes your life, nothing will ever be the same”. I have never been afraid of a challenge and am interested as to how we will grow as a family.

I have also experienced things which I did not see coming. Firstly, the limitations on our local maternity ward, meaning I opted to see a specialist in Orange.

And then something I never expected to deal with – COVID-19. It feels like I’ve lost control of aspects of my life, as all of us had.

Although there are horrific factors associated with the pandemic, it has also given us a window of time to review many aspects of our lives which many will never get the opportunity to do till retirement.

We have realised what is truly important, begun supporting each other and become more grateful for the simple things.

I am a firm believer in perspective. I am only allowed one support person during giving birth when I always thought my mum would be there with my husband plus others.

I thought my maternity leave would be full of celebrating with my friends my journey into motherhood, instead I have been confronted with a cancelled baby shower and isolation. I have watched as so many around me have had their lives change horrendously and mourned not only my losses but the ones of my friends and family.

Throughout it all though I have made it my personal mission to make sure I am grateful every day for the things I do have, my health, my community, my family, my home, support services in our country, technology which helps us to stay connected and of course my baby!

Nothing Sauer About Kyal’s Truckin’ Gig

April 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Kyal Sauer is very excited to be combining his passion with work landing a job at Wallace Bulk Haulage in Forbes

April is Autism Awareness month and for one Currajong Disability Services client it is indeed a time for celebration.

For as long as he can remember, Kyal Sauer always wanted to work with trucks.

It is not just a hobby, trucks are Kyal’s passion and he managed to achieve his goal off his own plate, a major achievement for someone living with autism.

Kyal just landed his dream job at Wallace’s in Forbes and he couldn’t be happier! “I have always wanted to get into the truck industry and be around heavy machinery,” said Kyal.

“I love everything about trucks. I am so happy I got this job so I can learn more,” Kyal said.

For Kyal, who also lives in Forbes, it is an added bonus to be working so close to home.

“It’s a short drive to work at Wallace Bulk Haulage, which is good. Everyone there is great and very supportive,” he said.

Kyal goes to work twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays, and he is in part responsible for the upkeep and cleaning of the trucks.

“I get to make sure the trucks are roadworthy and in good nick,” Kyal said.

“It’s an important job and someone has to do it.

“I’d do it all day every day if I could!”

Parkes Shire Concert Band

April 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

The Parkes Shire Concert Band will really miss playing at the Anzac Day ceremonies tomorrow, so we are featuring some members

Annette and Lila Gascoigne: Lila plays trumpet and is also in the Parkes Public School band. Annette plays piano for her church, and wanted to learn to play saxophone. She joined before Christmas last year, and loved playing in the Elvis parade!

Duncan Clement: Duncan is the band’s music director and usually plays the Reveille at the Dawn Service, and conducts the band at the service.

Ileerose Haydon: Year 9 student Ileerose has been a band member since she was in Year 3. She loves the band’s playouts, especially ABBA.

Commemorate Anzac Day At Home

April 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

SOLO… Amelia Leach of the Parkes Shire Concert Band, will be playing the Last Post on her trumpet from her mailbox at 6am tomorrow.

Although there will be no dawn services, street parades and public ceremonies tomorrow to commemorate Anzac Day, we can all do something special to ensure we will always remember it.

“Australians are known for their qualities of mateship, humour, ingenuity, courage and endurance – and during this time of uncertainty, it’s particularly important that we demonstrate these qualities and harness the ‘Anzac Spirit’,” said Parkes Shire Mayor, Cr Ken Keith OAM.

“By paying our respects from home we can ensure we keep the Anzac legacy alive, and also keep our friends, family and community safe by helping to stop the spread of COVID-19.”

The Parkes Shire Council has compiled a list of suggestions for how locals can acknowledge Anzac Day and ensure Australian servicemen and women are appropriately remembered.

• Stand at the end of your driveway at 6am and/or 10am on Saturday, 25th April and observe a minute’s silence, or you can play The Last Post on an instrument. Amelia Leach, member of the Parkes Shire Concert Band, will be playing her trumpet from her mailbox at 6am, as will several other members of the band.

• St George’s Anglican Church in Parkes will play the Last Post and Reveille over the external speaker system at 6am. At 7:30am there will be an online Service of Remembrance that has been pre-recorded and may be accessed through https://parkesanglican.online.church. There will be a link to the recording made available later during the day on Facebook or searched through YouTube.

• At 2pm Geoff Steventon will host a biblical talk on ‘Christians in the Military – What does the Bible Say’. Geoff is the Pastor of Koinonia Community Church in Peak Hill. He served in the Army Reserve for 34 years, joining as a Private and retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

• Tune into the ABC’s live broadcast of the national Dawn Service at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra from 5.30am. There will also be a 10am service from the Anzac Memorial in Sydney on ABC and streamed live.

• Record yourself reciting the ode or share a message of support for veterans on social media using the hashtag #ANZACSpirit.

• Reach out to a mate. Many people are alone during this time of isolation. It’s an opportunity to invoke the ANZAC value of mateship.

• Make a paper poppy wreath for your door or fence to show your support.

• Bake a batch of Anzac biscuits!

• Donate to the ANZAC appeal online, www.anzacappeal.com.au. to help provide specialist services to thousands of veterans and their families.

Geoff Stokes is the Anzac Day piper, and has played Flowers of the Forest, a lament for Anzac Day, at the Dawn Service and morning ceremony for many years. He also played first violin in the local orchestra.

Letter from the Publisher

April 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Dear readers,

I would like to write to you personally and on behalf of the entire Phoenix Group of Newspapers to thank you for your continued support of our publications over the last few weeks during the Coronavirus crisis.

This is a stressful period for many, and will no doubt continue to be over the next few weeks, at least. While we have done it tough here at the Phoenix, there are many other local businesses doing it much tougher, and I would like to let them all know that our thoughts and best wishes are with them. We will continue to support our local community as best as we can by providing all the up to date local news, as well as continuing to offer our publishing space to all our advertisers, past, present, and future.

With that said, I would like to take this opportunity to confirm to our readers and advertisers that we will continue to publish our weekly newspaper as we normally would. I understand that there is currently much uncertainty around community media, but we are here to stay. We have plans in place to ensure our future viability, and while our staff are all working remotely from home at the moment, they are all still contactable by phone, email and social media, and are still responding to all enquiries that come their way.

While there are challenges, we will still be the local voice of our community, as we have been over the last few years. Our newspapers will continue to be free of charge, and while there are some outlets that we cannot distribute from at the moment, our newspapers will still be available from all others, and we will still be distributing our rural copies through Australia Post.

Please let it be known that we are with everyone through this tough time and will always be available to support our community wherever we can.

Kind regards,
Joshua Matic,
Publisher

Our Gal – Beverley Drabsch

April 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I was born and raised in Parkes, then moved overseas where I lived most of my life. I returned to Parkes two years ago. I like Parkes. It’s a pretty town, and the people are friendly. I love the community spirit of this town.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I work at Neighbourhood Central. The team here is great. I see a lot of dedication and care, both with staff and our team of volunteers.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? I enjoy reading and walking, and enjoying nature.

What makes you proud? I am proud of my children.

If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? I like elephants for their size and gentleness. I like horses for their beauty and strength. Sheep are so cute; it’s funny how they’ll stand and stare at you for so long. I wonder why. But to answer the question, I really am happy that I’m a human being.

What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? My favourite book is by an Italian mystic, Maria Valtorta. It is very compelling reading. I’ve read it several times. And then, of course, I just love Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. I first read the trilogy in my teens and couldn’t put it down. I’ve since read it several times and watched the films three times.

Tell us about your best holiday. Holidaying with family. Family is special.

What is on your bucket list? I’m not very musical, but wish I were. Wishing to have some musical talent is “ideally” a bucket list item destined to remain on the list.

Farmer Ana Feeds Frontline Fighters

April 24, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Farmer Ana with her trays filled with delicious slices.

After the successful Farmer Ana cake drive to help drought stricken farmers, Ana has turned her sights on frontline workers combatting the Coronavirus.

“I care for the community and these people face trauma and tragedy every day. The slices are a way of saying thank you,” said Ana.

“I will be baking trays of delicious slices for the frontline workers that can accept them.” Ana has already delivered trays to the Parkes and Forbes hospitals, and plans to make contact with other workers such as paramedics, police, fire service and other community workers soon.

To keep the project going, Ana welcomes donations of flour and cooking additives to help her continue baking. Contact Ana on 0423 150 949.

‘Reel’ Creativity By Currajong Sewing Group

April 17, 2020 By Maggi Barnard

Donna Apps with some of the designs.

The Currajong Disability Services Sewing Group continues to come up with creative and innovative ways of staying afloat and keeping up with the times.

With the rain of recent times, the group added umbrella bags to their range of items, and following on from a world-wide trend during the Corona crisis they’ve started making teddy bears too.

“We’ve gone from drought to rain and with rain comes umbrellas and umbrella bags,” said Deitre Jackson of Currajong Disability Services Sewing Group. “When enough have been made we will make a decision on what will be done with them,” said Deitre.

She said the teddies would be popular too. “Whenever we have branched into that area before it has always been well received.”

In one of the more positive outcomes of the Corona pandemic – people from all around the world are coming together in fun and creative ways. Parkes residents have joined the bear hunt by putting teddy bears and other stuffed animals in their windows for families to take their kids on a bear hunt.
